Abstract:For the superconducting linear collider TESLA a multi purpose detector has been designed. This detector is optimised for the important physics processes expected at a next generation linear collider up to around 1 TeV and is designed for the specific environment of a superconducting collider.

Abstract:We consider the adiabatic charge transport through zero-dimensional mesoscopic sample (quantum dot) caused by two periodically changing external perturbations. Both the magnitude and the sign of the transmitted charge are extremely sensitive to the configuration of the dot and to the magnetic field. We find the correlation function characterizing the random value of this pumped charge for arbitrary strength of the perturbation. In contrast to previous theoretical and experimental claims, the charge is found not to have any symmetry with respect to the inversion of magnetic field. At strong pumping perturbation, the variance of the charge $<Q^2>$ is found to be proportional to the length of the contour in parametric space.

Abstract:Broadband noise on supercontinuum spectra generated in microstructure fiber is shown to lead to amplitude fluctuations as large as 50 % for certain input laser pulse parameters. We study this noise using both experimental measurements and numerical simulations with a generalized stochastic nonlinear Schroedinger equation, finding good quantitative agreement over a range of input pulse energies and chirp values. This noise is shown to arise from nonlinear amplification of two quantum noise inputs: the input pulse shot noise and the spontaneous Raman scattering down the fiber.

Abstract:The Transition Edge Sensor is extremely sensitive to the change of temperature, combined with the high-Z metal of a certain thickness, it can realize the high energy resolution measurement of particles such as X-rays. X-rays with energies below 10 keV have very weak penetrating ability, so only a few microns thick of gold or bismuth can obtain quantum efficiency higher than 70\%. Therefore, the entire structure of the TES X-ray detector in this energy range can be realized in the microfabrication process. However, for X-rays or gamma rays from 10 keV to 200 keV, sub-millimeter absorber layers are required, which cannot be realized by microfabrication process. This paper first briefly introduces a set of TES X-ray detectors and their auxiliary systems built by ShanghaiTech University, then focus on the introduction of the TES $\gamma$-ray detector, with absorber based on an sub-millimeter lead-tin alloy sphere. The detector has a quantum efficiency above 70\% near 100 keV, and an energy resolution of about 161.5eV@59.5keV.

Abstract:The high efficiency, low-background, and single-photon detection with transition-edge sensors (TES) is making this type of detector attractive in widely different types of application. In this paper, we present first characterizations of a TES to be used in the Any Light Particle Search (ALPS) experiment searching for new fundamental ultra-light particles. Firstly, we describe the setup and the main components of the ALPS TES detector (TES, millikelvin-cryostat and SQUID read-out) and their performances. Secondly, we explain a dedicated analysis method for single-photon spectroscopy and rejection of non-photon background. Finally, we report on results from extensive background measurements. Considering an event-selection, optimized for a wavelength of $1064~{\rm nm}$, we achieved a background suppression of $\sim 10^{-3}$ with a $\sim 50~\%$ efficiency for photons passing the selection. The resulting overall efficiency was $23~\%$ with a dark count rate of $8.6 \cdot 10^{-3}~{\rm s}^{-1}$. We observed that pile-up events of thermal photons are the main background component.

Abstract:We consider and compare candidate superconducting detector technologies that might be applied to the readout of cavity-axion haloscopes and similar fundamental physics experiments. We conclude that a transition edge sensor (TES) configured with ballistic-phonon thermal isolation operated with a superconducting transition temperature of order 30 mK would provide quantum-limited detection performance at frequencies above 5 GHz. This would permit the realisation of integrated homodyne detectors based on TESs that we believe would make a unique contribution to a variety of fundamental physics experiments, particularly those based on reading out microwave cavities in the quantum ground state.

Abstract:A new cavity-chain layout has been proposed for the main linac of the TESLA linear collider. This superstructure-layout is based upon four 7-cell superconducting standing-wave cavities, coupled by short beam pipes. The main advantages of the superstructure are an increase in the active accelerating length in TESLA and a saving in rf components, especially power couplers, as compared to the present 9-cell cavities. The proposed scheme allows to handle the field-flatness tuning and the HOM damping at sub-unit level, in contrast to standard multi-cell cavities. The superstructure-layout is extensively studied at DESY since 1999. Computations have been performed for the rf properties of the cavity-chain, the bunch-to-bunch energy spread and multibunch dynamics. A copper model of the superstructure has been built in order to compare with the simulations and for testing the field-profile tuning and the HOM damping scheme. A "proof of principle" niobium prototype of the superstructure is now under construction and will be tested with beam at the TESLA Test Facility in 2001. In this paper we present latest results of these investigations.

Abstract:The circular electron positron collider will measure the Higgs boson properties in great detail. The detector needs a three Tesla superconducting solenoid followed by a muon detector embedded in a flux return yoke. This article introduces the conceptual design of the superconducting solenoid includes two schemes based on Large Hadron Collider and HTS technology. The fundamental parameters and structures of magnets are discussed, and the advancements in electromagnetic design, quench calculation, cryogenic system design, and conductor development are outlined. The conductors used in the two schemes, the aluminum stabilized NbTi/Cu Rutherford cable and the aluminum stabilized stacked REBCO tape cable, are also under development. The viability of the first-ever HTS aluminum stabilized cable proposal is confirmed, and the technology of coextrusion aluminum coating has been preliminary mastered.

Abstract:Transition Edge Sensors (TESs) are characterized by the intrinsic figure of merit to resolve both the energy and the statistical distribution of the incident photons. These properties lead TES devices to become the best single photon detector for quantum technology experiments. For a TES based on titanium and gold has been reached, at telecommunication wavelength, an unprecedented intrinsic energy resolution (0.113 eV). The uncertainties analysis of both energy resolution and photon state assignment has been discussed. The thermal properties of the superconductive device have been studied by fitting the bias curve to evaluate theoretical limit of the energy resolution.

Abstract:Transition Edge Sensors (TES) are superconducting microcalorimeters that can be used for single-photon detection with extremely low backgrounds. When they are within their superconducting transition region, small temperature fluctuations - like the energy deposited by single photons - lead to large resistance variations. These variations can be measured using Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs). This technology is planned to be used as a single-photon detector for later runs of the ALPS II experiment, a light-shining-through-walls experiment at DESY Hamburg, searching for Axion-Like Particles (ALPs), which are possible Dark Matter (DM) candidates. Due to the very low dark count rates in our setup, our TES system might be viable for direct DM searches at sub-MeV masses through electron-scattering of DM in the superconducting chip, as well. Simulations concerning background rejection and calibration methods demonstrate the needed sub-eV sensitivity already.

Abstract:The conceptual design study of a Future Circular hadron-hadron Collider (FCC-hh) to be con-structed at CERN with a center-of-mass energy of the order of 100 TeV requires superconducting magnetic systems with a central magnetic flux density of an order of 4 T for the experimental detectors. The developed concept of the FCC-hh detector involves the use of an iron-free magnetic system consisting of three superconducting solenoids. A superconducting magnet with a minimal steel yoke is proposed as an alternative to the baseline iron-free design. In this study, both magnetic system options for the FCC-hh detector are modeled with the same electrical parameters using Cobham$'$s program TOSCA. All the main characteristics of both designs are compared and discussed.

Abstract:After three years of preparation, two superstructures, each made of two superconducting 7-cell weakly coupled subunits, have been installed in the TESLA Test Facility linac (TTF) for the cold- and beam-test. The energy stability, the HOMs damping, the frequency and the field adjustment methods were tested. The measured results confirmed expectation on the superstructure performance and proved that alternative layout for the 800 GeV upgrade of the TESLA collider, as it was proposed in TDR, is feasible. We report on the test and give here an overview of its results which are commented in more detail elsewhere in these Proceedings.
Observations of Mira stars with the IOTA/FLUOR interferometer and comparison with Mira star models

Abstract:We present K-band observations of five Mira stars with the IOTA interferometer. The interferograms were obtained with the FLUOR fiber optics beam combiner which provides high-accuracy visibility measurements in spite of time-variable atmospheric conditions. For the Mira stars X Oph, R Aql, RU Her, R Ser, and V CrB we derived the uniform-disk diameters 11.7 mas, 10.9 mas, 8.4 mas, 8.1 mas, and 7.9 mas (+/-0.3 mas), respectively. Simultaneous photometric observations yielded the bolometric fluxes. The derived angular Rosseland radii and the bolometric fluxes allowed the determination of effective temperatures. For instance, the effective temperature of R Aql was determined to be 3072 K +/- 161 K. A Rosseland radius for R Aql of 250 Rsun +/- 63 Rsun was derived from the angular Rosseland radius of 5.5 mas +/- 0.2 mas and the HIPPARCOS parallax of 4.73 mas +/- 1.19 mas. The observations were compared with theoretical Mira star models of Bessel, Scholz and Wood (1996) and Hofmann, Scholz and Wood (1998).

Abstract:The design of the proposed linear collider TESLA is based on 9-cell 1.3 GHz superconducting niobium cavities, operated in pulsed mode. Within the framework of an international collaboration the TESLA Test Facility (TTF) has been set up at DESY, providing the infrastructure for cavity R&D towards higher gradients. More than 60 nine-cell cavities were tested, accelerating gradients as high as 30 MV/m were measured. In the second production of TTF-cavities the average gradient was measured to be 24.7 MV/m. Two modules, each containing eight resonators, are presently used in the TTF-linac. These cavities are operated in pulsed mode: 0.8 ms constant gradient with up to 10 Hz repetitions rate. We will focus on two aspects: Firstly, the cavity fabrication and treatment is discussed, allowing to reach high gradients. Latest results of single cell cavities will be shown, going beyond 40 MV/m. Secondly, the pulsed mode operation of superconducting cavities is reviewed. This includes Lorentz force detuning, mechanical vibrations (microphonics) and rf field control. Both topics meet the upcoming interest in superconducting proton linacs, like the sc driver linac for SNS (Spallation Neutron Source).

Abstract:This note gives a conceptual description and illustration of the CLD detector, based on the work for a detector at CLIC. CLD is one of the detectors envisaged at a future 100 km $e^+e^-$ circular collider (FCC-ee). The note also contains a brief description of the simulation and reconstruction tools used in the linear collider community, which have been adapted for physics and performance studies of CLD. The detector performance is described in terms of single particles, particles in jets, jet energy and angular resolution, and flavour tagging. The impact of beam-related backgrounds (incoherent $e^+e^-$ pairs and synchrotron radiation photons) on the performance is also discussed.

Abstract:An important and fast-growing technology in the realm of cryogenic detectors has recently been applied to beamline science: the superconducting Transition-Edge Sensor (TES). A TES consists of a thin metal film that is held in the superconducting-to-normal transition by a voltage bias. When a single X-ray photon is absorbed, the temperature and resistance of the film increase, which causes a negative-going current pulse with amplitude proportional to the deposited energy. The thin-film thermometer is typically coupled to a photon absorber composed of a high atomic number element such as bismuth or gold, so efficiencies near unity are possible for X-rays up to 10 keV. TESs are an example of a broader class of sensors called microcalorimeters that measure energetic events through a change in temperature. The energy resolution of a well-designed microcalorimeter is set by thermodynamic power fluctuations between the sensor and the local heat bath as well as by additional noise terms such as the Johnson noise in the sensing element. The energy resolution ΔE of a microcalorimeter is proportional to (kbT2C)1/2 where T is the sensor temperature and C is its specific heat. The temperature dependence of ΔE makes it advantageous to operate TESs at the lowest temperatures that can be conveniently reached, typically 0.1 K. For X-ray measurements between 1–10 keV, the dependence of ΔE on C limits the C of individual sensors to about 10−12 J/K, corresponding to device areas near 0.1 mm2 [1].

Abstract:The detection of an electron bunch exiting a strong magnetic field can prove challenging due to the small mass of the electron. If placed too far from a solenoid's entrance, a detector outside the magnetic field will be too small to reliably intersect with the exiting electron beam because the light electrons will follow the diverging magnetic field outside the solenoid. The TITAN group at TRIUMF in Vancouver, Canada, has made use of advances in the practice and precision of photochemical machining (PCM) to create a new kind of charge collecting detector called the "mesh detector." The TITAN mesh detector was used to solve the problem of trapped electron detection in the new Cooler PEnning Trap (CPET) currently under development at TITAN. This thin array of wires etched out of a copper plate is a novel, low profile, charge agnostic detector that can be made effectively transparent or opaque at the user's discretion.

Abstract:The ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) consists of a central barrel, a muon spectrometer, zero degree calorimeters and additional detectors which are used for trigger purposes and for event classification. The main detector systems of relevance for measuring diffractive and electromagnetic processes are described. The trigger strategy for such measurements is outlined. The physics potential of studying diffractive and electromagnetic processes at the LHC is presented by discussing possible signatures of the Odderon.

Abstract:The Compact Linear Collider CLIC is designed to deliver e+e- collisions at a center of mass energy of up to 3 TeV. The detector systems at this collider have to provide highly efficient tracking and excellent jet energy resolution and hermeticity for multi-TeV final states with multiple jets and leptons. In addition, the detector systems have to be capable of distinguishing physics events from large beam-induced background at a crossing frequency of 2 GHz. Like for the detector concepts at the ILC, CLIC detectors are based on event reconstruction using particle flow algorithms. The two detector concepts for the ILC, ILD and SID, were adapted for CLIC using calorimeters with dense absorbers limiting leakage through increased compactness, as well as modified forward and vertex detector geometries and precise time stamping to cope with increased background levels. The overall detector concepts for CLIC are presented, with particular emphasis on the main detector and engineering challenges, such as: the ultra-thin vertex detector with high resolution and fast time-stamping, hadronic calorimetry using tungsten absorbers, and event reconstruction techniques related to particle flow algorithms and beam background suppression.
