Abstract:This essay's title is justified by discussing a class of Yang-Mills-type theories of which standard Yang-Mills theories are special cases but which is broad enough to include gravity as a double field theory. We use the framework of homotopy algebras, where conventional Yang-Mills theory is the tensor product ${\cal K}\otimes \frak{g}$ of a `kinematic' algebra ${\cal K}$ with a color Lie algebra $\frak{g}$. The larger class of Yang-Mills-type theories are given by the tensor product of ${\cal K}$ with more general Lie-type algebras of which ${\cal K}$ itself is an example, up to anomalies that can be cancelled for the tensor product with a second copy $\bar{\cal K}$. Gravity is then given by ${\cal K}\otimes \bar{\cal K}$.

Energy and equations of motion in a tentative theory of gravity with a privileged reference frame

Abstract:Based on a tentative interpretation of gravity as a pressure force, a scalar theory of gravity was previously investigated. It assumes gravitational contraction (dilation) of space (time) standards. In the static case, the same Newton law as in special relativity was expressed in terms of these distorted local standards, and was found to imply geodesic motion. Here, the formulation of motion is reexamined in the most general situation. A consistent Newton law can still be defined, which accounts for the time variation of the space metric, but it is not compatible with geodesic motion for a time-dependent field. The energy of a test particle is defined: it is constant in the static case. Starting from 'dust', a balance equation is then derived for the energy of matter. If the Newton law is assumed, the field equation of the theory allows to rewrite this as a true conservation equation, including the gravitational energy. The latter contains a Newtonian term, plus the square of the relative rate of the local velocity of gravitation waves (or that of light), the velocity being expressed in terms of absolute standards.

Abstract:We discuss the physical interpretation of the gravity mediated entanglement effect. We show how to read it in terms of quantum reference systems. We pinpoint the single gravitational degree of freedom mediating the entanglement. We clarify why the distinction between longitudinal and transverse degrees of freedom is irrelevant for the interpretation of the results. We discuss the relation between the LOCC theorem and the interpretation of the effect, its different relevance for, respectively, the quantum gravity and quantum information communities, and the reason for the excitement raised by the prospect of detection.

Abstract:We point out the idea that, at small scales, gravity can be described by the standard degrees of freedom of general relativity, plus a scalar particle and a degree of freedom of a new type: the fakeon. This possibility leads to fundamental implications in understanding gravitational force at quantum level as well as phenomenological consequences in the corresponding classical theory.

Abstract:A general paradigm for describing classical (and semiclassical) gravity is presented. This approach brings to the centre-stage a holographic relationship between the bulk and surface terms in a general class of action functionals and provides a deeper insight into several aspects of classical gravity which have no explanation in the conventional approach. After highlighting a series of unresolved issues in the conventional approach to gravity, I show that (i) principle of equivalence, (ii) general covariance and (iii)a reasonable condition on the variation of the action functional, suggest a generic Lagrangian for semiclassical gravity of the form $L=Q_a^{bcd}R^a_{bcd}$ with $\nabla_b Q_a^{bcd}=0$. The expansion of $Q_a^{bcd}$ in terms of the derivatives of the metric tensor determines the structure of the theory uniquely. The zeroth order term gives the Einstein-Hilbert action and the first order correction is given by the Gauss-Bonnet action. Any such Lagrangian can be decomposed into a surface and bulk terms which are related holographically. The equations of motion can be obtained purely from a surface term in the gravity sector. Hence the field equations are invariant under the transformation $T_{ab} \to T_{ab} + \lambda g_{ab}$ and gravity does not respond to the changes in the bulk vacuum energy density. The cosmological constant arises as an integration constant in this approach. The implications are discussed.

Abstract:Gravity is derived from an entropic action coupling matter fields with geometry. The fundamental idea is to relate the metric of Lorentzian spacetime to a density matrix. The matter fields curve spacetime, defining a metric induced by the matter fields. The entropic action is the quantum relative entropy between the metric of spacetime and the metric induced by the matter fields. The modified Einstein equations obtained reduce to the Einstein equations in the regime of low coupling. To simplify the theory, exclusively scalar matter fields are considered. This theoretical framework can be extended in different directions, for instance by including fermionic matter fields and gauge fields. A canonical quantization of this field theory could bring new insights into quantum gravity.

Abstract:It is known that the Electromagnetic field propagates as a transverse wave with a constant speed. The external manifestation of the Electromagnetic field is perfectly described by Maxwell's equations in 1864. In the Classical Theory of the Electromagnetic field, all the equations refer to motion or rotation at a constant speed. They obey one Classical Axiom which states that rotation of vector E with constant speed forms a closed circle. Motions or rotations with variable speed or with monotonically variable speed are not considered. This new type of non-uniform motions is considered by the Theory of new Axioms and Laws.This Theory is proposed by the author. The first new Axiom states that a rotation of a vector E with a monotonically varying speed forms an open circle or vortex. Vortices can be in a plane (2D) and are called transverse vortices, or in a volume (3D) and are called longitudinal vortices . Each of these two types can be accelerating or decelerating. Thus, the Theory of new Axioms and Laws describes 4 types of movements instead 1 type by the Classical field Theory. The full Theory of new Axioms and Laws includes 2 axioms and 8 laws. This article uses 2 Axiom and only 4 Laws. The previeus articles describe exactly this that the longitudinal accelerating and decelerating vortices create Gravitational waves. The reason is that longitudinal accelerating vortices are attracted and packed into accelerating Funnels. They suck transverse waves with acceleration from outside-in and simultaneously with rotational motion to the left (if the observer is looking against the movement). The central part of accelerating Funnel continues as longitudinal accelerating vortex that looks like the energy much more than the matter. Thus accelerating Funnels transform some of the transverse motion (vortices) into longitudinal or transform some of the matter into energy. Decelerating longitudinal vortices are packed into decelerating Funnels. They repel decelerating transverse vortices insideout and simultaneously with a rightward spin (if the observer is looking against the movement). Thus the decelerating Funnels transform longitudinal motion (vortex) into transverse, or part of the energy into matter. The observation shows that there is a huge Space distortion outside (around) and inside the Gravity Funnels. But analysis shows that the cause of this Space distortion is the presence of acceleration -positive or negative. Therefore the cause is the presence of acceleration but the result is the observation for a distortion of Space.

The first starts from a first order lagrangian formulation, the second from a hamiltonian formulation. In this note we show that they lead to identical results for the specific cases of pure gravity with or without a cosmological constant.

Abstract:We present new action principles for unimodular gravity, defined in the chiral Plebański formulation based on (complex) two-forms and a complex ${\rm SO}(3)$ connection. In these theories, just as in their analogues in the metric formulation, the cosmological constant does not take a prescribed value but is an integration constant whose value can differ between different (classical) solutions. We discuss some subtleties when identifying Lorentzian solutions in the generally complex theory, and show how these theories can be reduced to a ``pure connection'' form similar to Krasnov's pure connection formalism for general relativity.

Abstract:Thermodynamics of local causal horizons have been shown to encode the information necessary to derive the equations governing the gravitational dynamics. We have previously shown that, in the presence of matter, this derivation further implies quantum phenomenological corrections to gravitational dynamics. Herein, we study whether similar corrections also occur in vacuum. We show that, under the assumptions of locality and local Lorentz invariance of physics, the vacuum dynamics is prescribed by the Einstein equations. We also discuss an alternative paradigm which assumes the existence of a preferred direction of time (much like in Einstein-aether or Hořava-Lifshitz gravity). Then, we find an modified gravitational dynamics in which Ricci curvature is sourced by Bel-Robinson super-energy.

On gravity's role in the genesis of rest masses of classical fields

Abstract:It is shown that in the Einstein-conformally coupled Higgs--Maxwell system with Friedman-Robertson-Walker symmetries the energy density of the Higgs field has stable local minimum only if the mean curvature of the $t={\rm const}$ hypersurfaces is less than a finite critical value $\chi_c$, while for greater mean curvature the energy density is not bounded from below. Therefore, there are extreme gravitational situations in which even quasi-locally defined instantaneous vacuum states of the Higgs sector cannot exist, and hence one cannot at all define the rest mass of all the classical fields. On hypersurfaces with mean curvature less than $\chi_c$ the energy density has the `wine bottle' (rather than the familiar `Mexican hat') shape, and the gauge field can get rest mass via the Brout--Englert--Higgs mechanism. The spacelike hypersurface with the critical mean curvature represents the moment of `genesis' of rest masses.

Abstract:Newton's law of universal gravitation underpins our understanding of the dynamics of the Solar System and of a good portion of the observable universe. Generally, in the classroom or in textbooks, the law is presented initially in a qualitative way and at some point during the exposition its mathematical formulation is written on the blackboard and some quantitative consequences are discussed. In the present paper we argue that this approach can be improved by the use of plausibility arguments.

Abstract:General relativity is highly successful in explaining a wide range of gravitational phenomena including the gravitational waves emitted by binary systems and the shadows cast by supermassive black holes. From a modern perspective the theory is not fundamental though, but constitutes the lowest order term in an effective field theory description of the gravitational force. As a consequence, the gravitational dynamics should receive corrections by higher-derivative terms. This essay discusses structural aspects associated with these corrections and summarizes their imprint on static, spherically symmetric geometries. Along these lines, we critically reassess the common practice of using local field redefinitions in order to simplify the dynamics at the danger of shifting physics effects into sectors which are beyond the approximation under consideration.

Abstract:We address a subject that could have been analyzed century ago: how does the universe of general relativity look like when it would have been filled with solid matter? Solids break spontaneously the translations and rotations of space itself. Only rather recently it was realized in various context that the order parameter of the solid has a relation to Einsteins dynamical space time which is similar to the role of a Higgs field in a Yang-Mills gauge theory. Such a "crystal gravity" is therefore like the Higgs phase of gravity. The usual Higgs phases are characterized by a special phenomenology. A case in point is superconductivity exhibiting phenomena like the Type II phase, characterized by the emergence of an Abrikosov lattice of quantized magnetic fluxes absorbing the external magnetic field. What to expect in the gravitational setting? The theory of elasticity is the universal effective field theory associated with the breaking of space translations and rotations having a similar status as the phase action describing a neutral superfluid. A geometrical formulation appeared in its long history, similar in structure to general relativity, which greatly facilitates the marriage of both theories. With as main limitation that we focus entirely on stationary circumstances -- the dynamical theory is greatly complicated by the lack of Lorentz invariance -- we will present a first exploration of a remarkably rich and often simple physics of "Higgsed gravity".
