Abstract:A general analysis of Meissner effect and spin susceptibility of a uniform superconductor in an asymmetric two-component fermion system is presented in nonrelativistic field theory approach. We found that the pairing mechanism dominates the magnetization property of superconductivity and the asymmetry enhances the paramagnetism of the system. At the turning point from BCS to breached pairing superconductivity, the Meissner mass squared and spin susceptibility are divergent at zero temperature. In the breached pairing state induced by chemical potential difference and mass difference between the two kinds of fermions, the system goes from paramagnetism to diamagnetism, when the mass ratio of the two species increases.

Abstract: Recently published paper [PRL 114, 147701 (2015)] contains several misleading statements and misinterpretations of known facts. The main massage of the paper [PRL 114, 147701 (2015)] is as follows: "We have shown that explicit symmetry breaking in the structural configuration of charges leads to symmetry breaking of the electric field which results in electromagnetic radiation due to non-conservative current within a localized region of space and time" seems to transcend mere empiricism, touching the theoretical foundations of electromagnetism. Moreover, basic mistakes are numerous in this article and its main claim is wrong. Below we prove it citing the paper and arguing against it.

Abstract:The original paper describes neutrino cooling calculations in the presence of asymmetric neutrino opacities due to parity violation in strong magnetic fields. In early April, through the work of P. Arras and D. Lai at Cornell (see <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="astro-ph/9806285" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/9806285">astro-ph/9806285</a>) we became aware that the paper contains a serious flaw: although the neutrino scattering opacities depend asymmetrically on the initial and final neutrino momenta, detailed balance requires that there be no cumulative effect from multiple scatterings in the bulk interior of the proto-neutron star where local thermodynamic equilibrium applies to a good approximation. This paper was therefore withdrawn from ApJ in April. Also in April, we submitted an erratum to ApJ Lett. pointing out this error. (The erratum will appear in the July 1, 1998 issue of ApJ Lett.)

Abstract:Pairing symmetry is important to indentify the pairing mechanism. The analysis becomes particularly timely and important for the newly discovered iron-based multi-orbital superconductors. From the group theory point of view we classified all pairing matrices (in the orbital space) that carry irreducible representations of the system. The quasiparticle gap falls into three categories: full, nodal and gapless. The nodal-gap states show conventional Volovik effect even for on-site pairing. The gapless states are odd in the orbital space, have a negative superfluid density and are therefore unstable. In connection to experiments we proposed possible pairing states and implications for the pairing mechanism. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2009
New paradigm for a disordered superconductor in a magnetic field

Abstract:We show that while orbital magnetic field and disorder, acting individually weaken superconductivity, acting together they produce an intriguing evolution of a two-dimensional type-II s-wave superconductor. For weak disorder, the critical field H_c at which the superfluid density collapses is coincident with the field at which the superconducting energy gap gets suppressed. However, with increasing disorder these two fields diverge from each other creating a pseudogap region. The nature of vortices also transform from Abrikosov vortices with a metallic core for weak disorder to Josephson vortices with gapped and insulating cores for higher disorder. Our results naturally explain two outstanding puzzles: (1) the gigantic magnetoresistance peak observed as a function of magnetic field in thin disordered superconducting films; and (2) the disappearance of the celebrated zero-bias Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon peak in disordered superconductors.

Abstract:We discuss the possibility of coexistence of d-wave superconductivity and ferromagnetism in a two-dimensional model on the assumption that the same electrons are responsible for both the pairing order and the ferromagnetic order. The calculated results indicate that the coexistence is difficult to be realized in a uniform system.
Mismatch Induced Type Transition of a Superconductor

Abstract:The formation of Cooper pairs with non-zero net mo- mentum is expected to occur in fermionic systems due to the presence of attractive interactions that are responsi- ble for the separation of the Fermi surfaces of the pair- ing electrons. The study of inhomogeneous supercon- ductors has been the subject of intense theoretical and experimental research recently. In an electronic super- conductor, the displacement of the Fermi momenta can be caused by either the application of a strong external magnetic field or the presence of ferromagnetic impuri- ties. In cold fermionic atoms, the mismatch of the Fermi sea occurs because the effective masses or densities of the two species do not match. Finally as we squeeze matter creating conditions that exist in the interior of compact stars, differences in the chemical potentials of different quark flavors might lead to displacements of their Fermi momenta since this configuration is energetically favor- able ( charge neutrality ). The mismatch of the Fermi momenta is expected to reduce the available phase space for pairing. We shall denote the difference of the kinetic energy of the pairing fermions with δ, and we shall characterize the strength of the pairing force in a superconductor with the magni- tude of the energy gap �0, at zero temperature T = 0 and zero mismatch. The long range order will be destroyed for sufficiently high values of the ratioδ/�0. But prior to this a new type of long range order is expected to emerge for δ ∼ �0. The candidate pairing states that have been proposed in the literature include the long sorted LOFF pairing state (1), the breached pairing state for cold atoms (2), the Sarma state for a charge neutral quark matter (3) or a heterogeneous separation between BCS phase and the normal phase (4) for the quark mat- ter. Figure 1 shows the possible phase diagram of an elec- tronic superconductor with Fermi momentum mismatch. The LOFF phase is expected to emerge within a narrow window of the mismatch parameter beyond the line join- ing δLOFF ≃ 0.608�0 at the transition temperature and δ' LOFF ≃ �0/ √ 2 at t = 0 (5). In this letter we shall demonstrate a dramatic change of the magnetic properties of a superconductor that oc- curs before the emergence of the exotic pairing states. More specifically, a type I superconductor without mis- match can evolve to a type II one beyond a critical value of the ratio δ/�0 when sufficiently close to the transi- tion temperature. This possible crossover, sketched in the phase diagram Fig.1 by the dashed line, may have observable consequences. Our results seem to contradict the conventional belief that a type II superconductor is associated to a stronger pairing force.

Abstract:A general analysis of fermion pairing at finite temperature and density between different species with mismatched Fermi surfaces is presented. Very different from the temperature effect of the BCS phase, the recently found breached pairing phase resulted from the density difference of the two species lying in a region with calabashlike shape in the T-mu plane, and the most probable temperature for the new phase's creation is finite but not zero.

Effective Hamiltonian of Magnetic Moments in Proximity with an S-Wave Superconductor

Abstract:In this paper, we consider two magnetic moments in proximity with an s-wave superconductor, where each magnetic moment has an internal energy level. The effective Hamiltonian of the two magnetic moments is derived in this paper by the method of path integral in the weak coupling limit. Interestingly, there are four new terms by the proximity effect, including the Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya–Yosida interaction, the hopping term, the cross and on-site superconducting pairing potentials. Additionally, since the parity of electrons is conserved, the Hilbert space is split into two subspaces of even and odd parities, respectively. We also investigate the consequences of the effective Hamiltonian in the Coulomb blockade regime by varying the distance between the two magnetic moments. We found that a quantum phase transition happens whenever there is a level crossing for the ground states. The degeneracy of the ground states is also changed after the quantum phase transition, and the electron occupations for the magnetic moments with both singlet and triplet states are discontinuous at the level crossing, since the electronic states are always entangled with the spin states of the two magnetic moments.

Abstract:We investigate the origin of Abelian and non-Abelian type magnetic instabilities induced by the Fermi surface mismatch between the two pairing fermions in a nonrelativistic model. The Abelian type instability occurs only in a gapless state and the Meissner mass squared becomes divergent at the gapless-gapped transition point, while the non-Abelian type instability happens in both gapless and gapped states and the divergence vanishes. The non-Abelian type instability can be cured in a strong coupling region.

Abstract:Superconductivity and magnetism are adversarial states of matter. The presence of spontaneous magnetic fields inside the superconducting state is, therefore, an intriguing phenomenon prompting extensive experimental and theoretical research. In this review, we discuss recent experimental discoveries of unconventional superconductors which spontaneously break time-reversal symmetry and theoretical efforts in understanding their properties. We discuss the main experimental probes and give an extensive account of theoretical approaches to understand the order parameter symmetries and the corresponding pairing mechanisms, including the importance of multiple bands.

Fate of Magnetic Impurity Induced States in a Non-Hermitian S-Wave Superconductor

Abstract:Recently, the non-Hermitian system has attracted great attention. However, the interplay between the nonHermiticity and impurities in superconductors remains to be explored. In this work, we investigate the magnetic impurity chain on a three-dimensional non-Hermitian s-wave superconductor with the imbalanced pairing term. For the Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR)-type state, we find that their fate is determined by the generalized in-gap nature of these states: These in-gap states and related topological phases survive only when the effective superconducting gap exists. With the increasing strength of the non-Hermitian part of the pairing term, the host superconductor is lead to a non-Hermitian gapless phase with exceptional surfaces, while these in-gap states and topological phases disappear. Our work generalizes the in-gap state nature of the YSR state to the non-Hermitian superconductor and reveals the relation between the exceptional surfaces and the YSR-type state, which provides a minimal starting point to explore the interplay between the non-Hermiticity and magnetic impurities in the s-wave superconductor.

Abstract:In a recent Letter [PRL 103, 186402 (2009)], the energy band structure of Fe-As-based superconductors is fitted with a tight-binding model with two Fe ions per unit cell and two degenerate xz and yz orbitals per Fe ion. The author claims that the proposed model, which differs markedly from a model previously used by other authors for the same two orbitals in the same compounds, possesses the symmetry required to describe the Fe-As planes in iron-pnictide superconductors. In this comment we argue that this is not the case.

Abstract:The determination of the pairing symmetry is one of the most crucial issues for the iron-based superconductors, for which various scenarios are discussed controversially. Non-magnetic impurity substitution is one of the most promising approaches to address the issue, because the pair-breaking mechanism from the non-magnetic impurities should be different for various models. Previous substitution experiments demonstrated that the non-magnetic zinc can suppress the superconductivity of various iron-based superconductors. Here we demonstrate the local destruction of superconductivity by non-magnetic zinc impurities in Ba 0.5 K 0.5 Fe 2 As 2 by exploring phase-slip phenomena in a mesoscopic structure with 119 × 102 nm 2 cross-section. The impurities suppress superconductivity in a three-dimensional ‘Swiss cheese’-like pattern with in-plane and out-of-plane characteristic lengths slightly below ∼1.34 nm. This causes the superconducting order parameter to vary along abundant narrow channels with effective cross-section of a few square nanometres. The local destruction of superconductivity can be related to Cooper pair breaking by non-magnetic impurities.

Abstract:In non-centrosymmetric superconductors the pair potential has both even-parity singlet and odd-parity triplet components. If time-reversal symmetry is broken, the superconducting phase of these components is not the same, for example in anapole superconductors. In this paper it is shown that breaking time-reversal symmetry by a phase difference between the two components significantly alters both the density of states and the conductance in s+helical p-wave superconductors. The density of states and conductance in s+chiral p-wave superconductors are less influenced by adding a phase difference because time reversal symmetry is already broken in the s+p-wave superconductor. The Tanaka-Nazarov boundary conditions are extended to 3D superconductors, allowing to investigate a greater variety of superconductors, such as B-W superconductors, in which the direction of the d-vector is parallel to the direction of momentum. The results are important for the determination of pair potentials in potentially time-reversal symmetry broken non-centrosymmetric superconductors.
