Abstract:This review begins with the standard Lie symmetry theory for nonlinear PDEs and explores extensions of symmetry analysis. First, it introduces three key symmetry reduction methods: the classical symmetry method, conditional symmetries, and the CK direct method. Next, it presents two finite symmetry transformation group methods—one related to Lax pairs and one independent of them. The fourth section reviews four nonlocal symmetry methods based on conserved forms, conformal invariants, Darboux transformations, and Lax pairs. The final section covers supersymmetry theory and supersymmetric dark equations. Each method is illustrated with examples and references.

Abstract:We present an extension of the methods of classical Lie group analysis of differential equations to equations involving generalized functions (in particular: distributions). A suitable framework for such a generalization is provided by Colombeau's theory of algebras of generalized functions. We show that under some mild conditions on the differential equations, symmetries of classical solutions remain symmetries for generalized solutions. Moreover, we introduce a generalization of the infinitesimal methods of group analysis that allows to compute symmetries of linear and nonlinear differential equations containing generalized function terms. Thereby, the group generators and group actions may be given by generalized functions themselves.

Abstract:We briefly review two different methods of applying Lie group theory in the numerical solution of ordinary differential equations. On specific examples we show how the symmetry preserving discretization provides difference schemes for which the “first differential approximation” is invariant under the same Lie group as the original ordinary differential equation.

Abstract:Lie symmetry analysis is one of the powerful tools to analyze nonlinear ordinary differential equations. We review the effectiveness of this method in terms of various symmetries. We present the method of deriving Lie point symmetries, contact symmetries, hidden symmetries, nonlocal symmetries, $\lambda$-symmetries, adjoint symmetries and telescopic vector fields of a second-order ordinary differential equation. We also illustrate the algorithm involved in each method by considering a nonlinear oscillator equation as an example. The connections between (i) symmetries and integrating factors and (ii) symmetries and integrals are also discussed and illustrated through the same example. The interconnections between some of the above symmetries, that is (i) Lie point symmetries and $\lambda$-symmetries and (ii) exponential nonlocal symmetries and $\lambda$-symmetries are also discussed. The order reduction procedure is invoked to derive the general solution of the second-order equation.

Abstract:Within the framework of inverse Lie problem, we give some non-trivial examples of coupled Lie remarkable equations, \textit{i.e.}, classes of differential equations that are in correspondence with their Lie point symmetries. In particular, we determine hierarchies of second order partial differential equations uniquely characterized by affine transformations of $\mathbb{R}^{n+m}$, and a system of two third order partial differential equations in two independent variables uniquely determined by the Lie algebra of projective transformations of $\mathbb{R}^4$.

Abstract:Symmetry is a powerful tool for finding analytical solutions to differential equations, both partial and ordinary, via the similarity variables or via the invariance of the equation under group transformations. It is the largest group of transformations that leaves the differential equation invariant. It is now known that this differential equation method plays the same role when it comes to the study of difference equations. Difference equations can be used to model various phenomena where the changes occur in discrete manner. The use of symmetries on recurrence equations, usually, leads to reductions of order and hence ease the process of finding their solutions. One of the aims of this work is to employ symmetries to generalize some results in the literature. We present new generalized formula solutions of a class of difference equations and we investigate the periodicity and behavior of theses solutions.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a fourth‐order nonlinear diffusion partial differential equation, depending on two arbitrary functions. First, we perform an analysis of the symmetry reductions for this parabolic partial differential equation by applying the Lie symmetry method. The invariance property of a partial differential equation under a Lie group of transformations yields the infinitesimal generators. By using this invariance condition, we present a complete classification of the Lie point symmetries for the different forms of the functions that the partial differential equation involves. Afterwards, the optimal systems of one‐dimensional subalgebras for each maximal Lie algebra are determined, by computing previously the commutation relations, with the Lie bracket operator, and the adjoint representation. Next, the reductions to ordinary differential equations are derived from the optimal systems of one‐dimensional subalgebras. Furthermore, we study travelling wave reductions depending on the form of the two arbitrary functions of the original equation. Some travelling wave solutions are obtained, such as solitons, kinks and periodic waves.

Abstract:Here we present a new approach to compute symmetries of rational second order ordinary differential equations (rational 2ODEs). This method can compute Lie symmetries (point symmetries, dynamical symmetries and non-local symmetries) algorithmically. The procedure is based on an idea arising from the formal equivalence between the total derivative operator and the vector field associated with the 2ODE over its solutions (Cartan vector field). Basically, from the formal representation of a Lie symmetry it is possible to extract information that allows to use this symmetry practically (in the 2ODE integration process) even in cases where the formal operation cannot be performed, i.e., in cases where the symmetry is nonlocal. Furthermore, when the 2ODE in question depends on parameters, the procedure allows an analysis that determines the regions of the parameter space in which the integrable cases are located.

The authors obtain group-invariant solutions of the non-linear equation i psi t+ Delta psi =a0 psi +a1 psi mod psi mod 2+a2 psi mod psi mod 4 for which the symmetry group was previously shown to be the extended Galilei group for a1a2 not=0 and the extended Galilei-similitude group for a1=0 or a2=0. They use the symmetry subgroups to reduce the equation to ordinary differential equations which are solved, whenever possible, with the help of a singularity analysis. Solutions are obtained in terms of elementary functions, Jacobi elliptic functions and Painleve transcendents.

Abstract:Lie symmetries for ordinary differential equations are studied. In systems of ordinary differential equations, there do not always exist non-trivial Lie symmetries around equilibrium points. We present a necessary condition for existence of Lie symmetries analytic in the neighbourhood of an equilibrium point. In addition, this result can be applied to a necessary condition for existence of a Lie symmetry in quasihomogeneous systems of ordinary differential equations. With the help of our main theorem, it is proved that several systems do not possess any analytic Lie symmetries.

Abstract:In this paper, the relationships between Lie symmetry groups and fundamental solutions for a class of conformable time fractional partial differential equations (PDEs) with variable coefficients are investigated. Specifically, the group-invariant solutions to the considered equations are constructed applying symmetry group method and the corresponding fundamental solutions for these systems are established with the help of the above obtained group-invariant solutions and inverting Laplace transformation. In addition, the connections between fundamental solutions for two conformable time fractional systems are given by equivalence transformation. Furthermore, the conservation laws of these fractional systems are provided using new Noether theorem and obtained Lie algebras.

Abstract:We consider higher symmetries and operator symmetries of linear partial differential equations. The higher symmetries form a Lie algebra, and operator ones form an associative algebra. The relationship between these symmetries is established. We show that symmetries of linear equations sometimes generate symmetries of nonlinear ones. New symmetries of two-dimensional stationary equations of gas dynamics are found.

Abstract:This paper addresses a new approach to find a spectrum of information measures for the process of digital circuit synthesis. We consider the problem from the information engine point of view. The circuit synthesis as a whole and different steps of the design process (an example of decision diagram is given) are presented via such measurements as entropy, logical work and information vitality. We also introduce new information measures to provide better estimates of synthesis criteria. We show that the basic properties of information engine, such as the conservation law of information flow and the equilibrium law of information can be formulated.

Abstract:We revisit the results on admissible transformations between normal linear systems of second-order ordinary differential equations with an arbitrary number of dependent variables under several appropriate gauges of the arbitrary elements parameterizing these systems. For each class from the constructed chain of nested gauged classes of such systems, we single out its singular subclass, which appears to consist of systems being similar to the elementary (free particle) system whereas the regular subclass is the complement of the singular one. This allows us to exhaustively describe the equivalence groupoids of the above classes as well as of their singular and regular subclasses. Applying various algebraic techniques, we establish principal properties of Lie symmetries of the systems under consideration and outline ways for completely classifying these symmetries. In particular, we compute the sharp lower and upper bounds for the dimensions of the maximal Lie invariance algebras possessed by systems from each of the above classes and subclasses. We also show how equivalence transformations and Lie symmetries can be used for reduction of order of such systems and their integration. As an illustrative example of using the theory developed, we solve the complete group classification problems for all these classes in the case of two dependent variables.

Group Invariant Solutions Without Transversality

Abstract:We present a generalization of Lie's method for finding the group invariant solutions to a system of partial differential equations. Our generalization relaxes the standard transversality assumption and encompasses the common situation where the reduced differential equations for the group invariant solutions involve both fewer dependent and independent variables. The theoretical basis for our method is provided by a general existence theorem for the invariant sections, both local and global, of a bundle on which a finite dimensional Lie group acts. A simple and natural extension of our characterization of invariant sections leads to an intrinsic characterization of the reduced equations for the group invariant solutions for a system of differential equations. The characterization of both the invariant sections and the reduced equations are summarized schematically by the kinematic and dynamic reduction diagrams and are illustrated by a number of examples from fluid mechanics, harmonic maps, and general relativity. This work also provides the theoretical foundations for a further detailed study of the reduced equations for group invariant solutions.
