Abstract:The paper studies the probability for a Galois group of a random polynomial to be $A_n$. We focus on the so-called large box model, where we choose the coefficients of the polynomial independently and uniformly from $\{-L,\ldots, L\}$. The state-of-the-art upper bound is $O(L^{-1})$, due to Bhargava. We conjecture a much stronger upper bound $L^{-n/2 +\epsilon}$, and that this bound is essentially sharp. We prove strong lower bounds both on this probability and on the related probability of the discriminant being a square.

Abstract:Letting f be a transcendental meromorphic function, we consider the value distribution of the differential polynomials φfl(f(k))n−a, where φ(¬≡0) is a small function of f, l(≥2), n(≥1), k(≥1) are integers and a is a non-zero constant, and obtain an important inequality concerning the reduced counting function of φfl(f(k))n−a. Our results improve and generalize the results obtained by Xu and Ye, Karmakar and Sahoo, Chakraborty et.al, and Chen and Huang.

Abstract:We survey some of the mechanisms used to prove that naturally defined sequences in combinatorics are log-concave. Among these mechanisms are Alexandrov's inequality for mixed discriminants, the Alexandrov Fenchel inequality for mixed volumes, Lorentzian polynomials, and the Hard Lefschetz theorem. We use these mechanisms to prove some new log-concavity and extremal results related to partially ordered sets and matroids. We present joint work with Ramon van Handel and Xinmeng Zeng to give a complete characterization for the extremals of the Kahn-Saks inequality. We extend Stanley's inequality for regular matroids to arbitrary matroids using the technology of Lorentzian polynomials. As a result, we provide a new proof of the weakest Mason conjecture. We also prove necessary and sufficient conditions for the Gorenstein ring associated to the basis generating polynomial of a matroid to satisfy Hodge-Riemann relations of degree one on the facets of the positive orthant.

Abstract:We study the Galois groups $G_f$ of degree $2n$ reciprocal (a.k.a. palindromic) polynomials $f$ of height at most $H$, finding that $G_f$ falls short of the maximal possible group $S_2 \wr S_n$ for a proportion of all $f$ bounded above and below by constant multiples of $H^{-1} \log H$, whether or not $f$ is required to be monic. This answers a 1998 question of Davis-Duke-Sun and extends Bhargava's 2023 resolution of van der Waerden's 1936 conjecture on the corresponding question for general polynomials. Unlike in that setting, the dominant contribution comes not from reducible polynomials but from those $f$ for which $(-1)^n f(1) f(-1)$ is a square, causing $G_f$ to lie in an index-$2$ subgroup.

Sign changes of short character sums and real zeros of Fekete polynomials

Abstract:We discuss a general approach producing quantitative bounds on the number of sign changes of the weighted sums $$\sum_{n\le x}f(n)w_n$$ where $f:\mathbb{N}\to \mathbb{R}$ is a family of multiplicative functions and $w_n\in\mathbb{R}$ are certain <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://weights.As" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> a consequence, we show that for a typical fundamental discriminant $D,$ the partial sums of the real character $\chi_D$ change sign $\gg (\log\log D)/\log\log\log \log D$ times on very short initial interval (which goes beyond the range in Vinogradov's conjecture). We also prove that the number of real zeros (localized away from $1$) of the Fekete polynomial associated to a typical fundamental discriminant $D$ is $\gg \frac{\log\log D}{\log\log\log\log D}.$ This comes close to establishing a conjecture of Baker and Montgomery which predicts $\asymp \log \log D$ real zeros. Finally, the same approach shows that almost surely for large $x\ge 1$, the partial sums $\sum_{n\le y}f(n)$ of a (Rademacher) random multiplicative function exhibit $\gg \log \log x/\log \log\log\log x$ sign changes on the interval $[1,x].$ These results rely crucially on uniform quantitative estimates for the joint distribution of $-\frac{L'}{L}(s, \chi_D)$ at several points $s$ in the vicinity of the central point $s=1/2$, as well as concentration results for $\log L(s,\chi_D)$ in the same range, which we establish. In the second part of the paper, we obtain, for large families of discriminants, ``non-trivial" upper bounds on the number of real zeros of Fekete polynomials, breaking the square root bound. Finally, we construct families of discriminants with associated Fekete polynomials having no zeros away from $1.$

The Least Common Multiple of Polynomial Values over Function Fields

Abstract:Cilleruelo conjectured that for an irreducible polynomial $f \in \mathbb{Z}[X]$ of degree $d \geq 2$ one has $$\log\left[\mathrm{lcm}(f(1),f(2),\ldots f(N))\right]\sim(d-1)N\log N$$ as $N \to \infty$. He proved it in the case $d=2$ but it remains open for every polynomial with $d>2$. We investigate the function field analogue of the problem by considering polynomials over the ring $\mathbb F_q[T]$. We state an analog of Cilleruelo's conjecture in this setting: denoting by $$L_f(n) := \mathrm{lcm} \left(f\left(Q\right)\ : \ Q \in \mathbb F_q[T]\mbox{ monic},\, \mathrm{deg}\,Q = n\right)$$ we conjecture that \begin{equation}\label{eq:conjffabs}\mathrm{deg}\, L_f(n) \sim c_f \left(d-1\right) nq^n,\ n \to \infty\end{equation} ($c_f$ is an explicit constant dependent only on $f$, typically $c_f=1$). We give both upper and lower bounds for $L_f(n)$ and show that the conjectured asymptotic holds for a class of ``special" polynomials, initially considered by Leumi in this context, which includes all quadratic polynomials and many other examples as well. We fully classify these special polynomials. We also show that $\mathrm{deg}\, L_f(n) \sim \mathrm{deg}\,\mathrm{rad}\left(L_f(n)\right)$ (in other words the corresponding LCM is close to being squarefree), which is not known over $\mathbb Z$.

Monogenic Quartic Polynomials and Their Galois Groups

Abstract:A monic polynomial $f(x)\in {\mathbb Z}[x]$ of degree $N$ is called monogenic if $f(x)$ is irreducible over ${\mathbb Q}$ and $\{1,\theta,\theta^2,\ldots ,\theta^{N-1}\}$ is a basis for the ring of integers of ${\mathbb Q}(\theta)$, where $f(\theta)=0$. In this article, we use the classification of the Galois groups of quartic polynomials, due to Kappe and Warren, to investigate the existence of infinite collections of monogenic quartic polynomials having a prescribed Galois group, such that each member of the collection generates a distinct quartic field. With the exception of the cyclic case, we provide such an infinite single-parameter collection for each possible Galois group. We believe these examples are new, and we provide evidence to support this belief by showing that they are distinct from other infinite collections in the current literature. Finally, we devote a separate section to a discussion concerning, what we believe to be, the still-unresolved cyclic case.

Uniform exponent bounds on the number of primitive extensions of number fields

Abstract:A folklore conjecture asserts the existence of a constant $c_n > 0$ such that $\#\mathcal{F}_n(X) \sim c_n X$ as $X\to \infty$, where $\mathcal{F}_n(X)$ is the set of degree $n$ extensions $K/\mathbb{Q}$ with discriminant bounded by $X$. This conjecture is known if $n \leq 5$, but even the weaker conjecture that there exists an absolute constant $C\geq 1$ such that $\#\mathcal{F}_n(X) \ll_n X^C$ remains unknown and apparently out of reach. Here, we make progress on this weaker conjecture (which we term the "uniform exponent conjecture") in two ways. First, we reduce the general problem to that of studying relative extensions of number fields whose Galois group is an almost simple group in a natural primitive permutation representation. Second, for almost all such groups, we prove the strongest known upper bound on the number of such extensions. These bounds have the effect of resolving the uniform exponent conjecture for solvable groups, sporadic groups, exceptional groups, and classical groups of bounded rank.

Abstract:For $ f\in\mathbb{Z}[X] $ an irreducible polynomial of degree $ n $, the Cilleruelo's conjecture states that$$\log(\mbox{lcm}(f(1),\dots,f(M)))\sim(n-1)M\log M$$as $ M\rightarrow+\infty $, where $ \mbox{lcm}(f(1),\dots,f(M)) $ is the least common multiple of $f(1),\dots,f(M)$. It's well-known for $ n=1 $ as a consequence of Dirichlet's Theorem for primes in arithmetic progression, and it was proved by Cilleruelo for quadratic polynomials. Recently the conjecture was shown by Rudnick and Zehavi for a large family of polynomials of any degree. We want to investigate an average version of the conjecture for $S_n$-polynomials with integral coefficients over a fixed extension $K/\mathbb{Q}$ by considering the least common multiple of ideals of $\mathcal{O}_K$.

New Bounds on Quotient Polynomials with Applications to Exact Divisibility and Divisibility Testing of Sparse Polynomials

Abstract:We prove that for monic polynomials $f, g \in \mathbb{C}[x]$ such that $g$ divides $f$, the $\ell_2$-norm of the quotient polynomial $f/g$ is bounded by $\lVert f \rVert_1 \cdot \tilde{O}(\lVert{g}\rVert_0^3\text{deg}^2{ f})^{\lVert{g}\rVert_0 - 1}$. This improves upon the previously known exponential (in $\text{deg}{ f}$) bounds for general polynomials. Our results implies that the trivial long division algorithm runs in quasi-linear time relative to the input size and number of terms of the quotient polynomial $f/g$, thus solving a long-standing problem on exact divisibility of sparse polynomials. We also study the problem of bounding the number of terms of $f/g$ in some special cases. When $f, g \in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ and $g$ is a cyclotomic-free (i.e., it has no cyclotomic factors) trinomial, we prove that $\lVert{f/g}\rVert_0 \leq O(\lVert{f}\rVert_0 \text{size}({f})^2 \cdot \log^6{\text{deg}{ g}})$. When $g$ is a binomial with $g(\pm 1) \neq 0$, we prove that the sparsity is at most $O(\lVert{f}\rVert_0 ( \log{\lVert{f}\rVert_0} + \log{\lVert{f}\rVert_{\infty}}))$. Both upper bounds are polynomial in the input-size. We leverage these results and give a polynomial time algorithm for deciding whether a cyclotomic-free trinomial divides a sparse polynomial over the integers. As our last result, we present a polynomial time algorithm for testing divisibility by pentanomials over small finite fields when $\text{deg}{ f} = \tilde{O}(\text{deg}{ g})$.

Abstract:Given a finite transitive permutation group $G$, we investigate number fields $F/\mathbb{Q}$ of Galois group $G$ whose discriminant is only divisible by small prime powers. This generalizes previous investigations of number fields with squarefree discriminant. In particular, we obtain a comprehensive result on number fields with cubefree discriminant. Our main tools are arithmetic-geometric, involving in particular an effective criterion on ramification in specializations of Galois covers.

Abstract:We consider a certain left action by the monoid $SL_2(\mathbf{N}_0)$ on the set of divisor pairs $\mathcal{D}_f := \{ (m, n) \in \mathbf{N}_0 \times \mathbf{N}_0 : m \lvert f(n) \}$ where $f \in \mathbf{Z}[x]$ is a polynomial with integer coefficients. We classify all polynomials in $\mathbf{Z}[x]$ for which this action extends to an invertible map $\hat{F}_f: SL_2(\mathbf{N}_0) \rightarrow \mathcal{D}_f$. We call such polynomials $\textit{enumerable}$. One of these polynomials happens to be $f(n) = n^2 + 1$. Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth curve over a finitely generated field $k$, and let $\ell$ be a prime different from the characteristic of $k$. We analyze the dynamics of the Galois action on the deformation rings of mod $\ell$ representations of the geometric fundamental group of $X$. Using this analysis, we prove analogues of the Shafarevich and Fontaine-Mazur finiteness conjectures for function fields over algebraically closed fields in arbitrary characteristic, and a weak variant of the Frey-Mazur conjecture for function fields in characteristic zero. For example, we show that if $X$ is a normal, connected variety over $\mathbb{C}$, the (typically infinite) set of representations of $\pi_1(X^{\text{an}})$ into $GL_n(\overline{\mathbb{Q}_\ell})$, which come from geometry, has no limit points. As a corollary, we deduce that if $L$ is a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_\ell$, then the set of representations of $\pi_1(X^{\text{an}})$ into $GL_n(L)$, which arise from geometry, is finite.

Abstract:A recurring task in particle physics and statistics is to compute the complex critical points of a product of powers of affine-linear functions. The logarithmic discriminant characterizes exponents for which such a function has a degenerate critical point in the corresponding hyperplane arrangement complement. We study properties of this discriminant, exploiting its connection with the Hurwitz form of a reciprocal linear space.

Abstract:In recent years, several families of scattered polynomials have been investigated in the literature. However, most of them only exist in odd characteristic. In [B. Csajbók, G. Marino and F. Zullo: New maximum scattered linear sets of the projective line, Finite Fields Appl. 54 (2018), 133-150; G. Marino, M. Montanucci and F. Zullo: MRD-codes arising from the trinomial $x^q+x^{q^3}+cx^{q^5}\in\mathbb{F}_{q^6}[x]$, Linear Algebra Appl. 591 (2020), 99-114], the authors proved that the trinomial $f_c(X)=X^{q}+X^{q^{3}}+cX^{q^{5}}$ of $\mathbb{F}_{q^6}[X]$ is scattered under the assumptions that $q$ is odd and $c^2+c=1$. They also explicitly observed that this is false when $q$ is even. In this paper, we provide a different set of conditions on $c$ for which this trinomial is scattered in the case of even $q$. Using tools of algebraic geometry in positive characteristic, we show that when $q$ is even and sufficiently large, there are roughly $q^3$ elements $c \in \mathbb{F}_{q^6}$ such that $f_{c}(X)$ is scattered. Also, we prove that the corresponding MRD-codes and $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear sets of $\mathrm{PG}(1,q^6)$ are not equivalent to the previously known ones.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{N} \neq \{0\}$ be a fixed set of integers, closed under multiplication, closed under negation, or containing $\{\pm 1\}$. We prove that any zero of a polynomial in $\mathbf{Z}[X]$ whose coefficients lie in $\mathcal{N}$ can be approximated in $\mathbf{C}$ to arbitrary precision by a zero of a polynomial in $\mathbf{Z}[X]$ with square discriminant whose coefficients also lie in $\mathcal{N}$. Hence the topology of the closure in $\mathbf{C}$ of the set of zeros of all such polynomials is insensitive to the discriminant being a square, in contrast to the Galois groups of the polynomials.
