Abstract:Landing on surface of planet is the most direct and effective means of deep space exploration. Taking the picture of lander and surrounding environment can monitor the working status of the lander, and different exploration tasks arranged different imaging methods. Apollo 11 achieved manned lunar landing, so astronauts leaved lunar lander and installed imaging camera; Curiosity rover is equipped MAHLI (Mars Hand Lens Imager) at the end of the robot arm, and capture the own image of the rover; Chang'E-3 consists of lander and rover, which can captured image each other. In this paper, taking into account the working conditions without rover, we designed an ejection-style self-imaging apparatus for lunar lander, which consists of the optical imaging system, the tumbler structure body and the ejector body. Ejector body is mounted on the lunar lander to eject the imaging system to the appropriate distance. To make the image of lander in the center field of view, the imaging system needs to be installed on a tumbler structure body to ensure that the optical axis of imaging system can be adjusted to the direction toward the lander. We designed and developed the imaging optical system, the mechanical structure of tumbler body and ejector body, deduced reasonable compression spiral spring parameter according to the application requirements, and completed finite element analysis of tumbler structure body in the fall process. The experiments on the sand, soil and gravel ground verify the feasibility of the design scheme.

Abstract:Plans are being developed to drill and core a 100m deep hole on the Moon, an ambitious step beyond the 2.986m depth achieved at the Apollo 17 landing site in 1972. There are many scientific reasons for doing this, including determining the lunar geology and mineralogy below the meteorite-shattered regolith surface and its volatile content and heat flow, and identifying resources for future human space exploration. The complexities are such that the mission lead time is 15 plus years. Drilling in the lunar environment poses many different technical challenges compared with terrestrial activity, although there are parallels, starting with the geological prognosis, similar to an oilfield exploration play. Operationally, the drilling equipment must escape Earth's gravitational pull. It must then travel almost 400,000 km to the drill site before it can be deployed and drilling starts. With each Kilogram of payload currently costing over $1.2 Million (Astrobotic Payload User Guide) this limits the available continuous power to approximately 100W, a minute fraction of its terrestrial counterparts. At these distances a radio signal takes 2.5 seconds to make the round trip, so the deployment and subsequent drilling activities must be largely autonomous. To add to the difficulties, the Moon's gravitational pull is only one sixth that of the Earth and it has no atmosphere, introducing weight on bit and hole cleaning problems. Despite the low gravity, displaced solids can still fall and obstruct the hole and some form of casing will be needed to secure the hole as it is drilled. The associated weight, power and geometrical limitations make this another serious technical challenge that must be overcome. With little or no chance to intervene, the operation must aim to be engineered to be right-first-time. In the last decade, automation in oil and gas drilling has advanced considerably (Veila 2016; Hseih 2017). The number of autonomous activities has expanded and system reliability has improved. This, and other aspects of oil and gas experience, coupled with space exploration expertise and technology will be combined to make this happen. The pay-back for the oil and gas industry's involvement in this endeavor will be a step change in reliability and efficiency that results from satisfying the demanding conditions and clinical attention to detail that will be necessary to succeed. The paper contains details of the goals, challenges and current thinking that drilling on the Moon entails, and the parallels with oil and gas drilling. This comes at a time when there is a renewed interest in further exploration of our solar system, particularly the Moon and Mars.

Abstract:As humans advance their presence in space and seek to improve the quality of life on Earth, a variety of science questions in support of these two objectives can be answered using the Moon. In this paper, we present a concept for an integrated mission focused on answering fundamental and applied biological questions on the Moon: BioMoon. The mission was designed to investigate the effects of the lunar radiation, gravity, and regolith on biological systems ranging from biomolecules to systems with complex trophic interactions, spanning a range of model organisms. Using common analytical systems and data processing, BioMoon represents a systems-level integrated life sciences mission. It would provide fundamental insights into biological responses to the lunar environment, as well as applied knowledge for In-Situ Resource Utilisation (ISRU), closed-loop life support system development, planetary protection and human health care. The mission was conceived to test biotechnology and sensor technology for lunar and terrestrial application and provide education and outreach opportunities. Although BioMoon was considered in the context of the European Space Agency's Argonaut (European Large Logistics Lander) concept, the mission design provides a template for any integrated life sciences experimental suite on the Moon and other celestial bodies, implemented either robotically or by human explorers.

Abstract:The Earth's moon is currently an object of interest of many space agencies for unmanned robotic missions within this decade. Besides future prospects for building lunar gateways as support to human space flight, the Moon is an attractive location for scientific purposes. Not only will its study give insight on the foundations of the Solar System but also its location, uncontaminated by the Earth's ionosphere, represents a vantage point for the observation of the Sun and planetary bodies outside the Solar System. Lunar exploration has been traditionally conducted by means of single-agent robotic assets, which is a limiting factor for the return of scientific missions. The German Aerospace Center (DLR) is developing fundamental technologies towards increased autonomy of robotic explorers to fulfil more complex mission tasks through cooperation. This paper presents an overview of past, present and future activities of DLR towards highly autonomous systems for scientific missions targeting the Moon and other planetary bodies. The heritage from the Mobile Asteroid Scout (MASCOT), developed jointly by DLR and CNES and deployed on asteroid Ryugu on 3 October 2018 from JAXA's Hayabusa2 spacecraft, inspired the development of novel core technologies towards higher efficiency in planetary exploration. Together with the lessons learnt from the ROBEX project (2012–2017), where a mobile robot autonomously deployed seismic sensors at a Moon analogue site, this experience is shaping the future steps towards more complex space missions. They include the development of a mobile rover for JAXA's Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) in 2024 as well as demonstrations of novel multi-robot technologies at a Moon analogue site on the volcano Mt Etna in the ARCHES project. Within ARCHES, a demonstration mission is planned from the 14 June to 10 July 2021, 1 during which heterogeneous teams of robots will autonomously conduct geological and mineralogical analysis experiments and deploy an array of low-frequency antennas to measure Jovian and solar bursts. Abstract:In early 2022, Intuitive Machines' NOVA-C Lander will touch down on the lunar surface becoming the first commercial endeavor to visit a celestial body. NOVA-C will deliver six payloads to the lunar surface with various scientific and engineering objectives, ushering in a new era of commercial space exploration and utilization. However, to safely accomplish the mission, the NOVA-C lander must ensure its landing site is free of hazards larger than 30 cm and the slope of local terrain at touchdown is less than 10 degrees off vertical. To accomplish this, NOVA-C utilizes Intuitive Machines' precision navigation system, coupled with machine vision algorithms for scene reduction and landing site characterization. A unique aspect to the NOVA-C approach is the real-time nature of the hazard detection and avoidance algorithms--which are performed 400 meters above and down range of the intended landing site and completed within 15 seconds. In this paper, we review the theoretical foundations for the hazard detection and avoidance algorithms, describe the practical challenges of implementation on the NOVA-C flight computer, and present test and analysis results.

Abstract:Change’4 Lunar Probe will softly land on the farside of the Moon for the first time of all mankind and carry out in-situ and rovering exploration. In this paper, the scientific significance and engineering difficulties of Change’4 are introduced and the probe’s general design, including the aspects of landing site selection, relay communication, trajectory design of relay satellite is explained. Besides, four key technologies, namely safe landing strategy on complex terrain, orbit design and control of libration point 2, relay communication on L2, radioisotope thermoelectric generator (RTG) and electric-thermal utilization, as well as how to realize them are also discussed. Finally the prospect of the prominent technological breakthrough of Change’4 is described.

Abstract:Last month's return to Earth of China's lunar lander Chang'e-6 with samples from the far side of the Moon is a reminder that there are "firsts" in robotic space exploration still to be achieved. Unfortunately, this year has seen a major setback for the prospects of an even more extensive plan to collect samples from Mars. In April, the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) made clear that the ballooning cost for the US Mars Sample Return mission to around $11 billion was too much and the 2040 return date was too distant. NASA has been told to look for ideas to lower costs and shorten the timeline. Shock and anger are palpable in the astronomy community.

Abstract:Experiments, analyses, and simulations have shown that the engine exhaust plume of a Mars lander large enough for human spaceflight will create a deep crater in the martian soil, blowing ejecta to approximately 1 km distance, damaging the bottom of the lander with high-momentum rock impacts, and possibly tilting the lander as the excavated hole collapses to become a broad residual crater upon engine cutoff. Because of this, we deem that we will not have adequate safety margins to land humans on Mars unless we robotically stabilize the soil to form in situ landing pads prior to the mission. It will take a significant amount of time working in a harsh off-planet environment to develop and certify the new technologies and procedures for in situ landing pad construction. The only place to reasonably accomplish this is on the Moon.

Abstract:Mars' moons Phobos and Deimos are low-albedo, D-type bodies that may preserve samples of outer solar system material that contributed organics and volatiles to the accreting terrestrial planets. A Discovery-class mission concept described in this paper, the Mars-Moon Exploration, Reconnaissance and Landed Investigation (MERLIN), will obtain in situ measurements from Deimos to test models for the moon's origin. The measurement objectives of MERLIN are to determine Deimos' elemental and mineralogical composition, to investigate its volatile and organic content, and to characterize processes that have modified its surface. To achieve these objectives, a landed payload will provide stereo imaging and measurements of elemental and mineralogical composition and interior structure. An orbital payload will acquire global high-resolution and color imaging, putting the landing site in context by characterizing Deimos' geology. Following MOI the spacecraft flies in formation with Deimos, and uses small changes in its orbit around Mars to investigate Deimos from a range of altitudes and illuminations over 4 months. Data taken during 1- to 2-km altitude flyovers will certify a landing site. The spacecraft will be delivered to a point several kilometers above Deimos, and will navigate to landing on a fresh exposure of regolith using onboard imaging. 90 days of baseline landed operations will provide a complete set of measurements, with schedule reserve, and there is sufficient propellant to repeat the measurements at a second site.

Abstract:Many plans are in preparation to land robotic missions on the surface of the Moon, which will pave the way to return humans to the lunar surface and set the stage for an ongoing human presence. Artemis is a NASA-led international effort to return humans to the Moon. One of the goals of Artemis is to use innovative technologies to address priority science objectives. At the same time, the European Space Agency (ESA) is exploring designs for a Moon base to enable ongoing human activity on the lunar surface. Furthermore, China plans to land humans on the Moon by 2030. In situ resource utilization ( ISRU )—the extraction of useful materials from the Moon itself—will be beneficial for efforts to sustain a human presence. ISRU could provide water that can be used by astronauts or split into hydrogen and oxygen rocket fuel for returning to Earth or moving onward to Mars, along with other vital resources. Although this possibility is exciting, it is critical that we recognize how human and robotic activity will affect the lunar environment . Not having a global strategy to characterize lunar volatile materials before their scientific value is lost will substantially degrade the Moon's scientific potential.

Abstract:There is strong interest in lunar exploration from governmental space agencies, private companies and the public. NASA is about to send humans to the lunar surface again within the next few years, and ESA has proposed the concept of the Moon Village, with the goal of a sustainable human presence and activity on the lunar surface. Although construction of the infrastructure for this permanent human settlement is envisaged for the end of this decade by many, there is no definite mission plan yet. While this may be unsatisfactory for the impatient, this fact actually carries great potential: this is the optimal time to develop a forward-looking science input and influence mission planning. Based on data from recent missions (SMART-1, Kaguya, Chang'E, Chandrayaan-1 and LRO) as well as simulation campaigns (e.g. ILEWG EuroMoonMars), we provide initial input on how astronomy could be incorporated into a future Moon Village, and how the presence of humans (and robots) on the Moon could help deploy and maintain astronomical hardware.
