Abstract:A gravitational gauge theory with a spin–affine connection (Lorentz connection) as a rotational gauge potential (fundamental dynamical variable) is suggested for reformulating the theory of Stephenson–Kilmister–Yang gravity, in which the Einstein field equation of gravity is a first-integral solution of a spin-connection gravitational gauge field equation. A heavy intermediate field $\phi $ that accompanies a matter field $\varphi $ is introduced in order to remove the conventional dimensionful gravitational coupling. Such a $\varphi $–$\phi $ coupling can lead to dimensionless gravitational coupling (i.e., the gravitational constant is dimensionless) in the present gravitational gauge field theory. A low-energy effective Lagrangian density for the matter field can be obtained by integrating out the accompanying heavy field in generating functional of path integral formalism, and therefore, a dimensionful gravitational coupling coefficient (Einstein gravitational constant) emerges. Such a dimensionless coupling of gravity, where the dimensionful coupling is emergent at low energies, is considered for scalar and spinor fields, which serve as gravitating matter fields (gravitational source). Though there are higher derivatives (e.g., third- and fourth-order partial derivatives) of the scalar and spinor fields in the low-energy effective Lagrangian densities, the ordinary equations of motion of the scalar and spinor fields can also be emergent from the present gravitational gauge theory. Therefore, the Einstein gravity can be recovered from the present gravitational gauge theory. In addition to the gravitational Lagrangian of the spacetime-rotational gauge potential (i.e., spin–affine connection), the Lagrangian of a spacetime-translational gauge potential (i.e., vierbein) is also constructed. Thus, the present dimensionless gravitational gauge coupling preserves local rotational and translational gauge symmetries. Since the spin-connection gravitational gauge field equation is a third-order differential equation of metric (the Einstein field equation of gravity is a first-integral solution), it could provide a new route to the vacuum energy cosmological constant problem.

Abstract:A first-order formulation of gravity is developed in which the fundamental fields consist of an SL(2,C) connection and two spinor-valued 1-forms. It is shown that the first term of an expansion of the Einstein-Hilbert action leads to an action for these fields which consists of dynamic L2 inner products of their covariant derivatives, resembling reasonable generalisations of the terms found in the actions of typical gauge theories on Minkowski spacetime. If additional terms corresponding to other forces and matter, formulated in the same manner, are then included, this approach may shed new light on interactions of gravity with matter and other force carriers.

A Note On The Canonical Formalism for Gravity

Abstract:We describe a simple gauge-fixing that leads to a construction of a quantum Hilbert space for quantum gravity in an asymptotically Anti de Sitter spacetime, valid to all orders of perturbation theory. The construction is motivated by a relationship of the phase space of gravity in asymptotically Anti de Sitter spacetime to a cotangent bundle. We describe what is known about this relationship and some extensions that might plausibly be true. A key fact is that, under certain conditions, the Einstein Hamiltonian constraint equation can be viewed as a way to gauge fix the group of conformal rescalings of the metric of a Cauchy hypersurface. An analog of the procedure that we follow for Anti de Sitter gravity leads to standard results for a Klein-Gordon particle.

Covariant Canonical Gauge Theory of Classical Gravitation for Scalar, Vector, and Spin-1/2 Particle Fields

Abstract:The framework of the Covariant Canonical Gauge theory of Gravity (CCGG) is described in detail. CCGG emerges naturally in the Palatini formulation, where the vierbein and the spin connection are independent fields. Neither torsion nor non-metricity are excluded. The manifestly covariant gauge process is based on canonical transformations in the De Donder-Weyl Hamiltonian formalism, starting from a small number of basic postulates. Thereby, the original system of matter fields in flat spacetime, represented by non-degenerate Hamiltonian densities, is amended by spacetime fields. The coupling of matter and spacetime fields leaves the action integral of the combined system invariant under active local Lorentz transformations and passive diffeomorphisms, aka Principle of General Relativity. We consider the Klein-Gordon, Maxwell-Proca, and Dirac fields and derive the corresponding equations of motion. Albeit the coupling of the given matter fields to the gauge fields are unambiguously determined by CCGG, the dynamics of the free gauge fields must be postulated based on physical reasoning. Our choice allows to derive Poisson-like equations of motion also for curvature and torsion. The latter is proven to be totally anti-symmetric. The affine connection is a function of the spin connection and vierbein fields. Requesting the spin connection to be anti-symmetric gives naturally metric compatibility. The canonical equations combine to an extension of the Einstein-Hilbert action with a quadratic Riemann-Cartan concomitant that endows spacetime with inertia. Moreover, a non-degenerate, quadratic version of the free Dirac Lagrangian is deployed. When coupled to gravity, the Dirac equation is endowed with an emergent mass parameter, a curvature-dependent mass correction, and novel interactions between particle spin and spacetime torsion.

Abstract:We clarify the structure obtained in Hélein and Vey's proposition for a variational principle for the Einstein-Cartan gravitation formulated on a frame bundle starting from a structure-less differentiable 10-manifold. The obtained structure is locally equivalent to a frame bundle which we term "generalised frame bundle". In the same time, we enrich the model with a Dirac spinor coupled to the Einstein-Cartan spacetime. The obtained variational equations generalise the usual Einstein-Cartan-Dirac field equations in that they are shown to imply the usualy field equations when the generalised frame bundle is a standard frame bundle.

Abstract:International Journal of Geometric Methods in Modern Physics, Ahead of Print. We review Holst formalism and dynamical equivalence with standard GR (in dimension [math]). Holst formalism is written for a spin coframe field [math] and a Spin(3,1)-connection [math] on spacetime [math] and it depends on the Holst parameter [math]. We show the model is dynamically equivalent to standard GR, in the sense that up to a pointwise Spin(3,1)-gauge transformation acting on (uppercase Latin) frame indices, solutions of the two models are in one-to-one correspondence. Hence, the two models are classically equivalent. One can also introduce new variables by splitting the spin connection into a pair of a Spin(3)-connection [math] and a Spin(3)-valued 1-form [math]. The construction of these new variables relies on a particular algebraic structure, called a reductive splitting. A weaker structure than requiring that the gauge group splits as the products of two sub-groups, as it happens in Euclidean signature in the selfdual formulation originally introduced in this context by Ashtekar, and it still allows to deal with the Lorentzian signature without resorting to complexifications. The reductive splitting of [math] is not unique and it is parameterized by a real parameter [math] which is called the Immirzi parameter. The splitting is here done on spacetime, not on space as it is usually done in the literature, to obtain a Spin(3)-connection [math], which is called the Barbero–Immirzi connection on spacetime. One obtains a covariant model depending on the fields [math] which is again dynamically equivalent to standard GR. Usually in the literature one sets [math] for the sake of simplicity. Here, we keep the Holst and Immirzi parameters distinct to show that eventually only [math] will survive in boundary field equations.

Abstract:We present the canonical analysis of different versions of unimodular gravity defined in the Plebański formalism, based on a (generally complex) SO(3) spin connection and set of (self-dual) two-forms. As in the metric formulation of unimodular gravity, one can study either a theory with fixed volume form or work in a parametrised formalism in which the cosmological constant becomes a dynamical field, constrained to be constant by the field equations. In the first case, the Hamiltonian density contains a part which is not constrained to vanish, but rather constrained to be constant, again as in the metric formulation. We also discuss reality conditions and challenges in extracting Lorentzian solutions.

Background-dependent and classical correspondences between $f(Q)$ and $f(T)$ gravity

Abstract:$f(Q)$ and $f(T)$ gravity are based on fundamentally different geometric frameworks, yet they exhibit many similar properties. In this article, we identify two types of background-dependent and classical correspondences between these two theories of gravity. The first correspondence is rooted in their equivalence within the background of Minkowski spacetime, while the second is based on the equivalence of their equations of motion. To establish the first correspondence, we develop the tetrad-spin formulation of $f(Q)$ gravity and we derive the corresponding expression for the spin connection. Additionally, we extract the equations of motion of $f(Q)$ gravity within this tetrad-spin framework and we elucidate the relationship through an example in spherical coordinates. For the second correspondence, we derive the general affine connection for the static and spherically symmetric spacetime in $f(Q)$ gravity, and we compare its equations of motion with the ones of $f(T)$ gravity. Amongst others, our results reveal that, within our affine connection branch, $f(T)$ solutions are not simply a subset of $f(Q)$ solutions; rather, they encompass a complex solution beyond $f(Q)$ gravity.

Abstract:We study the theory that contains two spin-2 fields. This theory can be regarded as a simplified version of higher spin gravity in AdS(3). It can be formulated either in the first order formulation or in the second order formulation. From the first order formulation, we construct the black holes in the theory and study the thermodynamics of these black holes with the help of dual holographic operator product expansion. From the higher spin point of view, this black hole is most naturally regarded as a black hole with a spin-2 hair. In the second order formulation, we obtain an action for the metric and extra spin-2 fields and analyze the corresponding black holes. Even though for some simple cases, the conventional notions, such as the horizon, may help us to read part of the information of the black hole, they break down in generic cases. On the other hand, the action in the second order formulation could be rewritten in the form of a decoupled AdS(3) bigravity. Moreover, the entropy of the black hole with the spin-2 hair could be reproduced from the AdS(3) bigravity in the Euclidean path-integral formalism.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a theory for gravity coupled with scalar, SU$(n)$ and spinor fields on manifolds with null-boundary. We perform the symplectic reduction of the space of boundary fields and give the constraints of the theory in terms of local functionals of boundary vielbein and connection. For the three different couplings, the analysis of the constraint algebra shows that the set of constraints does not form a first class system.

Abstract:The main purpose of this article is to provide access to a previously unpublished and nearly lost paper: P. Hořava, "Covariant Hamilton-Jacobi Equation for Pure Gravity", which appeared originally in July 1990 as a Prague Preprint PRA-HEP-90/4, at the Institute of Physics, Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, but appears otherwise unavailable online. The author has recently acquired an original copy of this preprint; the present article contains a verbatim transcript of the original 1990 paper, framed by a small number of comments. The contents of the 1990 paper was based on the results contained in the author's BSc Thesis, written in Czech, and presented at Charles University, Prague, in 1986. The original 1990 Abstract: We present an alternative framework for treating Einstein gravity in any dimension greater than two, and at any signature. It is based on a covariant Hamilton-Jacobi-De~Donder equation, which is proved to be equivalent to the Lagrange theory, on space-times of arbitrary topology. It in particular means that Einstein gravity can be thought of as a (covariantly) regular system. Finally, the Hamilton-Jacobi theory is studied, and it is shown that any solution of Einstein equations can be obtained from the action form equal identically to zero.

Abstract:Gravity is derived from an entropic action coupling matter fields with geometry. The fundamental idea is to relate the metric of Lorentzian spacetime to a density matrix. The matter fields curve spacetime, defining a metric induced by the matter fields. The entropic action is the quantum relative entropy between the metric of spacetime and the metric induced by the matter fields. The modified Einstein equations obtained reduce to the Einstein equations in the regime of low coupling. To simplify the theory, exclusively scalar matter fields are considered. This theoretical framework can be extended in different directions, for instance by including fermionic matter fields and gauge fields. A canonical quantization of this field theory could bring new insights into quantum gravity.

How the non-metricity of the connection arises naturally in the classical theory of gravity

Abstract:Spacetime geometry is described by two -- {\em a priori} independent -- geometric structures: the symmetric connection $\Gamma$ and the metric tensor $g$. Metricity condition of $\Gamma$ (i.e. $\nabla g = 0$) is implied by the Palatini variational principle, but only when the matter fields belong to an exceptional class. In case of a generic matter field, Palatini implies non-metricity of $\Gamma$. Traditionally, instead of the (1st order) Palatini principle, we use in this case the (2nd order) Hilbert principle, assuming metricity condition {\em a priori}. Unfortunately, the resulting right-hand side of the Einstein equations does not coincide with the matter energy-momentum tensor. We propose to treat seriously the Palatini-implied non-metric connection. The conventional Einstein's theory, rewritten in terms of this object, acquires a much simpler and universal structure. This approach opens a room for the description of the large scale effects in General Relativity (dark matter?, dark energy?), without resorting to purely phenomenological terms in the Lagrangian of gravitational field. All theories discussed in this paper belong to the standard General Relativity Theory, the only non-standard element being their (much simpler) mathematical formulation. As a mathematical bonus, we propose a new formalism in the calculus of variations, because in case of hyperbolic field theories the standard approach leads to nonsense conclusions.

Abstract:This paper gives a brief overview of the manifestly covariant canonical gauge gravity (CCGG) that is rooted in the De Donder-Weyl Hamiltonian formulation of relativistic field theories, and the proven methodology of the canonical transformation theory. That framework derives, from a few basic physical and mathematical assumptions, equations describing generic matter and gravity dynamics with the spin connection emerging as a Yang Mills-type gauge field. While the interaction of any matter field with spacetime is fixed just by the transformation property of that field, a concrete gravity ansatz is introduced by the choice of the free (kinetic) gravity Hamiltonian. The key elements of this approach are discussed and its implications for particle dynamics and cosmology presented. Among the results are especially: - Anomalous Pauli coupling of spinors to curvature and torsion of spacetime, - spacetime with (A)dS ground state, inertia, torsion and geometrical vacuum energy, - Zero-energy balance of the Universe leading to a vanishing cosmological constant and torsional dark energy.

Einstein Gravity from Einstein Action: Counterterms and Covariance

Abstract:The field equations of general relativity can be derived from the Einstein action, which is quadratic in connection coefficients, rather than the standard action involving the Gibbons-Hawking-York term and counterterm. We show that it is possible to construct a new counterterm directly for the Einstein action, which removes divergences and naturally introduces a flat reference spacetime. The total action is then covariant under simultaneous transformation of both the spacetime and reference tetrads, and argue that this is analogous to the Gibbons-Hawking action. We then explore different perspectives arising naturally from different uses of the reference tetrad, and explore implications of viewing gravity as fundamentally described in terms of non-covariant connection coefficients.

Gravity as a topological gauge theory

Abstract:We describe a topological gauge theory with underlying Cartan geometry $G/H$ and principal $H$-bundle. The topological action is constructed as a linear combination of the Euler and Pontrjagin numbers coming from entries of the curvature $\bar{\Omega}$ of a Cartan connection. As an example we show that for $G = SO(4,1)$ (respectively $SO(3,2)$) for $\Lambda_0 > 0$ (respectively $\Lambda_0 < 0$), and $H=SO(3,1)$, a very particular linear combination yields the Holst + Euler and Pontrjagin of the curvature $R$ of the spin connection + Nieh-Yan + bare cosmological constant $\Lambda_0$ terms. Additionally, in this construction, the coupling constants of these different terms are inherently linked together. The other example treated is the one of the Möbius group $G= SO(4,2) /\{\pm I\}$ and $H = CO(4,2) \ltimes \mathbb{R}^{3,1}$. By considering a constraint on the "pair of frames" $(\alpha,\beta)$ we retrieve an action comprising all terms compatible with diffeomorphism invariance and local Lorentz invariance described in the previous example + kinetic term for a scalar field $+$ an interaction of that scalar field with the Torsion $T$, the scalar field being related to dilation. Finally, in both examples, we study the equations of motion associated to the total (Gauge + Matter) action. It is especially shown that one of the solutions in the Möbius case consists of Einstein's equations modified by the Holst and Nieh-Yan terms with an additional source term for curvature depending on specific variations of spin density of matter.

Unfashionable observations about three dimensional gravity

Abstract:It is commonly accepted that the study of 2+1 dimensional quantum gravity could teach us something about the 3+1 dimensional case. The non-perturbative methods developed in this case share, as basic ingredient, a reformulation of gravity as a gauge field theory. However, these methods suffer many problems. Firstly, this perspective abandon the non-degeneracy of the metric and causality as fundamental principles, hoping to recover them in a certain low-energy limit. Then, it is not clear how these combinatorial techniques could be used in the case where matter fields are added, which are however the essential ingredients in order to produce non trivial observables in a generally covariant approach. Endly, considering the status of the observer in these approaches, it is not clear at all if they really could produce a completely covariant description of quantum gravity. We propose to re-analyse carefully these points. This study leads us to a really covariant description of a set of self-gravitating point masses in a closed universe. This approach is based on a set of observables associated to the measurements accessible to a participant-observer, they manage to capture the whole dynamic in Chern-Simons gravity as well as in true gravity. The Dirac algebra of these observables can be explicitely computed, and exhibits interesting algebraic features related to Poisson-Lie groupoids theory.
