Abstract:A semi-microscopic approach, based on the continuum-random-phase Approximation (CRPA) method, is applied to describe the main properties (strength function, transition density, direct-nucleon-decay branching ratios) of the overtone of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance. Results of the calculation are presented for 208Pb in comparison with those obtained for the isoscalar monopole and dipole giant resonances within the same approach.

Shape of the Landau Subbands in Disordered Graphene

Abstract:The question of why different experiments obtain different shapes of Landau subbands of two-dimensional electron gases (2DEG's) is investigated. In particular, we consider disordered graphene within the tight-binding formulation in a high magnetic field and in the presence of impurity potentials of a finite interaction range. It is found that the shape of the total density of states (DOS) of Landau subbands is well described by a Gaussian function, while the shape of the local density of states (LDOS) can be fitted to either a simple Lorentzian function or a sum of several Lorentzian functions. This finding explains well why the experiments that measure the DOS of a Landau subband appear to be Gaussian, and those experiments that are sensitive to the LDOS can only be fitted well by Lorentzian functions. Thus, our results provide a natural explanation to this long-standing puzzle involving 2DEG's in the quantum Hall regime.

Abstract:We report direct observations of the scattering potentials in a two-dimensional electron-gas using electron-beam diffaction-experiments. The diffracting objects are local density-fluctuations caused by the spatial and charge-state distribution of the donors in the GaAs-(Al,Ga)As heterostructures. The scatterers can be manipulated externally by sample illumination, or by cooling the sample down under depleted conditions.

Abstract:By using scanning tunnelling spectroscopy, we study the influence of potential disorder on an adsorbate-induced two-dimensional electron system in the integer quantum Hall regime. The real-space imaged local density of states exhibits transition from localized drift states encircling the potential minima to another type of localized drift states encircling the potential maxima. While the former states show regular round shapes, the latter have irregular-shaped patterns. This difference is induced by different sources for the potential minima and maxima, i.e., substrate donors and an inhomogeneous distribution of the adsorbates, respectively.
Nonlocal correlations of the local density of states in disordered quantum Hall systems

Abstract:Motivated by recent high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments in the quantum Hall regime both on massive two-dimensional electron gas and on graphene, we consider theoretically the disorder averaged nonlocal correlations of the local density of states (LDoS) for electrons moving in a smooth disordered potential in the presence of a high magnetic field. The intersection of two quantum cyclotron rings around the two different positions of the STM tip, correlated by the local disorder, provides peaks in the spatial dispersion of the LDoS-LDoS correlations when the intertip distance matches the sum of the two quantum Larmor radii. The energy dependence displays also complex behavior: for the local LDoS-LDoS average (i.e., at coinciding tip positions), sharp positive correlations are obtained for tip voltages near Landau level, and weak anticorrelations otherwise.

Abstract:We analytically calculate the contribution to the local density of states due to thermal sources in a disk-like patch within the framework of fluctuational electrodynamics. We further introduce a wavevector cutoff method to approximate this contribution. We compare the results obtained with the source and cutoff method with the numerical exact LDOS above a metal disk attained by SCUFF-EM calculations. By this comparison we highlight the difference and resemblance of thermal and geometrical boundary conditions which are both relevant for near-field scanning microscope measurements. Finally, we give an outlook to general lateral temperature profiles and compare it with surface profiles.

Abstract:We investigate the spectral and transport properties of parallel double-quantum-dot (DQD) system with interdot tunneling coupling in both the equilibrium and nonequilibrium cases. The special geometry of DQD system is considered, in which each dot is connected to two leads by the tunneling barriers. With the help of Keldysh nonequilibrium Green function technique and the equation-of-motion approach, the spectral function and the conductance spectra of DQD system are calculated in two cases with and without the intradot Coulomb interaction, respectively. The exact calculation is performed in the absence of intradot Coulomb interaction. For the case with intradot Coulomb interaction, the Hartree-Fock approximation is applied to truncate the equation of motion for the high-order Green functions at high temperatures. The phenomenon of correlated electron transport is clearly shown in the linear conductance of each dot in the presence of interdot tunneling when setting one dot level and tuning another. The interplay between the intradot Coulomb interaction and the interdot tunneling coupling is displayed.
Dependences of local density of state on temperature, size, and shape in two-dimensional nano-structured superconductors

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a local density of state (LDOS) in two-dimensional nano-structured superconductors. We solve the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations self-consistently with the two-dimensional finite element method. In nano-structured superconductors, the LDOS as a function of the energy has many discrete peaks. A discretization of the LDOS comes from a discretization of energy levels due to the quantum confinement effect in nano-structured systems. When the temperature increases, a width of a peak in the LDOS is spread to a large energy range and neighbor peaks are superposed due to the thermal effect. On the other hand, for the fixed temperature, the behavior of the LDOS is different between nano-scaled rectangular and square systems. In the nano-scaled rectangular system, when only a lateral length increases, a contribution of the quantum confinement effect from the lateral side is suppressed, while the contribution from a longitudinal side remains large. Then, some peaks are left in the LDOS even when the lateral length is very large. These peaks form a periodic structure and can be regarded as gaps in a multi gap structure due to the quantum confinement effect. On the other hand, energy levels in the square system tend to arrange equally. Then, in the square system, peaks in the LDOS which exist in the rectangular system are small. Also, the period between peaks in the LDOS in the square system is smaller than the period in the rectangular system.

Abstract:We have studied experimentally the Landau level (LL) spectrum of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in an In0.53Ga0.47As/InP quantum well structure by means of low-temperature magneto-transport coincidence measurement in vector magnetic fields. It is well known that LL crossing occurs in tilted magnetic fields due to a competition between cyclotron energy and Zeeman effect. Remarkably, here we observe an additional type of level-crossing resulting from a competition between Rashba and Zeeman splitting in a small magnetic field, consistent with the theoretical prediction for strongly spin-orbit coupled 2DEG.
Local density of state oscillations in laterally heterostructured topological insulator-semiconductor systems

Abstract:We study local density of state (LDOS) oscillations arising from the scattering of electrons at atomic edge defects in topological insulator (TI) surfaces. To create edge scattering on the surface of a TI, we assume that half of its surface is covered with a semiconductor. In addition to modifying the TI states in the covered half, the presence of the semiconductor leads to a localized edge potential at the vacuum-semiconductor boundary. We study the induced LDOS by imposing time-reversal (TR) invariance and current conservation across the boundary. Additionally, we explore how the scattering of TI junctions with dissimilar spin textures and anisotropic Fermi velocities affect the modulations of the LDOS away from the junction edge. In all cases, for energies close to the Dirac point, we find that the decay envelope of the LDOS oscillations is insensitive to the scattering at the atomic edge defect, with a decay power given by $x^{-3/2}$. Quantitative differences in the amplitude of these oscillations depend on the details of the interface and the spin textures, while the period of the oscillations is defined by the size of the Fermi surface.

Abstract:We present numerical calculations of the Local Density of Optical States (LDOS) in the near field of disordered plasmonic films. The calculations are based on an integral volume method, that takes into account polarization and retardation effects, and allows us to discriminate radiative and non-radiative contributions to the LDOS. At short distance, the LDOS is dominated by non-radiative channels, showing that changes in the spontaneous dynamics of dipole emitters are driven by non-radiative coupling to plasmon modes. Maps of radiative and non-radiative LDOS exhibit strong fluctuations, but with substantially different spatial distributions.

Abstract:Fundamental interest for 2D electron gas (2DEG) systems has been recently renewed with the advent of 2D materials and their potential high-impact applications in optoelectronics. Here, we investigate a 2DEG created by the electron transfer from a Ag adatom gas deposited on a Si(111)$\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$-Ag surface to an electronic surface state. Using low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM), we measure the Ag adatom gas concentration and the 2DEG-induced charge transfer. We demonstrate a linear dependence of the surface work function change on the Ag adatom gas concentration. A breakdown of the linear relationship is induced by the occurrence of the Ag adatom gas superstructure identified as Si(111)$\sqrt{21}\times\sqrt{21}$-Ag only observed below room temperature. We evidence below room temperature a confinement of the 2DEG on atomic terraces characterised by spatial inhomogeneities of the 2DEG-induced charge transfer along with temporal fluctuations. These variations mirror the Ag adatom gas concentration changes induced by the growth of 3D Ag islands and the occurrence of an Ehrlich-Schwoebel diffusion barrier of 155$\pm$10meV.

Abstract:Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy we have measured the response of Dirac electrons in a magnetic field to the presence of a well-defined smoothly varying 1D periodic potential. We find that the lower index Landau level energies reliably trace the potential variations, while the higher index levels appear surprisingly homogeneous. Modeling the effects of the periodic potential on the Landau level spectra, we show that the Landau level behavior encodes information on the spatial extent of the wavefunctions. The lower index maps reveal Landau level stripes, which would act as traps for chiral one-dimensional modes. Our findings have important implications for transport and magneto-resistance measurements in Dirac materials with engineered potential landscapes.

Abstract:Electron confinement in hexagonal vacancy islands on Cu(111) is studied by state of the art ab initio calculations and experimentally by low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements (STS). Both theory and experiment reveal standing wave patterns of the local density of states (LDOS), which are ascribed to the scattering of surface-state electrons at the boundary of the vacancy island. The spatial modulation of the LDOS, its size, and energy dependence as measured by STS are well reproduced by our calculations. This agreement between theory and experiment corroborates the application of our theoretical approach to other confined systems, including spin-polarized effects. Our studies predict that quantum states of vacancy islands with magnetic adatoms can be used to tailor the spin-polarization of surface-state electrons on metal surfaces.

Abstract:The space- and temperature-dependent electron distribution n(r,T) is essential for the theoretical description of the optoelectronic properties of disordered semiconductors. We present two powerful techniques to access n(r,T) without solving the Schrödinger equation. First, we derive the density for nondegenerate electrons by applying the Hamiltonian recursively to random wave functions (RWF). Second, we obtain a temperature-dependent effective potential from the application of a universal low-pass filter (ULF) to the random potential acting on the charge carriers in disordered media. Thereby, the full quantum-mechanical problem is reduced to the quasiclassical description of n(r,T) in an effective potential. We numerically verify both approaches by comparison with the exact quantum-mechanical solution. Both approaches prove superior to the widely used localization landscape theory (LLT) when we compare our approximate results for the charge carrier density and mobility at elevated temperatures obtained by RWF, ULF, and LLT with those from the exact solution of the Schrödinger equation. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.107.064207 ©2023 American Physical Society
Disorder induced local density of states oscillations on narrow Ag(111) terraces

Abstract:The local density of states of Ag(111) has been probed in detail on disordered terraces of varying width by dI/dV-mapping with a scanning tunneling microscope at low temperatures. Apparent shifts of the bottom of the surface-state band edge from terrace induced confinement are observed. Disordered terraces show interesting contrast reversals in the dI/dV maps as a function of tip-sample voltage polarity with details that depend on the average width of the terrace and the particular edge profile. In contrast to perfect terraces with straight edges, standing wave patterns are observed parallel to the step edges, i.e. in the non-confined direction. Scattering calculations based on the Ag(111) surface states reproduce these spatial oscillations and all the qualitative features of the standing wave patterns, including the polarity-dependent contrast reversals.

Abstract:We demonstrate that fluctuations of the local density of states (LDOS) in strongly disordered graphene play an important role in determining the quantum capacitance of the top-gate graphene devices. Depending on the strength of the disorder induced by metal-cluster decoration, the measured quantum capacitance of disordered graphene can dramatically decrease in comparison with pristine graphene. This is opposite to the common belief that quantum capacitance should increase with disorder. To explain this counterintuitive behavior, we present a two-parameter model which incorporates both the non-universal power law behavior for the ADOS and a lognormal distribution of LDOS. We find excellent quantitative agreements between the model and measured quantum capacitance for three disordered samples in a wide range of Fermi energies. Thus, by measuring the quantum capacitance, we can simultaneously determine the ADOS and its fluctuations. It is the LDOS fluctuations that cause the dramatic reduction of the quantum capacitance.
Stable quantum dots in an InSb two-dimensional electron gas

Abstract:Indium antimonide (InSb) two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) have a unique combination of material properties: high electron mobility, strong spin-orbit interaction, large Landé g-factor, and small effective mass. This makes them an attractive platform to explore a variety of mesoscopic phenomena ranging from spintronics to topological superconductivity. However, there exist limited studies of quantum confined systems in these 2DEGs, often attributed to charge instabilities and gate drifts. We overcome this by removing the $\delta$-doping layer from the heterostructure, and induce carriers electrostatically. This allows us to perform the first detailed study of stable gate-defined quantum dots in InSb 2DEGs. We demonstrate two distinct strategies for carrier confinement and study the charge stability of the dots. The small effective mass results in a relatively large single particle spacing, allowing for the observation of an even-odd variation in the addition energy. By tracking the Coulomb oscillations in a parallel magnetic field we determine the ground state spin configuration and show that the large g-factor ($\sim$30) results in a singlet-triplet transition at magnetic fields as low as 0.3 T.

Abstract:The present work represents a review for the numerical calculation of the density of states (DoS) for two-dimensional tight-binding models with first neighbors in its normal state and for two superconducting order parameters. One is a singlet scalar state and the other is a triplet vector state. At the beginning an emphasis is given to the general expressions commonly used to the calculation of the density of states as the number of partial and total number of states, the degrees of freedom and the ab-initio methods most commonly used to its calculation. Then, the transition happening to the DoS normal states by varying the Fermi energy and the hopping parameter is investigated. After that, the numerical calculation of the superconducting density of states using the zero-temperature scattering cross-section is performed for the two order parameters. Finally, the residual density of states depending on disorder and the scattering potential strength using the Larkin equation are calculated for the two order parameter symmetries different in nature.

Abstract:The localization landscape gives direct access to the localization of bottom-of-band eigenstates in non-interacting disordered systems. We generalize this approach to eigenstates at arbitrary energies in systems with or without internal degrees of freedom by introducing a modified $\mathcal{L}^2$-landscape, and we demonstrate its accuracy in a variety of archetypal models of Anderson localization in one and two dimensions. This $\mathcal{L}^2$-landscape function can be efficiently computed using hierarchical methods that allow evaluating the diagonal of a well-chosen Green function. We compare our approach to other landscape methods, bringing new insights on their strengths and limitations. Our approach is general and can in principle be applied to both studies of topological Anderson transitions and many-body localization.
