Abstract:For the family of polynomials in one variable <math>P:=xn+a1xn−1+⋯+an</math>, <math>n≥4</math>, we consider its higher-order discriminant sets <math>{D˜m=0}</math>, where <math>D˜m:=Res(P,P(m))</math>, <math>m=2</math>, …, <math>n−2</math>, and their projections in the spaces of the variables <math>ak:=(a1,…,ak−1,ak+1,…,an)</math>. Set <math>P(m):=∑j=0n−mcjajxn−m−j</math>, <math>Pm,k:=ckP−xmP(m)</math>. We show that <math>Res(D˜m,∂D˜m/∂ak,ak)=Am,kBm,kCm,k2</math>, where <math>Am,k=ann−m−k</math>, <math>Bm,k=Res(Pm,k,Pm,k′)</math> if <math>1≤k≤n−m</math> and <math>Am,k=an−mn−k</math>, <math>Bm,k=Res(P(m),P(m+1))</math> if <math>n−m+1≤k≤n</math>. The equation <math>Cm,k=0</math> defines the projection in the space of the variables <math>ak</math> of the closure of the set of values of <math>(a1,…,an)</math> for which P and <math>P(m)</math> have two distinct roots in common. The polynomials <math>Bm,k,Cm,k∈C[ak]</math> are irreducible. The result is generalized to the case when <math>P(m)</math> is replaced by a polynomial <math>P⁎:=∑j=0n−mbjajxn−m−j</math>, <math>0≠bi≠bj≠0</math> for <math>i≠j</math>.
