Abstract:These are notes of a graduate course on semisimple Lie algebras and Chevalley groups (over arbitrary fields). Standard references for these topics are the lectures notes by Steinberg (1967) and the book by Carter (1972). The aim of this text is to give a self-contained introduction based on Lusztig's recent simplified approach, which is inspired by the general theory of ``canonical'' bases. Many constructions are of a purely combinatorial nature and, hence, can be implemented on a computer. We explicitly incorporate such algorithmic methods in our treatment. This is the first part of a planned book project.

Abstract:These are the lecture notes that accompanied the course of the same name that I taught at the Eindhoven University of Technology from 2021 to 2023. The course is intended as an introduction to neural networks for mathematics students at the graduate level and aims to make mathematics students interested in further researching neural networks. It consists of two parts: first a general introduction to deep learning that focuses on introducing the field in a formal mathematical way. The second part provides an introduction to the theory of Lie groups and homogeneous spaces and how it can be applied to design neural networks with desirable geometric equivariances. The lecture notes were made to be as self-contained as possible so as to accessible for any student with a moderate mathematics background. The course also included coding tutorials and assignments in the form of a set of Jupyter notebooks that are publicly available at https://gitlab.com/bsmetsjr/mathematics_of_neural_networks.

Abstract:Lie algebras are an important class of algebras which arise throughout mathematics and physics. We report on the formalisation of Lie algebras in Lean's Mathlib library. Although basic knowledge of Lie theory will benefit the reader, none is assumed; the intention is that the overall themes will be accessible even to readers unfamiliar with Lie theory. Particular attention is paid to the construction of the classical and exceptional Lie algebras. Thanks to these constructions, it is possible to state the classification theorem for finite-dimensional semisimple Lie algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. In addition to the focus on Lie theory, we also aim to highlight the unity of Mathlib. To this end, we include examples of achievements made possible only by leaning on several branches of the library simultaneously.

In these notes, we develop the basic theory of vertex operator algebras (VOAs) and their conformal blocks using complex-analytic methods.
