Abstract:High strength-elongation synergy and its dependence on microstructure are the eternal themes of metallic materials including Ti alloys. In this study, the relationship between the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of the Ti-25Zr-4Al-1.5Mn (TZAM, wt. %) near-α Ti alloy was systematically investigated after hot rolling at temperatures ranging in the whole solid solution region. The content of primary α phase decreased gradually with the increasing of rolling temperature. An excellent comprehensive mechanical properties with a yield strength of 1055±10 MPa and a total elongation of 23.6±0.6% were obtained for the specimen after rolling at 750 °C (single α phase temperature region). This great strength-elongation synergy is mainly due to the synthetic action of substructure strengthening, dislocation strengthening, basal random heterogeneity (BRH) texture, and suitable content of β phase. The α" martensitic phase was formed after rolling at temperatures of 800 and 850 °C (α + β two-phase temperature region), resulting in a significant decrease in yield strength. However, remarkable work hardening with a rate of approximately 10 GPa occurred in both specimens. The whole evolution process of primary α grains, namely dynamic recovery and recrystallization during hot-rolled is deeply discussed. When the rolling temperature increased to 900 °C (single β phase temperature region), the dominated acicular α´ martensitic phase with high dislocation density resulted in an ultra-high strength (1264±12 and 1488±11 MPa for yield and tensile strength respectively) at the expense of plasticity. These findings revealed the microstructure evolution and its relationship to the mechanical properties of a TiZr-based alloy after the thermomechanical processing and helped to understand deeply the theory of metallic strengthening and elongation.

Abstract:The Al-11.0Mg-2.6Si-4.0Zn-0.6Mn (wt%) alloy is a new developed high strength die cast alloy which can be used for structural parts in the automotive and aerospace industry. In this study, the effect of various amount of Ti on microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of Al-11.0Mg-2.6Si-4.0Zn-0.6Mn (wt%) alloy under as-cast and T6 heat treatment conditions are investigated. The addition of Ti results in the formation of Al3Ti intermetallic phase, and the volume fraction and forming temperature increases with the increase of titanium content. With 0.1wt% Ti addition, the best mechanical properties of the alloy. The yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation reach up to 350 MPa, 440 MPa and 3.29% respectively after heat treatment. Titanium content should be controlled below 0.10%.

Abstract:The objective of this investigation is to ascertain the initial recrystallization temperature range for a novel Mo-TiC-ZrC-C (TZM) alloy. Annealing experiments were conducted on the TZM alloy rolled sheet, revealing an initial recrystallization temperature of 1100 °C. In the temperature range of 1100 ∼ 1150 °C, there were notable changes in yield strength (11 %), tensile strength (13 %) and elongation (19 %). Due to the varying effects of annealing temperature and recrystallization within distinct temperature ranges, the average grain size of the TZM alloy exhibits an initial increase followed by a decrease in the range of 900 ∼ 1200 °C. At 1200 °C, a noteworthy enhancement in recrystallized grains is observed.

Abstract:The TZM alloy plates were prepared by powder metallurgy and rolling method. The microstructure of TZM alloy sintered blank and sheet were observed by metallographic microscope and scanning electron microscope. The results show that sintered blank density is 9.94 g/cm3, the Rockwell hardness is 65 HRC, the microstructure of sintered blank is equiaxed grain, grain uniform distribution, the average grain size is 10 μm and has clear outline of the grain boundary. The density of TZM alloy sheet is 10 g/cm3 after rolling, the tensile strength is 914 MPa and the elongation is 4.6%. Analysis and comparison of the microstructure for the annealed sample under 1000, 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400, 1500 and 1600°C show that the TZM alloy sheet is in the recovery stage at 1000°C, 1100°C, and in start recrystallization state at 1200°C, and fully recrystallized at 1600°C.

Abstract:Based on TZM molybdenum alloy, TZM alloy doped with rare-earth oxide La2 O3 was produced by powder metallurgy. La-TZM sheet was obtained by hot-rolling, warm-rolling and cold rolling. The results show that tensile strength and elongation of La-TZM sheet is higher than TZM sheet. By metallographical experiment, the fiber structure of La-TZM alloy sheet is slender than TZM alloy sheet. The second phase of La-TZM alloy sheet is smaller and disperses homogeneously. The fracture morphology of both alloy sheet was observed by SEM. the second phase of La-TZM alloy sheet fracture is smaller and disperses homogeneously. By EDS analysis, the doping of lanthanum oxide can refine the second phase particles of TZM alloy. The microstructure of La-TZM alloy sheet fracture perform is more compaction.

Abstract:High temperature structural materials are in great demand for power, chemical and nuclear industries which can perform beyond 1000°C as super alloys usually fail. In this regard, Mo based TZM alloy is capable of retaining strength up to 1500°C with excellent corrosion compatibility against molten alkali metals. Hence, currently this alloy is considered an important candidate material for high temperature compact nuclear and fusion reactors. Due to reactive nature of Mo and having high melting point, manufacturing this alloy by conventional process is unsuitable. Powder metallurgy technique has limited success due to restriction in quantity and purity. This paper deals with fabrication of TZM alloy by nonconsumable tungsten arc melting technique. Initially a ternary master alloy of Mo-Ti-Zr was prepared which subsequently by dilution method, was converted into TZM alloy gradually by external addition of Mo and C in various proportions. A number of melting trials were conducted to optimize the process parameters like current, voltage and time to achieve desired alloy composition. The alloy was characterized with respect to composition, elemental distribution profile, microstructure, hardness profile and phase analysis. Well consolidated alloy button was obtained having desired composition, negligible material loss and having microstructure as comparable to standard TZM alloy.

Abstract:The conventional TZM alloy plates have limited manufacture and application due to the lacking of enough mechanical property. To resolve this question, La doped TZM alloy plate was made by the powder metallurgy. With solid-solid rare La2O3 doping, sintering, hot rolling, warm rolling and cold rolling, the molybdenum alloy La-TZM plates were got. This kind of TZM alloy has better properties in both strength and elongation. The tensile strength of La-TZM alloy is 1038 MPa, and the elongation is 10.4%. Metallography test and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) are used to examine the microstructure of the La-TZM alloy plate specimen.

Abstract:The microstructures and mechanical properties of cast and extruded Al-4Cu-1Li-0.4Mg-0.1Zr-xZn alloys were investigated and the amount of Zn additions was up to 1.1 wt%. The results showed that Zn addition could bring additional MgZn2 phases at the grain boundary and slightly refine the grain size in the as-cast alloy. The mechanical properties of extruded Al-4Cu-1Li-0.4Mg-0.1Zr-xZn alloy increased gradually with the Zn content under different conditions. The yield strength (YS) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of T8 treated (stretched by 4% and aged at 150 degrees C for 32 h) 1.1 Zn alloy could reach 639 MPa and 666 MPa, while elongation (EL) remained at 10.9%. For alloys peak-aged at 175 degrees C for 32 h (T6 treated), Zn could effectively promote the precipitation of T-1 phases (Al2CuLi) but decrease the volume fraction of theta' phases (Al2Cu) in the matrix. The coarsening of T-1 phases could be obviously suppressed by the addition of Zn under overaged condition. However, the precipitate of T-1 phases promoted by Zn under the T8 condition is not as obvious as the T6 condition.

Abstract:<p>The high-temperature tensile properties and microstructures of as-processed (forged and rolled) TZM alloy were studied during thermoplastic deformation by uniaxial tensile tests at different annealing temperatures (850 °C–1450 °C). The recrystallization phenomenon observed for rolled TZM alloy about 1300 °C and forged TZM alloy about 1400 °C. The forged state as an example, the annealing forged TZM alloy performed cup-shaped fracture by SEM being stretched at 1600 °C and studying the initiation, aggregation and growth of micropores during the fracture process were performed. ODF map was used to accurately prove the orientation distribution density in any orientation of forged TZM alloy space after annealing. The activation of the forged TZM alloy sliding system was related to the structure of the material, the deformation method and the force direction. Meanwhile, the high-resolution Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) technique was used to study thermoplastic deformation behavior and microstructure evolution of forged TZM alloy under different annealing temperatures in Channel5 software, getting a deeper deformation mechanism of forged TZM alloy during thermal deformation.</p>

Abstract:A series of molybdenum‐titanium‐zirconium (TZM) alloys with continuous oxygen content gradients were fabricated by powder metallurgy and the correlation between microstructure and properties was investigated. By controlling the carbon source, TZM-like alloys with an oxygen content of 2000 ppm, 1000 ppm, and TZM alloy with an oxygen content of 300 ppm (±100) were obtained, followed by rolling and heat treatment, and the effect of oxygen on the development of the microstructure and the mechanical properties of the alloy was studied. The results show that the changing of the oxygen content has a significant impact on the mechanical properties and microstructure of the alloy. With the increase in oxygen content, titanium and zirconium are more inclined to combine with oxygen to form oxide particles of titanium and zirconium (TiO 2 , ZrO 2 ), the secondary phase particles increase significantly, and the alloy strengthening mode changes from solid solution strengthening to secondary phase dispersion strengthening. Owing to the inhibition of grain boundary migration by the secondary phase, the grain size of the alloy decreases as its oxygen content rises, which causes an increase in hardness of around 10 HV0.1 for every 1000 ppm increase in oxygen content. According to the Hall-Petch relationship, the yield strength of the annealed alloy increased from 336 MPa (300 ppm) to 556 MPa (2000 ppm) with smaller grain size. Kernal Average Misorientation (KAM) is used to characterize the dislocation density of the alloy, and the results show that the value of KAM is negatively correlated with the toughness of the alloy. The KAM value of the alloy is the lowest at 1000 ppm and its greatest elongation reaching 16.8%. Dislocation cells formed in the long-striped grains with an oxygen content of 300 ppm, greatly enhancing the strength of the material and maintain good plasticity. TZM alloy with 300 ppm oxygen has the highest tensile strength of 866 MPa and has an elongation of 15%, which is the leading performance compared with ASTM-specification B386/B386M.

Abstract:Microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast and heat-treated Mg-12.3Zn-5.8Y-1.4Al (ZYA1261) alloy were investigated. The phase compositions of the as-cast alloy are alpha-Mg, Mg3YZn6 (I-phase), Mg(3)y(2)Zn(3) (W-phase), Mg12YZn (Z-phase), Mg24Y5, MgZn and a small quantity of Al-containing phase. The phase compositions change with various heat treatment conditions. The highest Vickers hardness is obtained in the alloy aged at 200 degrees C for 5 h, the transmission electron microscopy indicated that fine scale Z-phase precipitates in the matrix. Abstract:Combined with microstructure characterization and properties tests, the effects of Zn contents on the mechanical properties, corrosion behaviors, and microstructural evolution of extruded Al–Li–Cu–Mg–Ag alloys were investigated. The results show that the increase in Zn contents can accelerate hardening kinetics and improve the hardness of peak-aged alloys. The Zn-added alloys present non-recrystallization characteristics combined with partially small recrystallized grains along the grain boundaries, while the T1 phase with finer dimension and higher number density could explain the constantly increasing tensile strength. In addition, increasing Zn contents led to a lower corrosion current density and a shallower maximum intergranular corrosion depth, thus improving the corrosion resistance of the alloys. Zn addition, distributed in the central layer of T1 phases, not only facilitates the precipitation of more T1 phases but also reduces the corrosion potential difference between the T1 phase and the matrix. Therefore, adding 0.57 wt.% Zn to the alloy has an excellent combination of tensile strength and corrosion resistance. The properties induced by Zn under the T8 temper (solid solution treatment + water quenching + 5% pre-strain+ isothermal aging), however, are not as apparent as the T6 temper (solid solution treatment + water quenching + isothermal aging).

Abstract:This work was aimed in the relationships investigation among the microstructure, the tensile properties and the thermo-mechanical processing of a novel Ti-25Zr-1B (wt%) alloy. The alloy was evaluated under different conditions (as-cast, hot-rolled and hot-rolled-annealed). The XRD diagrams demonstrated that all specimens were completely consisted of the α and TiB phases. The results of EDS indicated that the TiB phase dissolved a certain amount of Zr, which was in agreement with the existence of TiB peaks shifting towards lower diffraction angles. The as-cast Ti-25Zr-1B alloy microstructure and the size, the morphology, the orientation, and the distribution of the TiB particles could be significantly altered by the hot-rolling process. The hot-rolling process provided an ultimate strength increase of at least 7 pct and the elongation-to-failure increase of 135 pct relatively to the as-cast sample. In addition, the annealing heat treatment could effectively modify the mechanical properties of the hot-rolled sample. The strength decreased and the elongation-to-failure increased as the annealing temperature increased, while the temperature was below 800°C. In contrast, as the annealing temperature increased to 900°C, the alloy demonstrated appreciably lower elongation-to-failure and higher strength compared to the annealed form at 800°C. The mechanical properties variation of the Ti-25Zr-1B alloy series was ascribed to the microstructure evolution of the matrix alloy as well as to the morphology and volume fraction changes of the TiB particles.
Development of a new magnesium alloy ZW21

Abstract:A new magnesium alloy named ZW21 has been developed through orthogonal experiment method and the effects of heat treatment on the alloy's tensile properties have also been investigated. The results indicate that the alloy only has one Mg-Zn-Y(Nd) phase of Mg3Zn3(Y, Nd)2 (named W phase) and has higher mechanical properties, lower cost and lighter weight compared with the other congeneric alloys. Its microstructure is composed of small equiaxed dendrites and interdendritic discontinuous net-like eutectic structures. The eutectic structures appear in divorced W phase laths in the thin regions between the dendritesand in regular W+ α-Mg lamellar structures in the triangle regions. The eutectic structures, especially the W phase, with such distribution are harmful to the tensile properties and thus proper heat treatment can improve its properties through changing the W phase distribution. Solution treatment at 525 °C for 4 h (T4 treatment) increases the elongationfrom 17.75% to 26.5%. Subsequent ageing treatment at 250 °C for 24 h (T6 treatment) improves the ultimate tensile strength from 210 MPa to 243 MPa. The fracture modes of the as-cast, T4- and T6-treated alloys all obey the quasi-cleavage regime. The fracture of the as-cast alloy belongs to a mixed mode of intergranular and transgranular forms, but those of the T4- and T6-treated alloys follow the transgranular mode due to the relatively highbonding strength between the grains. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:La(NO3)(3) and La2O3 doped titanium-zirconium-molybdenum (TZM) alloys were fabricated by using powder metallurgy method, and their room and high temperature mechanical properties were studied in this paper. Results show that the mechanical properties of La(NO3)(3)-TZM alloy sheet is better than that of La2O3-TZM alloy sheet in room temperature and the high temperature mechanical properties of both alloys have similar change trend but different sensitivity of temperature. The tiny grains in La(NO3)(3)-TZM alloy sheet is more sensitive to temperature and the lanthanum doping significantly influences the temperature sensitivity of the alloy. When the temperature is lower than 1400 degrees C, both TZM alloy sheets present a transgranular fracture mode. It is ductile intergranular fracture mode when the temperature is higher than 1400 C, and the temperature of fracture mode transition is 1400 degrees C. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:To obtain the optimal mechanical properties, several processes including spray forming technology, two passes hot extrusion and substantial heating treatments were operated on an Al-Zn-Mg-Cu-Zr alloy. The characterization methods used in this study include tensile tests, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and microstructure observations by optical microscope, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The typical characteristics were the refined grain, homogeneous precipitates and porosity in the as-deposited pre-forms. The ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, hardness and elongation improved significantly after two passes hot extrusion. A good combination of ultimate tensile strength at 704 MPa and elongation at 9.7% were achieved under peak-aged treatment. The best ultimate tensile strength was obtained at 732 MPa after re-aging and regression. It was main dimple fracture in the extruded and aging treated specimens while brittle fracture for the as-deposited. The secondary phases were main MgZn2 and Al3Zr dispersoids throughout all the states. The contributions of grain boundaries, dislocations, solid-solution and precipitates on the yield strength were analyzed using a quantitative equation.

Abstract:The high temperature (HT) thermal stability and mechanical properties of Al−5%Cu (AC) and Al−5%Cu−0.2%Mn−0.2Zr% (ACMZ) alloys from 573 to 673 K were systematically studied. The results displayed that micro-alloying additions of Zr and Mn elements have presented a significant role in stabilizing the main strengthening metastable θ′ precipitates at a temperature as high as 573 K. Simultaneously, the HT tensile test demonstrated that ACMZ alloy retained their strength of (88.6±8.8) MPa, which was much higher than that of AC alloy ((32.5±0.8) MPa) after the thermal exposure at 573 K for 200 h. Finally, the underlying mechanisms of strength and ductility enhancement mechanism of the ACMZ alloy at HT were discussed in detail.

Mechanical Properties and Corrosion Behavior of a Beta Titanium Alloy

Abstract:Recently, people devote to the development of beta titanium alloys which have better biocompatibility because of the addition of Mo, Nb, Ta, Zr, Sn, et al. In this paper, the effects of heat treatment and cold roll deformation on the mechanical properties of the Ti-11.3Mo-6.6Zr-4.3Sn alloy (TMZS) are investigated by tensile test. The results show that the excellent combination of strength and ductility can be obtained by heat treatment or cold deformation. The TMZS alloy can obtain intermediate modulus, stronger than nickel titanium, weaker than stainless steel. The corrosion resistance of this alloy in the Hank's solution, 0.9% NaCl physiological solution and artificial saliva with different pH values at 37 are investigated by means of open-circuit potential (OCP), Tafel and potentiodynamic anodic polarization techniques. All the test results suggest that the TMZS alloy has excellent corrosion resistance in the three simulated solutions especially in the artificial saliva and has a large potential for biomedical application. In addition, the pH value and simulated solutions have some influence on the corrosion resistance of the TMZS alloy.
