Abstract:Research on returned samples can provide ground truth for the study of the geological evolution history of the Moon. However, previous missions all collected samples from the near side of the Moon, which is significantly different from the far side of the Moon in terms of the thickness of the lunar crust, magma activity, and composition. Therefore, the samples from the far side of the Moon are of great significance for a comprehensive understanding of the history of the Moon. China's Chang'e-6 (CE-6) probe has successfully landed on the lunar far side and will return samples in the coming days. With the precise location of the CE-6 landing site, a detailed analysis of the geological background is conducted in this research. The landing site of CE-6 is within the Apollo crater, which is inside the largest impact basin on the Moon, i.e., the South Pole-Aitken (SPA) basin. According to the numerical simulation of the formation process of the SPA basin, CE-6 landed at the edge of the SPA impact melting zone, which is presumably composed of impact melt of the lunar mantle. The Apollo crater subsequently excavated deep material again, which constitutes the basement of the CE-6 landing area. Later, erupted basalt covered these basement rocks, and they also constitute the main source of the CE-6 samples. Based on the dating method of crater size-frequency distribution, we find that the basalt is ∼2.50 Ga. The CE-6 samples also possibly contain basement rocks as excavated and ejected by craters, and they can provide crucial information for our understanding of lunar geological history along with the basalt samples.

Abstract:China's Chang'e-4 (CE-4) mission is the first human lander/rover mission on the far side of the Moon. Its probe is composed of a lander, rover, and the Queqiao relay satellite. Queqiao was successfully launched on May 21, 2018, and entered the halo orbit of the L2 point on June 14, becoming the first satellite connecting the Earth and the Moon's far side. The lander carrying Yutu-2 was successfully launched on December 8, 2018, and landed in the Von Kármán crater (45.5° S, 177.6° E) at 10:26 (UTC+8) on January 3, 2019. The CE-4 probe carried nine science instruments. Four instruments are on the lander: a landing camera (LCAM), a terrain camera (TCAM), a low-frequency radio spectrometer (LFRS), and a lunar lander neutrons and dosimetry (LND) provided by Germany. Four instruments are on the rover: a panoramic camera (PCAM), a visible and near-infrared imaging spectrometer (VNIS), a lunar penetrating radar (LPR), and an advanced small analyzer for neutrals (ASAN) provided by Sweden. The instrument on the relay satellite is the Netherlands-China Low-Frequency Explorer (NCLE). The scientific objectives of the CE-4 mission include (1) performing low-frequency radio-astronomical observations; (2) investigating the geomorphology, mineral compositions and shallow subsurface structure of the landing and roving sites; and (3) detecting the Earth-Moon space environment at the lunar far side. As of February 1, 2020, CE-4 has completed 14 lunar days of scientific exploration after one year of operation. The components, fight, scientific objectives and investigation of CE-4 are introduced in this paper. We also describe the accessibility of the initial archived science data and their preliminary analysis results.

Abstract:Extraterrestrial materials collected by sample return exploration missions have advanced our understanding of planetary formation and evolution in a profound manner. This is achieved through sophisticated laboratory sample analyses with very high precision and accuracy that are difficult to obtained by orbital or surface landing/roving explorations. Moreover, the well-known geographical location and geological context of returned samples enable the sample measurements to be fully interpreted and mapped into the entire planetary context (in contrast to meteorites where the geological context is missing). Planetary scientists have been endeavoring to collect and returned samples from extraterrestrial bodies, despite the significant costs involved.In December 2020, China's Chang'e-5 mission successfully landed in and returned lunar samples from the northeastern Oceanus Procellarum in the western lunar nearside maria. The mare basalt at the landing site has been dated to be ~1–2 Ga through crater population studies, much younger than any basalts in the present lunar sample collections and among the youngest maria on the global Moon (e.g., Hiesinger et al., 2011). The Chang'e-5 sample will provide an unprecedented opportunity to characterize the late-stage lunar volcanism.To fully explore the scientific potential of the Chang'e-5 returned samples and assist the on-going sample analyses and interpretations, we present an in-depth investigation of the geology of the specific Chang'e-5 landing site and the nearby vicinity using high-resolution remote sensing data sets. We characterize the detailed geological context, topography, morphology, morphometry, chemical and mineralogical composition of the local landing area. These geological characterizations lead us to identify a sequence of four geological events, including mare volcanism, tectonism, impact cratering and ejecta deposition, that have potentially affected and been recorded in the returned samples. Compositional and geochronological measurements of the Chang'e-5 samples would reconstruct a detailed regional geological evolution model of the landing area. Furthermore, most of the inferred ages of these geological events lie in the age gap of the Apollo/Luna samples. Precise determination of these ages through radiogenic isotope analyses would be invaluable in narrowing down the uncertainties of the lunar cratering chronology function and improve our understanding of the geological history of the entire Moon.

Abstract:China's Chang'e-5 (CE-5) mission, the first lunar sample return mission since 1976, landed at 43.06°N, 51.92°W on Dec. 1, 2020, in Northern Oceanus Procellarum. CE-5 targeted a mare plain (Em4/P58) composed of distinctive young (∼1.6-1.7 Ga) moderate-Ti mare basalts, with elevated Th abundance (inherent or extraneous). Thus, the regolith and rock fragments sampled by CE-5 come from some of the youngest mare basalts on the Moon, near Rima Sharp, and from the center of the globally anomalous Procellarum KREEP Terrane (PKT), hypothesized to be responsible for the generation of the young volcanism. To provide context for the analysis and interpretation of the returned samples and in-situ measurements of the regolith substructure with penetrating radar, we constructed a detailed geologic map and stratigraphic assessment of the site. The stratigraphy consists of ancient highland materials (PKT crust and ejecta from Iridum and Imbrium basins), local silica-rich volcanism, overlain by a sequence of mare basalts, capped with Em4/P58. A ∼4-7 m thick regolith layer developed by post-mare bombardment overlies the Em4/P58 protolith and contains admixed impact ejecta from distant sources, mainly from Harpalus (∼6 wt.%), followed by Copernicus (∼2 wt.%) and Aristarchus (∼1 wt.%). New crater size-frequency measurements of Em4/P58 provide the necessary crater spatial density reference for calibration of the lunar cratering chronology with radiometric ages of the returned samples. The geological map and assessment of regolith provenance indicate that samples returned by CE-5 will address fundamental questions in lunar chronology, thermal evolution, basalt petrogenesis, and the nature of PKT, as well as provide key calibration for lunar and planetary chronologies and remote sensing data.

Abstract:The Chang'E-6 (CE-6) mission successfully achieved return of the first samples from the far side of the Moon. The sampling site of CE-6 is located in the South Pole-Aitken (SPA) basin-the largest, deepest and oldest impact basin on the Moon. The 1935.3 g of CE-6 lunar samples exhibit distinct characteristics compared with previous lunar samples. This study analyses the physical, mineralogical, petrographic and geochemical properties of CE-6 lunar scooped samples. The CE-6 soil has a significantly lower bulk density (0.983 g/cm3) and true density (3.035 g/cm3) than the Chang'E-5 (CE-5) samples. The grain size of the CE-6 soil exhibits a bimodal distribution, indicating a mixture of different compositions. Mineralogically, the CE-6 soil consists of 32.6% plagioclase (anorthite and bytownite), 19.7% augite, 10% pigeonite and 3.6% orthopyroxene, and with low content of olivine (0.5%) but high content of amorphous glass (29.4%). Geochemically, the bulk composition of CE-6 soil is rich in Al2O3 (14%) and CaO (12%) but low in FeO (17%), and trace elements of CE-6 soil such as K (∼630 ppm), U (0.26 ppm), Th (0.92 ppm) and rare-earth elements are significantly lower than those of the lunar soils within the Procellarum KREEP Terrane. The local basalts are characterized by low-Ti (TiO2, 5.08%), low-Al (Al2O3 9.85%) and low-K (∼830 ppm), features suggesting that the CE-6 soil is a mixture of local basalts and non-basaltic ejecta. The returned CE-6 sample contains diverse lithic fragments, including local mare basalt, breccia, agglutinate, glasses and leucocrate. These local mare basalts document the volcanic history of the lunar far side, while the non-basaltic fragments may offer critical insights into the lunar highland crust, SPA impact melts and potentially the deep lunar mantle, making these samples highly significant for scientific research.

Abstract:Chang'e-6 (CE-6) is the first sample-return mission from the lunar farside and will be launched in May of 2024. The landing area is in the south of the Apollo basin inside the South Pole Aitken basin. Statistics and analyses of impact craters in the landing area are essential to support safe landing and geologic studies. In particular, the crater size–frequency distribution information of the landing area is critical to understanding the provenance of the CE-6 lunar samples to be returned and can be used to verify and refine the lunar chronology model by combining with the radioisotope ages of the relevant samples. In this research, a digital orthophoto map (DOM) mosaic with resolution of 3 m/pixel of the CE-6 landing area was generated from the 743 Narrow Angle Camera of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera. Based on the DOM, craters were extracted by an automated method and checked manually. A total of 770,731 craters were extracted in the whole area of 246 km × 135 km, 511,484 craters of which were within the mare area. Systematic analyses of the crater distribution, completeness, spatial density, and depth-to-diameter ratio were conducted. Geologic model age estimation was carried out in the mare area that was divided into three geologic units according to the TiO2 abundance. The result showed that the east part of the mare had the oldest model age of μ3.27−0.045+0.036 Ga, and the middle part of the mare had the youngest model age of μ2.49−0.073+0.072 Ga. The crater catalogue and the surface model age analysis results were used to support topographic and geologic analyses of the pre-selected landing area of the CE-6 mission before the launch and will contribute to further scientific researches after the lunar samples are returned to Earth.

Abstract:Lunar exploration is deemed crucial for uncovering the origins of the Earth-Moon system and is the first step for advancing humanity's exploration of deep space. Over the past decade, the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program (CLEP), also known as the Chang'e (CE) Project, has achieved remarkable milestones. It has successfully developed and demonstrated the engineering capability required to reach and return from the lunar surface. Notably, the CE Project has made historic firsts with the landing and on-site exploration of the far side of the Moon, along with the collection of the youngest volcanic samples from the Procellarum KREEP Terrane. These achievements have significantly enhanced our understanding of lunar evolution. Building on this success, China has proposed an ambitious crewed lunar exploration strategy, aiming to return to the Moon for scientific exploration and utilization. This plan encompasses two primary phases: the first crewed lunar landing and exploration, followed by a thousand-kilometer scale scientific expedition to construct a geological cross-section across the lunar surface. Recognizing the limitations of current lunar exploration efforts and China's engineering and technical capabilities, this paper explores the benefits of crewed lunar exploration while leveraging synergies with robotic exploration. The study refines fundamental lunar scientific questions that could lead to significant breakthroughs, considering the respective engineering and technological requirements. This research lays a crucial foundation for defining the objectives of future lunar exploration, emphasizing the importance of crewed missions and offering insights into potential advancements in lunar science.

Abstract:Chang’E-1, the first lunar mission in China, was successfully launched on October 24,2007, which opened the prelude of China’s Lunar Exploration Program. Later on, the Chang’E-2 and Chang’E-3 satellites were successfully launched in 2010 and 2013, respectively. In order to achieve the science objectives, various payloads boarded the spacecraft. The scientific data from these instruments were received by Beijing and Kunming ground stations simultaneously. Up to now, about 5.628 Terabytes of raw data were received totally. A series of research results has been achieved. This paper presents a brief introduction to the main scientific results and latest progress from Chang’E-3 mission.

Abstract:To address questions about the multiple lunar nearside–farside dichotomies and to provide new insights into both the early impact history of the Solar System and the geological evolution of the Moon, the Chang'e-6 (CE-6) landing zone has been selected to lie within the lunar farside South Pole–Aitken (SPA) basin in the southern part of the Apollo basin (150–158° W, 41–45° S), a site that provides access to a diversity of SPA material. Here, we describe the geomorphology, geology and chronology of three candidate sampling sites within this zone that are likely to ensure safe landing and sampling. The geological characteristics indicate that CE-6 is expected to collect lunar farside SPA ejecta fragments, possible mantle material and young (roughly 2.40 Gyr-year-old) and/or old (roughly 3.43 Gyr-year-old) basaltic material, all of which will provide important guidance for future in situ farside sample collection and deepen our understanding of the evolution of the Moon.

Abstract:Lunar igneous activities, including intrusive magmatism and extrusive volcanism, and their products contain significant information about the lunar interior and its thermal state. Their distribution is asymmetrical on the nearside and farside, reflecting the global dichotomy. Samples from the South Pole–Aitken (SPA) basin on the farside hold the key to disclosing the dichotomy conundrum and rebalancing the asymmetrical understandings of the Moon, in addition to previously returned nearside samples (Apollo, Luna, Chang'e-5). For the first time, the Chang'e-6 mission obtained ∼1935.5 g of lunar soils from the farside in the southern Apollo basin, northeast of SPA, opening a window to solve this long-standing question. However, compared with the well-known mare/cryptomare volcanism in SPA, intrusive activity has a much more obscure presence and origin, due to its unclear surface expression, thus impeding the ongoing Chang'e-6 sample analysis, which is therefore emphasized here. We found evidence that intrusive magmatism is extensive across SPA, including Mg-suite intrusions, floor-modified craters, and linear/ring dikes, consistent with its intermediate crustal thickness, where dike intrusion is favored. Intrusive magmatism is abundant in the Apollo basin, where Chang'e-6 landed. Two obscure craters were discovered (Apollo X and Q) with evidence for subsurface intrusions, strongly suggesting the intensive intrusion in the region. Plutonic materials are very likely to be obtained by Chang'e-6, especially the Mg-suite from the western peak ring of the Apollo basin that delivered and mixed in the soils by the Chaffee S crater, whose components might provide critical new insights into their petrogenesis, early lunar evolution, and the origin of dichotomy.

Scientific Data and Its Release of Chang'e-3 Mission

Abstract:Introduction: The Chang’E-3 (CE-3) mission was successfully launched at December 1, 2013 as China’s third lunar probe and first lunar lander/rover mission of the Chinese Lunar Exploration Program (CLEP). CE-3 landed at (19.51oW, 44.12oN) in northwestern Mare Imbrium on December 14, 2013. The Yutu rover separated from the lander on Dec.14, and the CE-3 lander and Yutu rover took photos of each other on Dec.15, marking the complete success of the CE-3 lunar probe mission.By December 31,2014, CE-3 had completed the main scientific objectives within its one-year expected life time. Up to now, CE-3 lander is still running which has been extended operation one year. Instrumentation and Science Mission Objectives: The CE-3 lander and rover each carries four science instruments. Instruments on the lander are: Landing Camera (LCAM), Terrain Camera (TCAM), Extreme Ultraviolet Camera (EUVC), and Moon-based Ultraviolet Telescope (MUVT). The four instruments on the rover are: Panoramic Camera (PCAM), VIS-NIR Imaging Spectrometer (VNIS), Active Particle induced Xray Spectrometer (APXS), and Lunar Penetrating Radar (LPR). The CE-3 science objectives includes: (1) investigation of the morphological features and geological structures of and near the landing area; (2) integrated in-situ analysis of mineral and chemical composition of and near the landing area; (3) integrated exploration of lunar interior structure; and (4) exploration of the terrestrial-lunar space environment and lunar surface environment and lunar-based astronomical observations. Abstract:The Chang'E-6 (CE-6) mission, launched by China on 2024 May 3, marks the first successful retrieval of samples from the farside of the Moon, specifically from the southern mare plain of the Apollo basin within the South Pole-Aitken (SPA) Basin. This study aims to provide a comprehensive geological analysis of the Apollo basin, focusing on the Apollo basin materials that CE-6 may have collected. By examining the regional geology, surface mineralogy, thorium (Th) abundance, and crustal thickness, we seek to understand the implications of these materials for the SPA basin's structure and stratigraphic history. We find that the Apollo basin exhibits significant lateral compositional variations, with Mg-rich noritic materials predominantly in the southwestern portion and more feldspathic materials in the northeast, probably due to the fact that the Apollo basin is situated on different structures of the underlying SPA basin. Those Mg-rich materials, likely representing deep lithologies from local lower crust, are associated with low Th abundance, suggesting a KREEP-poor origin. The inclusion of foreign materials in the CE-6 samples increases the complexity while also enhancing their research potential. In addition to the local mare basalts, Mg-rich noritic materials associated with the Apollo basin and Th-rich materials originating from the SPA basin may also have been collected by CE-6. Laboratory research of these diverse lithologies will contribute to unraveling the characteristics of the farside mantle, the geological history of the giant SPA basin, as well as the cause of the substantial asymmetry between the lunar nearside and farside.

Abstract:Remote sensing observations have shown that the far side of the Moon (lunar farside) has different geology and rock composition to the near side, including the abundances of potassium, rare earth elements, and phosphorus (collectively known as KREEP). The Chang'e-6 (CE-6) spacecraft collected samples from the South Pole-Aitken (SPA) basin on the farside and brought them to Earth. We use lead-lead and rubidium-strontium isotope systems to date low-titanium basalt in a CE-6 sample, finding a consistent age of 2830 ± 5 million years. We interpret this as the date of volcanism in SPA and incorporate it into lunar crater chronology. Strontium, neodymium and lead isotopes indicate the volcanic magma was from a lunar mantle source depleted in incompatible elements and containing almost no KREEP component.

Abstract:The Yutu-2 rover, part of the Chang'e-4 (CE-4) mission to the lunar farside, has been exploring the Von Kármán crater (VK) within the South Pole-Aitken (SPA) gathering data on its geology. The Lunar Penetrating Radar's (LPR) 500 MHz antenna reveals the subsurface structure up to 40 m in depth, which helps to construct models on the evolution of the shallow stratum. This work presents the analysis and interpretation of the data collected during the first twenty lunar days, from January 2019 to July 2020. Below an 11±4-meter surface regolith layer, the radar image reveals well-defined reflectors that are interpreted as discrete depositional layers. These marked density boundaries could indicate a geologically brief time interval between each arrival, which prevented the materials to undergo a deeper homogenization through space weathering. To investigate further, we generated a subsurface rock distribution map using the correlation of dual-channel antennas data from the same channel. Clusters of rocks located at the bottom of each ejecta stratum are revealed, probably sorted by size due to the statistically less frequent occurrence of larger impact events admixing the deeper-seated materials. The bowl-shaped outline discovered in both rock and LPR energy distribution maps is interpreted to represent a 150±30 m wide and 10±5 m deep paleo-crater that was excavated within three thin ejecta layers. The CE-4 LPR reveals a complex geological history within the Von Kármán crater with no fewer than four impact events delivering meters thick ejecta at the CE-4 landing area following the end of the infilling phase.

Abstract:A major lunar scientific question is the cause of the paucity of farside mare basalts. The South Pole-Aitken Basin (SPA) is the largest (2400×2050 km) and most ancient lunar impact basin. The Apollo peak-ring basin, the largest impact feature within the SPA, is located on its northeast edge in a transitional zone of crustal thickness and compositions. The Chang'e-6 (CE-6) mission, the first sample-return mission to the lunar farside, is targeted to land in the southern Apollo basin, sampling farside mare basalts with critical insights into early lunar evolution. In preparation for the CE-6 sample return, we conducted a comprehensive study of Apollo basin volcanism. We found that volcanic activity began in the Nectarian Period (∼4.05 Ga) (cryptomaria) and continued into the Eratosthenian Period (∼1.79 Ga). At least two Imbrian-aged episodes of eruptions occurred in the southern part of the Apollo basin where CE-6 is targeted to land. At ∼3.35 Ga, low-Ti (∼3.2 wt %) volcanism was active, and its products covered the entire low topographic region of the southern Apollo basin, between the inner and outer rings. Closely following its eruption at ∼3.07 Ga, high-Ti basalts (∼6.2 wt %) erupted close to the Chaffee S crater and flowed east with decreasing thickness until encountering proto-wrinkle ridges. In addition, volcanic activity in the region is significantly correlated with low crustal thickness, primarily thinned by the SPA and Apollo impact events. For regions of intermediate-thick crust (Oppenheimer crater), dikes stalled under the crater floor, spreading to form sills and a floor-fractured crater. For thin crust regions (Apollo basin interior), dikes erupted directly, forming extensive lava flows. In areas of thick highland crust, we see no evidence of extrusive activity or floor-fractured craters, suggesting that dikes there do not reach the surface and are intrusive. CE-6 samples returned from the unique geological setting will provide significant petrogenetic information to address further the paucity of farside mare basalts and the lunar nearside-farside dichotomy. To solve those scientific questions, the high-Ti mare region in south Apollo basin is recommended as the priority landing site.

Abstract:In 2024 June, China's Chang′e-6 (CE-6) mission successfully returned 1935.3 grams of samples from the lunar farside for the first time. The origin and composition of the unique samples could offer valuable insights into fundamental questions on the Moon's evolutional history. Besides the local materials of mare basalts, a certain quantity of foreign ejecta materials are expected in the samples, while their percentage was mostly overestimated since the influence of impact gardening was not fully considered. In this study, we model the impact gardening process surrounding the CE-6 landing site by numerical simulations. Our simulations show that impact gardening played a key role in overturning the local materials and diluting the foreign ones in the top-meters-deep layer at the landing site. About 90% of the CE-6 drilled samples, which were sampled within the top ∼1 m deep layer, are predicted to be the local intermediate-Ti mare basalts originating in the deeper area of 1–60 m, and the underlying low-Ti basalts may make up <1%. The foreign materials in the CE-6 drilled samples likely constitute a minor portion, with an abundance of ∼3.0%. As the primary contributor (∼2.1%) of foreign materials, Chaffee S ejecta may contain lunar mantle materials excavated by the South Pole–Aitken basin.
