Abstract:The past decade has witnessed two important new developments in the study of linear series on algebraic varieties. First, vector bundles have emerged as powerful tools for analyzing linear series on curves and surfaces. More recently, the viewpoints and techniques of higher dimensional geometry have started to play a central role. The purpose of these lectures is to provide a down-to-earth introduction to some of these new ideas and methods. The present notes, written with the assistance of G. Fernandez del Busto, are a considerably expanded version of a course given at the 1993 Regional Geometry Institute on Higher Dimensional Complex Geometry at Park City, Utah. While I hope they may be of interest to any geometers wishing to learn about recent work on linear series, I have particularly attempted to aim the discusion at a novice audience. My hope is that with a little faith and effort, these notes should be accessible to anyone having finished the standard introductory texts in algebraic geometry. The underlying theme of the lectures is the search for higher dimensional generalizations of the most basic facts about linear series on curves. But in an attempt to keep things elementary we work more or less exclusively on surfaces. Thus we end up discussing one central result -- viz. Reider's theorem -- from many points of view. Sticking to the case of surfaces allows one to eliminate many technical complexities, and I hope that parts of these lectures might therefore serve as a useful first introduction to the powerful cohomological techniques (involving $Q$-divisors) of contemporary

Abstract:These notes (prepared for the author's lectures at the Cracow Summer School on Linear Systems organized by S. Mueller-Stach and T. Szemberg, held March 23-27, 2009 at the Pedagogical University of Cracow under the sponsorship of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) present a number of open problems on the theory of smooth projective algebraic surfaces, and put into historical context recent work on a range of topics, including Mori dream spaces and the finite generation of the Cox ring, Seshadri constants, and the resurgence of homogeneous ideals and the problem of which ordinary powers of homogeneous ideals contain given symbolic powers of those ideals. Abstract:These are notes of a graduate course on semisimple Lie algebras and Chevalley groups (over arbitrary fields). Standard references for these topics are the lectures notes by Steinberg (1967) and the book by Carter (1972). The aim of this text is to give a self-contained introduction based on Lusztig's recent simplified approach, which is inspired by the general theory of ``canonical'' bases. Many constructions are of a purely combinatorial nature and, hence, can be implemented on a computer. We explicitly incorporate such algorithmic methods in our treatment. This is the first part of a planned book project.

Abstract:These lecture notes formed the basis of a mini-course on algebraic quantum field theory presented at the Bootstrap 2024 conference in Madrid. The goal of the notes is to explain the merits of algebraic quantum field theory to a broad audience, and to explore (i) how to know when a particular question calls for an algebraic answer, (ii) how to apply the tools of algebraic QFT to such a problem, and (iii) why quantum field theorists of all stripes stand to benefit from a basic knowledge of algebraic quantum fields. The first lecture focuses on the big-picture motivation behind the algebraic approach to quantum field theory, and an elaboration of its basic tools. Subsequent lectures explain some of the modern achievements of the algebraic toolkit, including an argument for the averaged null energy condition and an enhanced understanding of entropy for semiclassical black holes.

Abstract:These are expanded and revised notes for a minicourse entitled "Affine W-algebras", which took place as part of the thematic month "Quantum Symmetries" at the Centre de Recherches Mathematiques in Montreal, Canada in October 2022. The first few sections consist of rapid introductions to vertex algebras, affine Kac-Moody algebras and their integrable and admissible modules, and the homological BRST procedure for quantum Hamiltonian reduction. The affine W-algebras are defined using these ingredients. The remainder of the notes treats the structure and representation theory of the exceptional affine W-algebras, with emphasis on modular tensor categories of representations.

Abstract:The following is an exposition of a course of algebra that Prof. Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Zykov (1922-2013) distributed among the participants of his seminar in graph theory not far away from Odessa, Ukraine, on September, 1991. It is a privilege for me to be able to reproduce, with some good additions, the English version of this remarkable course that he designed carefully over several years with the help of other colleagues and with the only purpose of making the science of algebra more accessible to the less gifted student. Prof. Zykov was an admirable person and a very clever mathematician and scientist. His scientific interests were wide: from the mathematical sciences at any level and in any of their branches to the theory of relativity as I recall. He kindly wrote a review recommending the results of my doctoral dissertation, which was necessary for the approval to obtain a Ph.D. degree during the meeting of my defense. In that meeting, I was very nervous because I had in front of me fifteen professors all of them doctors of technical or mathematical sciences asking all sort of questions and whom I had to convince of the fact that my results were true. I am sure this algebra course played the role that Prof. Zykov, with his deepness of thought, had primarily intended, that is, one course designed with the right approach to help out many of his students.

Abstract:These lecture notes are based on the second course in a series of lectures at the Spring school "Non-archimedean geometry and Eigenvarieties" in March 2023 in Heidelberg. The objective of the first three courses was to give an introduction to the theory of adic spaces. Building up on the theory of Huber pairs presented in John Bergdall's lecture we explain the construction of adic spaces. We study some important classes of adic spaces such as rigid analytic spaces and formal schemes and show the connections between them. In the course of the lecture we will illustrate the respective concepts with the fundamental examples of the open and closed disc and the affine line.

Abstract:These are the notes from a course of five lectures at the 2009 Park City Math Institute. The focus is on elliptic curves over function fields over finite fields. In the first three lectures, we explain the main classical results (mainly due to Tate) on the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture in this context and its connection to the Tate conjecture about divisors on surfaces. This is preceded by a "Lecture 0" on background material. In the remaining two lectures, we discuss more recent developments on elliptic curves of large rank and constructions of explicit points in high rank situations.
