Abstract:This essay's title is justified by discussing a class of Yang-Mills-type theories of which standard Yang-Mills theories are special cases but which is broad enough to include gravity as a double field theory. We use the framework of homotopy algebras, where conventional Yang-Mills theory is the tensor product ${\cal K}\otimes \frak{g}$ of a `kinematic' algebra ${\cal K}$ with a color Lie algebra $\frak{g}$. The larger class of Yang-Mills-type theories are given by the tensor product of ${\cal K}$ with more general Lie-type algebras of which ${\cal K}$ itself is an example, up to anomalies that can be cancelled for the tensor product with a second copy $\bar{\cal K}$. Gravity is then given by ${\cal K}\otimes \bar{\cal K}$.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem this paper attempts to address is the exploration of the relationship between generalized Yang-Mills-type theories and gravity, and the proposal of a new framework to understand this relationship. Specifically: 1. **Extending Yang-Mills Theory**: The paper defines a broader class of "Yang-Mills-type" theories based on homotopy algebra, where the standard Yang-Mills theory is the tensor product \( K \otimes g \) of a "dynamical" algebra \( K \) and a color Lie algebra \( g \). 2. **Gravity as a Yang-Mills-type Theory**: The paper proposes that within the broader Yang-Mills-type theories, gravity can be described as a double field theory of the form \( K \otimes \bar{K} \), where \( \bar{K} \) is a copy of \( K \). This construction allows the gravity theory to include fields such as the graviton, B-field (antisymmetric tensor), and dilaton (scalar). 3. **Generalization of the Double Copy Technique**: Inspired by the double copy technique, which is known in scattering amplitudes as "Gravity = (Yang-Mills)^2", the paper suggests that "Gravity = Yang-Mills" is a more appropriate viewpoint and elaborates on this through the homotopy algebra framework. 4. **Non-Renormalizability Issue**: The paper discusses how to overcome the non-renormalizability issue in general relativity through the form of double field theory and proposes a weak constraint condition to achieve better ultraviolet behavior. In summary, the main goal of the paper is to establish a more unified framework to understand and describe these two fundamental interactions by extending the concept of Yang-Mills theory and applying it to gravity theory.
