Abstract:The AlOOH core/shell microspheres were successfully synthesized via a one-step template-free hydrothermal route. By simply changing the ratio of alcohol to water, core/shell microspheres constructed with nanoplatelets and their curling structures could be selectively synthesized. A series of controlled experiments have also been carried out to better understand the formation mechanism of AlOOH spheres and the function of reactants used in the experiments. The formation of core/shell structures may involve aggregation of amorphous building clusters into spheres and their subsequent reaction, dissolution, and re-deposition process. The morphology, structure, and composition of the spheres are investigated using field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The specific surface area and pore-size distribution of the obtained product as determined by gas-sorption measurements show that the boehmite core–shell microspheres exhibit high Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area and porosity properties. The as-prepared AlOOH core–shell superstructures are powerful in the removal of Congo red pollutant from waste water.
Synthesis of Nano-Alumina Hydroxide Sol Using Sol-gel Method

Abstract:The preparation process of nano-aluminum hydroxide sol by peptizing aluminum hydroxide precipitate produced via carbonation of sodium aluminate was investigated. The reaction, in which the sodium aluminate solution was dropwise added into abundant sodium bicarbonate solution, was analyzed. The XRD results indicated that the amorphous aluminum hydroxide precipitates transformed into pseudo-boehmite because the precipitates dissolved and recrystallized into pseudo-boehmite crystals during the sol preparation. Furthermore, the increase of absorption at 270 run in the UV spectra indicated the presence of Al(OH)(6)(3-) ion during the sodium aluminate solution with caustic ratio of 1.7 was neutralized to 1.3. Comparing with the absorption spectrum of the structure of six hydroxyl groups around Al atom, it could be concluded that the coordination numbers of Al atom with hydroxyl groups changed from four to six during the decomposition of sodium aluminate solution. Besides, the morphology of particles in the sol was also influenced by surfactants and acids used.

Abstract:Novel aloe-like tin bisulfide (SnS 2 ) nanostructures were successfully synthesized via a thioglycolic acid (TGA) assisted hydrothermal process. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) were used to characterize the product. XRD pattern reveals that the product is well-crystallized SnS 2 with hexagonal structure. TEM and FESEM images clearly show an aloe-like nanostructure that is made from several single crystalline leaves. Furthermore, the possible growth mechanism is discussed.

Abstract:The heterogeneous photocatalysis technique to treat dye effluents demands micrometer-sized titania aggregates with one-dimensional nanostructures, which possess high photocatalytic activity and at the same time facilitate the catalyst-recovery from a slurry system. In this study, the solution remained after interactions between metallic Ti and hydrogen peroxide was subjected to an alkaline hydrothermal treatment. Microspheres with extremely uniform sizes of ca. 2 μm in diameter were achieved after a subsequent proton exchange followed by calcination in air. The microspheres were urchin-like aggregates of radially assembled nanowires, which consisted of chain-like anatase single crystallites with an average diameter of 20-25 nm. The homogeneous microspheres calcinated at 600°C possessed a surface area of 45.4m(2)/g and exhibited an excellent activity to assist photodegradation of rhodamine B in water, which is significantly higher than that of P25 titania nanoparticles. Because of the much easier recovery of the photocatalyst, the homogeneous microspheres synthesized herein may find practical applications in efficient photocatalytic treatments of dye effluents.

Abstract:Pure alpha-LiAlO2 nanosheets have been successfully prepared by a simple hydrothermal route Without adding any surfactants. The morphology of LiAlO2 nanosheets was controllable by adjusting file hydrothermal temperature. Hexagonal and rhombus lithium aluminate nanosheets have been obtained at different hydrothermal temperatures of 150 degrees C and 190 degrees C, respectively. The structure and morphology of the products were characterised by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The synthesis procedure provided a simple method to prepare lithium aluminate with high purity. The Formation mechanism of the nanostructural lithium aluminate was proposed.

Abstract:Well-dispersed ammonium aluminum carbonate hydroxide (NH4-Dw) and gamma-AlOOH nanostructures with controlled morphologies have been synthesized by employing an ionic-liquid-assisted hydrothermal process. The basic strategies that were used in this work were: 1) A controllable phase transition from NH4-Dw to gamma-AlOOH could be realized by increasing the reaction temperature and 2) the morphological evolution of NH4-Dw and gamma-AlOOH nanostructures could be influenced by the concentration of the ionic liquid. Based on these experimental results, the main objective of this work was to clarify the effect models of the ionic liquids on the synthesis of NH4-Dw and gamma-AlOOH nanostructures, which could be divided into cationic- or anionic-dominant effect models, as determined by the different surface structures of the targets. Specifically, under the cationic-dominant regime, the ionic liquids mainly showed dispersion effects for the NH4-Dw nanostructures, whereas the anionic-dominant model could induce the self-assembly of the gamma-AlOOH particles to form hierarchical structures. Under the guidance of the proposed models, the effect of the ionic liquids would be optimized by an appropriate choice of cations or anions, as well as by considering the different effect models with the substrate surface. We expect that such effect models between ionic liquids and the target products will be helpful for understanding and designing rational ionic liquids that contain specific functional groups, thus open up new opportunities for the synthesis of inorganic nanomaterials with new morphologies and improved properties. In addition, these as-prepared NH4-Dw and gamma-AlOOH nanostructures were converted into porous gamma-Al2O3 nanostructures by thermal decomposition, whilst preserving the same morphology. By using HRTEM and nitrogen-adsorption analysis, the obtained gamma-Al2O3 samples were found to have excellent porous properties and, hence, may have applications in catalysis and adsorption.

Abstract:The conditions for hydrothermal synthesis of mesoporous molecular sieve MCM-41 have been studied in gel M2O (M=Li, Na, K)-Al2O3-SiO2-CTMAB-H2O system. Experiments indicated that KOH showed better performance to replace NaOH as an inorganic alkali to synthesize molecular sieve MCM-41. As synthesized samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, TG and N2 adsorption isothermals.

Abstract:Inorganic nanoparticles with controlled size and shape are technologically important due to the strong correlation between these parameters and magnetic, electrical, and catalytic properties. Herein we demonstrated that under appropriate conditions, rodlike α-FeOOH (goethite) and porous fusiform α-Fe2O3 (hematite) uniform nanocrystallines could be selectively synthesized in large quantities via a facile surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) assisted hydrothermal synthetic route. The morphology and structure of the final products were investigated in detail by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). The probable formation mechanism of the α-FeOOH and α-Fe2O3 uniform nanoparticles was discussed on the basis of the experimental results.
Multinuclear solid-state NMR studies on the formation mechanism of aluminophosphate molecular sieves in ionic liquids

Abstract:In the present work, multinuclear solid-state NMR techniques together with power X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were employed to monitor the crystallization process of aluminophosphate AlPO4-11 molecular sieves in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([emim]Br) ionic liquids (LLs). The local environments of the selected solid samples were probed by one-dimensional Al-27, P-31, and F-19 MAS NMR experiments, and more information was obtained from two-dimensional Al-27 -> P-31 heteronuclear correlation (HETCOR) and Al-27 triple-quantum MAS (3QMAS) experiments. It is found that a large amount of amorphous aluminophosphates was formed with the F-Al-oct-O-P-par and Al-tet-O-P-par structures in the initial stage of aging. With increasing crystallization time, the partially condensed framework phosphorus species disappeared gradually and became fully condensed. Meanwhile, the octahedral Al was transformed into the pentahedra] and tetrahedral Al species with the structures of F-Al-penta-O-P-ful and Al-tet-O-P-ful in the AlPO4-11 frameworks. During the crystallization process, [emim] cations acting as the structure-directing agents were occluded into the channels, and F- anions were connected with pentahedral Al in the final AlPO4-11 phase. All of these findings can allow proposing a possible formation mechanism for the synthesis of AlPO4-11 in ionic liquids.

Abstract:Preparation of aluminosilicate ferrierite (FER) zeolite nanosheets with controllable thickness in the presence of a sole organic ammonium is attractive, but still challenging. In this report, with the employment of N,N-diethyl-cis-2,6-dimethylpiperidinium (DMP) as both a structure directing agent and crystal growth inhibitor, aluminosilicate FER zeolite nanosheets, with a variety of crystal thicknesses, ranging from 6 to 200 nm, are successfully synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Very interestingly, the amount of DMP in the starting gel is the key factor for crystal thickness control of aluminosilicate FER zeolite nanosheets. The obtained FER products, with different thicknesses, are well characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), N-2 sorption, thermogravimetric analysis (TG), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), and magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) techniques. This simple strategy might provide a novel avenue for the synthesis of other zeolite nanosheets with controllable thickness.
Preparation of arsenical-natroalunite solid solutions with high crystallinity by hydrothermal method

Abstract:Abstract The substitution of AsO4-for-SO4 in natroalunite has been investigated as a potentially eco-friendly method for arsenic immobilization/stabilization. The maximum amount and the best filterability of the arsenic-free natroalunite can be gained at the condition of pH 3.00 and 200°C for 3 h. Then the arsenic was introduced into the structure of natroalunite to prepare the arsenical-natroalunite under the preferred conditions. For arsenic concentration ≤ 3500 mg/L, the pure phase of arsenical-natroalunite solid solution could be synthesized, and the maximum arsenate substitution observed in the natroalunite structure was ∼11% molar. For arsenic concentration = 4200 mg/L, the spheroidal amorphous aluminum arsenate phases were formed. Additionally, leaching tests demonstrated that the arsenic solubility of arsenical natroalunite remained stabilized at 0.1 to 0.8 mg/L in 20 weeks at pH 4–9. However, amorphous aluminum arsenate phases were not appropriate for long-term storage under the same conditions with arsenic concentration between 3 to 6.8 mg/L.

Abstract:Lithium mobate crystal was successfully synthesized via hydrothermal synthesis method using LiOH center dot H2O or LiNO3 and Nb2O5 as starting materials in water or ammonia solution. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the as-prepared samples. The synthesis conditions such as crystallization temperature and time as well as ammonia concentration (when using LiNO3 as Li source) were investigated. The results demonstrate that the crystallization and purity of the as-prepared samples were increased with the increase of time when temperature was at 260 degrees C. When using LiNO3 as Li source a basic solution was necessary to synthesize LiNbO3. In the present work ammonia solution was used instead of water to obtain alkalescence solvent. XRD results revealed that the as-prepared samples had a hexagonal structure. FT-IR results displayed that the LiNbO3 phase could be completely formed and no secondary phase was found under proper conditions. SEM picture showed that the morphology of the sample was more perfect and bigger with increasing reaction time. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The crystal growth morphology depends not only on the internal structure of crystals, but also on the external environment.Through the ways of controlling temperature,and pH, adding multi-component additive,the growth habits of AlOOH in hydrothermal crystallization process have been analyzed in detail.By using advanced high-resolution scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy,and X-ray diffraction instrument,the morphology,crystal structure and other properties were determined and analyzed.After the hydrothermal process, the shape and quantitative elementary composition of the particle surface were analyzed with the energy spectrometer attached to the scanning electronic microscopy.Through the analysis of a large number of experimental data,the growth habits of AlOOH in different environment are revealed, the different temperature and pH conditions for getting different shapes of crystal,such as needlelike,sheet like,bulk and ellipsoidal,were also explored.Combined with the crystal theory,the nucleation mechanism of nano-AlOOH crystal was studied.

Abstract:The boehmite (Al2O3·H2O) hierarchical nanostructure with spindle‐like morphology has been successfully synthesized via ionic liquid‐assisted hydrothermal synthetic method under mild condition using an ionic liquid 1‐butyl‐3‐dimethylimidazolium bromide ([Bmim][Br]) as a template. The proposed formation mechanism has been investigated and the hydrogen bond‐co‐π–π stack mechanism is used to be responsible for the present formation of the precursor hierarchical nanostructure. The γ‐Al2O3 hierarchical nanostructure was obtained by calcining the as‐synthesized precursor at 500 °C for 2 h, preserving the same morphology. (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Abstract:Lithium aluminate (alpha-LiAlO2) nanobelts with the length of 1-2 gm and the thickness of about 25 nm, have been successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method with template assisted. The structure and morphology of the as-prepared products are characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Each nanobelt is single crystal structure, and many mesopores are discovered on the surface of the nanobelts. Nitrogen sorption measurements reveal that obtained products exhibited high BET specific surface area up to 224 m(2)/g and pore volume of 0.72 cm(3)/g. The growth mechanism of the nanobelts; is proposed and the influence of pH value on the morphology is discussed. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We report a facile water-assisted crystallization process for the conversion of amorphous sol-gel derived TiO2 into mesoporous anatase nanostructures with a high surface area and well-controlled porosity and crystallinity. As an alternative to conventional calcination methods, this approach works under very mild conditions and is therefore much desired for broad biological, environmental and catalytic applications.
Controlled Hydrothermal Precipitation of Alunite and Natroalunite in High-Aluminum Vanadium-Bearing Aqueous System

Abstract:During the acid leaching process of black shale, with the destruction of the aluminosilicate mineral structure, a large amount of aluminum (Al) is leached, accompanied by the release of vanadium (V). To separate aluminum from the vanadium-containing solution, the precipitation behavior of aluminum ions (Al3+) was investigated under hydrothermal conditions with the formation of alunite and natroalunite. In the solution environment, alunite and natroalunite are able to form stably by the Al3+ hydrolysis precipitation process at a temperature of 200 °C, a pH value of 0.4 and a reaction time of 5 h. When Al3+ was precipitated at a K/Al molar ratio of 1, the aluminum precipitation efficiency and the vanadium precipitation efficiency were 64.77% and 1.72%, respectively. However, when Al3+ was precipitated at a Na/Al molar ratio of 1, the precipitation efficiency of the aluminum decreased to 48.71% and the vanadium precipitation efficiency increased to 4.36%. The thermodynamics and kinetics results showed that alunite forms more easily than natroalunite, and the reaction rate increases with increasing temperature, and the precipitation is controlled by the chemical reaction. Vanadium loss increases as the pH value increases. It can be deduced that the ion state of tetravalent vanadium (VO2+) was transformed into the ion state of pentavalent vanadium (VO2+) in the hydrothermal environment. The VO2+ can be adsorbed on the alunite or natroalunite as a result of their negative surface charges, ultimately leading to vanadium loss.

Abstract:The alpha-Fe2O3 with various morphologies has been successfully synthesized via an ionic liquid-assisted hydrothermal synthetic method. The samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The results indicate that the as-prepared samples are alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticles, mesoporous hollow microspheres, microcubes, and porous nanorods. The effects of the ionic liquid 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([bmim][Cl]) on the formation of the alpha-Fe2O3 with various morphologies have been investigated systematically, The proposed formation mechanisms have also been investigated on the basis of a series of FE-SEM studies of the products obtained at different durations. Because of the unique porous structure, the potential application in water treatment of the alpha-Fe2O3 porous nanorods was investigated. The UV-vis measurements suggest that the as-synthesized pure alpha-Fe2O3 with various morphologies possess different optical properties depending on the shape and size of the samples. The magnetic hysteresis measurements indicate the interesting magnetic property evolution in the as-prepared alpha-Fe2O3 samples, which is attributed to the superstructure or the shape anisotropy of the samples. This method is expected to be a useful technique for controlling the diverse shapes of crystalline inorganic materials for a variety of applications, such as sensors, gas and heavy metal ion adsorbents, catalytic fields, hydrogen and Li ion storage, and controlled drug delivery, etc.

Abstract:This report introduces a novel method of separating potassium from sodium by synthesizing K-alunite using activated aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)3). A two-step operation, consisting of the mechanochemical activation of Al(OH)3 and subsequent hydrothermal processing at a low temperature of 80°C with Al2(SO4)3 · 18H2O and K2SO4 or Na2SO4, was conducted. K-alunite but not Na-alunite at this low temperature was successfully formed, leading to the possible separation of potassium sulfate from sodium sulfate more easily. The process may serve the purpose of recovering potassium from some aqueous alkali sources for providing potash fertilizer in agricultural application.

Abstract:The aluminum oxy-hydroxide (AlOOH) nanorod and nanotube array are synthesized by hydrothermal treatment of the anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes. This method might be a simple and efficient approach for fabrication of AlOOH nano-materials with controlled morphology. A possible mechanism on the hydrothermal growth is proposed and validated by the experimental results. The obtained AlOOH nanorod and nanotube arrays are anticipated to improve their performances as catalysts and absorbents and broaden their applications in the fields of biology and nanotechnology.
