Abstract:This report provides a brief overview of the objects involved in the geometric Langlands conjecture. It provides a summary of my research project over the course of the AMSI Vacation Scholarship in 2013/14. The nal section looks at how this has developed into my Honours project for the remainder of this year.

Abstract:Classical modular forms on the upper half plane, with respect to the modular group SL(2,Z) and its congruence subgroups, have arisen naturally in number theory, complex analysis, topology, mathematical physics, and many other subjects. The closely related automorphic representations are basic notions in the celebrated Langlands program, which was proposed by Langlands in the late 1960s and has since revolutionized the fields of number theory, arithmetic algebraic geometry, and representation theory. This volume consists of expanded lecture notes from a 2007 international conference in Guangzhou, China, at which several leading experts in number theory presented introductions to, and surveys of, many aspects of automorphic forms and the Langlands program. Abstract:This is a report on the work of Robert Langlands, following his award of the Abel Prize in 2018. It includes his contributions to the general areas of Representation Theory, Automorphic Forms, Number Theory and Arithmetic Geometry. We have tried to communicate the remarkable continuity that runs throughout all of his work, with its roots in several fundamental areas of mathematics. What is now known as the Langlands Program represents a unification of some of the deepest parts of these areas. We hope that at least some parts of the report will be accessible to a broader mathematical audience. Other parts will inevitably be more difficult. However, we can also hope that the report is presented in such a way as to lead to a better understanding of all sides of Langlands' work.

Geometric Langlands duality for periods

Abstract:We study conjectures of Ben-Zvi--Sakellaridis--Venkatesh that categorify the relationship between automorphic periods and $L$-functions in the context of the Geometric Langlands equivalence. We provide evidence for these conjectures in some low-rank examples, by using derived Fourier analysis and the theory of chiral algebras to categorify the Rankin-Selberg unfolding method.

Abstract:The Langlands Program relates Galois representations and automorphic representations of reductive algebraic groups. The trace formula is a powerful tool in the study of this connection and the Langlands Functoriality Conjecture. After giving an introduction to the Langlands Program and its geometric version, which applies to curves over finite fields and over the complex field, I give a survey of my recent joint work with Robert Langlands and Ngo Bao Chau (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1003.4578" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1003.4578">arXiv:1003.4578</a> and <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1004.5323" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1004.5323">arXiv:1004.5323</a>) on a new approach to proving the Functoriality Conjecture using the trace formulas, and on the geometrization of the trace formulas. In particular, I discuss the connection of the latter to the categorification of the Langlands correspondence.

Abstract:The Langlands Program was launched in the late 60s with the goal of relating Galois representations and automorphic forms. In recent years a geometric version has been developed which leads to a mysterious duality between certain categories of sheaves on moduli spaces of (flat) bundles on algebraic curves. Three years ago, in a groundbreaking advance, Kapustin and Witten have linked the geometric Langlands correspondence to the S-duality of 4D supersymmetric gauge theories. This and subsequent works have already led to striking new insights into the geometric Langlands Program, which in particular involve the Homological Mirror Symmetry of the Hitchin moduli spaces of Higgs bundles on algebraic curves associated to two Langlands dual Lie groups.

Abstract:A brief survey is given of the classical Langlands correspondence between n-dimensional representations of Galois groups of local and global fields of dimension 1 and irreducible representations of the groups GL(n). A generalization of the Langlands program to fields of dimension 2 is considered and the corresponding version for 1-dimensional representations is described. We formulate a conjecture on a direct image (=automorphic induction) of automorphic forms which links the Langlands correspondences in dimension 2 and 1. The direct image conjecture implies the classical Hasse-Weil conjecture on the analytical behaviour of the L-functions of curves defined over global fields of dimension 1.

Abstract:These are lecture notes (by the first author) from a course (by the second author) given over two extended semesters at the University of Sydney. The first part provides an introduction to the Langlands correspondence from an arithmetical point of view. Abstract:A comprehensive review of diamonds, in the sense of Scholze, is presented. The diamond formulations of the Fargues-Fontaine curve and are reviewed. Principal results centered on the diamond formalism in the global Langlands correspondence and the geometrization of the local Langlands correspondence are given. We conclude with a discussion of future geometrizations.

Abstract:Generalised hypergeometric sheaves are rigid local systems on the punctured projective line with remarkable properties. Their study originated in the seminal work of Riemann on the Euler–Gauss hypergeometric function and has blossomed into an active field with connections to many areas of mathematics. In this paper, we construct the Hecke eigensheaves whose eigenvalues are the irreducible hypergeometric local systems, thus confirming a central conjecture of the geometric Langlands program for hypergeometrics. The key new concept is the notion of hypergeometric automorphic data. We prove that this automorphic data is generically rigid (in the sense of Zhiwei Yun) and identify the resulting Hecke eigenvalue with hypergeometric sheaves. The definition of hypergeometric automorphic data in the tame case involves the mirabolic subgroup, while in the wild case, semistable (but not necessarily stable) vectors coming from principal gradings intervene.

Abstract:Let $X = G/H$ be an affine homogeneous spherical variety with abelian regular centralizer and no type N roots. In this paper, we formulate a relative geometric Langlands conjecture in the Dolbeault setting for $M = T^*X$. More concretely, we conjecture a Fourier-Mukai duality between the Dolbeault period sheaf and a sheaf whose construction closely resembles the Dirac-Higgs bundle of a polarization of the dual symplectic representation of Ben-Zvi, Sakellaridis, and Venkatesh. These conjectures can be seen as a generalization of Hitchin's conjectural duality of branes for symmetric spaces. We verify these conjectures in several cases, including the Friedberg-Jacquet case $X = GL_{2n}/GL_n\times GL_n$, the Jacquet-Ichino case $X = PGL_2^3/PGL_2$, the Rankin-Selberg case $X = GL_n\times GL_{n+1}/GL_n$, and the Gross-Prasad case $X = SO_n\times SO_{n+1}/SO_n$. Our main tool is the theory of the regular quotient, which was described in the context of symmetric spaces in [HM24].

Abstract:We describe an evolving and conjectural extension of the Langlands program for a class of nonlinear covering groups of algebraic origin studied by Brylinski-Deligne. In particular, we describe the construction of an L-group extension of such a covering group (over a split reductive group) due to Weissman, study some of its properties and discuss a variant of it. Using this L-group extension, we describe a local Langlands correspondence for covering (split) tori and unramified genuine representations, using work of Savin, McNamara, Weissman and W.W. Li. Finally, we define the notion of automorphic (partial) L-functions attached to genuine automorphic representations of the BD covering groups.

Abstract:The cosmic infrared background (CIB) consists of emission from distant, dusty, star-forming galaxies. Energetically, the CIB is very important as it contains as much energy as the extragalactic optical background. The nature and evolutionary status of the objects making up the background are, however, unclear. The CIB peaks at ~150 microns, and as such is most effectively studied from space. The limited apertures of space-borne telescopes set the angular resolution that can be attained, and so even Herschel, with its 3.5m diameter, will be confusion-limited at this wavelengths at ~5mJy. The bulk of the galaxies contributing to the CIB are fainter than this, so it is difficult to study them without interferometry. Here we present the results of a preliminary study of an alternative way of probing fainter than the continuum confusion limit using far-IR imaging spectroscopy. An instrument capable of such observations is being planned for SPICA - a proposed Japanese mission with an aperture equivalent to that of Herschel and more than 2 orders of magnitude more sensitive. We investigate the potential of imaging spectrometers to break the continuum confusion limit. We have simulated the capabilities of a spectrometer with modest field of view (2'x2'), moderate spectral resolution (R~1-2000) and high sensitivity. We find that such an instrument is capable of not only detecting line emission from sources with continuum fluxes substantially below the confusion limit, but also of determining their redshifts and, where multiple lines are detected, some emission line diagnostics. We conclude that 3-D imaging spectrometers on cooled far-IR space telescopes will be powerful new tools for extragalactic far-IR astronomy.
