Abstract:We characterize the mixed discriminant of positive semi definite matrices using its most basic properties. As a corollary we establish its minimality among non negative and multi additive functionals.

Abstract:A generalized form of Fisher discriminant function is presented.It overcomes the limitations of two common discriminant functions.The presented form uniforms the discriminant functions in two subspaces of the dual subspace discriminant analysis(DSDA).A new orthogonal discriminant vector set is obtained by QR decomposition,and its discriminant property is approximate to that of the Foley-Sammon orthogonal discriminant vector set with smaller computational complexity.The experiments on ORL and JAFFE database show that theory analysis is consistent to the experimental results.

Abstract:If a reduced bivariate polynomial is quasi-homogeneous, then its discriminant is a monomial. Over fields of characteristic $0$, we show that if one adds another simple condition, this becomes an equivalence. We also give a third equivalent condition that is stated geometrically.

Abstract:We investigate the manifold $\cal{M}$ of (real) quadratic forms in n > 1 variables having a multiple eigenvalue. In addition to known facts, we prove that 1) $\cal{M}$ is irreducible, 2) in the case of n = 3, scalar matrices and only them are singular points on $\cal{M}$. For $n = 3$, $\cal{M}$ is also described as the straight cylinder over $\cal{M}$$_0$, where $\cal{M}$$_0$ is the cone over the orbit of the diagonal matrix $\diag(1,1,-2)$ by the orthogonal changes of coordinates. We analyze certain properties of this orbit, which occurs a diffeomorphic image of the projective plane.

Abstract:We consider the characterizations of positive definite as well as nonnegative definite quadratic forms in terms of the principal minors of the associated symmetric matrix. We briefly review some of the known proofs, including a classical approach via the Lagrange-Beltrami identity. For quadratic forms in up to 3 variables, we give an elementary and self-contained proof of Sylvester's Criterion for positive definiteness as well as for nonnegative definiteness. In the process, we obtain an explicit version of Lagrange-Beltrami identity for ternary quadratic forms.

Abstract:We call an n-tuple Q_1, ..., Q_n of positive definite nxn matrices alpha-conditioned for some alpha > 1 if the ratio of the largest among the eigenvalues of Q_1, ..., Q_n to the smallest among the eigenvalues of Q_1, ..., Q_n does not exceed alpha. An n-tuple is called doubly stochastic if the sum of Q_i is the identity matrix and the trace of each Q_i is 1. We prove that for any fixed alpha > 1 the mixed discriminant of an alpha-conditioned doubly stochastic n-tuple is n^{O(1)} e^{-n}. As a corollary, for any alpha > 1 fixed in advance, we obtain a polynomial time algorithm approximating the mixed discriminant of an alpha-conditioned n-tuple within a polynomial in n factor.

Abstract:We consider the problem of complex root classification, i.e., finding the conditions on the coefficients of a univariate polynomial for all possible multiplicity structures on its complex roots. It is well known that such conditions can be written as conjunctions of several polynomial equalities and one inequality in the coefficients. Those polynomials in the coefficients are called discriminants for multiplicities. It is also known that discriminants can be obtained by using repeated parametric gcd's. The resulting discriminants are usually nested determinants, i.e., determinants of matrices whose entries are determinants, and so on. In this paper, we give a new type of discriminants which are not based on repeated gcd's. The new discriminants are simpler in the sense that they are non-nested determinants and have smaller maximum degrees.

Abstract:We propose a general description on the unambiguous discrimination of mixed states according to the system-environment coupling, and present a procedure to reduce this to a standard semidefinite programming problem. In the two states case, we introduce the canonical vectors and partly simplify the problem to the case of discrimination between pairs of canonical vectors. By considering the positivity of the two by two matrices, we obtain a series of new upper bounds of the total success probability which depends on both the prior probabilities and specific state structures.

Abstract:According to several classical results by Bezout, Sylvester, Cayley, and others, the classical discriminant D_n of degree n polynomials may be expressed as the determinant of a matrix whose entries are much simpler polynomials in the coefficients of f. However, all of the determinantal formulae for D_n appearing in the classical literature are equivalent in the sense that the cokernels of their associated matrices are isomorphic as modules over the associated polynomial ring. This begs the question of whether there exist formulae which are not equivalent to the classical formulae and not trivial in the sense of having the same cokernel as the 1 x 1 matrix (D_n). In this paper, we construct an explicit non-classical formula: the presentation matrix of the open swallowtail first studied by Arnol'd and Givental. We study the properties of this formula, contrasting them with the properties of the classical formulae.

Abstract:We describe all inequalities among generalized diagonals in positive semi-definite matrices. These turn out to be governed by a simple partial order on the symmetric group. This provides an analogue of results of Drake, Gerrish, and Skandera on inequalities among generalized diagonals in totally nonnegative matrices.

Abstract:We consider the set $\mathcal M_n(\mathbb Z; H)$ of $n\times n$-matrices with integer elements of size at most $H$ and obtain upper bounds on the number of matrices from $\mathcal M_n(\mathbb Z; H)$, for which the characteristic polynomial has a fixed discriminant $d$. When $d=0$, this corresponds to counting matrices with a repeated eigenvalue, and thus is related to counting non-diagonalisable matrices. For $d\ne 0$, this problem seems not to have been studied previously, while for $d=0$, both our approach and the final result improve on those of A. J. Hetzel, J. S. Liew and K. Morrison (2007).

Abstract:Let $S_n(mathbb{Z})$ and $O_n(mathbb{Q})$ denote the set of all $ntimes n$ symmetric matrices over the ring of integers $mathbb{Z}$ and the set of all $ntimes n$ orthogonal matrices over the field of rational numbers $mathbb{Q}$, respectively. The paper is mainly concerned with the following problem: Given a matrix $Ain {S_n(mathbb{Z})}$. How can one find all rational orthogonal matrices $Qin{O_n(mathbb{Q})}$ such that $Q^TAQin {S_n(mathbb{Z})}$, and in particular, when does $Q^TAQin {S_n(mathbb{Z})}$ with $Qin{O_n(mathbb{Q})}$ imply that $Q$ is emph{a signed permutation matrix} (i.e., the matrix obtained from a permutation matrix $P$ by replacing each 1 in $P$ with 1 or $-1$)? A surprisingly simple answer was given in terms of whether the discriminant of the characteristic polynomial of $A$ is odd and square-free, which partially answers the above questions. More precisely, let $Delta_A=pm res(phi,phiu0027)$ be emph{the discriminant of matrix $A$}, where $res(phi,phiu0027)$ is emph{the resultant} of the characteristic polynomial $phi$ of $A$ and its derivative $phiu0027$. We show that if $Delta_A$ is odd and square-free, then $Q^TAQin {S_n(mathbb{Z})}$ with $Qin{O_n(mathbb{Q})}$ implies that $Q$ is a signed permutation matrix. As an application, we present a simple and efficient method for testing whether a graph is determined by the generalized spectrum, which significantly extends our previous work.

Abstract:Together with David Schlang we computed the discriminants of the invariant Hermitian forms for all indicator $o$ even degree absolutely irreducible characters of the ATLAS groups supplementing the tables of orthogonal determinants computed in collaboration with Richard Parker, Tobias Braun and Thomas Breuer. The methods that are used in the unitary case are described in this paper. A character has a well defined unitary discriminant, if and only if it is unitary stable, i.e. all irreducible unitary constituents have even degree. Computations for large degree characters are only possible because of a new method called {\em unitary condensation}. A suitable automorphism helps to single out a square class of the real subfield of the character field consisting of representatives of the discriminant of the invariant Hermitian forms. This square class can then be determined modulo enough primes.

Abstract:Considered is the multiplicative semigroup of ratios of products of principal minors bounded over all positive definite matrices. A long history of literature identifies various elements of this semigroup, all of which lie in a sub-semigroup generated by Hadamard-Fischer inequalities. Via cone-theoretic techniques and the patterns of nullity among positive semidefinite matrices, a semigroup containing all bounded ratios is given. This allows the complete determination of the semigroup of bounded ratios for 4-by-4 positive definite matrices, whose 46 generators include ratios not implied by Hadamard-Fischer and ratios not bounded by 1. For n > 4 it is shown that the containment of semigroups is strict, but a generalization of nullity patterns, of which one example is given, is conjectured to provide a finite determination of all bounded ratios.

Euler Discriminant of Complements of Hyperplanes

Abstract:The Euler discriminant of a family of very affine varieties is defined as the locus where the Euler characteristic drops. In this work, we study the Euler discriminant of families of complements of hyperplanes. We prove that the Euler discriminant is a hypersurface in the space of coefficients, and provide its defining equation in two cases: (1) when the coefficients are generic, and (2) when they are constrained to a proper subspace. In the generic case, we show that the multiplicities of the components can be recovered combinatorially. This analysis also recovers the singularities of an Euler integral. In the appendix, we discuss a relation to cosmological correlators.

Abstract:Manin and Schechtman introduced a family of arrangements of hyperplanes generalizing classical braid arrangements, which they called the $\textit{discriminantal arrangements}$. Athanasiadis proved a conjecture by Bayer and Brandt providing a full description of the combinatorics of discriminantal arrangements in the case of $\textit{very generic}$ arrangements. Libgober and Settepanella described a sufficient geometric condition for given arrangements to be $\textit{non very generic}$ in terms of the notion of dependency for a certain arrangement. Settepanella and the author generalized the notion of dependency introducing $r$-sets and $K_\mathbb{T}$-vector sets, and provided a sufficient condition for non very genericity but still not convenient to verify by hand. In this paper we give a classification of the $r$-sets, and a more explicit and tractable condition for non very genericity.

Abstract:Discriminant ideals of noncommutative algebras $A$, which are module finite over a central sublagebra $C$, are key invariants that carry important information about $A$, such as the sum of the squares of the dimensions of its irreducible modules with a given central character. There has been substantial research on the computation of discriminants, but very little is known about the computation of discriminant ideals. In this paper we carry out a detailed investigation of the lowest discriminant ideals of Cayley-Hamilton Hopf algebras in the sense of De Concini, Reshetikhin, Rosso and Procesi, whose identity fiber algebras are basic. The lowest discriminant ideals are the most complicated ones, because they capture the most degenerate behaviour of the fibers in the exact opposite spectrum of the picture from the Azumaya locus. We provide a description of the zero sets of the lowest discriminant ideals of Cayley-Hamilton Hopf algebras in terms of maximally stable modules of Hopf algebras, irreducible modules that are stable under tensoring with the maximal possible number of irreducible modules with trivial central character. In important situations, this is shown to be governed by the actions of the winding automorphism groups. The results are illustrated with applications to the group algebras of central extensions of abelian groups, big quantum Borel subalgebras at roots of unity and quantum coordinate rings at roots of unity.
