Abstract:With the mission's completion, India became only the fourth nation in history to successfully perform a soft landing on the Moon and the first nation to land a spacecraft close to the lunar south pole. The purpose of the article is to present a comprehensive review of the Chandrayaan-3 mission (a sequel operation to Chandrayaan-2) to demonstrate complete capabilities in secure lunar landing and exploration on the Moon's surface. It is equipped with a Vikram lander and Pragyan rover. An in-depth review is carried out to discuss the findings of the Chandrayaan-3 mission. The goals of Chandrayaan-3's mission are: (a) to show a safe and soft landing on the surface of the Moon; (b) to showcase roving lunar rover technology; and (c) to carry out in-situ scientific research. The goals are achieved through the lander payloads, which include the Langmuir Probe (LP), Chandra's Surface Thermophysical Experiment (ChaSTE), Instrument for Lunar Seismic Activity (ILSA), and Chandra's Surface Thermophysical Experiment (ChaSTE) to measure thermal conductivity and temperature. For lunar laser-ranging investigations, the space agency NASA has provided a passive Laser Retroreflector Array. The Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) and the Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscope (LIBS) are rover payloads that were used to determine the elemental composition close to the landing site. The mission goals are highly accomplished with the successful hop experiment of Vikram on the Chandrayaan-3 mission! As ordered, it raised itself to a height of around 40 cm, turned on its engines, and then made a safe landing between 30 and 40 cm away. To put an end to the controversy, the study finishes with highlights on (a) the significant area of the southernmost polar region of the Moon with latitudes ranging from 60 to 90°S and (b) Shiv Shakti point (coordinates 69.373°S 32.319°E).

Abstract:The Earth's moon is currently an object of interest of many space agencies for unmanned robotic missions within this decade. Besides future prospects for building lunar gateways as support to human space flight, the Moon is an attractive location for scientific purposes. Not only will its study give insight on the foundations of the Solar System but also its location, uncontaminated by the Earth's ionosphere, represents a vantage point for the observation of the Sun and planetary bodies outside the Solar System. Lunar exploration has been traditionally conducted by means of single-agent robotic assets, which is a limiting factor for the return of scientific missions. The German Aerospace Center (DLR) is developing fundamental technologies towards increased autonomy of robotic explorers to fulfil more complex mission tasks through cooperation. This paper presents an overview of past, present and future activities of DLR towards highly autonomous systems for scientific missions targeting the Moon and other planetary bodies. The heritage from the Mobile Asteroid Scout (MASCOT), developed jointly by DLR and CNES and deployed on asteroid Ryugu on 3 October 2018 from JAXA's Hayabusa2 spacecraft, inspired the development of novel core technologies towards higher efficiency in planetary exploration. Together with the lessons learnt from the ROBEX project (2012–2017), where a mobile robot autonomously deployed seismic sensors at a Moon analogue site, this experience is shaping the future steps towards more complex space missions. They include the development of a mobile rover for JAXA's Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) in 2024 as well as demonstrations of novel multi-robot technologies at a Moon analogue site on the volcano Mt Etna in the ARCHES project. Within ARCHES, a demonstration mission is planned from the 14 June to 10 July 2021, 1 during which heterogeneous teams of robots will autonomously conduct geological and mineralogical analysis experiments and deploy an array of low-frequency antennas to measure Jovian and solar bursts. Fifty years ago, my older brother and I watched the Apollo 11 mission from India, sharing a worldwide sense of pride. The legacy of Apollo continues, with technological and medical benefits ([ 1 ][3]). It has inspired a new generation to think big and take great risks. Fifty years later, I watched Chandrayaan-2, India's lunar exploration mission, from the United States, connected to my brother by the internet though thousands of miles apart. The latest Moon mission provides a cause for celebration.The public's exposure to advances in science, medicine, and engineering continues on many fronts. Fifty years ago, it was a luxury for a country to perform space exploration; now a private Moon lander is the buzz ([ 2 ][4]). A society may survive on its earthly activities, but it thrives on the human imagination that has given us rockets, satellites, and a continued search for knowledge. The Chandrayaan-2 mission drives a change in India that was initiated by the Apollo mission so many years ago.Space exploration spurs global creativity, including China's successful Chang'E-4 landing on the far side of Moon ([ 3 ][5]) and the bold attempt of the Israeli spacecraft Beresheet ([ 4 ][6]). Science can transcend time and distance to unite people and nurture their imaginations. If agencies like the Indian Space Research Organisation and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration worked together, along with China and private companies, another Moon journey would be possible. Abstract:The Moon presents unique opportunities for high-impact astronomy that could enhance our understanding of our solar system, the possibility of life beyond Earth, and the evolution of the universe. A handful of locations on the lunar surface are ‘sites of extraordinary scientific importance’ (SESIs) for such studies, presenting opportunities for astronomical research unmatched anywhere else. For instance, the farside of the Moon, the most radio-quiet location in the inner solar system, could allow for the emplacement of telescopes to study the cosmic Dark Ages in ways that are impossible elsewhere. However, we are also on the cusp of a broader lunar renaissance. A flurry of upcoming missions, both scientific and non-scientific, will target some of these very same sites and threatens to degrade their value to science. Protecting these sites is an urgent matter. Two major international efforts to create rules for activities on the Moon are afoot, but so far neither emphasizes protecting SESIs. To safeguard the exceptional scientific opportunities on the Moon, astronomers should engage these international rulemaking efforts and steer them towards ensuring the preservation of SESIs for research and discovery. We propose elements of a programme of action to adopt during a crucial, but closing, window. This article is part of a discussion meeting issue ‘Astronomy from the Moon: the next decades (part 2)’.

Abstract:Many plans are in preparation to land robotic missions on the surface of the Moon, which will pave the way to return humans to the lunar surface and set the stage for an ongoing human presence. Artemis is a NASA-led international effort to return humans to the Moon. One of the goals of Artemis is to use innovative technologies to address priority science objectives. At the same time, the European Space Agency (ESA) is exploring designs for a Moon base to enable ongoing human activity on the lunar surface. Furthermore, China plans to land humans on the Moon by 2030. In situ resource utilization ( ISRU )—the extraction of useful materials from the Moon itself—will be beneficial for efforts to sustain a human presence. ISRU could provide water that can be used by astronauts or split into hydrogen and oxygen rocket fuel for returning to Earth or moving onward to Mars, along with other vital resources. Although this possibility is exciting, it is critical that we recognize how human and robotic activity will affect the lunar environment . Not having a global strategy to characterize lunar volatile materials before their scientific value is lost will substantially degrade the Moon's scientific potential.

Abstract:China's Chang'e-4 (CE-4) mission is the first human lander/rover mission on the far side of the Moon. Its probe is composed of a lander, rover, and the Queqiao relay satellite. Queqiao was successfully launched on May 21, 2018, and entered the halo orbit of the L2 point on June 14, becoming the first satellite connecting the Earth and the Moon's far side. The lander carrying Yutu-2 was successfully launched on December 8, 2018, and landed in the Von Kármán crater (45.5° S, 177.6° E) at 10:26 (UTC+8) on January 3, 2019. The CE-4 probe carried nine science instruments. Four instruments are on the lander: a landing camera (LCAM), a terrain camera (TCAM), a low-frequency radio spectrometer (LFRS), and a lunar lander neutrons and dosimetry (LND) provided by Germany. Four instruments are on the rover: a panoramic camera (PCAM), a visible and near-infrared imaging spectrometer (VNIS), a lunar penetrating radar (LPR), and an advanced small analyzer for neutrals (ASAN) provided by Sweden. The instrument on the relay satellite is the Netherlands-China Low-Frequency Explorer (NCLE). The scientific objectives of the CE-4 mission include (1) performing low-frequency radio-astronomical observations; (2) investigating the geomorphology, mineral compositions and shallow subsurface structure of the landing and roving sites; and (3) detecting the Earth-Moon space environment at the lunar far side. As of February 1, 2020, CE-4 has completed 14 lunar days of scientific exploration after one year of operation. The components, fight, scientific objectives and investigation of CE-4 are introduced in this paper. We also describe the accessibility of the initial archived science data and their preliminary analysis results.

An analogy would be the way in which human outposts in Antarctica facilitate research activities across multiple scientific disciplines on that continent.
