Abstract:Landing on surface of planet is the most direct and effective means of deep space exploration. Taking the picture of lander and surrounding environment can monitor the working status of the lander, and different exploration tasks arranged different imaging methods. Apollo 11 achieved manned lunar landing, so astronauts leaved lunar lander and installed imaging camera; Curiosity rover is equipped MAHLI (Mars Hand Lens Imager) at the end of the robot arm, and capture the own image of the rover; Chang'E-3 consists of lander and rover, which can captured image each other. In this paper, taking into account the working conditions without rover, we designed an ejection-style self-imaging apparatus for lunar lander, which consists of the optical imaging system, the tumbler structure body and the ejector body. Ejector body is mounted on the lunar lander to eject the imaging system to the appropriate distance. To make the image of lander in the center field of view, the imaging system needs to be installed on a tumbler structure body to ensure that the optical axis of imaging system can be adjusted to the direction toward the lander. We designed and developed the imaging optical system, the mechanical structure of tumbler body and ejector body, deduced reasonable compression spiral spring parameter according to the application requirements, and completed finite element analysis of tumbler structure body in the fall process. The experiments on the sand, soil and gravel ground verify the feasibility of the design scheme.

Abstract:Lunar exploration is deemed crucial for uncovering the origins of the Earth-Moon system and is the first step for advancing humanity's exploration of deep space. Over the past decade, the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program (CLEP), also known as the Chang'e (CE) Project, has achieved remarkable milestones. It has successfully developed and demonstrated the engineering capability required to reach and return from the lunar surface. Notably, the CE Project has made historic firsts with the landing and on-site exploration of the far side of the Moon, along with the collection of the youngest volcanic samples from the Procellarum KREEP Terrane. These achievements have significantly enhanced our understanding of lunar evolution. Building on this success, China has proposed an ambitious crewed lunar exploration strategy, aiming to return to the Moon for scientific exploration and utilization. This plan encompasses two primary phases: the first crewed lunar landing and exploration, followed by a thousand-kilometer scale scientific expedition to construct a geological cross-section across the lunar surface. Recognizing the limitations of current lunar exploration efforts and China's engineering and technical capabilities, this paper explores the benefits of crewed lunar exploration while leveraging synergies with robotic exploration. The study refines fundamental lunar scientific questions that could lead to significant breakthroughs, considering the respective engineering and technological requirements. This research lays a crucial foundation for defining the objectives of future lunar exploration, emphasizing the importance of crewed missions and offering insights into potential advancements in lunar science.

Fifty years ago, my older brother and I watched the Apollo 11 mission from India, sharing a worldwide sense of pride. The legacy of Apollo continues, with technological and medical benefits ([ 1 ][3]). It has inspired a new generation to think big and take great risks. Fifty years later, I watched Chandrayaan-2, India's lunar exploration mission, from the United States, connected to my brother by the internet though thousands of miles apart. The latest Moon mission provides a cause for celebration.The public's exposure to advances in science, medicine, and engineering continues on many fronts. Fifty years ago, it was a luxury for a country to perform space exploration; now a private Moon lander is the buzz ([ 2 ][4]). A society may survive on its earthly activities, but it thrives on the human imagination that has given us rockets, satellites, and a continued search for knowledge. The Chandrayaan-2 mission drives a change in India that was initiated by the Apollo mission so many years ago.Space exploration spurs global creativity, including China's successful Chang'E-4 landing on the far side of Moon ([ 3 ][5]) and the bold attempt of the Israeli spacecraft Beresheet ([ 4 ][6]). Abstract:In the frame of the recent worldwide activities of Lunar research, including various studies for surface stations, the aspect of longevity of such stations has been identified as a particular technical challenge. The reason for this lies in the long (about 14 days) and cold Lunar night during which it is non-trivial to keep spacecraft systems alive and sensitive equipment within an acceptable temperature range.The following paper analyzes and compares various concepts to survive Lunar night, both with and without radioisotope heater technology.The latter normally implies the use of highly toxic material (typically plutonium), which is politically problematic and a driver for cost and safety procedures.Concepts without radioisotope heating need to foresee special measures, like extremely efficient thermal insulation or sub-surface positioning of all temperature sensitive components.Special emphasis has been taken on the thermal analysis of a penetrator-type surface station. The relevant issues are discussed and results for day–night cycles are presented, assuming a typical set of engineering parameters. This concept appears to be the easiest to implement from a thermal point of view, if the use of radioisotope heaters has to be avoided.

Abstract:Abstract Technology advancement in modern planetary exploration has extended extraterrestrial geological science by sending rovers on challenging, possibly risky but highly scientific-valuable ventures, such as ascending towards the crater walls, traversing steep slopes of sand dunes and travelling through the lava tube. On the 41st lunar day, the first lunar farside prospector, the Yutu-2 rover, carried out an exciting expedition towards a scientifically interesting fin-shaped rock for spectral investigation, taking a high risk of wheel skidding and lateral slippage along a narrow and uneven passage. The rover successfully achieved new findings by extending its locomotion margin on perilous peaks, while its safety was maintained on the basis of ingenious exploration strategies and digital twin-based performance analysis. Surface morphology analysis of the fin-shaped rock indicates that it has suffered certain degrees of impacts. The further in situ spectral investigations suggest that the target rock is composed of Fe/Mg-rich low-Ca pyroxene, thus inferred to belongs to the Zhinyu crater ejecta, rather than those of the Finsen crater. Engineering locomotive data of the rover was used for comprehensive lunar regolith property identification, presenting the first shear parameter range of the farside regolith and an initial estimation on its lateral property in the extraterrestrial environment. The estimated internal friction angle is within 21.5°-42.0° and the associated cohesion is 520-3154 Pa, which suggests that the lunar regolith at Chang’E-4 site had similar shear characteristics to samples measured by direct shear approach on the Apollo 12 mission, but relatively larger cohesion than the counterpart investigated on most of nearside lunar missions. This study demonstrates a paradigm of the in-depth integration of science and technology in space exploration, where planetary science is enabled by engineering support, and new demands of scientific exploration in turn generate motivation for the improvement of technology.

Abstract:The lunar nearside has been investigated by many uncrewed and crewed missions, but the farside of the Moon remains poorly known. Lunar farside exploration is challenging because maneuvering rovers with efficient locomotion in harsh extraterrestrial environment is necessary to explore geological characteristics of scientific interest. Chang’E-4 mission successfully targeted the Moon’s farside and deployed a teleoperated rover (Yutu-2) to explore inside the Von Kármán crater, conveying rich information regarding regolith, craters, and rocks. Here, we report mobile exploration on the lunar farside with Yutu-2 over the initial 2 years. During its journey, Yutu-2 has experienced varying degrees of mild slip and skid, indicating that the terrain is relatively flat at large scales but scattered with local gentle slopes. Cloddy soil sticking on its wheels implies a greater cohesion of the lunar soil than encountered at other lunar landing sites. Further identification results indicate that the regolith resembles dry sand and sandy loam on Earth in bearing properties, demonstrating greater bearing strength than that identified during the Apollo missions. In sharp contrast to the sparsity of rocks along the traverse route, small fresh craters with unilateral moldable ejecta are abundant, and some of them contain high-reflectance materials at the bottom, suggestive of secondary impact events. These findings hint at notable differences in the surface geology between the lunar farside and nearside. Experience gained with Yutu-2 improves the understanding of the farside of the Moon, which, in return, may lead to locomotion with improved efficiency and larger range.

Abstract:The target landing site for Chang' e-1 mission is the rugged area of South Pole-Aitken(SPA) basin, which is located on the farside of the moon. There arc many craters densely distributed in the SPA basin, the uneven topography will result in high risk of sunlight and communication shield when the lander works on lunar surface. Communication and sunlight shield was analyzed. Then, the solution to reduce the lander's survival risk generated by the shielding was presented in three aspects: to increase the landing precision by optimizing the trajectory control strategy, to optimize the lunar surface operating programme, as well as to add the function of the lander' s autonomus management. The solution has been used in the Chang ' e-1 probe successfully, providing reference for future deep space exploration missions.

Abstract:Yutu-2 rover conducted an exciting expedition on the 41st lunar day to investigate a fin-shaped rock at Longji site (45.44°S, 177.56°E) by extending its locomotion margin on perilous peaks. The varied locomotion encountered, especially multi-form wheel slippage, during the journey to the target rock, established unique conditions for a fin-grained lunar regolith analysis regarding bearing, shear and lateral properties based on terramechanics. Here, we show a tri-aspect characterization of lunar regolith and infer the rock’s origin using a digital twin. We estimate internal friction angle within 21.5°−42.0° and associated cohesion of 520-3154 Pa in the Chang’E-4 operational site. These findings suggest shear characteristics similar to Apollo 12 mission samples but notably higher cohesion compared to regolith investigated on most nearside lunar missions. We estimate external friction angle in lateral properties to be within 8.3°−16.5°, which fills the gaps of the lateral property estimation of the lunar farside regolith and serves as a foundational parameter for subsequent engineering verifications. Our in-situ spectral investigations of the target rock unveil its composition of iron/magnesium-rich low-calcium pyroxene, linking it to the Zhinyu crater (45.34°S, 176.15°E) ejecta. Our results indicate that the combination of in-situ measurements with robotics technology in planetary exploration reveal the possibility of additional source regions contributing to the local materials at the Chang’E-4 site, implying a more complicated geological history in the vicinity.
