Abstract:By employing an in-situ reaction pressureless sintering method, self-reinforced and SiC-B4C-ZrB2 multiphase composites were successfully prepared. The effect of TiO2 and ZrO2 additions on the sintered density, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the composites was investigated. TiO2 and ZrO2 were completely transformed into TiB2 and ZrB2 phases during the sintering process, and their appropriate addition helped enhance the relative density of the composites. In the SiC-B4C-TiB2 (SBT) composite, the introduction of TiB2 facilitated grain growth in all phases. The composite with 12 vol% TiB2 (SBT12) exhibited optimal mechanical properties, with Vickers hardness, fracture toughness, and flexural strength reaching 30.1±0.8 GPa, 5.17±0.23 MPa·m1/2, and 491±24 MPa, respectively. In the SiC-B4C-ZrB2 (SBZ) composite, the presence of ZrB2 resulted in the formation of a ternary eutectic liquid phase, SiC-B4C-ZrB2, during the sintering process, leading to grain coarsening and the generation of plate-like SiC grains. Among them, the composite with 6 vol% ZrB2 (SBZ6) demonstrated the best overall performance, with Vickers hardness, fracture toughness, and flexural strength of 29.7±0.6 GPa, 6.17±0.36 MPa·m1/2, and 443±22 MPa, respectively. Additionally, SBZ9 exhibited the highest fracture toughness, reaching 6.43±0.44 MPa·m1/2, with the pull-out of plate-like grains considered as the primary contributing factor. This study provides a reference for the preparation of high-strength and tough SiC-B4C-MeB2 multiphase composites through low-temperature pressureless sintering.
