Abstract:Lithium-ion-conducting solid electrolytes show promise for enabling high-energy secondary battery chemistries and solving safety issues associated with conventional lithium batteries. Achieving the combination of high ionic conductivity and outstanding chemical stability in solid electrolytes is a grand challenge for the synthesis of solid electrolytes. Herein we report the design of aliovalent substitution of Li4SnS4 to achieve high conduction and excellent air stability based on the hard and soft acids and bases theory. The solid electrolyte of composition Li3.833Sn0.833As0.166S4 has a high ionic conductivity of 1.39 mS cm(-1) at 25 degrees C. Considering the high Li+ transference number, this phase conducts Li+ as well as carbonate-based liquid electrolytes. This research also addresses the compatibility of the sulfide-based solid electrolytes through chemical passivation.

Abstract:All-solid-state batteries employing sulfide solid electrolyte and Li metal anode are promising because of their high safety and energy densities. However, the interface between Li metal and sulfides suffers from catastrophic instability which stems the practical use. Here, a dynamically stable sulfide electrolyte architecture to construct the hierarchy of interface stability is reported. By rationally designing the multilayer structures of sulfide electrolytes, the dynamic decomposing-alloying process from MS4 (M = Ge or Sn) unit in sulfide interlayer can significantly prohibit Li dendrite penetration is revealed. The abundance of highly electronic insulating decompositions, such as Li2S, at the sulfide interlayer interface helps to well constrain the dynamic decomposition process and preserve the long-term polarization stability is also highlighted. By using Li6PS5Cl||Li10SnP2S12||Li6PS5Cl electrolyte architecture, Li metal anode shows an unprecedented critical current density over 3 mA cm-2 and achieves the steady over-potential for approximate to 900 hours. Based upon the merits, the Li||LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 battery delivers a remarkable 75.3% retention even after 600 cycles at 1 C (1C-0.95 mA cm-2) under a low stack pressure of 15 MPa. A universal dynamically stable multilayer sulfide electrolyte to inhibit dendrite and stabilize polarization is reported. It is revealed that the dynamic decomposing-alloying process by the HVMEC-SSE interlayer prohibits dendrite penetration. Li anode shows an unprecedented critical current density over 3 mA cm-2 and holds the steady over-potential for approximate to 900 h. Abstract:Sulfide solid electrolytes are excessively investigated on account of the high ionic conductivity. The co-doping strategy provides a promising approach to achieve excellent chemical and electrochemical stability for the large-scale application of sulfide-based solid state electrolytes.

Abstract:Sulfide solid electrolytes have recently attracted significant interest for use in all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) due to their high ionic conductivity. However, one of the main challenges associated with the commercialization of sulfide-based electrolytes is their instability toward air/moisture, which leads to complex processing requirements. Herein, we develop a strategy to not only increase ionic conductivity but also obtain high air stability of the Li10Ge(P1-xSbx)(2)S-12 electrolyte system with soft acid Sb substitution. Theoretical calculations predict the Sb substitution in (Ge,P)S-4 tetrahedral sites, which is further confirmed by the X-ray diffraction Rietveld refinement and synchrotron X-ray absorption fine structure analysis. Opened channels and increased unit cell volume are achieved with an appropriate amount of Sb substitution, leading to an ultrahigh ionic conductivity of 17.3 +/- 0.9 mS cm(-1). The softer acidity of Sb compared to that of P also ensures strong covalent bonding with S in Li10Ge(P1-xSbx)(2)S-12, which improves the air stability of the electrolyte. Moreover, the air-exposed samples exhibit high ionic conductivities of 12.1-15.7 mS cm(-1). Bulk-type ASSLBs assembled with either pristine or air-exposed Li10Ge(P1-xSbx)(2)S-12 exhibit high initial Coulombic efficiencies of 92.8 and 91.0%, respectively, with excellent cycling performances of over 110 cycles. The observed variations in the structural parameters and bond strengths provide an effective approach toward designing more ionically conductive and stable solid-state electrolytes.

Abstract:Li10GeP2S12 shows great potential as solid electrolytes for solid-state batteries due to its ultrahigh Li-ion conductivity. However, the high cost of Ge and the poor stability limit its applications. Replacing Ge with Sn can significantly lower the cost and maintains the high conductivity, while the corresponding Li10SnP2S12 still suffers the low interfacial stability with the bare high voltage layered oxide cathodes. Herein, Li10SnP2S12 with high Li-ion conductivity up to 4.79 mS cm−1 has been synthesized. All-solid-state battery using the cathode consisting of bare LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 and Li10SnP2S12 shows low capacities and poor cyclability due to side reactions between those two particles. To improve the interfacial stability, a highly conductive Li3InCl6 electrolyte is introduced both in the cathode mixture and between the cathode layer and Li10SnP2S12 solid electrolyte layer. This new configuration delivers superior electrochemical performances at different operating temperatures. It delivers high initial discharge capacities of 176.1 mAh g−1, 186.9 mAh g−1, and 73.7 mAh g−1 at 0.1C when operated at room temperature, 60 oC, and −20 oC, respectively. The superior battery performances are attributed to the excellent electrochemical stability of Li3InCl6 electrolyte towards bare LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 cathode. This work provides a guideline to design Li10SnP2S12-based all-solid-state lithium batteries with high energy density and long span life.

Abstract:Li metal is a promising anode material for all‐solid‐state batteries, owing to its high specific capacity and low electrochemical potential. However, direct contact of Li metal with most solid‐state electrolytes induces severe side reactions that can lead to dendrite formation and short circuits. Moreover, Li metal is unstable when exposed to air, leading to stringent processing requirements. Herein, it is reported that the Li3PS4/Li interface in all‐solid‐state batteries can be stabilized by an air‐stable LixSiSy protection layer that is formed in situ on the surface of Li metal through a solution‐based method. Highly stable Li cycling for over 2000 h in symmetrical cells and a lifetime of over 100 cycles can be achieved for an all‐solid‐state LiCoO2/Li3PS4/Li cell. Synchrotron‐based high energy X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy in‐depth analysis demonstrates the distribution of different components within the protection layer. The in situ formation of an electronically insulating LixSiSy protection layer with highly ionic conductivity provides an effective way to prevent Li dendrite formation in high‐energy all‐solid‐state Li metal batteries.

Abstract:The ideal solid-state electrolyte must have exceptional chemical and electrochemical stability, high ionic conductivity, lower interfacial resistance and high active material utilization. Inspired by discovering new lithium thiophosphate superionic conductors for all-solid-state Li/S batteries (ASSLSBs), we designed and explored the local structure of Li6.95Zr0.05P2.9S10.8O0.1I0.4 (LZPSOI) solid-state electrolyte, which owns a high ionic conductivity of 3.01 mS cm−1 with improved air-stability at RT. The structure–property correlation behavior of the chemical stability of LZPSOI electrolyte was sequentially premeditated by a combination of ex-situ XRD, MAS-NMR, XPS and SEM. A mechanistically driven approach has been extensively evaluated that the chemical stability of Li7P3S11 could be enhanced via oxide doping, in which S2- was partly replaced by O2– in conductive structural units to yield POS3 3- and P2OS6 4- which was confirmed by XPS and 31P MAS-NMR. The ASSLSBs assembled with LZPSOI electrolyte exhibited a remarkable initial discharge capacity of 932 mAh g−1 and a coulombic efficiency of 99.2% under 0.064 mA cm−2 at RT, compared to Li7P3S11 counterpart. The exceptional cyclic performance was benefitted from higher electronic and ionic conductivities with LiI additive and additional reaction sites, which collectively enhanced the utilization of Li2S active material. This exploration gives birth to a potential contender as a solid-state electrolyte with high ionic conductivity and chemical stability to apply for next-generation ASSLSBs.

Abstract:Herein, the Li3.12P0.94Bi0.06S3.91O0.09 is synthesized successfully via Bi, O co‐doping the Li3PS4 for the first time. Compared with the pristine Li3PS4 electrolyte, the co‐substitution Li3.12P0.94Bi0.06S3.91O0.09 electrolyte presents higher Li+ ions concentration, excellent structural stability, admirable air stability, and ultrahigh critical current density. All‐solid‐state batteries are one of the most promising lithium–ion batteries as they are safe with high energy density and applicable to different occasions. Sulfide solid electrolytes (SSEs) are welcoming due to their good ionic conductivity and processability. However, as the SSE conductor is unstable when exposed to air, its development and application are limited. A series of new Li3+2xP1−xBixS4−1.5xO1.5x (X = 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08) solid electrolytes are synthesized by co‐doping Li3PS4 with Bi and O, and the new electrolytes have better ionic conductivity and air‐stability than Li3PS4. The lithium ionic conductivity of Li3.12P0.94Bi0.06S3.91O0.09 solid electrolytes reached up to 2.8 mS cm–1 at room temperature, the highest and 9 times as high as that of Li3PS4. The doped solid electrolytes are compatible with lithium anode, and the cycling performance is improved. Importantly, the critical current density of Li3.12P0.94Bi0.06S3.91O0.09 electrolytes can reach to 1.2 mA cm–2. In particular, the Li|Li3.12P0.94Bi0.06S3.91O0.09|Li symmetric cells are stable even after 400 h running at 1 mA cm–2 and 25 °C. Bi2O3 doping SSEs are expected to be the next generation of all‐solid‐state lithium batteries due to their good ionic conductivity and air‐stability.

Abstract:Sulfide solid electrolytes have emerged as highly promising candidates for an all-solid-state battery, while phosphorus-free compounds with air stability have not gotten enough attention. In this study, we focus on an air-stable compound, Li4SnS4, whose structure can be adjusted by Bi3+ doping through the combination of a two-step ball milling method and thermal annealing. The successful substitution of Sn4+ by Bi3+ with lower valence and larger ionic radius results in the enhancement of Li+ concentration in electrolytes and lattice volume, benefiting the Li+ migration. Therefore, the modified glass-ceramic Li4.025Sn0.975Bi0.025S4 exhibits an ionic conductivity of 1.35 × 10–4 S cm–1 at room temperature, which is twice as high as that of pure Li4SnS4. Moreover, the soft acid characteristic of Bi3+ can further ensure the air stability of Li4SnS4 based on the hard and soft acid and base theory. The findings revealed from this research provide a potential avenue for improving the performance of air-stable Li4SnS4 solid-state electrolytes for future large-scale applications.

Abstract:All-solid-state lithium sulfur batteries (ASSLSBs) employing sulfide-based solid electrolytes have gained widespread attention for their high energy density and intrinsic safety. Li10SnP2S12 is identified as one of the most rivaling candidates in sulfide electrolytes. Herein, a highly Li-ion-conductive Li10SnP2S12 solid-state electrolyte (SSE) is synthesized via a combination of high-energy ball-milling and heat treatment processes, which is more facile and efficient compared with other previously reported methods. The obtained Li10SnP2S12 SSE exhibits high ionic conductivity (3.2 X 10(-3) S cm(-1)) at room temperature (RT). The effects of the annealing temperature on the Li-ion conductivity and activation energy of Li10SnP2S12 are also thoroughly studied. Moreover, the ASSLSBs based on the Li10SnP2S12 electrolyte are constructed, and they deliver a high initial capacity of 1601.7 mAh g(-1) at 40 mA g(-1). A favorable capacity retention upon cycling and a good rate performance are also achieved at RT. Concomitantly, the Coulombic efficiency approaches 100% during the prolonged cycling. This work tremendously accelerates the practical applications of the Li10SnP2S12 SSE among the emerging high-energy ASSLSBs.

An LSnPS core‐shell structured cathode material was fabricated on the surface of a high‐capacity electrode using a low‐cost and environmentally friendly mechano‐fusion method. By employing this strategy, an outstanding all‐solid‐state battery with superior characteristics, such as high capacity and extended cycle life, was achieved.

Integrating Lithium Sulfide as a Single Ionic Conductor Interphase for Stable All-Solid-State Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:As a very prospective solid-state electrolyte, Li10GeP2S12 (LGPS) exhibits high ionic conductivity comparable to liquid electrolytes. However, severe self-decomposition and Li dendrite propagation of LGPS will be triggered due to the thermodynamic incompatibility with Li metal anode. Herein, by adopting a facile chemical vapor deposition method, an artificial solid electrolyte interphase composed of Li2S is proposed as a single ionic conductor to promote the interface stability of LGPS toward Li. The good electronic insulation coupled with ionic conduction property of Li2S effectively blocks electron transfer from Li to LGPS while enabling smooth passage of Li ions. Meanwhile, the generated Li2S layer remains good interface compatibility with LGPS, which is verified by the stable Li-plating/stripping operation for over 500 h at 0.15 mA cm-2. Consequently, the all-solid-state Li-S batteries (ASSLSBs) with a Li2S layer demonstrate superb capacity retention of 90.8% at 0.2 mA cm-2 after 100 cycles. Even at the harsh condition of 90 °C, the cell can deliver a high reversible capacity of 1318.8 mAh g-1 with decent capacity retention of 88.6% after 100 cycles. This approach offers a new insight for interface modification between LGPS and Li and the realization of ASSLSBs with stable cycle life.

In this study, a nanoscale Li1.4 Al0.4 Ti1.6 (PO4 )3 (LATP) phosphate coating is reasonably constructed on the surface of single-crystal LiNi0.6 Co0.2 Mn0.2 O2 particles to achieve cathode/electrolyte interfacial stability. The conformal LATP layer with inherent high-voltage stability can effectively suppress the oxidation decomposition of the electrolyte and demonstrate chemical inertness to both the oxide cathode and Li10 SnP2 S12 electrolyte. ASSLBs with an LATP-modified cathode exhibited a high initial discharge capacity (152.1 mAh g-1 ), acceptable rate capability, and superior cycling performance with a capacity retention of 87.6% after 100 cycles at 0.1 C. Interfacial modification is an effective approach for achieving high-performance sulfide-based ASSLBs with superior interfacial stability.

Abstract:The instability of Li10GeP2S12 towards moisture and lithium metal are two challenges for its application in all‐solid‐state lithium batteries. In this work, Li10GeP2S12 is fluorinated to form a LiF coated core‐shell solid electrolyte LiF@Li10GeP2S12. Density‐functional theory calculations confirm the hydrolysis mechanism of Li10GeP2S12 solid electrolyte, including H2O adsorption on Li atoms of Li10GeP2S12 and the subsequent PS43− dissociation affected by hydrogen bond. The hydrophobic LiF shell can reduce the adsorption site, thus resulting in superior moisture stability when exposing in 30% relative humidity air. Moreover, with LiF shell, Li10GeP2S12 shows one order lower electronic conductivity, which can significantly suppress lithium dendrite growth and reduce the side reaction between Li10GeP2S12 and lithium, realizing three times higher critical current density to 3 mA cm−2. The assembled LiNbO3@LiCoO2/LiF@Li10GeP2S12/Li battery exhibits initial discharge capacity of 101.0 mAh g−1 with a capacity retention of 94.8% after 1000 cycles at 1 C. Abstract:Sulfide‐based solid‐state electrolytes (SSEs) for all‐solid‐state Li metal batteries (ASSLMBs) are attracting significant attention due to their high ionic conductivity, inherently soft properties, and decent mechanical strength. However, the poor incompatibility with Li metal and air sensitivity have hindered their application. Herein, the Sn (IV) substitution for P (V) in argyrodite sulfide Li6PS5I (LPSI) SSEs is reported, in the preparation of novel LPSI‐xSn SSEs (where x is the Sn substitution percentage). Appropriate aliovalent element substitutions with larger atomic radius (R > R) provides the optimized LPSI‐20Sn electrolyte with a 125 times higher ionic conductivity compared to that of the LPSI electrolyte. The high ionic conductivity of LPSI‐20Sn enables the rich I‐containing electrolyte to serve as a stabilized interlayer against Li metal in sulfide‐based ASSLMBs with outstanding cycling stability and rate capability. Most importantly, benefiting from the strong Sn–S bonding in Sn‐substituted electrolytes, the LPSI‐20Sn electrolyte shows excellent structural stability and improved air stability after exposure to O2 and moisture. The versatile Sn substitution in argyrodite LPSI electrolytes is believed to provide a new and effective strategy to achieve Li metal‐compatible and air‐stable sulfide‐based SSEs for large‐scale applications.
