Abstract:We describe all inequalities among generalized diagonals in positive semi-definite matrices. These turn out to be governed by a simple partial order on the symmetric group. This provides an analogue of results of Drake, Gerrish, and Skandera on inequalities among generalized diagonals in totally nonnegative matrices.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to investigate inequalities on symmetric sums of diagonalizable and positive definite tensors. In particular, we generalize the well-known Hlawka and Popoviciu inequalities to the case of diagonalizable and positive definite tensors. As corollaries, we extend Hlawka and Popoviciu inequalities for the combinatorial determinant, permanent and immanant of tensors, and generalized tensor functions.

Abstract:We characterize ratios of permanents of (generalized) submatrices which are bounded on the set of all totally positive matrices. This provides a permanental analog of results of Fallat, Gekhtman, and Johnson [{\em Adv.\ Appl.\ Math.} {\bf 30} no.\ 3, (2003) pp.\ 442--470] concerning ratios of matrix minors. We also extend work of Drake, Gerrish, and the first author [{\em Electron.\ J.\ Combin.,} {\bf 11} no.\ 1, (2004) Note 6] by characterizing the differences of monomials in $\mathbb{Z}[x_{1,1},x_{1,2},...,x_{n,n}]$ which evaluate positively on the set of all totally positive $n \times n$ matrices.

Abstract:In matrix theory and numerical analysis there are two very famous and important results. One is Gersgorin circle theorem, the other is strictly diagonally dominant theorem. They have important application and research value, and have been widely used and studied. In this paper, we investigate generalized diagonally dominant matrices and matrix eigenvalue inclusion regions. A class of G-function pairs is proposed, which extends the concept of G-functions. Thirteen kind of G-function pairs are established. Their properties and characteristics are studied. By using these special G-function pairs, we construct a large number of sufficient and necessary conditions for strictly diagonally dominant matrices and matrix eigenvalue inclusion regions. These conditions and regions are composed of different combinations of G-function pairs, deleted absolute row sums and column sums of matrices. The results extend, include and are better than some classical results.

Abstract:We analyze the fulfillment of the simultaneous diagonalization (SD via congruence) property for any two real matrices, and develop sufficient conditions expressed in different way to those appeared in the last few years. These conditions are established under a different perspective, and in any case, they supplement and clarify other similar results published elsewhere. Following our point of view reflected in a previous work, we offer some necessary and sufficient conditions, different in nature to those in Jiang and Li (SIAM J Optim 26:1649–1668, 2016), for SD: roughly speaking our approach is more geometric and needs to compute images and kernels of matrices; whereas that in Jiang and Li (SIAM J Optim 26:1649–1668, 2016) requires to compute determinant and canonical forms. The bidimensional situation is particularly analyzed, providing new more precise characterizations than those in higher dimension and joint those given earlier by the authors. In addition, we also establish the connection of our characterization of SD with that provided in Jiang and Li (SIAM J Optim 26:1649–1668, 2016).

Abstract:Diagonally dominant matrices have many applications in systems and control theory. Linear dynamical systems with scaled diagonally dominant drift matrices, which include stable positive systems, allow for scalable stability analysis. For example, it is known that Lyapunov inequalities for this class of systems admit diagonal solutions. In this paper, we present an extension of scaled diagonally dominance to block partitioned matrices. We show that our definition describes matrices admitting block-diagonal solutions to Lyapunov inequalities and that these solutions can be computed using linear algebraic tools. We also show how in some cases the Lyapunov inequalities can be decoupled into a set of lower dimensional linear matrix inequalities, thus leading to improved scalability. We conclude by illustrating some advantages and limitations of our results with numerical examples.

Abstract:The enumeration of diagonally symmetric alternating sign matrices (DSASMs) is studied, and a Pfaffian formula is obtained for the number of DSASMs of any fixed size, where the entries for the Pfaffian are positive integers given by simple binomial coefficient expressions. This result provides the first known case of an exact enumeration formula for an alternating sign matrix symmetry class in which a simple product formula does not seem to exist. Pfaffian formulae are also obtained for DSASM generating functions associated with several natural statistics, including the number of nonzero strictly upper triangular entries in a DSASM, the number of nonzero diagonal entries in a DSASM, and the column of the unique 1 in the first row of a DSASM. The proofs of these results involve introducing a version of the six-vertex model whose configurations are in bijection with DSASMs of fixed size, and obtaining a Pfaffian expression for its partition function. Various further results and conjectures are also obtained, including some related to the exact enumeration of off-diagonally symmetric alternating sign matrices, and some related to the asymptotic enumeration of DSASMs and other classes of alternating sign matrices.

On Simultaneous Symplectic Diagonalization in the sense of Williamson's Theorem

Abstract:Williamson's theorem is well known for symmetric matrices. In this paper, we state and re-derive some of the cases of Williamson's theorem for symmetric positive-semi definite matrices and symmetric matrices having negative index 1, due to Hörmander. We prove theorems that guarantee conditions under which two symmetric positive-definite matrices can be simultaneously diagonalized in the sense of Williamson's theorem and their corollaries. Finally, we provide an application of this result to physical systems and another connecting the decompositions for the degenerate and non-degenerate cases, involving phase space constraints that we later apply to phase space cylinders and ellipsoids via symplectic capacities.

A Matrix Generalization of the Hardy-Littlewood-Pólya Rearrangement Inequality and Its Applications

Abstract:We prove a generalization of the Hardy-Littlewood-Pólya rearrangement inequality to positive definite matrices. The inequality can be seen as a commutation principle in the sense of Iusem and Seeger. An important instrument in the proof is a first-order perturbation formula for a certain spectral function, which could be of independent interests. The inequality is then extended to rectangular matrices. Using our main results, we derive new inequalities for several distance-like functions encountered in various signal processing or machine learning applications.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a graph with adjacency matrix $A(G)$ and let $D(G)$ be the diagonal matrix of the degrees of $G$. For every real $\alpha\in\left[ 0,1\right] $, write $A_{\alpha}\left( G\right) $ for the matrix \[ A_{\alpha}\left( G\right) =\alpha D\left( G\right) +(1-\alpha)A\left( G\right) . \] Let $\alpha_{0}\left( G\right) $ be the smallest $\alpha$ for which $A_{\alpha}(G)$ is positive semidefinite. It is known that $\alpha_{0}\left( G\right) \leq1/2$. The main results of this paper are: (1) if $G$ is $d$-regular then \[ \alpha_{0}=\frac{-\lambda_{\min}(A(G))}{d-\lambda_{\min}(A(G))}, \] where $\lambda_{\min}(A(G))$ is the smallest eigenvalue of $A(G)$; (2) $G$ contains a bipartite component if and only if $\alpha_{0}\left( G\right) =1/2$; (3) if $G$ is $r$-colorable, then $\alpha_{0}\left( G\right) \geq1/r$.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that if 2(lambda) < kappa and A subset of [kappa](lambda) is a MADF then the generalized Mrowka space psi(A\B) has no G(lambda) -diagonal, where B subset of A and vertical bar B vertical bar <= lambda. If a topological space X has a regular G(lambda) -diagonal and a local decreasing base of cardinality chi(X) for each x is an element of X, then vertical bar X vertical bar <= 2(dc(X).)(chi(X).lambda) , where dc(X) is the discrete cellularity of X and chi(X) is the character of X. As a corollary, we prove that if X is a DCCC (and hence, DC(omega(1)), weakly Lindelof or star Lindelof) first countable space with a regular G(delta)-diagonal then vertical bar X vertical bar <= 2(omega), which gives a positive answer to a question in [17]. Finally, we give another counterexample to a question of Ginsburg and Woods ([6]), which has nicer properties than the counterexamples constructed in [15] and [16].

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce properly-invariant diagonality measures of Hermitian positive-definite matrices. These diagonality measures are defined as distances or divergences between a given positive-definite matrix and its diagonal part. We then give closed-form expressions of these diagonality measures and discuss their invariance properties. The diagonality measure based on the log-determinant α-divergence is general enough as it includes a diagonality criterion used by the signal processing community as a special case. These diagonality measures are then used to formulate minimization problems for finding the approximate joint diagonalizer of a given set of Hermitian positive-definite matrices. Numerical computations based on a modified Newton method are presented and commented.

On Positive Duality Gaps in Semidefinite Programming

Abstract:We present a novel analysis of semidefinite programs (SDPs) with positive duality gaps, i.e. different optimal values in the primal and dual problems. These SDPs are extremely pathological, often unsolvable, and also serve as models of more general pathological convex programs. However, despite their allure, they are not well understood even when they have just two variables. We first completely characterize two variable SDPs with positive gaps; in particular, we transform them into a standard form that makes the positive gap trivial to recognize. The transformation is very simple, as it mostly uses elementary row operations coming from Gaussian elimination. We next show that the two variable case sheds light on larger SDPs with positive gaps: we present SDPs in any dimension in which the positive gap is caused by the same structure as in the two variable case. We analyze a fundamental parameter, the {\em singularity degree} of the duals of our SDPs, and show that it is the largest that can result in a positive gap. We finally generate a library of difficult SDPs with positive gaps (some of these SDPs have only two variables) and present a computational study.

Abstract:We consider invertible, row diagonally dominant real matrices and give inequalities on their minors and diagonal entries of their inverses. A very special case is that all diagonal entries of an inverse, of a row stochastic, row diagonally dominant and invertible matrix, are at least 1, with strict inequality at least when the dominance is strict. This was conjectured in international trade theory in economics and motivated the present work (though much more is proven). Some of the results generalize previously known facts for M -matrices.

Abstract:Bidiagonal matrices are widespread in numerical linear algebra, not least because of their use in the standard algorithm for computing the singular value decomposition and their appearance as LU factors of tridiagonal matrices. We show that bidiagonal matrices have a number of interesting properties that make them powerful tools in a variety of problems, especially when they are multiplied together. We show that the inverse of a product of bidiagonal matrices is insensitive to small componentwise relative perturbations in the factors if the factors or their inverses are nonnegative. We derive componentwise rounding error bounds for the solution of a linear system $Ax = b$, where $A$ or $A^{-1}$ is a product $B_1 B_2\dots B_k$ of bidiagonal matrices, showing that strong results are obtained when the $B_i$ are nonnegative or have a checkerboard sign pattern. We show that given the \fact\ of an $n\times n$ totally nonnegative matrix $A$ into the product of bidiagonal matrices, $\|A^{-1}\|_{\infty}$ can be computed in $O(n^2)$ flops and that in floating-point arithmetic the computed result has small relative error, no matter how large $\|A^{-1}\|_{\infty}$ is. We also show how factorizations involving bidiagonal matrices of some special matrices, such as the Frank matrix and the Kac--Murdock--Szegö matrix, yield simple proofs of the total nonnegativity and other properties of these matrices.
