Abstract:Solid-state batteries (SSBs) have received attention as a next-generation energy storage technology due to their potential to superior deliver energy density and safety compared to commercial Li-ion batteries. One of the main challenges limiting their practical implementation is the rapid capacity decay caused by the loss of contact between the cathode active material and the solid electrolyte upon cycling. Here, we use the promising high-voltage, low-cost LiNiMnO (LNMO) as a model system to demonstrate the importance of the cathode microstructure in SSBs. We design AlO-coated LNMO particles with a hollow microstructure aimed at suppressing electrolyte decomposition, minimizing volume change during cycling, and shortening the Li diffusion pathway to achieve maximum cathode utilization. When cycled with a LiPSCl solid electrolyte, we demonstrate a capacity retention above 70% after 100 cycles, with an active material loading of 27 mg cm (2.2 mAh cm) at a current density of 0.8 mA cm.
A Dynamically Stable Sulfide Electrolyte Architecture for High-Performance All-Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:All-solid-state batteries employing sulfide solid electrolyte and Li metal anode are promising because of their high safety and energy densities. However, the interface between Li metal and sulfides suffers from catastrophic instability which stems the practical use. Here, a dynamically stable sulfide electrolyte architecture to construct the hierarchy of interface stability is reported. By rationally designing the multilayer structures of sulfide electrolytes, the dynamic decomposing-alloying process from MS4 (M = Ge or Sn) unit in sulfide interlayer can significantly prohibit Li dendrite penetration is revealed. The abundance of highly electronic insulating decompositions, such as Li2S, at the sulfide interlayer interface helps to well constrain the dynamic decomposition process and preserve the long-term polarization stability is also highlighted. By using Li6PS5Cl||Li10SnP2S12||Li6PS5Cl electrolyte architecture, Li metal anode shows an unprecedented critical current density over 3 mA cm-2 and achieves the steady over-potential for approximate to 900 hours. Based upon the merits, the Li||LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 battery delivers a remarkable 75.3% retention even after 600 cycles at 1 C (1C-0.95 mA cm-2) under a low stack pressure of 15 MPa. A universal dynamically stable multilayer sulfide electrolyte to inhibit dendrite and stabilize polarization is reported. It is revealed that the dynamic decomposing-alloying process by the HVMEC-SSE interlayer prohibits dendrite penetration. Li anode shows an unprecedented critical current density over 3 mA cm-2 and holds the steady over-potential for approximate to 900 h. Therefore, the development of next-generation batteries is of great technical interest nowadays. Solid state lithium batteries have attracted considerable attention because the replacement of an organic liquid electrolyte with a safer and more reliable inorganic solid electrolyte simplifies the battery design and improves safety and durability of the battery [1]. A crucial material to develop solid state batteries is a solid electrolyte with high Li+ ion conductivity at room temperature. Among different kinds of solid electrolytes, inorganic sulfide-based solid electrolytes are one of the most promising candidates for solid state lithium batteries due to the high ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical window and ease of forming framework structures [2-3]. However, there are still many challenges for the commercialization of solid state lithium batteries with sulfide-based electrolyte [4-5], for instance, the electrolyte/electrodes interface and air stability of sulfide-based electrolytes need to be further improved, and advanced manufacturing technologies are required as well. In this presentation, several strategies to enhance ionic conductivity of sulfide-based solid electrolytes are deliberated; an ionic conductivity as high as 3.0 mS/cm has been achieved. We will then summarize the research progresses of solid state lithium batteries with sulfide-based electrolytes based on our work. Future research trends and perspectives for facilitating further improvement on the performance of sulfide-based solid state batteries will also be discussed. Abstract:Due to their high ionic conductivity and adeciduate mechanical features for lamination, sulfide composites have received increasing attention as solid electrolyte in all‐solid‐state batteries. Their smaller electronegativity and binding energy to Li ions and bigger atomic radius provide high ionic conductivity and make them attractive for practical applications. In recent years, noticeable efforts have been made to develop high‐performance sulfide solid‐state electrolytes. However, sulfide solid‐state electrolytes still face numerous challenges including: 1) the need for a higher stability voltage window, 2) a better electrode–electrolyte interface and air stability, and 3) a cost‐effective approach for large‐scale manufacturing. Herein, a comprehensive update on the properties (structural and chemical), synthesis of sulfide solid‐state electrolytes, and the development of sulfide‐based all‐solid‐state batteries is provided, including electrochemical and chemical stability, interface stabilization, and their applications in high performance and safe energy storage.

Abstract:All‐solid‐state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) are considered as the next generation electrochemical energy storage devices because of their high safety and energy density, simple packaging, and wide operable temperature range. The critical component in ASSLBs is the solid‐state electrolyte. Among all solid‐state electrolytes, the sulfide electrolytes have the highest ionic conductivity and favorable interface compatibility with sulfur‐based cathodes. The ionic conductivity of sulfide electrolytes is comparable with or even higher than that of the commercial organic liquid electrolytes. However, several critical challenges for sulfide electrolytes still remain to be solved, including their narrow electrochemical stability window, the unstable interface between the electrolyte and the electrodes, as well as lithium dendrite formation in the electrolytes. Herein, the emerging sulfide electrolytes and preparation methods are reviewed. In particular, the required properties of the sulfide electrolytes, such as the electrochemical stabilities of the electrolytes and the compatible electrode/electrolyte interfaces are highlighted. The opportunities for sulfide‐based ASSLBs are also discussed.

Abstract:Taking advantage of high ionic conductivity and excellent processability, sulfide solid electrolytes hold enormous potential applications in all‐solid‐state batteries. However, the inferior air stability of these electrolytes impedes the further large‐scale production. In this review, we have introduced several promising sulfide electrolytes, and then summarized the strategies and mechanisms for improving their stability toward moist air. An all‐solid‐state battery enabled by the incombustible and highly Li‐ion conductive sulfide solid‐state electrolyte, is recognized to be a strong candidate for next‐generation of lithium‐ion batteries. Intensive research efforts have been devoted to developing the well‐suited sulfide electrolytes with outstanding performances. Although several types of sulfide electrolytes have achieved superionic conductivities with excellent deformability, the air‐sensitive behaviors of them are detrimental to the large‐scale production. Considerable efforts are in progress to tackle this issue via various strategies in recent years. This review provides an overview of several classes of promising sulfide solid electrolytes. The principle and strategies for improving the resistance of these sulfide electrolytes against air are thoroughly discussed. We also point out the major challenges that all‐solid‐state batteries and different types of sulfide electrolytes face for practical applications.

Abstract:Solid electrolytes are recognized as being pivotal to next-generation energy storage technologies. Sulfide electrolytes with high ionic conductivity represent some of the most promising materials to realize high-energy-density all-solid-state lithium batteries. Due to their soft nature, sulfides possess good wettability against Li metal and their preparation process is relatively effortless. High cell-level sulfide-based all-solid-state lithium batteries have gradually been realized in recent years. However, there are still several disadvantages that sulfide electrolytes need to overcome, including their sensitivity to humid air and instability to electrodes. Herein, the recent progress for sulfide electrolytes, with particular attention given to electrolyte synthesis mechanisms, electrochemical and chemical stability, interphase stabilization and all-solid-state lithium batteries with high cell-level energy density, is presented.

Abstract:The developing sulfide solid electrolyte is a promising way to overcome shuttle effect of polysulfide in the traditional liquid Li-S battery. However, an air stable sulfide solid electrolyte and competitive solid–solid interface structure must be constructed firstly. Herein, we have designed an organic–inorganic multi-scale composite electrolytes to overcome the interfacial issues of solid state Li-S batteries (SSLSBs). The organic–inorganic composite electrolyte consists of a gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) and an oxygen doped inorganic sulfide solid electrolyte. The O doped sulfide solid electrolyte improves its chemical stability and suppresses the lithium dendrites. A thin GPE film protects the crystal structural stability during cycles and greatly enhances the performance of O doped sulfide solid electrolyte due to the GPE not only constructs soft interface contact between S cathode and solid electrolyte, but also builds lithium ion transport paths by ionic liquid between them. Those SSLSBs display a very good cycling performance with the specific capacity of 1023 mAh/g after 50 cycles at 60 °C and 541 mAh/g after 150 cycles at 30 °C under same rate of 0.1 C. This study demonstrates that the development of advanced solid-state Li-S battery needs to fully integrate a number of technical advantages.

Abstract:Solid‐state batteries (SSBs) hold immense potential for improved energy density and safety compared to traditional batteries. However, existing solid‐state electrolytes (SSEs) face challenges in meeting the complex operational requirements of SSBs. In this study, we introduce a novel approach to address this issue by developing a metal‐organic framework (MOF) with customized bilayer zwitterionic nano‐channels (MOF‐BZN) as high‐performance SSEs. The bilayer zwitterionic nano‐channels consist of a rigid anionic MOF channel with chemically grafted soft multi‐cationic oligomers (MCOs) on the pore wall. This design enables selective superionic conduction, with MCOs restricting the movement of anions while coulombic interaction between MCOs and anionic framework promoting the dissociation of Li+. MOF‐BZN exhibits remarkable Li+ conductivity (8.76 × 10−4 S cm−1), high Li+ transference number (0.75), and a wide electrochemical window of up to 4.9 V at 30°C. Ultimately, the SSB utilizing flame retarded MOF‐BZN achieves an impressive specific energy of 419.6 Wh kganode+cathode+electrolyte−1 under constrained conditions of high cathode loading (20.1 mg cm−2) and limited lithium metal source. Regulating and Understanding the Compatibility of Sulfide Composite Solid-State Electrolyte in Nickel-Rich Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:In the pursuit of high-energy-density lithium batteries, composite solid-state electrolytes are highly favored due to the combination of flexibility and acceptable ionic conductivity. However, challenges such as unpredictable lithium dendrite growth, cathode material structural instability, and oxidative resistance at high voltages pose significant hurdles for solid-state batteries. To investigate the synergistic interactions of polymers and sulfides, a hybrid poly (1,3-dioxolane) and poly (polyethylene glycol diacrylate) blend was designed through in-situ polymerization, allowing LiFePO4//Li batteries to achieve an average coulombic efficiency exceeding 99% at 0.5C and stable cycling for at least 1000 h in lithium symmetric cells. Computational analysis and component detection demonstrate the stability of the components and the formation of a LiF-stabilized anode from lithium salt decomposition. Similarly, on the cathode side, when Li3PO4-coated LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 is used as the cathode material, a more stable interface suppresses cathode particles' collapse and harmful electrolytes' decomposition. In ambient environments, after 200 cycles at 0.5C, the capacity retention remains as high as 90.48%. Impedance changes by in-situ methods and component composition were further analyzed. This work integrates multiple methods and stabilizes and validates the anode and cathode interface, providing a promising approach and strategy for designing high-performance sulfide composite solid-state batteries.

Abstract:All-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) have attracted increasing attention due to their high safety and energy density. Among all corresponding solid electrolytes, sulfide electrolytes are considered to be the most promising ion conductors due to high ionic conductivities. Despite this, many challenges remain in the application of ASSLBs, including the stability of sulfide electrolytes, complex interfacial issues between sulfide electrolytes and oxide electrodes as well as unstable anodic interfaces. Although oxide cathodes remain the most viable electrode materials due to high stability and industrialization degrees, the matching of sulfide electrolytes with oxide cathodes is challenging for commercial use in ASSLBs. Based on this, this review will present an overview of emerging ASSLBs based on sulfide electrolytes and oxide cathodes and highlight critical properties such as compatible electrolyte/electrode interfaces. And by considering the current challenges and opportunities of sulfide electrolyte-based ASSLBs, possible research directions and perspectives are discussed.Graphic Abstract

Abstract:Owing to the advantages of high energy density and environmental friendliness, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been widely used as power sources in electric vehicles, energy storage systems and other devices. Conventional LIBs composed of liquid electrolytes (LEs) have potential safety hazards; thermal runaway easily leads to battery explosion and spontaneous combustion. To realize a large-scale energy storage system with higher safety and higher energy density, replacing LEs with solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) has been pursued. Among the many SSEs, sulfide SSEs are attractive because of their high ionic conductivities, easy processabilities and high thermostabilities. However, interfacial issues (interfacial reactions, chemomechanical failure, lithium dendrite formation, etc.) between sulfide SSEs and electrodes are factors limiting widespread application. In addition, the intrinsic interfacial issues of sulfide SSEs (electrochemical windows, diffusion mechanisms of Li+, etc.) should not be ignored. In this review, the behaviors, properties and mechanisms of interfaces in all-solid-state lithium batteries with a variety of sulfide SSEs are comprehensively summarized. Additionally, recent research progress on advanced characterization methods and designs used to stabilize interfaces is discussed. Finally, outlooks, challenges and possible interface engineering strategies are analyzed and proposed.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Sulfide electrolytes with high ionic conductivity and facile formability are expected to replace the conventional flammable liquid electrolyte to construct high-energy and safe all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs). However, the practical use of sulfide electrolytes is mainly obstructed by their high sensitivity to humidity and instability to the high-voltage oxide cathodes. Herein, we solve these two problems of sulfide electrolytes by constructing a Li2CO3 interface through a spontaneous gas-solid reaction and achieve the enhanced electrochemical performance of ASSBs. Coupled with bare LiCoO2, the ASSBs with CO2-treated electrolyte or fabricated in a CO2-rich environment show impressive electrochemical performance with remarkable rate performance (65 mAh/g at 3 C) and excellent cycling retention (91.2% retention over 1900 cycles) at voltage up to 4.5 V vs. Li+/Li. The improved performance is attributed to the enhanced interfacial stability with low resistance and demonstrates the practical feasibility and even superiority of sulfide electrolytes based on current battery fabrication conditions.

Abstract:In recent decades, all-solid-state lithium batteries have gained enormous attention due to the improved safety performance and high specific energy. However, the brittle nature of sulfide-based solid electrolytes and poor interface compatibility limit the long-cycle stability and high rate performance of ASSLBs. The utilization of a thick solid electrolyte further reduces the cell-level energy and power. Herein, we prepare a thin sulfide electrolyte film (65 μm) using modified Li6PS5Cl and poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO). Under a high loading of 4.46 mA h cm−2, the assembled cell employing this electrolyte film with LiNi0.7Co0.2Mn0.1O2 cathode and lithium-indium alloy anode maintains a 1000 stable cycles with 74% capacity retention and average 99.85% coulombic efficiency at 60 °C. The cell-level energy and power are increased by an order of magnitude compared with traditionally prepared solid-state batteries. An excellent specific power of 374.7 W kg−1 is delivered at the initial cycle. This modified electrolyte film is expected to be commercially produced in the near future.

Abstract:With the advantages of high ionic conductivity and wide electrochemical window, sulfide-based solid electrolyte becomes a current research hotspot of all-solid-state lithium batteries. Nevertheless, severe interfacial problem between the sulfide electrolyte and lithium metal remains a great challenge, which can render a high interfacial resistance and hinder the transfer of lithium ions through interface, ultimately degrading the cycling performance. Furthermore, lithium dendrites easily form inside the electrolyte, thus accelerating the dendrite-induced shorting behavior of the battery. In this work, Li2S layer is in-situ coated on the surface of the sulfide solid electrolyte Li7P3S11 for highly stable lithium metal battery. The Li2S layer can effectively prevent Li7P3S11 from reacting with lithium metal. Meanwhile, the incorporation of the lithium sulfide can inhibit the generation and growth of internal lithium dendrites, thereby improving the cycling stability. The all-solid-state batteries based on the new designed electrolyte exhibit remarkably enhanced cycling stability. This work provides a simple and effective strategy to suppress lithium dendrite and promotes the practical application of sulfide-based all-solid-state batteries.

Abstract:All-solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries (ASSLSBs) are particularly promising for the high theoretical performance. The utilization of solid-state electrolytes (SSE) also prevents the shuttle effect of polysulfides, inhibits the dendrite growth and improves the safety. However, the cycling stability of current ASSLSBs is still hindered by the unstable interface at both S and Li electrodes, due to complex chemical and electrochemical reactions between solid electrolytes and Li/S electrodes. To turn complexity to simplicity, LiBH4 with high reductivity and high compatibility with Li metal anode is selected as the SSE, spontaneously diverting the obstacle focused on the interface between LiBH4 and S. Motivated by the electrochemical formation process of commercial liquid-electrolyte lithium-ion batteries, we employ a facile thermal formation technology to initially stabilize the intermediate phase between LiBH4 and S within ASSLSBs. Accordingly, such ASSLSBs with thermal formation process show improved cycling stability with a capacity decay of only 0.33% per cycle, lower than 0.71% of the counterpart without thermal formation. This work not only comprehensively elucidates the main component of this intermediate phase upon thermal formation, but also shows the possibility of the ASSLSBs working at a wide temperature range 60-125 °C, once coupled with suitable solid-state electrolytes.

Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Frameworks-based Electrolytes with Controllable Hydrogen Bonding Networks for Solid-State Lithium Batteries

Abstract:The lack of stable solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) with high-ionic conductivity and rational design of electrode/electrolyte interfaces remains challenging for solid-state lithium batteries. Here, for the first time, a high-performance solid-state lithium-oxygen battery is developed based on the Li-ion-conducted hydrogen-bonded organic framework (LHOF) electrolyte and the core-shell HOF-DAT@CNT cathode with a few layers of HOF-DAT on surface of carbon nanotubes. Benefiting from the abundant dynamic hydrogen bonding network in LHOF-DAT SSEs, fast Li+ ion transport (2.2 × 10-4 S cm-1), a high Li+ transfer number (0.88), and a wide electrochemical window of 5.05 V are achieved. Symmetric batteries constructed with LHOF-DAT SSEs exhibit a stably cycled duration of over 1400 h, which mainly stems from the jumping sites that promote a uniformly high rate of Li+ flux and the hydrogen-bonding network structure that can relieve the structural changes during Li+ transport. LHOF-DAT SSEs-based Li-O2 batteries exhibit high specific capacity (10335 mAh g-1), and stable cycling life up to 150 cycles. Moreover, the solid-state lithium metal battery with LHOF-DAT SSEs endow good rate capability (128.8 mAh g-1 at 1 C), long-term discharge/charge stability (210 cycles). The design of LHOF-DAT SSEs opens an avenue for the development of novel SSEs-based solid-state lithium batteries.
