Abstract:Classical modular forms on the upper half plane, with respect to the modular group SL(2,Z) and its congruence subgroups, have arisen naturally in number theory, complex analysis, topology, mathematical physics, and many other subjects. The closely related automorphic representations are basic notions in the celebrated Langlands program, which was proposed by Langlands in the late 1960s and has since revolutionized the fields of number theory, arithmetic algebraic geometry, and representation theory. This volume consists of expanded lecture notes from a 2007 international conference in Guangzhou, China, at which several leading experts in number theory presented introductions to, and surveys of, many aspects of automorphic forms and the Langlands program. Abstract:We provide the geometric construction of a series of generalized Schur algebras of any type via Borel-Moore homologies and equivariant K-groups of generalized Steinberg varieties. As applications, we obtain a Schur algebra analogue of the local geometric Langlands correspondence of any finite type, provide an equivariant K-theoretic realization of quasi-split $\imath$quantum groups of affine type AIII, and establish a geometric Howe duality for affine ($\imath$-)quantum groups.

Abstract:Using Maruyama's theory of elementary transformations, I show that the Brauer group surjects onto the cohomological Brauer group for separated geometrically normal algebraic surfaces. As an application, I infer the existence of nonfree vector bundles on proper normal algebraic surfaces.

Curve counting on abelian surfaces and threefolds

Abstract:We study the enumerative geometry of algebraic curves on abelian surfaces and threefolds. In the abelian surface case, the theory is parallel to the well-developed study of the reduced Gromov-Witten theory of K3 surfaces. We prove complete results in all genera for primitive classes. The generating series are quasimodular forms of pure weight. Conjectures for imprimitive classes are presented. In genus 2, the counts in all classes are proven. Special counts match the Euler characteristic calculations of the moduli spaces of stable pairs on abelian surfaces by Göttsche-Shende. A formula for hyperelliptic curve counting in terms of Jacobi forms is proven (modulo a transversality statement). For abelian threefolds, complete conjectures in terms of Jacobi forms for the generating series of curve counts in primitive classes are presented. The base cases make connections to classical lattice counts of Debarre, Goettsche, and Lange-Sernesi. Further evidence is provided by Donaldson-Thomas partition function computations for abelian threefolds. A multiple cover structure is presented. The abelian threefold conjectures open a new direction in the subject.

Abstract:There exists a dictionary between hereditary orders and smooth stacky curves, resp. tame orders of global dimension 2 and Azumaya algebras on smooth stacky surfaces. We extend this dictionary by explaining how the restriction of a tame order to a curve on the underlying surface corresponds to the fiber product of the curve with the stacky surface. By considering "bad" intersections we can start extending the dictionary in the 1-dimensional case to include non-hereditary orders and singular stacky curves. Two applications of these results are a novel description and classification of noncommutative conics in graded Clifford algebras, giving a geometric proof of results of Hu-Matsuno-Mori, and a complete understanding and classification of skew cubics, generalizing the work of Kanazawa for Fermat skew cubics.

Abstract:The space of surfaces $\mathbf{X}: [0,1]^2 \to \mathbb{R}^d$ is equipped with natural horizontal and vertical concatenation operations, and we study representations of surfaces which preserve this algebraic structure. The framework of higher category theory allows us to formalize this notion in terms of a functor between double groupoids. We construct such functors by generalizing the classical concept of the path-ordered exponential as a nonabelian path integral. This generalization yields a notion of nonabelian surface integration, and is known in higher gauge theory as surface holonomy (or higher parallel transport). We extend these constructions from smooth surfaces to bounded controlled $p$-variation surfaces in the Young regime, with $p < 2$. By focusing on surface holonomy valued in higher generalizations of the classical matrix groups, called matrix double groups, we obtain explicit computations for piecewise linear approximations. Furthermore, we generalize the nonabelian Stokes' and Fubini theorems to the Young regime. Finally, we use these matrix surface holonomy functors to construct characteristic functions for random surfaces such as fractional Brownian sheets with Hurst parameter $h> \frac{1}{2}$.

Local Langlands Correspondence for Classical Groups and Affine Hecke Algebras

Abstract:Using the results of J. Arthur on the representation theory of classical groups with additional work by Colette Moeglin and its relation with representations of affine Hecke algebras established by the author, we show that the category of smooth complex representations of a split $p$-adic classical group and its pure inner forms is naturally decomposed into subcategories which are equivalent to a tensor product of categories of unipotent representations of classical groups (in the sense of G. Lusztig). A statement of this kind had been conjecture by G. Lusztig. All classical groups (general linear, orthogonal, symplectic and unitary groups) appear in this context. We get also parameterizations of representations of affine Hecke algebras, which seem not all to be in the literature yet. All this should also shed some light on what is known as the stable Bernstein center.

Abstract:The strata of the moduli spaces of Abelian differentials are non-homogenous spaces carrying natural bi-algebraic structures. Partly inspired by the case of homogenous spaces carrying bi-algebraic structures (such as torii, Abelian varieties and Shimura varieties), Klingler and Lerer recently showed that any bi-algebraic curve in a stratum of the moduli space of Abelian differentials is linear provided that the so-called condition $(\star)$ is fulfilled. In this note, we construct a non-linear bi-algebraic curve, resp. surface, of Abelian differentials of genus $7$, resp. $10$.

Finite Fields and Their Applications

Abstract:We provide a theoretical study of Algebraic Geometry codes constructed from abelian surfaces defined over finite fields. We give a general bound on their minimum distance and we investigate how this estimation can be sharpened under the assumption that the abelian surface does not contain low genus curves. This approach naturally leads us to consider Weil restrictions of elliptic curves and abelian surfaces which do not admit a principal polarization.

Abstract:We construct a geometric realization of representations for $\text{PSL}(2, \mathbb{F}_p)$ by the defining ideals of rational models $\mathcal{L}(X(p))$ of modular curves $X(p)$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. Hence, for the irreducible representations of $\text{PSL}(2, \mathbb{F}_p)$, whose geometric realizations can be formulated in three different scenarios in the framework of Weil's Rosetta stone: number fields, curves over $\mathbb{F}_q$ and Riemann surfaces. In particular, we show that there exists a correspondence among the defining ideals of modular curves over $\mathbb{Q}$, reducible $\mathbb{Q}(\zeta_p)$-rational representations $\pi_p: \text{PSL}(2, \mathbb{F}_p) \rightarrow \text{Aut}(\mathcal{L}(X(p)))$ of $\text{PSL}(2, \mathbb{F}_p)$, and $\mathbb{Q}(\zeta_p)$-rational Galois representations $\rho_p: \text{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q}) \rightarrow \text{Aut}(\mathcal{L}(X(p)))$ as well as their modular and surjective realization. This leads to a new viewpoint on the last mathematical testament of Galois by Galois representations arising from the defining ideals of modular curves, which leads to a connection with Klein's elliptic modular functions. It is a nonlinear and anabelian counterpart of the global Langlands correspondence among the $\ell$-adic étale cohomology of modular curves over $\mathbb{Q}$, i.e., Grothendieck motives ($\ell$-adic system), automorphic representations of $\text{GL}(2, \mathbb{Q})$ and $\ell$-adic representations.

Verlinde series for Hirzebruch surfaces

Abstract:We give an explicit formula for Euler characteristics of line bundles on the Hilbert scheme of points on $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$. Combined with structural results of Ellingsrud, Göttsche, and Lehn, this determines the Euler characteristic of any line bundle on the Hilbert scheme of points on any smooth, projective surface. We also give an enumerative description of the dimensions of spaces of global sections of ample line bundles on Hilbert schemes of points on Hirzebruch surfaces, extending the polytope-line bundle correspondence on the underlying toric surface.

Secant varieties of curves, Ulrich bundles and the arithmetic writhe

Abstract:We establish a connection between the theory of Ulrich sheaves and $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy theory. For instance, we prove that the $\mathbb{A}^1$-degree of a morphism between projective varieties, that is relatively oriented by an Ulrich sheaf, is constant on the target even when it is not $\mathbb{A}^1$-connected. Further if an embedded projective variety is the support of a symmetric Ulrich sheaf of rank one, the $\mathbb{A}^1$-degree of all its linear projections can be read off in an explicit way from the free resolution of the Ulrich sheaf. Finally, we construct an Ulrich sheaf on the secant variety of a curve and use this to define an arithmetic version of Viro's encomplexed writhe for curves in $\mathbb{P}^3$. This can be considered to be an arithmetic analogue of a link invariant.

Abstract:We introduce tools for transferring nonnegativity certificates for global sections between line bundles on real algebraic surfaces. As applications, we improve Hilbert's degree bounds on sum-of-squares multipliers for nonnegative ternary forms, give a complete characterization of nonnegative real forms of del Pezzo surfaces, and establish quadratic upper bounds for the degrees of sum-of-squares multipliers for nonnegative forms on real ruled surfaces.

Abstract:The Langlands Program was launched in the late 60s with the goal of relating Galois representations and automorphic forms. In recent years a geometric version has been developed which leads to a mysterious duality between certain categories of sheaves on moduli spaces of (flat) bundles on algebraic curves. Three years ago, in a groundbreaking advance, Kapustin and Witten have linked the geometric Langlands correspondence to the S-duality of 4D supersymmetric gauge theories. This and subsequent works have already led to striking new insights into the geometric Langlands Program, which in particular involve the Homological Mirror Symmetry of the Hitchin moduli spaces of Higgs bundles on algebraic curves associated to two Langlands dual Lie groups.

Abstract:We introduce a new language to describe the geometry of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties in affine flag varieties. This second part of a two paper series uses this new language, i.e. the double Bruhat graph, to describe certain structure constants of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra. As an application, we describe nonemptiness and dimension of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties for most elements of the affine Weyl group and arbitrary $\sigma$-conjugacy classes.

Abstract:The equivariant cohomology of certain moduli spaces of sheaves on isotrivial elliptic surfaces are shown to admit representations of infinite dimensional Lie (super)algebras. The construction is based on work of Billig and Chen-Li-Tan on vertex representations of toroidal extended affine Lie algebras, and a geometric interpretation of bc-ghost systems on Hilbert schemes of points on ruled surfaces. The role of higher-nullity toroidal extended affine lie algebras are discussed in relation to tensor products of modules of a Yangian-like associative algebra. Applications to enumerative geometry are discussed in the introduction.

Abstract:For a smooth projective surface $X$ satisfying $H_1(X,\mathbb{Z}) = 0$ and $w \in H^2(X,\mu_r)$, we study deformation invariants of the pair $(X,w)$. Choosing a Brauer-Severi variety $Y$ (or, equivalently, Azumaya algebra $\mathcal{A}$) over $X$ with Stiefel-Whitney class $w$, the invariants are defined as virtual intersection numbers on suitable moduli spaces of stable twisted sheaves on $Y$ constructed by Yoshioka (or, equivalently, moduli spaces of $\mathcal{A}$-modules of Hoffmann-Stuhler). We show that the invariants do not depend on the choice of $Y$. Using a result of de Jong, we observe that they are deformation invariants of the pair $(X,w)$. For surfaces with $h^{2,0}(X) > 0$, we show that the invariants can often be expressed as virtual intersection numbers on Gieseker-Maruyama-Simpson moduli spaces of stable sheaves on $X$. This can be seen as a $\mathrm{PGL}_r$-$\mathrm{SL}_r$ correspondence. As an application, we express $\mathrm{SU}(r) / \mu_r$ Vafa-Witten invariants of $X$ in terms of $\mathrm{SU}(r)$ Vafa-Witten invariants of $X$. We also show how formulae from Donaldson theory can be used to obtain upper bounds for the minimal second Chern class of Azumaya algebras on $X$ with given division algebra at the generic point.

On conformally flat circle bundles over surfaces

Abstract:We study surface groups $\Gamma$ in $SO(4,1)$, which is the group of Mobius tranformations of $S^3$, and also the group of isometries of $\mathbb{H}^4$. We consider such $\Gamma$ so that its limit set $\Lambda_\Gamma$ is a quasi-circle in $S^3$, and so that the quotient $(S^3 - \Lambda_\Gamma) / \Gamma$ is a circle bundle over a surface. This circle bundle is said to be conformally flat, and our main goal is to discover how twisted such bundle may be by establishing a bound on its Euler number. By combinatorial approaches, we have two soft bounds in this direction on certain types of nice structures. In this article we also construct new examples, a "grafting" type path in the space of surface group representations into $SO(4,1)$: starting inside the quasi-Fuschsian locus, going through non-discrete territory and back.

Geometric structures for maximal representations and pencils

Abstract:We study fibrations of the projective model for the symmetric space associated with $\text{SL}(2n,\mathbb{R})$ by codimension $2$ projective subspaces, or pencils of quadrics. In particular we show that if such a smooth fibration is equivariant with respect to a representation of a closed surface group, the representation is quasi-isometrically embedded, and even Anosov if the pencils in the image contain only non-degenerate quadrics. We use this to characterize maximal representations among representations of a closed surface group into $\text{Sp}(2n,\mathbb{R})$ by the existence of an equivariant continuous fibration of the associated symmetric space, satisfying an additional technical property. These fibrations extend to fibrations of the projective structures associated to maximal representations by bases of pencils of quadrics.
