Abstract:These lecture notes are intended to give a modest impulse to anyone willing to start or pursue a journey into the theory of Vertex Algebras by reading one of Kac's or Lepowsky-Li's books. Therefore, the primary goal is to provide required tools and help being acquainted with the machinery which the whole theory is based on. The exposition follows Kac's approach. Fundamental examples relevant in Theoretical Physics are also discussed. No particular prerequisites are assumed.

Abstract:These are expanded and revised notes for a minicourse entitled "Affine W-algebras", which took place as part of the thematic month "Quantum Symmetries" at the Centre de Recherches Mathematiques in Montreal, Canada in October 2022. The first few sections consist of rapid introductions to vertex algebras, affine Kac-Moody algebras and their integrable and admissible modules, and the homological BRST procedure for quantum Hamiltonian reduction. The affine W-algebras are defined using these ingredients. The remainder of the notes treats the structure and representation theory of the exceptional affine W-algebras, with emphasis on modular tensor categories of representations.

Abstract:These are the lecture notes for a course taught at Tsinghua University in the spring of 2022. In these notes, we develop the basic theory of vertex operator algebras (VOAs) and their conformal blocks using complex-analytic methods. In particular, many well-known subtleties in VOA theory (about formal variables and, e.g., delta-functions) are presented in the form of proving the absolute and locally uniform (a.l.u.) convergence of certain series of complex analytic functions. We also provide many motivations from the perspective of Segal CFT.

Abstract:Communications in Contemporary Mathematics, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we study nullity-[math] toroidal extended affine Lie algebras in the context of vertex algebras and their [math]-coordinated modules. Among the main results, we introduce a variant of toroidal extended affine Lie algebras, associate vertex algebras to the variant Lie algebras, and establish a canonical connection between modules for toroidal extended affine Lie algebras and [math]-coordinated modules for these vertex algebras. Furthermore, by employing some results of Billig, we obtain an explicit realization of a class of irreducible modules for the variant Lie algebras.

Abstract:These lecture notes are based on the second course in a series of lectures at the Spring school "Non-archimedean geometry and Eigenvarieties" in March 2023 in Heidelberg. The objective of the first three courses was to give an introduction to the theory of adic spaces. Building up on the theory of Huber pairs presented in John Bergdall's lecture we explain the construction of adic spaces. We study some important classes of adic spaces such as rigid analytic spaces and formal schemes and show the connections between them. In the course of the lecture we will illustrate the respective concepts with the fundamental examples of the open and closed disc and the affine line.

Abstract:These are notes of a graduate course on semisimple Lie algebras and Chevalley groups (over arbitrary fields). Standard references for these topics are the lectures notes by Steinberg (1967) and the book by Carter (1972). The aim of this text is to give a self-contained introduction based on Lusztig's recent simplified approach, which is inspired by the general theory of ``canonical'' bases. Many constructions are of a purely combinatorial nature and, hence, can be implemented on a computer. We explicitly incorporate such algorithmic methods in our treatment. This is the first part of a planned book project.

The title of the course is "Curve algebriche piane e sghembe" ("Plane and space algebraic curves"): indeed, the language of both the original text and our brief introduction is Italian. The manuscript belongs to the legacy of Alfredo Franchetta (1916-2011) and the typesetting is due to Natascia Zangani. This edition is our modest contribution to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Guido Castelnuovo (1865-1952).
