Abstract: A general analysis for the competition between breached pairing (BP) and LOFF pairing mechanisms in asymmetric fermion superfluids is presented in the frame of a four fermion interaction model. Two physical conditions which can induce mismatched Fermi surfaces are considered: (1) fixed chemical potential asymmetry $\delta\mu$ and (2) fixed fermion number asymmetry $\alpha$. In case (1), the BP state is ruled out because of Sarma instability and LOFF state is thermodynamically stable in a narrow window of $\delta\mu$. In case (2), while the Sarma instability can be avoided and both the BP and LOFF states can survive provided $\alpha$ is less than the corresponding critical value, the BP state suffers magnetic instability and the LOFF state is always thermodynamically stable. While the LOFF window in case (2) is much larger than the one in the conventional case (1), for small $\alpha$ the longitudinal superfluid density of the LOFF state is negative and it suffers also magnetic instability.
Superfluid Density Reduction and Spin-Imbalanced Pairing in a Fermionic Superfluid Due to Dynamical Boson Exchange

Abstract:We investigate superfluidity in nonrelativistic fermionic systems in which the pairing interaction includes a contribution from the exchange of a dynamical bosonic mode. We show that the dynamical boson exchange (DBE), which causes a retarded pairing interaction and thus violates the Galilean invariance of the fermion sector, generically leads to a quantum reduction of the superfluid density and hence a nonzero normal fraction even at zero temperature. For spin-singlet pairing, the DBE also leads to a nonvanishing spin susceptibility at zero temperature, providing a mechanism for the coexistence of pairing and magnetization. While these effects are negligible for weak pairing, they become sizable at strong pairing. For the double superfluidity in ultracold Fermi-Bose mixtures, the superfluid density reduction for the fermion sector induced by the DBE just gives rise to the Andreev-Bashkin drag effect, indicating a strong entrainment between the two superfluid components. The DBE may also provide a new source for the superfluid fraction reduction of neutron matter, which is crucial for models of neutron star glitches based on neutron superfluidity.

Abstract:We analyze the dynamical pairing susceptibility $\chi_{pp} (\omega_m)$ at $T=0$ in a quantum-critical metal, where superconductivity emerges out of a non-Fermi liquid ground state once the pairing interaction exceeds a certain threshold. We obtain $\chi_{pp} (\omega_m)$ as the ratio of the fully dressed dynamical pairing vertex $\Phi (\omega_m)$ and the bare $\Phi_0 (\omega_m)$ (both infinitesimally small). For superconductivity out of a Fermi liquid, the pairing susceptibility is positive above $T_c$, diverges at $T_c$, and becomes negative below it. For superconductivity out of a non-Fermi liquid, the behavior of $\chi_{pp} (\omega_m)$ is different in two aspects: (i) it diverges at the onset of pairing at $T=0$ only for a certain subclass of bare $\Phi_0 (\omega_m)$ and remains non-singular for other $\Phi_0 (\omega_m)$, and (ii) below the instability, it becomes a non-unique function of a continuous parameter $\phi$ for an arbitrary $\Phi_0 (\omega_m)$. The susceptibility is negative in some range of $\phi$ and diverges at the boundary of this range. We argue that this behavior of the susceptibility reflects a multi-critical nature of a superconducting transition in a quantum-critical metal when immediately below the instability an infinite number of superconducting states emerges simultaneously with different amplitudes of the order parameter down to an infinitesimally small one.

Abstract:In this work we numerically investigate the fate of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) pairing in the presence of quenched phase under Peierls substitution using time-dependent real space and momentum space Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation methods and Anderson pseudospin representation method. This kind of phase imprint can be realized by modulating electric field in ultracold atoms and illumining of THz optical pump pulse in solids with conventional and unconventional superconductors. In the case of weak phase imprint, the BCS pairing is stable, while in the strong phase imprint, instability towards finite-momentum pairing is allowed, in which the real space and momentum space methods yield different results. In the pulsed gauge potential, we find that this instability will not happen even with much stronger vector potential. We also show that the uniform and staggered gauge potentials yield different behaviors. While the staggered potential induces transition from the BCS pairing to the overdamped phase, the uniform gauge may enhance the pairing and will not induce to the overdamped phase. These results may shade light on the realization of finite momentum pairing, such as Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase with dynamical modulation.
Fermion Superfluidity with Retarded Pairing Interaction: Quantum Depletion of Superfluid Density and Spin-Imbalanced Pairing

Abstract:In this paper we present a very general theoretical framework for addressing fermionic superfluids over the entire range of BCS to Bose Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover in the presence of population imbalance or spin polarization. Our emphasis is on providing a theory which reduces to the standard zero temperature mean field theories in the literature, but necessarily inclu des pairing fluctuation effects at non-zero temperature within a consistent framework. Physically, these effects a re associated with the presence of pre-formed pairs (or a fermionic pseudogap) in the normal phase, and pair excitations of the condensate, in the superfluid phase. We show how this finite T theory of fermionic pair condensates bears many similarities to the condensation of point bosons. In the process we examine three different types of condensate: the usual breached pair or Sarma phase and both the one and two plane wave Larkin- Ovchinnikov, Fulde-Ferrell (LOFF) states. The last of these has been discussed in the literature albeit only within a Landau-Ginzburg formalism, generally valid near Tc. Here we show how to arrive at the two plane wave LOFF state in the ground state as well as at general temperature T.

Abstract:This paper addresses the transition from the normal to the superfluid statein strongly correlated two dimensional fermionic superconductors and Fermigases. We arrive at the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) temperatureT_BKT as a function of attractive pairing strength byassociating it with the onset of "quasi-condensation" in the normal phase. Ourapproach builds on a criterion for determining the BKT transition temperaturefor atomic gases which is based on a well established Quantum Monte Carloanalysis of the phase space density. This latter quantity, when derived fromBCS-BEC crossover theory for fermions, leads to non-monotonic behavior forT_BKT as a function of the attractive interaction or inversescattering length. In Fermi gases, this implies a robust superconducting domefollowed by a long tail from the flat BEC asymptote, rather similar to what isobserved experimentally. For lattice systems we find that T_BKT hasan absolute maximum of the order of 0.1 E_F. Pairing Versus Phase Coherence of Doped Holes in Distinct Quantum Spin Backgrounds

Abstract:We examine the pairing structure of holes injected into two distinct spin backgrounds: a short-range antiferromagnetic phase versus a symmetry protected topological phase. Based on density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulation, we find that although there is a strong binding between two holes in both phases, phase fluctuations can significantly influence the pair-pair correlation depending on the spin-spin correlation in the background. Here the phase fluctuation is identified as an intrinsic string operator nonlocally controlled by the spins. We show that while the pairing amplitude is generally large, the coherent Cooper pairing can be substantially weakened by the phase fluctuation in the symmetry-protected topological phase, in contrast to the short-range antiferromagnetic phase. It provides an example of a non-BCS mechanism for pairing, in which the paring phase coherence is determined by the underlying spin state self-consistently, bearing an interesting resemblance to the pseudogap physics in the cuprate.
Critical current throughout the BCS-BEC crossover with the inclusion of pairing fluctuations

Abstract:The present work aims at providing a systematic analysis of the current density versus momentum characteristics for a fermionic superfluid throughout the BCS-BEC crossover, even in the fully homogeneous case. At low temperatures, where pairing fluctuations are not strong enough to invalidate a quasi-particle approach, a sharp threshold for the inception of a back-flow current is found, which sets the onset of dissipation and identifies the critical momentum according to Landau. This momentum is seen to smoothly evolve from the BCS to the BEC regimes, whereby a single expression for the single-particle current density that includes pairing fluctuations enables us to incorporate on equal footing two quite distinct dissipative mechanisms, namely, pair-breaking and phonon excitations in the two sides of the BCS-BEC crossover, respectively. At finite temperature, where thermal fluctuations broaden the excitation spectrum and make the dissipative (kinetic and thermal) mechanisms intertwined with each other, an alternative criterion due to Bardeen is instead employed to signal the loss of superfluid behavior. In this way, detailed comparison with available experimental data in linear and annular geometries is significantly improved with respect to previous approaches, thereby demonstrating the crucial role played by quantum fluctuations in renormalizing the single-particle excitation spectrum.

Abstract:We present a pairing fluctuation theory which self-consistently incorporates finite momentum pair excitations in the context of BCS—Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover, and we apply this theory to high T c superconductors and ultracold Fermi gases. There are strong similarities between Fermi gases in the unitary regime and high T c superconductors. Here, we address key issues of common interest, especially the pseudogap. In the Fermi gases, we summarize recent experiments including various phase diagrams (with and without population imbalance), as well as evidence for a pseudogap in thermodynamic and other experiments.

Abstract:We address the thermodynamics, density profiles and superfluid density of trapped fermions undergoing BCS-BEC crossover, with and without population imbalance. Our approach represents a fully consistent treatment of "pseudogap effects", which reflect the distinction between the pair formation temperature $T^*$ and the pair condensation temperature $T_c$ and must be accommodated by modifying the fermionic excitation spectrum. This distinction has been omitted from all other many body approaches in the literature. We show how enforcing this corollary implies that pairing fluctuation contributions enter into both the gap and the number equations; this is necessary in order to be consistent with a generalized Ward identity. Furthermore, we demonstrate that we obtain physical results for the superfluid density $n_s(T)$ at all $T$. In contrast, previous work in the literature has led to ill-behaved $n_s(T)$. The superfluid density is a critical measure of the physicality of a given crossover theory. In order to properly address thermodynamic properties of a trapped Fermi gas, it is necessary to demonstrate that the particle density profiles are consistent with experiment. The lack of demonstrable consistency between theoretical and experimental density profiles, along with problematic behavior found for $n_s(T)$, casts doubt on previous claims in the literature concerning quantitative agreement between thermodynamical calculations and experiment.
Unusual Zeeman-field Effects in Two-Dimensional Spin-Orbit-coupled Fermi Superfluids

Abstract:We investigate the Zeeman field effects on the bulk superfluid properties and the collective modes in two-dimensional (2D) attractive atomic Fermi gases with Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling. In the presence of a large spin-orbit coupling, the system undergoes a quantum phase transition to a topological superfluid state at a critical Zeeman field. We show that the nonanalyticities of the thermodynamic functions as well as other physical quantities at the quantum phase transition originate from the infrared singularities caused by the gapless fermionic spectrum. The same argument applies also to the BCS-BEC evolution in 2D fermionic superfluids with p- or d-wave pairing. The superfluid density n(s) and the velocity of the Goldstone sound mode c(s) behave oppositely in the normal and the topological superfluid phases: they are suppressed by the Zeeman field in the normal superfluid phase, but get enhanced in the topological superfluid phase. The velocity of the Goldstone sound mode also shows nonanalyticity at the quantum phase transition. For large Zeeman field, we find n(s) -> n and c(s) -> upsilon(F), where n is the total fermion density and upsilon(F) is the Fermi velocity of noninteracting system. The unusual behavior of the superfluid density and the collective modes can be understood by the fact that the spin-orbit-coupled superfluid state at large Zeeman field can be mapped to the p(x) + ip(y) superfluid state of spinless fermions.
