Abstract:A frequently cited theorem says that for n > 0 and prime p, the sum of the first p n-th powers is congruent to -1 modulo p if p-1 divides n, and to 0 otherwise. We survey the main ingredients in several known proofs. Then we give an elementary proof, using an identity for power sums proven by Pascal in 1654. An application is a simple proof of a congruence for certain sums of binomial coefficients, due to Hermite and Bachmann.

Abstract:Let k be a positive integer and p be a prime.We give some congruences involving the binomial coefficients((k+1)p-a)p-a),(kp-1p-a) with 1 ≤ a ≤ p-1 and （kp+p-1/2b±p-1/2±b),(kp-1p-1/2±b) with 0 ≤ b ≤ p-1/2.In particular,we get a generalization of Morley's congruence.Meanwhile,some congruences about the summation of ((k+1)p-ap-a) are obtained.

Abstract:We provide a probabilistic approach using renewal theory to derive some novel identities involving Eulerian numbers and uniform B-splines. The renewal perspective leads to a unified treatment for the normalized binomial coefficients and the normalized Eulerian numbers when studying their limits of sums, as well as their associated distributions — the binomial distributions (Bernstein polynomials) and the Irwin–Hall distributions (uniform B-splines). We further extend the probabilistic perspective to <math>h</math>-Bernstein polynomials (Pólya–Eggenberger distributions) through conditional renewal processes, and derive new limits of various ways of summing for the two special numbers and associated distributions. The proposed probabilistic unification dramatically simplifies the proofs of some identities, which are far from obvious (such as for <math>h</math>-Bernstein polynomials) or do not otherwise even appear promising (such as for Eulerian numbers).

Abstract:Making use of a telescoping approach, three types of sums of binomial quotients are examined. The summation terms of the two types of alternating sums have symmetry (i.e., their numerators and denominators are completely symmetric). We obtained a series of their explicit sums. Furthermore, by means of binomial relations, three recurrence relations of the sums are derived. In addition, series of double summation formulae involving binomial quotients are established.

Abstract:We prove two multivariate -binomial identities conjectured by Bousseau, Brini and van Garrel [Geom. Topol. 28 (2024), 393-496, arXiv:2011.08830] which give generating series for Gromov-Witten invariants of two specific log Calabi-Yau surfaces. The key identity in all the proofs is Jackson's -analogue of the Pfaff-Saalschütz summation formula from the theory of basic hypergeometric series.

For any $1<n\le 85/4$, we obtain the following fast converging series for $\log n$: $$\begin{aligned}&\sum_{k=0}^\infty\frac{(2(n^2+6n+1)^2k+n^4+30n^2+1)(n-1)^{4k}}{(4k+1)(-n)^k(n+1)^{2k}\binom{4k}{2k}}\\&\qquad=8n(n+1)^2-2n(n^2-1)\log n.\end{aligned}$$ We also prove that $$\sum_{k=0}^\infty\frac{153965k^2-96459k+22786}{(-8)^k\binom{4k}k}=\frac{64}5(1634-45\log2).$$ In addition, we pose many new conjectural series identities involving binomial coefficients; for example, we conjecture that $$\sum_{k=1}^\infty\frac{\binom{2k}k^3}{4096^k}\bigg(9(42k+5)\sum_{j=0}^{k-1}\frac1{(2j+1)^4}+\frac{25}{(2k+1)^3}\bigg)=\frac 56\pi^3.$$

Abstract:Using general identities for difference operators, as well as a technique of symbolic computation and tools from probability theory, we derive very general kth order (k \ge 2) convolution identities for Bernoulli and Euler polynomials. This is achieved by use of an elementary result on uniformly distributed random variables. These identities depend on k positive real parameters, and as special cases we obtain numerous known and new identities for these polynomials. In particular we show that the well-known identities of Miki and Matiyasevich for Bernoulli numbers are special cases of the same general formula.

Abstract:Let be a random variable whose moment generating function exists in a neighborhood of the origin. The aim of this paper is to study probabilistic Bernoulli polynomials of order associated with and probabilistic multi-poly-Bernoulli polynomials associated with . They are respectively probabilistic extensions of Bernoulli polynomials of order and multi-poly-Bernoulli polynomials. We find explicit expressions, certain related identities and some properties for them. In addition, we treat the special cases of Poisson, gamma and Bernoulli random variables.
