Abstract:Research on returned samples can provide ground truth for the study of the geological evolution history of the Moon. However, previous missions all collected samples from the near side of the Moon, which is significantly different from the far side of the Moon in terms of the thickness of the lunar crust, magma activity, and composition. Therefore, the samples from the far side of the Moon are of great significance for a comprehensive understanding of the history of the Moon. China's Chang'e-6 (CE-6) probe has successfully landed on the lunar far side and will return samples in the coming days. With the precise location of the CE-6 landing site, a detailed analysis of the geological background is conducted in this research. The landing site of CE-6 is within the Apollo crater, which is inside the largest impact basin on the Moon, i.e., the South Pole-Aitken (SPA) basin. According to the numerical simulation of the formation process of the SPA basin, CE-6 landed at the edge of the SPA impact melting zone, which is presumably composed of impact melt of the lunar mantle. The Apollo crater subsequently excavated deep material again, which constitutes the basement of the CE-6 landing area. Later, erupted basalt covered these basement rocks, and they also constitute the main source of the CE-6 samples. Based on the dating method of crater size-frequency distribution, we find that the basalt is ∼2.50 Ga. The CE-6 samples also possibly contain basement rocks as excavated and ejected by craters, and they can provide crucial information for our understanding of lunar geological history along with the basalt samples.

Abstract:The Chang'E-6 (CE-6) mission successfully achieved return of the first samples from the far side of the Moon. The sampling site of CE-6 is located in the South Pole-Aitken (SPA) basin-the largest, deepest and oldest impact basin on the Moon. The 1935.3 g of CE-6 lunar samples exhibit distinct characteristics compared with previous lunar samples. This study analyses the physical, mineralogical, petrographic and geochemical properties of CE-6 lunar scooped samples. The CE-6 soil has a significantly lower bulk density (0.983 g/cm3) and true density (3.035 g/cm3) than the Chang'E-5 (CE-5) samples. The grain size of the CE-6 soil exhibits a bimodal distribution, indicating a mixture of different compositions. Mineralogically, the CE-6 soil consists of 32.6% plagioclase (anorthite and bytownite), 19.7% augite, 10% pigeonite and 3.6% orthopyroxene, and with low content of olivine (0.5%) but high content of amorphous glass (29.4%). Geochemically, the bulk composition of CE-6 soil is rich in Al2O3 (14%) and CaO (12%) but low in FeO (17%), and trace elements of CE-6 soil such as K (∼630 ppm), U (0.26 ppm), Th (0.92 ppm) and rare-earth elements are significantly lower than those of the lunar soils within the Procellarum KREEP Terrane. The local basalts are characterized by low-Ti (TiO2, 5.08%), low-Al (Al2O3 9.85%) and low-K (∼830 ppm), features suggesting that the CE-6 soil is a mixture of local basalts and non-basaltic ejecta. The returned CE-6 sample contains diverse lithic fragments, including local mare basalt, breccia, agglutinate, glasses and leucocrate. These local mare basalts document the volcanic history of the lunar far side, while the non-basaltic fragments may offer critical insights into the lunar highland crust, SPA impact melts and potentially the deep lunar mantle, making these samples highly significant for scientific research.

Abstract:Extraterrestrial materials collected by sample return exploration missions have advanced our understanding of planetary formation and evolution in a profound manner. This is achieved through sophisticated laboratory sample analyses with very high precision and accuracy that are difficult to obtained by orbital or surface landing/roving explorations. Moreover, the well-known geographical location and geological context of returned samples enable the sample measurements to be fully interpreted and mapped into the entire planetary context (in contrast to meteorites where the geological context is missing). Planetary scientists have been endeavoring to collect and returned samples from extraterrestrial bodies, despite the significant costs involved.In December 2020, China's Chang'e-5 mission successfully landed in and returned lunar samples from the northeastern Oceanus Procellarum in the western lunar nearside maria. The mare basalt at the landing site has been dated to be ~1–2 Ga through crater population studies, much younger than any basalts in the present lunar sample collections and among the youngest maria on the global Moon (e.g., Hiesinger et al., 2011). The Chang'e-5 sample will provide an unprecedented opportunity to characterize the late-stage lunar volcanism.To fully explore the scientific potential of the Chang'e-5 returned samples and assist the on-going sample analyses and interpretations, we present an in-depth investigation of the geology of the specific Chang'e-5 landing site and the nearby vicinity using high-resolution remote sensing data sets. We characterize the detailed geological context, topography, morphology, morphometry, chemical and mineralogical composition of the local landing area. These geological characterizations lead us to identify a sequence of four geological events, including mare volcanism, tectonism, impact cratering and ejecta deposition, that have potentially affected and been recorded in the returned samples. Compositional and geochronological measurements of the Chang'e-5 samples would reconstruct a detailed regional geological evolution model of the landing area. Furthermore, most of the inferred ages of these geological events lie in the age gap of the Apollo/Luna samples. Precise determination of these ages through radiogenic isotope analyses would be invaluable in narrowing down the uncertainties of the lunar cratering chronology function and improve our understanding of the geological history of the entire Moon.

Abstract:China's Chang'e-5 (CE-5) mission, the first lunar sample return mission since 1976, landed at 43.06°N, 51.92°W on Dec. 1, 2020, in Northern Oceanus Procellarum. CE-5 targeted a mare plain (Em4/P58) composed of distinctive young (∼1.6-1.7 Ga) moderate-Ti mare basalts, with elevated Th abundance (inherent or extraneous). Thus, the regolith and rock fragments sampled by CE-5 come from some of the youngest mare basalts on the Moon, near Rima Sharp, and from the center of the globally anomalous Procellarum KREEP Terrane (PKT), hypothesized to be responsible for the generation of the young volcanism. To provide context for the analysis and interpretation of the returned samples and in-situ measurements of the regolith substructure with penetrating radar, we constructed a detailed geologic map and stratigraphic assessment of the site. The stratigraphy consists of ancient highland materials (PKT crust and ejecta from Iridum and Imbrium basins), local silica-rich volcanism, overlain by a sequence of mare basalts, capped with Em4/P58. A ∼4-7 m thick regolith layer developed by post-mare bombardment overlies the Em4/P58 protolith and contains admixed impact ejecta from distant sources, mainly from Harpalus (∼6 wt.%), followed by Copernicus (∼2 wt.%) and Aristarchus (∼1 wt.%). New crater size-frequency measurements of Em4/P58 provide the necessary crater spatial density reference for calibration of the lunar cratering chronology with radiometric ages of the returned samples. The geological map and assessment of regolith provenance indicate that samples returned by CE-5 will address fundamental questions in lunar chronology, thermal evolution, basalt petrogenesis, and the nature of PKT, as well as provide key calibration for lunar and planetary chronologies and remote sensing data.

Abstract:Remote sensing observations have shown that the far side of the Moon (lunar farside) has different geology and rock composition to the near side, including the abundances of potassium, rare earth elements, and phosphorus (collectively known as KREEP). The Chang'e-6 (CE-6) spacecraft collected samples from the South Pole-Aitken (SPA) basin on the farside and brought them to Earth. We use lead-lead and rubidium-strontium isotope systems to date low-titanium basalt in a CE-6 sample, finding a consistent age of 2830 ± 5 million years. We interpret this as the date of volcanism in SPA and incorporate it into lunar crater chronology. Strontium, neodymium and lead isotopes indicate the volcanic magma was from a lunar mantle source depleted in incompatible elements and containing almost no KREEP component.

Abstract:China's Chang'e-4 (CE-4) mission is the first human lander/rover mission on the far side of the Moon. Its probe is composed of a lander, rover, and the Queqiao relay satellite. Queqiao was successfully launched on May 21, 2018, and entered the halo orbit of the L2 point on June 14, becoming the first satellite connecting the Earth and the Moon's far side. The lander carrying Yutu-2 was successfully launched on December 8, 2018, and landed in the Von Kármán crater (45.5° S, 177.6° E) at 10:26 (UTC+8) on January 3, 2019. The CE-4 probe carried nine science instruments. Four instruments are on the lander: a landing camera (LCAM), a terrain camera (TCAM), a low-frequency radio spectrometer (LFRS), and a lunar lander neutrons and dosimetry (LND) provided by Germany. Four instruments are on the rover: a panoramic camera (PCAM), a visible and near-infrared imaging spectrometer (VNIS), a lunar penetrating radar (LPR), and an advanced small analyzer for neutrals (ASAN) provided by Sweden. The instrument on the relay satellite is the Netherlands-China Low-Frequency Explorer (NCLE). The scientific objectives of the CE-4 mission include (1) performing low-frequency radio-astronomical observations; (2) investigating the geomorphology, mineral compositions and shallow subsurface structure of the landing and roving sites; and (3) detecting the Earth-Moon space environment at the lunar far side. As of February 1, 2020, CE-4 has completed 14 lunar days of scientific exploration after one year of operation. The components, fight, scientific objectives and investigation of CE-4 are introduced in this paper. We also describe the accessibility of the initial archived science data and their preliminary analysis results.

Abstract:Abstract Technology advancement in modern planetary exploration has extended extraterrestrial geological science by sending rovers on challenging, possibly risky but highly scientific-valuable ventures, such as ascending towards the crater walls, traversing steep slopes of sand dunes and travelling through the lava tube. On the 41st lunar day, the first lunar farside prospector, the Yutu-2 rover, carried out an exciting expedition towards a scientifically interesting fin-shaped rock for spectral investigation, taking a high risk of wheel skidding and lateral slippage along a narrow and uneven passage. The rover successfully achieved new findings by extending its locomotion margin on perilous peaks, while its safety was maintained on the basis of ingenious exploration strategies and digital twin-based performance analysis. Surface morphology analysis of the fin-shaped rock indicates that it has suffered certain degrees of impacts. The further in situ spectral investigations suggest that the target rock is composed of Fe/Mg-rich low-Ca pyroxene, thus inferred to belongs to the Zhinyu crater ejecta, rather than those of the Finsen crater. Engineering locomotive data of the rover was used for comprehensive lunar regolith property identification, presenting the first shear parameter range of the farside regolith and an initial estimation on its lateral property in the extraterrestrial environment. The estimated internal friction angle is within 21.5°-42.0° and the associated cohesion is 520-3154 Pa, which suggests that the lunar regolith at Chang’E-4 site had similar shear characteristics to samples measured by direct shear approach on the Apollo 12 mission, but relatively larger cohesion than the counterpart investigated on most of nearside lunar missions. This study demonstrates a paradigm of the in-depth integration of science and technology in space exploration, where planetary science is enabled by engineering support, and new demands of scientific exploration in turn generate motivation for the improvement of technology.

Abstract:To address questions about the multiple lunar nearside–farside dichotomies and to provide new insights into both the early impact history of the Solar System and the geological evolution of the Moon, the Chang'e-6 (CE-6) landing zone has been selected to lie within the lunar farside South Pole–Aitken (SPA) basin in the southern part of the Apollo basin (150–158° W, 41–45° S), a site that provides access to a diversity of SPA material. Here, we describe the geomorphology, geology and chronology of three candidate sampling sites within this zone that are likely to ensure safe landing and sampling. The geological characteristics indicate that CE-6 is expected to collect lunar farside SPA ejecta fragments, possible mantle material and young (roughly 2.40 Gyr-year-old) and/or old (roughly 3.43 Gyr-year-old) basaltic material, all of which will provide important guidance for future in situ farside sample collection and deepen our understanding of the evolution of the Moon.

Abstract:China's Chang'e‐6 (CE‐6) mission has returned the first‐ever lunar farside samples from a mare plain on the southern Apollo basin floor. The crater statistics of the CE‐6 mare unit and the provenance of the samples are crucial in interpreting the CE‐6 sample analysis results and re‐calibrating the crater chronology function. Here, we conduct a thorough survey of the formation sequence and main source craters of ejecta materials at the sampling area. Our results show that the sampling mare unit has a model age of ∼2.8 Ga and the CE‐6 scooped and drilled samples mainly come from the proximal ejecta of nearby small craters and the local regolith. The total abundance of foreign (non‐mare) materials, primarily from Chaffee S and Vavilov craters, is ∼9.3%. The Chaffee S ejecta may contain lunar upper mantle materials previously excavated by the South Pole‐Aitken impact, which will shed light on the materials of the Moon's interior.

Abstract:Lunar igneous activities, including intrusive magmatism and extrusive volcanism, and their products contain significant information about the lunar interior and its thermal state. Their distribution is asymmetrical on the nearside and farside, reflecting the global dichotomy. Samples from the South Pole–Aitken (SPA) basin on the farside hold the key to disclosing the dichotomy conundrum and rebalancing the asymmetrical understandings of the Moon, in addition to previously returned nearside samples (Apollo, Luna, Chang'e-5). For the first time, the Chang'e-6 mission obtained ∼1935.5 g of lunar soils from the farside in the southern Apollo basin, northeast of SPA, opening a window to solve this long-standing question. However, compared with the well-known mare/cryptomare volcanism in SPA, intrusive activity has a much more obscure presence and origin, due to its unclear surface expression, thus impeding the ongoing Chang'e-6 sample analysis, which is therefore emphasized here. We found evidence that intrusive magmatism is extensive across SPA, including Mg-suite intrusions, floor-modified craters, and linear/ring dikes, consistent with its intermediate crustal thickness, where dike intrusion is favored. Intrusive magmatism is abundant in the Apollo basin, where Chang'e-6 landed. Two obscure craters were discovered (Apollo X and Q) with evidence for subsurface intrusions, strongly suggesting the intensive intrusion in the region. Plutonic materials are very likely to be obtained by Chang'e-6, especially the Mg-suite from the western peak ring of the Apollo basin that delivered and mixed in the soils by the Chaffee S crater, whose components might provide critical new insights into their petrogenesis, early lunar evolution, and the origin of dichotomy.

Abstract:The samples from lunar farside have great significance for the study of the Moon, and even the solar system. Chang'e-6 landed successfully on the southern mare of the Apollo basin and returned ~2 kg of samples from lunar farside. To provide a better understanding for the background of the returned samples, we conducted detailed crater size-frequency distribution (CSFD) measurements in the Chang'e-6 landing region, the southern mare of the Apollo basin. The southern mare is divided into the western mare (W region) and the eastern mare (E region), and then subdivided into five subunits (W1, W2, W3, W4, W5) and three units (E1, E2, E3), respectively, according to the elevation, TiO2, and FeO abundances. Within the W2 and W5 region, more detailed subunits were separated out. The results show that the southern mare surface was active during two epochs, the Imbrian period and the Eratosthenian period. The basalt eruption lasted for ~1.7 Ga, from 3.28 Ga of the eastern mare to 1.54 Ga of the western mare. The W region is younger than the E region, while the three units of the E region have an age of ~3.2 Ga. The ages of the western mare basalts range from 2.98 Ga to 1.54 Ga, lasting for 1.4 Ga. It is worth noting that the age of the basalt at the Chang'e-6 sampling site is ~1.68 Ga, indicating the samples returned may include components with this very young age.

Abstract:The Chinese lunar probe Chang'E-4 successfully landed in the Von Kármán crater on the far side of the Moon. This paper presents the topographic and geomorphological mapping and their joint analysis for selecting the Chang'E-4 landing site in the Von Kármán crater. A digital topographic model (DTM) of the Von Kármán crater, with a spatial resolution of 30 m, was generated through the integrated processing of Chang'E-2 images (7 m/pixel) and Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) Laser Altimeter (LOLA) data. Slope maps were derived from the DTM. Terrain occlusions to both the Sun and the relay satellite were studied. Craters with diameters ≥ 70 m were detected to generate a crater density map. Rocks with diameters ≥ 2 m were also extracted to generate a rock abundance map using an LRO narrow angle camera (NAC) image mosaic. The joint topographic and geomorphological analysis identified three subregions for landing. One of them, recommended as the highest-priority landing site, was the one in which Chang'E-4 eventually landed. After the successful landing of Chang'E-4, we immediately determined the precise location of the lander by the integrated processing of orbiter, descent and ground images. We also conducted a detailed analysis around the landing location. The results revealed that the Chang'E-4 lander has excellent visibility to the Sun and relay satellite; the lander is on a slope of about 4.5° towards the southwest, and the rock abundance around the landing location is almost 0. The developed methods and results can benefit future soft-landing missions to the Moon and other celestial bodies.

Abstract:The Chinese spacecraft Chang'e-5 (CE-5) landed on the northern Ocean Procellarum and returned 1,731 grams of regolith. The CE-5 regolith is composed mostly of fragments of basalt, impact glass, agglutinates, and mineral fragments. The basalts could be classified as of a low-Ti and highly fractionated type based on their TiO 2 content of ∼5.3 wt% and Mg# of ∼28. Independent of petrographic texture, the CE-5 basalts have a uniform eruption age of 2,030 ± 4 Ma, demonstrating that the Moon remained volcanically active until at least ∼2.0 Ga. Although the CE-5 landing site lies within the so-called Procellarum KREEP [potassium (K), rare earth elements (REE), and phosphorus (P)] Terrane, neither the CE-5 basalts nor the mantle source regions of those basalts were enriched in KREEP components, such as incompatible elements, water, sulfur, or chlorine. Therefore, it would be a new and stimulating task in the future to look for the triggering mechanism of the young volcanism on the Moon. ▪ The CE-5 spacecraft returned 1,731 grams of lunar regolith in December 2020. It was the first new lunar sample since the last collection in August 1976. ▪ CE-5 regolith is basaltic in chemical composition, with only ∼1% highland materials of anorthosite, Mg suite, alkali suite, and KREEP. ▪ The CE-5 basalt is low Ti and highly differentiated. It was extruded at ∼2.0 Ga, being the youngest lunar basalt identified so far from the Moon. ▪ The triggering mechanism of the ∼2.0 Ga lunar volcanism is not clearly understood because its mantle source was dry and contained low abundances of KREEP elements. Abstract:Yutu-2 rover conducted an exciting expedition on the 41st lunar day to investigate a fin-shaped rock at Longji site (45.44°S, 177.56°E) by extending its locomotion margin on perilous peaks. The varied locomotion encountered, especially multi-form wheel slippage, during the journey to the target rock, established unique conditions for a fin-grained lunar regolith analysis regarding bearing, shear and lateral properties based on terramechanics. Here, we show a tri-aspect characterization of lunar regolith and infer the rock’s origin using a digital twin. We estimate internal friction angle within 21.5°−42.0° and associated cohesion of 520-3154 Pa in the Chang’E-4 operational site. These findings suggest shear characteristics similar to Apollo 12 mission samples but notably higher cohesion compared to regolith investigated on most nearside lunar missions. We estimate external friction angle in lateral properties to be within 8.3°−16.5°, which fills the gaps of the lateral property estimation of the lunar farside regolith and serves as a foundational parameter for subsequent engineering verifications. Our in-situ spectral investigations of the target rock unveil its composition of iron/magnesium-rich low-calcium pyroxene, linking it to the Zhinyu crater (45.34°S, 176.15°E) ejecta. Our results indicate that the combination of in-situ measurements with robotics technology in planetary exploration reveal the possibility of additional source regions contributing to the local materials at the Chang’E-4 site, implying a more complicated geological history in the vicinity.

Abstract:The Chang'E-6 (CE-6) mission, launched by China on 2024 May 3, marks the first successful retrieval of samples from the farside of the Moon, specifically from the southern mare plain of the Apollo basin within the South Pole-Aitken (SPA) Basin. This study aims to provide a comprehensive geological analysis of the Apollo basin, focusing on the Apollo basin materials that CE-6 may have collected. By examining the regional geology, surface mineralogy, thorium (Th) abundance, and crustal thickness, we seek to understand the implications of these materials for the SPA basin's structure and stratigraphic history. We find that the Apollo basin exhibits significant lateral compositional variations, with Mg-rich noritic materials predominantly in the southwestern portion and more feldspathic materials in the northeast, probably due to the fact that the Apollo basin is situated on different structures of the underlying SPA basin. Those Mg-rich materials, likely representing deep lithologies from local lower crust, are associated with low Th abundance, suggesting a KREEP-poor origin. The inclusion of foreign materials in the CE-6 samples increases the complexity while also enhancing their research potential. In addition to the local mare basalts, Mg-rich noritic materials associated with the Apollo basin and Th-rich materials originating from the SPA basin may also have been collected by CE-6. Laboratory research of these diverse lithologies will contribute to unraveling the characteristics of the farside mantle, the geological history of the giant SPA basin, as well as the cause of the substantial asymmetry between the lunar nearside and farside.
