Abstract:Gravitational waves are being shown to derive directly from Newtonian dynamics for a continuous mass distribution, e.g. compressible fluids or equivalent. It is shown that the equations governing a continuous mass distribution, i.e. the inviscid Navier–Stokes equations for a general variable gravitational field g ( t , x ) , are equivalent to a form identical to the Maxwell equations from electromagnetism, subject to a specified condition. The consequence of this equivalence is the creation of gravity waves that propagate at a finite speed. The latter implies that Newtonian gravitation as presented in this paper is not ‘spooky action at a distance’ but rather is similar to electromagnetic waves propagating at finite speed, despite the apparent form appearing in the integrated field formula. In addition, this proves that, in analogy to the Maxwell equations, the Newtonian gravitation equations are Lorentz invariant for waves propagating at the speed of light. Since gravitational waves were so far derived only from Einstein’s general relativity theory, it becomes appealing to check if there is a connection between the Newtonian waves presented in this paper and the general relativity type of waves at least in a certain limit of overlapping validity, i.e. as a flat-space approximation. The latter is left for follow-up research.

Abstract:Gauss-Bonnet formula is used to derive a new and simple theorem of nonexistence of vacuum static nonsingular lorentzian wormholes. We also derive simple proofs for the nonexistence of lorentzian wormhole solutions for some classes of static matter such as, for instance, real scalar fields with a generic potential obeying $\phi V'(\phi) \ge 0$ and massless fermions fields.

Abstract:Contrary to conformal transformations, disformal transformations can change the principal null directions of a spacetime geometry. Thus, depending on the frame a gravitational wave (GW) detector minimally couples to, the properties of GWs may change under a disformal transformation. In this paper, we provide \textit{necessary} and \textit{sufficient} conditions which determine whether GWs change under disformal transformations or not. Our argument is coordinate-independent and can be applied to any spacetime geometry at the fully non-linear level. As an example, we show that an exact radiative solution of massless Einstein-scalar gravity which admits only shear-free parallel transported frame is mapped to a disformed geometry which does not possess any shear-free parallel transported frame. This radiative geometry and its disformed counterpart provide a concrete example of the possibility to generate tensorial GWs from a disformal transformation at the fully non-linear level. This type of non-linear effect can be completely overlooked in the usual linear perturbation theory.

Abstract:We present a novel mechanism for gravitational wave generation in the early Universe. Light spectator scalar fields during inflation can acquire a blue-tilted power spectrum due to stochastic effects. We show that this effect can lead to large curvature perturbations at small scales (induced by the spectator field fluctuations) while maintaining the observed, slightly red-tilted curvature perturbations at large cosmological scales (induced by the inflaton fluctuations). Along with other observational signatures, such as enhanced dark matter substructure, large curvature perturbations can induce a stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB). The predicted strength of SGWB in our scenario, ΩGWh2≃10−20–10−15 , can be observed with future detectors, operating between 10−5 Hz and 10 Hz. We note that, in order to accommodate the newly reported NANOGrav observation, one could consider the same class of spectator models. Gravitational waves in $f(Q)$ non-metric gravity via geodesic deviation

Abstract:We investigate gravitational waves in the $f(Q)$ gravity, i.e., a geometric theory of gravity described by a non-metric compatible connection, free from torsion and curvature, known as symmetric-teleparallel gravity. We show that $f(Q)$ gravity exhibits only two massless and tensor modes. Their polarizations are transverse with helicity equal to two, exactly reproducing the plus and cross tensor modes typical of General Relativity. In order to analyze these gravitational waves, we first obtain the deviation equation of two trajectories followed by nearby freely falling point-like particles and we find it to coincide with the geodesic deviation of General Relativity. This is because the energy-momentum tensor of matter and field equations are Levi-Civita covariantly conserved and, therefore, free structure-less particles follow, also in $f(Q)$ gravity, the General Relativity geodesics. Equivalently, it is possible to show that the curves are solutions of a force equation, where an extra force term of geometric origin, due to non-metricity, modifies the autoparallel curves with respect to the non-metric connection. In summary, gravitational waves produced in non-metricity-based $f(Q)$ gravity behave as those in torsion-based $f(T)$ gravity and it is not possible to distinguish them from those of General Relativity only by wave polarization measurements. This shows that the situation is different with respect to the curvature-based $f(R)$ gravity where an additional scalar mode is always present for $f(R)\neq R$.

Secondary Gravitational Waves in Non-local Starobinsky inflation

Abstract:We show how infinite derivative modifications of gravity impact on the stochastic background of Gravitational Waves from early Universe. The generic property of the ghost-free theory fixed on Minkowski space-time is the emergence of an infinite number of complex mass states when other classical backgrounds are considered. These additional states are shown to enhance the power spectrum of scalar perturbations generated during inflation. Current and future space-based and terrestrial interferometers offer indirect testing methods for the infinite derivative gravity action, enabling the exploration of new parameter spaces. In particular, we identify unconventional blue-tilted Gravitational Wave spectra, presenting a novel approach for testing infinite derivative quantum gravity in the future.

Abstract:It has been established that the famous three-dimensional Thurston geometries have four intrinsically Lorentzian analogs. We explore these spacetimes in three-dimensional general relativity nonminimally coupled to a scalar field together with electromagnetic matter. We find that three of these spacetimes support electromagnetic radiation, while, the other is partially sourced by a nonnull field and supports gravitational radiation. By addressing this problem we have also found a novel type of gravitational Cheshire effect.

Abstract:Gravitational waves sourced by amplified scalar perturbations are a common prediction across a wide range of cosmological models. These scalar curvature fluctuations are inherently nonlinear and typically non-Gaussian. We argue that the effects of non-Gaussianity may not always be adequately captured by an expansion around a Gaussian field, expressed through nonlinear parameters such as $f_{\rm{NL}}$. As a consequence, the resulting amplitude of the stochastic gravitational wave background may differ significantly from predictions based on the standard quadratic source model routinely used in the literature.

Abstract:Gravitational plane waves (when Ricci flat) belong to the VSI family. The achronym VSI stands for vanishing scalar invariants, meaning that all scalar invariants built out of Riemann tensor and its derivatives vanish, although the Riemann tensor itself does not. In the particular case of plane waves many interesting phenomena have been uncovered for strings propagating in this background. Here we comment on gravitons propagating in such a spacetime, which itself presumably consists of an Avogadro number of such gravitons.

Abstract:There are conflicting statements in the literature about the gravitational Faraday rotation of the plane of polarization of polarized electromagnetic radiation travelling through a gravitational wave. This issue is reconsidered using a simple formalism describing the rotation of the plane of polarization in a gravitational field, in the geometric optics approximation. It is shown that, to first order in the gravitational wave amplitude, the rotation angle is a boundary effect which vanishes for localized (astrophysically generated) gravitational waves and is non-zero, but nevertheless negligible, for cosmological gravitational waves.

Abstract:We show that null cosmic strings disturb gravitational fields of massive bodies and create outgoing gravitational waves (GW). We find perturbations of the metric caused by a straight null string and a pointlike massive source as solutions to linearized Einstein equations on a flat space-time and derive an analytic approximation for their asymptotic at future null infinity. A space-time created by the source and the string is shown to have an asymptotically polyhomogeneous form. We calculate GW flux in such space-times and demonstrate that the averaged intensity of the radiation is maximal in the direction of the string motion. A Coordinate-Independent Formalism for Detecting High-Frequency Gravitational Waves

Abstract:In an external electric or magnetic field, a gravitational wave (GW) may be converted into electromagnetic radiation. We present a coordinate-invariant framework to describe the GW signal in a detector that is based on this effect, such as cavities for axion searches. In this framework, we pay special attention to the definition of manifestly coordinate-independent expressions for the electromagnetic fields that an external observer would detect. A careful assessment of the detector's perceived motion allows us to treat both its mechanical and its electromagnetic response to the GW consistently. We further introduce well-defined approximations for which this motion may be neglected, and hence provide suggestions on which coordinate frame is suitable to characterise the GW signal in practice. We illustrate our findings in two examples, an infinitesimally thin rod and a spherical electromagnetic cavity.

Abstract:Gravitational waves are ripples in spacetime caused by accelerated motion of celestial bodies. They are among the fundamental prediction of Einstein's general theory of relativity. These waves have been observed emanating from various astrophysical sources, such as binary star systems, black holes and neutron stars. This abstract focuses on the theoretical and observational aspects of gravitational wave sources, with particular attention to plane symmetric sources. These spacetimes provide a simplified yet powerful framework for studying gravitational wave generation and propagation. By introducing a time conformal factor, these models capture the dynamic nature of spacetime and allow for the derivation of conservation laws linked to both exact and approximate Noether symmetries. This approach sheds light on the energy and momentum transfer processes during gravitational wave emission. Although real astrophysical sources often exhibit complex geometries, plane symmetric models offer valuable insights into the general properties and behaviors of these waves. This exploration enhances our understanding of physics and supports the ongoing development of observational techniques in this rapidly advancing field.

Abstract:The elusive physical nature of Horndeski gravity is elucidated in a new approach depicting this class of theories as a dissipative effective fluid. Requiring the constitutive equations of the latter to be those of a Newtonian fluid restricts the theory to only two disconnected subclasses of "viable" Horndeski gravity. Therefore, a stress-energy tensor of Horndeski effective fluid, linear in the first derivatives of the fluid's 4-velocity, is a sufficient condition for gravitational waves to propagate at light speed. All other Horndeski theories correspond to exotic non-Newtonian effective fluids.
