Abstract:Taking the quantization of electromagnetism as the paradigm, we show how this same procedure cannot work for Einstein gravity. However, it does work for conformal gravity, a fourth-order derivative, renormalizable theory of gravity that Bender and Mannheim have shown to be ghost free. We show that in any gravity theory gravity cannot be quantized canonically. Rather, because of an interplay between the zero-point energy of gravity and that of its matter source, gravity is quantized purely by its coupling to a quantized matter source, with gravity being intrinsically quantum mechanical. Treating the zero-point energy this way provides a solution to the cosmological constant problem. With the gravitational zero-point energy issue having been ignored in standard Einstein gravity, it is not possible to solve the cosmological constant problem in standard gravity, since without the zero-point contribution gravity does not know where the zero of energy is. We review and discuss recent work on the quantization of gravity, with emphasis on second-order plus fourth-order gravity theories and on pure fourth-order ones.

Abstract:Although it's widely believed that gravity should have a quantum nature like every other force, the conceptual obstacles to constructing a quantum theory of gravity compel us to explore other perspectives. Gravity is not like any other force. It alone defines a universal space-time geometry, upon which quantum fields evolve. We feel gravity because matter causes space-time to bend. Time flows at unequal rates at different locations. The rate at which time flows, and the causal structure it provides, may be required to have a classical description in order for quantum theory to be well-formulated. I discuss arguments for this proposition, but ultimately conclude that we must turn to experiment to guide us.

Abstract:Consider the interior of a black hole or the very early universe: matter is so densely localized that neither the effects of gravity nor those of quantum theory can be ignored. But this entails that neither general relativity nor quantum theory on its own can fully describe such a situation, for some of the most fundamental principles inhering in these two theories are haunted by the specter of incompatibility. Quantum gravity is the name for the bewildering penumbra of theories that seek to exorcise this demon. But it turns out that the metrical variables of general relativity constitute a lamp too narrow to bottle the phantom, and loop quantum gravity is a fascinating enterprise that seeks the Aladdin who does possess the required lamp. This is achieved by recasting general relativity as a theory of connections, rather than that of metrics. This shift of emphasis allows one to use a number of mathematical tools that make it possible to arrive at a fully consistent, almost background-independent theory of quantum gravity. This thesis endeavours to probe these ideas in detail.

Abstract:The extreme smallness of both the Planck length, on the one side, and the ratio of the gravitational to the electrical forces between, say, two electrons, on the other side has led to a widespread belief that the realm of quantum gravity is beyond terrestrial experiments. A series of classical and quantum arguments are put forward to dispel this view. It is concluded that whereas the smallness of the Planck length and the ratio of gravitational to electrical forces, does play its own essential role in nature, it does not make quantum gravity a science where humans cannot venture to probe her secrets. In particular attention is drawn to the latest neutron and atomic interferometry experiments, and to gravity wave interferometers. The latter, as Giovanni Amelino-Camelia argues [Nature 398, 216 (1999)], can be treated as probes of space-time fuzziness down to Planck length for certain quantum-gravity models.

Abstract:We comment on the fact that certain mathematical models that have been proposed in the quantum gravity literature, may not be subject to experimental checks, even if they turn out to be mathematically well defined. This means that they would be indistinguishable from other models, with a smaller number of quantum states. These considerations follow from very general properties of quantum measurement theory and classical gravity.

Abstract:The incompatibility between GR and QM is generally seen as a sufficient motivation for the development of a theory of Quantum Gravity. If - so a typical argumentation - QM gives a universally valid basis for the description of all natural systems, then the gravitational field should have quantum properties. Together with the arguments against semi-classical theories of gravity, this leads to a strategy which takes a quantization of GR as the natural avenue to Quantum Gravity. And a quantization of the gravitational field would in some sense correspond to a quantization of geometry. Spacetime would have quantum properties. But, this strategy will only be successful, if gravity is a fundamental interaction. - What, if gravity is instead an intrinsically classical phenomenon? Then, if QM is nevertheless fundamentally valid, gravity can not be a fundamental interaction. An intrinsically classical gravity in a quantum world would have to be an emergent, induced or residual, macroscopic effect, caused by other interactions. The gravitational field (as well as spacetime) would not have any quantum properties. A quantization of GR would lead to artifacts without any relation to nature. The serious problems of all approaches to Quantum Gravity that start from a direct quantization of GR or try to capture the quantum properties of gravity in form of a 'graviton' dynamics - together with the, meanwhile, rich spectrum of approaches to an emergent gravity and/or spacetime - make this latter option more and more interesting for the development of a theory of Quantum Gravity. The most advanced emergent gravity (and spacetime) scenarios are of an information-theoretical, quantum-computational type.

Abstract:The synthesis of quantum and gravitational physics is sought through a finite, realistic, locally causal theory where gravity plays a vital role not only during decoherent measurement but also during non-decoherent unitary evolution. Invariant set theory is built on geometric properties of a compact fractal-like subset $I_U$ of cosmological state space on which the universe is assumed to evolve and from which the laws of physics are assumed to derive. Consistent with the primacy of $I_U$, a non-Euclidean (and hence non-classical) state-space metric $g_p$ is defined, related to the $p$-adic metric of number theory where $p$ is a large but finite Pythagorean prime. Uncertain states on $I_U$ are described using complex Hilbert states, but only if their squared amplitudes are rational and corresponding complex phase angles are rational multiples of $2 \pi$. Such Hilbert states are necessarily $g_p$-distant from states with either irrational squared amplitudes or irrational phase angles. The gappy fractal nature of $I_U$ accounts for quantum complementarity and is characterised numerically by a generic number-theoretic incommensurateness between rational angles and rational cosines of angles. The Bell inequality, whose violation would be inconsistent with local realism, is shown to be $g_p$-distant from all forms of the inequality that are violated in any finite-precision experiment. The delayed-choice paradox is resolved through the computational irreducibility of $I_U$. The Schr\"odinger and Dirac equations describe evolution on $I_U$ in the singular limit at $p=\infty$. By contrast, an extension of the Einstein field equations on $I_U$ is proposed which reduces smoothly to general relativity as $p \rightarrow \infty$. Novel proposals for the dark universe and the elimination of classical space-time singularities are given and experimental implications outlined.
A postquantum theory of classical gravity?

Abstract:The effort to discover a quantum theory of gravity is motivated by the need to reconcile the incompatibility between quantum theory and general relativity. Here, we present an alternative approach by constructing a consistent theory of classical gravity coupled to quantum field theory. The dynamics is linear in the density matrix, completely positive and trace preserving, and reduces to Einstein's theory of general relativity in the classical limit. Consequently, the dynamics doesn't suffer from the pathologies of the semiclassical theory based on expectation values. The assumption that general relativity is classical necessarily modifies the dynamical laws of quantum mechanics -- the theory must be fundamentally stochastic in both the metric degrees of freedom and in the quantum matter fields. This allows it to evade several no-go theorems purporting to forbid classical-quantum interactions. The measurement postulate of quantum mechanics is not needed -- the interaction of the quantum degrees of freedom with classical space-time necessarily causes decoherence in the quantum system. We first derive the general form of classical-quantum dynamics and consider realisations which have as its limit deterministic classical Hamiltonian evolution. The formalism is then applied to quantum field theory interacting with the classical space-time metric. One can view the classical-quantum theory as fundamental or as an effective theory useful for computing the back-reaction of quantum fields on geometry. We discuss a number of open questions from the perspective of both viewpoints.

Abstract:After providing an extensive overview of the conceptual elements -- such as Einstein's `hole argument' -- that underpin Penrose's proposal for gravitationally induced quantum state reduction, the proposal is constructively criticised. Penrose has suggested a mechanism for objective reduction of quantum states with postulated collapse time T = h/E, where E is an ill-definedness in the gravitational self-energy stemming from the profound conflict between the principles of superposition and general covariance. Here it is argued that, even if Penrose's overall conceptual scheme for the breakdown of quantum mechanics is unreservedly accepted, his formula for the collapse time of superpositions reduces to T --> oo (E --> 0) in the strictly Newtonian regime, which is the domain of his proposed experiment to corroborate the effect. A suggestion is made to rectify this situation. In particular, recognising the cogency of Penrose's reasoning in the domain of full `quantum gravity', it is demonstrated that an appropriate experiment which could in principle corroborate his argued `macroscopic' breakdown of superpositions is not the one involving non-rotating mass distributions as he has suggested, but a Leggett-type SQUID or BEC experiment involving superposed mass distributions in relative rotation. The demonstration thereby brings out one of the distinctive characteristics of Penrose's scheme, rendering it empirically distinguishable from other state reduction theories involving gravity. As an aside, a new geometrical measure of gravity-induced deviation from quantum mechanics in the manner of Penrose is proposed, but now for the canonical commutation relations [Q, P] = ih.

Other related ideas seem to be drowning in interpretational quagmires. This leads us to consider alternative lines of thought for such phenomenological search. We discuss the underlying viewpoints and briefly mention their possible connections with other current theoretical ideas.

Abstract:…“but we do not have quantum gravity.” This phrase is often used when analysis of a physical problem enters the regime in which quantum gravity effects should be taken into account. In fact, there are several models of the gravitational field coupled to (scalar) fields for which the quantization procedure can be completed using loop quantum gravity techniques. The model we present in this paper consists of the gravitational field coupled to a scalar field. The result has similar structure to the loop quantum cosmology models, except that it involves all the local degrees of freedom of the gravitational field because no symmetry reduction has been performed at the classical level.

Abstract:Can we give the graviton a mass? Does it even make sense to speak of a massive graviton? In this essay I shall answer these questions in the affirmative. I shall outline an alternative to Einstein Gravity that satisfies the Equivalence Principle and automatically passes all classical weak-field tests (GM/r approx 10^{-6}). It also passes medium-field tests (GM/r approx 1/5), but exhibits radically different strong-field behaviour (GM/r approx 1). Black holes in the usual sense do not exist in this theory, and large-scale cosmology is divorced from the distribution of matter. To do all this we have to sacrifice something: the theory exhibits {*prior geometry*}, and depends on a non-dynamical background metric.

Abstract:We discuss the physical interpretation of the gravity mediated entanglement effect. We show how to read it in terms of quantum reference systems. We pinpoint the single gravitational degree of freedom mediating the entanglement. We clarify why the distinction between longitudinal and transverse degrees of freedom is irrelevant for the interpretation of the results. We discuss the relation between the LOCC theorem and the interpretation of the effect, its different relevance for, respectively, the quantum gravity and quantum information communities, and the reason for the excitement raised by the prospect of detection.

Abstract:The literature on quantum-gravity-inspired scenarios for the quantization of spacetime has so far focused on particle-physics-like studies. This is partly justified by the present limitations of our understanding of quantum-gravity theories, but we here argue that valuable insight can be gained through semi-heuristic analyses of the implications for gravitational phenomena of some results obtained in the quantum-spacetime literature. In particular, we show that the types of description of particle propagation that emerged in certain quantum-spacetime frameworks have striking implications for gravitational collapse and for the behaviour of gravity at large distances.

Abstract:The turn of the millennium was a time of optimism about an approach to noncommutative geometry inspired by rich mathematical objects called `quantum groups' and its applications to quantum spacetime. This would model quantum gravity effects as noncommutativity of spacetime coordinates and was arguably going to solve quantum gravity itself. It took a further 20 years from that point to develop a particularly suitable formalism of `quantum Riemannian geometry', but this was largely done and has begun to be used to construct baby quantum gravity models. In this article, we obtain new results for state of the art fuzzy sphere and n-gon models in this approach. We also review what are some elements of quantum gravity that we can already see and what are the critical conceptual and mathematical elements that are still missing to more fully achieve this goal.

Abstract:We review recent theoretical results, demonstrating breakdown of the equivalence between active and passive gravitational masses and energy due to quantum effects in General Relativity. In particular, we discuss the simplest composite quantum body - a hydrogen atom - and define its gravitational masses operators. Using Gedanken experiment, we show that the famous Einstein's equation, $E =mc^2$, is broken with small probability for passive gravitational mass of the atom. It is important that the expectation values of both active and passive gravitational masses satisfy the above mentioned equation for stationary quantum states. Nevertheless, we stress that, for quantum superpositions of stationary states in a hydrogen atom, where the expectation values of energy are constant, the expectation values of the masses oscillate in time and, thus, break the Einstein's equation. We briefly discuss experimental possibility to observe the above-mentioned time-dependent oscillations. In this review, we also improve several drawbacks of the original pioneering works.

This article briefly reviews previous work on Lorentz violation (LV) and discusses aspects of the effective field theory framework for parametrizing LV effects.
