Abstract:Due to wide use and low price,Ca-based absorbents have become the mainstream sorbents used to remove SO2 in coal-fired power plants. It is plausible to develop SO2 and NOx synergistic removal based on the calcium-based desulfurization technology. The feasibility of developing SO2 and NOx synergistic removal by calcium based absorbents is illustrated in this paper. According to reaction temperature of SO2 and NOx synergistic removal,SO2 and NOx synergistic removal technologies are divided into SO2 and NOx combined removal in furnace,SO2 and NOx simultaneous removal at medium temperature and SO2 and NOx synergistic removal at low temperature. The basic principles, research status and problems of each type of technology are analyzed. NOx can be removed at low temperature in the Ca-based FGD process by using the oxidation method to convert NO to NO2,but NO2 absorption efficiency and absorbent utilization are two key issues which restrict the technology progress. The development of SO2 and NOx synergistic removal by calcium-based desulfurization is prospected. SO2 and NOx synergistic removal at low temperature will have broad industrial application and development prospect as ultra-low emission is achieved in the coal-fired power plants.
Study on desulfurization reaction characteristic of calcium-based sorbents

Abstract:Experimental research work on the reaction between SO 2 and two dry calcium-based sorbent (CaO and Ca(OH) 2) is reported. Reactivity of the two sorbents is compared and the influences of some factors such as particle size, reaction temperature and four additives (Fe 2O 3, Na Cl, V 2O 5 and ZnO) on reaction rate are investigated. The above results are helpful to desulfurization reaction optimization, sorbent selection and the dry FGD system development.

Abstract:The interactions between the desulphurization and denitrification reactions were studied to improve the simultaneous removal of SO2 by calcium-based sorbent and NOx by NH3 injection.The effects of NO in the flue gas and the injected NH3 on the CaO desulphurization reaction and of the catalytic activity of the sulfated CaO on the SCR reaction in the presence of SO2,CO2 and H2O were investigated at 700~850 ℃ in a fixed-bed reactor.The results indicate that NO has no obvious effect on the CaO desulphurization,NH3 slightly reduces the desulphurization reaction rate only when CO2 and H2O also exist in the gas for temperatures of 700~750 ℃ and SO2 suppresses the catalytic activity of sulfated CaO but the effect is reversible and can be reduced by H2O.Generally,the sulfated CaO exhibited strong catalytic activity in the SCR reaction in the simulated flue gas.The experimental results also confirm the catalytic activity of sulfated CaO for the deNOx reaction in the presence of SO2,CO2 and H2O.

Abstract:A novel sorbent for SO2 removal has been investigated. The sorbent is obtained by conventional incipient wetness impregnation of abandoned biomaterials (straw or dried leaves) with an aqueous solution of Na2CO3. A material with the composition 80 wt % Na2CO3/straw shows a desulfurization activity which is both higher and faster than that of the reference sample Na2CO3/gamma-Al2O3. The breakthrough and stoichiometric SO2 adsorption efficiencies for 80 wt % Na2CO3/straw reach 48.9% and 80.6%, respectively, at a temperature of 80 degrees C. The adsorption efficiencies are almost constant in the temperature range 70 to 300 degrees C. According to IR and XPS analysis the main products observed on the spent sorbent are sulfite below 150 degrees C and sulfate at 300 degrees C. The Na2CO3 in 80 wt % Na2CO3/straw can potentially be recycled by the oxidation of the straw with concomitant reduction of the sulfite species to elemental sulfur, making the proposed process CO2 neutral.

Abstract:Systematic comparative experiments on simultaneous flue gas desulfurization and denitrification were conducted with CaCO3 as the sorbent and with NaClO2 and KMnO4 as oxidants.The influences of different experimental conditions on the removal efficiencies of SO2 and NO were examined.Experimental results show that NaClO2 gives better desulfurization and denitrification results than KMnO4 under the same conditions.Lower pH is beneficial to denitrification oxidized with NaClO2,but it has no significant impact on denitrification with KMnO4.NO removal efficiency can be improved by increasing SO2 concentration or decreasing NO concentration,more notably for the oxidant NaClO2 than KMnO4.Increasing the feeding amount of oxidant or the depth of jet tubes immersed into the sorbent results in a rise in the removal efficiencies of SO2 and NO.

Abstract:The reactivities of two kinds of sorbent toward SO2 and NO2 at 350 degreesC were investigated and the results showed that as an alkaline material, calcium based sorbent can absorb both SO2 and NO2, though the NO2 removal rate was about 1/3 less than SO2 removal rate. It was also shown that industry grade CaO has greater reactivity toward SO2 and NO2, compared with analysis grade CaO. Combined removals of SO2 and NO2 with two kinds of sorbent at 350 degreesC were investigated. The experimental results showed that calcium based sorbent can remove SO2 and NO2 together, and NO2 improves SO2 removal rate at the presence of metal oxides.

Abstract:A mathematics model is proposal for simulating desulfurization process in a CaO activation reactor of a limestone injection FGD system. The effective factors, including particle motion, water evaporation, particle impact, and aqueous sorbent reaction, have been considered in this model. By use of calculating results and experimental results from a 3000 N .m(3)/h pilot plant experimental system of CaO activation reactor, the effect of flue gas temperature, particle size, water injection and Ca/S molar ratio on desulfurization efficiency is investigated in detail. It is found that desulfurization efficiency rises with the increase of Ca/S molar ratio, the amount of water injection and the decrease of particle size, flue gas temperature. A method to improve desulfurization efficiency in the CaO activation reactor is also given in this paper. The above results are a help for semi-dry FGD system design.

Abstract:A technology of simultaneous fluorine/sulfur removal during coal combustion was presented. The experimental research and theoretical analysis were reported and discussed. Several high temperature sorbents composed of calcium-based waste materials were developed. The efficiency of fluorine removal is 57-75% and that of sulfur removal is 31-42%, while the sorbent amounts to 5% of the coal. The technology is simple and practical, and the cost of the sorbent is very low.

Abstract:NOx and SO2 are the main air pollutants emitted from the coal-fired combustors. Since the typical combination of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and we flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) is not suitable for some of industrial flue gas treatment due to their unsuitable temperature window and limited retrofitting space, new technologies must be developed. This paper proposes an effective we method for simultaneous removal of NOx and SO2. The insoluble NO was first oxidized into NO2 by ozone, and then NO2 together with SO2 were both absorbed in one we wash tower. To further improve NO2 removal efficiency, a new kind of additive was proposed and tested. Effects of various influence factors, such as additive concentration, residence time in the wash tower, liquid/gas ratios, initial NO/SO2/O-2 concentration and slurry pH value, were carefully evaluated in a home-designed experimental platform. Results indicated that the NOx removal efficiency was positively correlated with the increasing the additive concentration, while the maximum denitration and desulfurization efficiency were more than 95% and 86%. The NOx removal efficiency was enhanced with the increasing residence time and liquid/gas ratios. The alkaline environment was verified to be beneficial for the simultaneous absorption process. The exiting O-2 in flue gas would not consume additives, and the denitration and desulfurization efficiency were insensitive to the initial NO and SO 2 concentration as well. Only 2% decrease of the denitration efficiency was observed after 300 mins stability test, while the desulfurization efficiency kept > 98%. With the characterizations of Ion Chromatograph (IC), NO2-, NO3- and SO42- were detected as the main absorption by-products anions, whereas NO2- accumulation would inhibit the overall NOx removal. Finally, the mechanism of simultaneous removal of SO2 and NO using the novel liquid phase catalyst was proposed and discussed.

Abstract:The calcium-based sorbent for simultaneous removal of SO2/NO was prepared with KMnO4 as additive. The activity of sorbent was studied individually in a fixed bed at low temperature. The experimental results showed that KMnO4 could highly enhance the sorbent ability for NO capture. It was found that temperature rise could improve SO2 capture, but could not influence NO removal so distinctively. The presence of water vapor in the gas could prominently improve the sorbent's ability to capture SO2 and NO, and an optimal relative humidity existed for NO removal. O-2 and KMnO4 were found to play an important role in NO removal. The optimum condition for simultaneous SO2/NO removal was studied, including reaction temperature, O-2 concentration, and relative humidity in the flue gas. XRD and IC analysis indicated that SO2 was absorbed as sulfate with KMnO4 present and as calcium sulfite with KMnO4 absent. It was further deduced from the experimental results that NO was first oxidized into NO2 and then was removed by reaction with calcium hydroxide and calcium sulfite into nitrate and nitrite.

Abstract:Technologies for desulfurization and denitrition at the same time are classified as simultaneous and combined removal of SO2 and NOx by different mechanisms.The characteristics and mechanisms of several typical methods were introduced in details.Compared with technologies for DeSO2 and DeNOx separately,simultaneous removal has the advantages of cost effectiveness and flexibility.Calcium-based sorbent for simultaneous removal of SO2 and NOx in low temperature is a promising method to control flue gas pollution,with properties of low cost,easy product disposal and water saving.

Abstract:With the vigorous development of China's iron and steel industry and the introduction of ultra-low emission policies, the emission of pollutants such as SO2 and NOx has received unprecedented attention. Considering the increase of the proportion of semi-dry desulfurization technology in the desulfurization process, several semi-dry desulphurization technologies such as flue gas circulating fluidized bed (CFB), dense flow absorber (DFA) and spray drying absorption (SDA) are briefly summarized. Moreover, a method for simultaneous treatment of SO2 and NOx in sintering/pelletizing flue gas by O3 oxidation combined with semi-dry method is introduced. Meantime, the effects of key parameters such as O3/NO molar ratio, CaSO3, SO2, reaction temperature, Ca/(S+2N) molar ratio, droplet size and approach to adiabatic saturation temperature (AAST) on denitrification and desulfurization are analyzed. Furthermore, the reaction mechanism of denitrification and desulfurization is further elucidated. Finally, the advantages and development prospects of the new technology are proposed.

Abstract:One technological process employing ozone and heterogeneous catalyst-sorbents was proposed for removal of SO2 from flue gas. The catalyst-sorbents were developed and tested especially for adsorption and oxidation of SO2. Alternative catalyst-supporters including γ-Al2O3, permutite, silica gel, activated carbon and diatomite combined with different metal oxides (MnO2, Cr2O3, Fe2O3, CuO, CoO and NiO) were evaluated and tested. It was found that γ-Al2O3 doped with MnO2 can be considered as removal-effective sorbent for adsorption and oxidation of SO2. The synergetic effect between ozone and catalyst was found to be dominated. Effects of catalyst preparation parameters like calcination temperature, metal loaded and reaction temperature, etc. were investigated based on the MnO2/Al2O3 catalyst-sorbents. Results show that γ-Al2O3 combined with 8% Mn, calcinated under 573 K and reacted at 413 K are the optimal parameters for removal of SO2. Extra NO in flue gas can slightly enhance the capture efficiency of SO2.

Abstract:Promoting the nitrogen oxide (NOx) absorption step is the major challenge for simultaneous removal of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and NOx in wet flue gas desulfurization. This paper studied NOx absorption and absorption product formation in limestone slurry. The effect of CaCO3 concentration, NOx composition, and SO2 and O-2 concentration was investigated. A proposed reaction pathway of NOx absorption and conversion was developed based on the experimental results. NOx absorption is thought to involve two types of absorption pathways, namely, pure NO2 absorption and simultaneous NO and NO2 absorption. A positive correlation was found between CaCO3 concentration and NO2 absorption rate, and the best molar ratio of NO2/NOx in gas stream for NO absorption was 0.5. The main NOx absorption products were NO2- and NO3-. NO2- inhibits further NOx absorption and could be partially decomposed with release of NO, while NO3- has no obvious effect on NOx absorption. Nitrite can also be converted into nitrate through a reaction with dissolved oxygen. Addition of SO2 provides another NOx absorption pathway due to the reaction between S(IV) and NOx, which indicates the feasibility of simultaneously removing SO2 and NOx by wet scrubbing. Abstract:Oxy-fuel circulating fluidized bed combustion is known as one of the most potent fuel combustion technologies that capture ultra-low greenhouse gases and pollutant emissions. While many investigations have been conducted for carbon capturing, the associated in-situ desulfurization process using calcium-based sorbents should also be underlined. This paper critically reviews the effects of changes in the operating environment on in-situ desulfurization processes compared to conventional air combustion. A comprehensive understanding of the process, encompassing hydrodynamic, physical and chemical aspects can be a guideline for designing the oxy-fuel combustion process with effective sulfur removal, potentially eliminating the need of a flue gas desulfurization unit. Results from thermogravimetric analyzers and morphological changes of calcium-based materials were presented to offer an insight into the sulfation mechanisms involved in the oxy-fuel circulating fluidized beds. Recently findings suggested that in-situ direct desulfurization is influenced not only by the desulfurization kinetics but also by the fluidization characteristics of calcium-based materials. Therefore, a complex reaction analysis that incorporated oxy-combustion reactions, computational fluid dynamics modeling, in-situ desulfurization reaction models and particle behavior can provide a thorough understanding of desulfurization processes across the reactor. Meanwhile, machine learning as a robust tool to predict desulfurization efficiency and improve operational flexibility should be applied with consideration of environmental improvement and economic feasibility.

Abstract:In the paper, the reaction of CaO-HF and fluorine removal mechanics at high temperature by blending calcium-based sorbents with coal during coal combustion were discussed, and test results about fluorine retention during coal combustion in fluidized bed and chain-grate furnace were reported. The results identified that lime and calcium-based sorbets developed can restratin the emission of fluorine during coal combustion. The efficiency of fluorine removal can reach 66.7%-70.0% at Ca/F 60-70 by blending lime with coal in fluidized bed combustion, and the efficiency of fluorine removal are between 57.32% and 75.19% by blending calcium-based sorbets with coal in chain-grate furnace combustion. Blending CaO or lime with coal during coal combustion can remove SO2 and HF simultaneously.
