Abstract:A possibility of journeys through antigravity has recently been proposed, with the suggestion that Weyl-invariant extension of scalars coupled to Einstein gravity allows for an unambiguous classical evolution through cosmological singularities in anisotropic spacetimes. We compute the Weyl invariant curvature squared and find that it blows up for the proposed anisotropic solution both at the Big Crunch as well as at the Big Bang. Therefore the cosmological singularities are not resolved by uplifting Einstein theory to a Weyl invariant model.

Abstract:We present a theory in Maxwellian form for gravitational waves in a flat background. This requires us to identify the gravitational analogues of the electric and magnetic fields for light. An important novelty, however, is that our analogues are not vector fields but rather rank-two tensor fields; in place of a three-component vector at each point in space, as in electromagnetism, our fields are three by three symmetric matrices at each point. The resulting Maxwell-like equations lead directly to a Poynting theorem for the local energy density associated with a gravitational wave and to associated local properties including densities of momentum and angular momentum.

Abstract:Gravitational waves are being shown to derive directly from Newtonian dynamics for a continuous mass distribution, e.g. compressible fluids or equivalent. It is shown that the equations governing a continuous mass distribution, i.e. the inviscid Navier–Stokes equations for a general variable gravitational field g ( t , x ) , are equivalent to a form identical to the Maxwell equations from electromagnetism, subject to a specified condition. The consequence of this equivalence is the creation of gravity waves that propagate at a finite speed. The latter implies that Newtonian gravitation as presented in this paper is not ‘spooky action at a distance’ but rather is similar to electromagnetic waves propagating at finite speed, despite the apparent form appearing in the integrated field formula. In addition, this proves that, in analogy to the Maxwell equations, the Newtonian gravitation equations are Lorentz invariant for waves propagating at the speed of light. Since gravitational waves were so far derived only from Einstein’s general relativity theory, it becomes appealing to check if there is a connection between the Newtonian waves presented in this paper and the general relativity type of waves at least in a certain limit of overlapping validity, i.e. as a flat-space approximation. The latter is left for follow-up research.

Abstract:In a uniform gravitational field, classical test objects fall universally. Any reference object or observer will fall in the same universal manner. Therefore, a uniform gravitational field cannot create dynamics between observers and classical test objects. The influence of a uniform gravitational field on matter waves and clocks, however, is described inconsistently throughout research and education. To illustrate, we discuss the behavior of a matter-wave interferometer and a clock redshift experiment in a uniform gravitational field. As a consistent formulation of the equivalence principle implies, a uniform gravitational field has no observable influence on these systems and is physically equivalent to the absence of gravity.

The Gravito-Maxwell Equations of General Relativity in the local reference frame of a GR-noninertial observer

Abstract:We show that the acceleration-difference of neighboring free-falling particles (= geodesic deviation) measured in the local reference frame of a GR-noninertial observer is not given by the Riemann tensor. With the gravito-electric field of GR defined as the acceleration of free-falling quasistatic particles relative to the observer, the divergence of the gravito-electric field measured in the reference frame of a GR-noninertial observer is different from the Ricci curvature $R^0_{\,\,0}$. We derive our exact, explicit, and simple gravito-Gauss law for the divergence of the gravito-electric field in our new reference frame of a GR-noninertial observer with his LONB (Local Ortho-Normal Basis) and his LONB-connections in his time and 3-directions: the sources of the divergence of the gravito-electric field are contributed by all fields including the GR-gravitational fields, gravito-electric and gravito-magnetic. In the reference frame of a GR-inertial observer our gravito-Gauss law coincides with Einstein's $R^0_{\,\,0}$ equation, which does not have gravitational fields as sources. We derive the gravito-Ampere law, the gravito-Faraday law and the law for the divergence of the gravito-magnetic field. The densities of energy, momentum, and momentum-flow of GR-gravitational fields are local observables, but depend on observer with his local reference frame: these quantities are zero if measured by a GR-inertial observer. For a GR-noninertial observer the sources of gravitational energy, momentum, and momentum-flow densities have the opposite sign from the electromagnetic and matter sources. In the gravito-Gauss law the sources contributed by gravitational energy and momentum-flow densities have a repulsive effect on the gravitational acceleration-difference of particles.

Abstract:According to the classical Einstein-Maxwell theory of gravity and electromagnetism, a light-wave traveling in empty space-time is accompanied by a gravitational field of the pp-type. Therefore point masses are scattered by a light wave, even if they carry no electric or magnetic charge, or dipole moment. In this paper I present the explicit form of the metric and curvature for both circularly and linearly polarized light, and discuss the geodesic motion of test masses. This is followed by a discussion of classical scattering of point particles by the gravitational field associated with a circularly polarized electromagnetic block wave. A generalization to a quantum theory of particles in the background of these classical wave fields is presented in terms of the covariant Klein-Gordon equation. I derive the energy spectrum of quantum particles in the specific case of the circularly polarized block wave. Finally, a few general remarks on the extension to a quantum light wave are presented.

Abstract:We derive an effective equation and action for the propagation of gravitational waves (GW), encoding the effects of interaction and self-interaction in a time, frequency and polarization dependent effective speed. In terms of an appropriately defined effective metric, the effective action takes the form a massless Klein-Gordon action. This effective approach predicts that for theories with matter coupled to the Einstein frame metric the ratio between gravitational and electromagnetic (EM) luminosity distance depends on the effective speed, while for Jordan frame matter coupling it depends on the effective Planck mass. We discuss how the frequency and polarization dependence of the GW-EM distance ratio provides a new test of general relativity and its modifications, and more in general of the interaction of GWs with other fields.

Abstract:Adopting Schwinger's formalism for inferring Maxwell-Lorentz equations (MLEs) and combining three ingredients: (i) the laws of gravitostatics, (ii) the Galileo-Newton principle of relativity and (iii) existence of gravitational waves which travel in vacuum with a finite speed $c_g$, we inferred two sets of gravito-Maxwell-Lorentz Equations (g-MLEs). One of these sets corresponds to Heaviside's Gravity of 1893 and the other set corresponds to what we call Maxwellian Gravity (MG). HG and MG are mere two mathematical representations of a single physical theory called Heaviside-Maxwellian Gravity (HMG). While rediscovering Heaviside's gravitational field equations following Schwinger's formalism, we found a correction to Heaviside's speculative gravito-Lorentz force law. This work presents a Galilo-Newtonian foundation of gravitomagnetic effects and gravitational waves, caused by time-varying sources and fields, which are currently considered outside the domain of Newtonian physics. The emergence HMG from other well-established principles of physics is also noted, which established its theoretical consistency and fixed the value of $c_g$ uniquely at the speed of light in vacuum. The explanations of certain experimentally verified general relativistic results within HMG are also noted. We also report, a set of new Maxwell-Lorentz Equations, physically equivalent to the standard set, as a byproduct product of the present approach.
Motion of photons in a background of gravitational wave

Abstract:The photon motion in a Michelson interferometer is re-analyzed in both geometrical optics and wave optics. The classical paths of the photons in the background of gravitational wave are derived from Fermat principle, which is the same as the null geodesics in general relativity. The deformed Maxwell equations and the wave equations of electric fields in the background of gravitational wave are presented in flat-space approximation. Both methods show that the response of an interferometer depends on the frequency of a gravitational wave, however it is almost independent of the frequency of the mirror's vibrations. It implies that the vibrating mirror cannot mimic a gravitational wave very well.

On the Schrödinger equation for the free gravitational field

Abstract:The Hamiltonian of the metric General Relativity derived in our earlier study (Gravitation, {\bf 17}, 314 - 323 (2011)) is analyzed by the methods of Matrix Quantum Mechanics. This Hamiltonian is a quadratic function of the momenta $\pi^{mn}$ conjugate to the spatial components $g_{mn}$ of the metric tensor $g_{\alpha\beta}$. The Hamiltonian is reduced to the new form which is more convenient to derive the Schrödinger equation for the free gravitational field. In turn, this Schrödinger equation is used to study possible motions of the free gravitational field(s). In particular, it is shown that harmonic oscillations of the free gravitational field, or harmonic gravitational waves, cannot be observed as an actual motion of this field. We also investigate the internal structure of the solitary gravitational wave.

Abstract:We propose that particles are associated both with localized macroscopic states at point vertices and with extended microscopic states at all vacuum points. The self-fields screen the microscopic particle currents everywhere except at the particle vertex, observed as a point mass/charge carrier of such a nonlocal particle-field object. All vertices are excluded from the microscopic Maxwell-Lorentz and Einstein-type equations for elementary objects with continuous particle densities. The geodesic particle motion depends on a vector force with unified electromagnetic and gravitational components. The advanced gravitational wave, which will never come from infinity at finite times, and the retarded electromagnetic wave are vector anti-waves. Curved pseudo-Riemannian space-time always maintains flat 3D space that is in agreement with the measurements of planetary perihelion precession, gravitational light bending, radar echo delay, and the nearly isotropic 2.73K cosmic microwave background. The developed synthesis of gravity with electrodynamics and the particle with its field corresponds to the predicted way of double unification and the Rainich-Misner criterion.

Abstract:We study nonrelativistic gravity using the Hamiltonian formalism. For the dynamics of general relativity (relativistic gravity) the formalism is well known and called the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) formalism. We show that if the lapse function is constrained correctly, then nonrelativistic gravity is described by a consistent Hamiltonian system. Surprisingly, nonrelativistic gravity can have solutions identical to relativistic gravity ones. In particular, (anti-)de Sitter black holes of Einstein gravity and IR limit of Horava gravity are locally identical.

Abstract:Applying a simple harmonic map method to the cylindrically symmetric Einstein-Maxwell system, we obtain exact solutions representing strong nonlinear interaction between gravitational waves and electromagnetic waves in the case without any background field. As an interesting fact, we can show that with adjusted parameters the solutions represent occurrences of large conversion phenomena in the intense region of fields near the cylindrically symmetric axis.
