Abstract:Landing on surface of planet is the most direct and effective means of deep space exploration. Taking the picture of lander and surrounding environment can monitor the working status of the lander, and different exploration tasks arranged different imaging methods. Apollo 11 achieved manned lunar landing, so astronauts leaved lunar lander and installed imaging camera; Curiosity rover is equipped MAHLI (Mars Hand Lens Imager) at the end of the robot arm, and capture the own image of the rover; Chang'E-3 consists of lander and rover, which can captured image each other. In this paper, taking into account the working conditions without rover, we designed an ejection-style self-imaging apparatus for lunar lander, which consists of the optical imaging system, the tumbler structure body and the ejector body. Ejector body is mounted on the lunar lander to eject the imaging system to the appropriate distance. To make the image of lander in the center field of view, the imaging system needs to be installed on a tumbler structure body to ensure that the optical axis of imaging system can be adjusted to the direction toward the lander. We designed and developed the imaging optical system, the mechanical structure of tumbler body and ejector body, deduced reasonable compression spiral spring parameter according to the application requirements, and completed finite element analysis of tumbler structure body in the fall process. The experiments on the sand, soil and gravel ground verify the feasibility of the design scheme.

Abstract:The safe landing of a Moon lander and the performance of the precise instruments it carries may be affected by too heavy impact on touchdown. Accordingly, landing characteristics have become an important research focus. Described in this paper are model tests carried out using simulated lunar soils of different relative densities (called “simulant” lunar soils below), with a scale reduction factor of 1/6 to consider the relative gravities of the Earth and Moon. In the model tests, the lander was simplified as an impact column with a saucer-shaped footpad with various impact landing masses and velocities. Based on the test results, the relationships between the footpad peak feature responses and impact kinetic energy have been analyzed. Numerical simulation analyses were also conducted to simulate the vertical impact process. A 3D dynamic finite element model was built for which the material parameters were obtained from laboratory test data. When compared with the model tests, the numerical model proved able to effectively simulate the dynamic characteristics of the axial forces, accelerations, and penetration depths of the impact column during landing. This numerical model can be further used as required for simulating oblique landing impacts.

Soil Test Apparatus for Lunar Surfaces

Abstract:We have studied several field geotechnical test instruments for their applicability to lunar soil simulants and analog soils. Their performance was evaluated in a series of tests in lunar simulants JSC-1A, NU-LHT-2M, and CHENOBI each prepared in carefully controlled states of compaction through vibration on a shake table with overburden. In general, none of the instruments is adequate for a low-cohesion, frictional soil, but we find that a modified version of a shear vane tester allows us to extract several of the important soil parameters. This modified instrument may be useful for use on the lunar surface by astronauts or a robotic lander. We have also found that JSC-1A does not behave mechanically like the other lunar soil simulants, probably because its particle shapes are more rounded. Furthermore we have studied a soil material, BP-1, identified as very lunar-like at a lunar analog location. We find this material has a natural particle size distribution similar to that of lunar soil and arguably better than JSC-1A. We find that BP-1 behaves very similarly to the high fidelity lunar simulants NU-LHT-2M and CHENOBI.

Using physics-based simulation towards eliminating empiricism in extraterrestrial terramechanics applications

Abstract:Recently, there has been a surge of international interest in extraterrestrial exploration targeting the Moon, Mars, the moons of Mars, and various asteroids. This contribution discusses how current state-of-the-art Earth-based testing for designing rovers and landers for these missions currently leads to overly optimistic conclusions about the behavior of these devices upon deployment on the targeted celestial bodies. The key misconception is that gravitational offset is necessary during the \textit{terramechanics} testing of rover and lander prototypes on Earth. The body of evidence supporting our argument is tied to a small number of studies conducted during parabolic flights and insights derived from newly revised scaling laws. We argue that what has prevented the community from fully diagnosing the problem at hand is the absence of effective physics-based models capable of simulating terramechanics under low gravity conditions. We developed such a physics-based simulator and utilized it to gauge the mobility of early prototypes of the Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER), which is slated to depart for the Moon in November 2024. This contribution discusses the results generated by this simulator, how they correlate with physical test results from the NASA-Glenn SLOPE lab, and the fallacy of the gravitational offset in rover and lander testing. The simulator developed is open sourced and made publicly available for unfettered use; it can support principled studies that extend beyond trafficability analysis to provide insights into in-situ resource utilization activities, e.g., digging, bulldozing, and berming in low gravity.

Abstract:Many laboratory tests of lunar soil simulant were conducted to analyze the vertical impact during landing process.The method to determine the material parameters was discussed,and the range of material constants was suggested.The space lander was simplified to be an impact column according to the similarity scale between earth and moon.The three-dimensional dynamic finite element model was established to simulate the process of impact against lunar soil.Comparing with the model test results,the model can rationally simulate the dynamic response of the model column's axial force,acceleration and penetration depth during the period of interaction.The plastic area displays ellipsoid of variational shape,the influence mainly distributes within the depth of 2.0~3.0 times of diameter and the deformation likes a basin.The response of velocity lags axial force and the displacement lags the velocity.

Abstract:The study of the interaction between lunar lander footpad and lunar soil during the moon landing has great importance owing to the strong impact which affects safe landing and normal performance of inner precise instruments. Since horizontal slide is the complicated landing process, model tests on the process of dragging footpad in simulant lunar soil are carried out with the self-developed test device to investigate the changes of horizontal and vertical forces on footpad. The influences of relative densities, sliding velocities, penetrations and turn angles on these forces are further studied. The results show that the horizontal forces appear almost linear increase with the increase of vertical forces. Besides, the forces increase with the growth of relative density of soil, horizontal velocity and penetration. The forces are greatly influenced by the turn angle. When turn angle of footpad is (8°, 26°), the force of lander footpad is the least. When the turn angle is (0°, -26°), which means bulldozing process, the force is the largest. This turn angle (0°, -26°) is appropriate for the buffer structure of lander to dissipate impact energy in slip process.
Lunar Drilling – Challenges and Opportunities

Abstract:Plans are being developed to drill and core a 100m deep hole on the Moon, an ambitious step beyond the 2.986m depth achieved at the Apollo 17 landing site in 1972. There are many scientific reasons for doing this, including determining the lunar geology and mineralogy below the meteorite-shattered regolith surface and its volatile content and heat flow, and identifying resources for future human space exploration. The complexities are such that the mission lead time is 15 plus years. Drilling in the lunar environment poses many different technical challenges compared with terrestrial activity, although there are parallels, starting with the geological prognosis, similar to an oilfield exploration play. Operationally, the drilling equipment must escape Earth's gravitational pull. It must then travel almost 400,000 km to the drill site before it can be deployed and drilling starts. With each Kilogram of payload currently costing over $1.2 Million (Astrobotic Payload User Guide) this limits the available continuous power to approximately 100W, a minute fraction of its terrestrial counterparts. At these distances a radio signal takes 2.5 seconds to make the round trip, so the deployment and subsequent drilling activities must be largely autonomous. To add to the difficulties, the Moon's gravitational pull is only one sixth that of the Earth and it has no atmosphere, introducing weight on bit and hole cleaning problems. Despite the low gravity, displaced solids can still fall and obstruct the hole and some form of casing will be needed to secure the hole as it is drilled. The associated weight, power and geometrical limitations make this another serious technical challenge that must be overcome. With little or no chance to intervene, the operation must aim to be engineered to be right-first-time. In the last decade, automation in oil and gas drilling has advanced considerably (Veila 2016; Hseih 2017). The number of autonomous activities has expanded and system reliability has improved. This, and other aspects of oil and gas experience, coupled with space exploration expertise and technology will be combined to make this happen. The pay-back for the oil and gas industry's involvement in this endeavor will be a step change in reliability and efficiency that results from satisfying the demanding conditions and clinical attention to detail that will be necessary to succeed. The paper contains details of the goals, challenges and current thinking that drilling on the Moon entails, and the parallels with oil and gas drilling. This comes at a time when there is a renewed interest in further exploration of our solar system, particularly the Moon and Mars.

Abstract:NASA and ESA are preparing a series of human exploration missions using the four-person Orion crew vehicle, launched by NASA's Space Launch System, and a Lunar Orbiting Platform-Gateway (LOP-G) that enable long duration (>30 days) operations in cis-lunar space. This will provide an opportunity for science and exploration from the lunar surface facilitated by low latency surface telerobotics. We describe two precursor experiments, using the International Space Station (ISS) and a student-built teleoperated rover, which are laying the groundwork for remote operation of rovers on the Moon by astronauts aboard the LOP-G. Such missions will open the lunar far side, among other sites, for exploration and science. We describe examples of two high-priority, lunar science missions that can be conducted using low latency surface telerobotics including an astronaut-assisted far side sample return and the deployment/construction of a low frequency radio telescope array to observe the first stars and galaxies (Cosmic Dawn). The lessons learned from these lunar operations will feed-forward to future low latency telepresence missions on Mars.
Rocket Cratering in Simulated Lunar and Martian Environments

Abstract:With NASA's planned return to the moon and possibly with lunar outposts being formed, repeated landings at the same site will be necessary. Understanding rocket plume interaction with lunar and Martian surfaces is of paramount importance in order to safely land and protect hardware surrounding the landing site. This work will report on results of three small experiments intended to explore plume impingement onto lunar and Martian surfaces: Handheld Observation of Scour Holes (HOOSH), Handheld Angle of Repose Measurements of Lunar Simulants (HARMLuS), and Mars Architecture Team study (MATS). The first two experiments were performed during two sorties of reduced gravity flights. HOOSH was designed to investigate crater formation as a function of gravitational level (lunar and Martian gravity). HARMLuS was designed to measure the Angle of Failure (related to the angle of repose) at lunar and Martian gravity. Both experiments have complex findings indicative of the hysteretic behavior of granular materials, especially resulting from reduced gravity. The MATS experiment was designed to investigate the effects of regolith compaction on the granular mechanics of crater formation. In general, the granular mechanics is a much stronger function of compaction than gravitation acceleration. Crater formation is greatly enhanced at reduced gravity (resulting in much larger craters). The angle of failure of the lunar simulants increases with decreasing gravitational acceleration, and occasionally becomes infinite for some compactions at lunar gravity. The angle of failure also increases with increasing compaction. While compaction does play a role in the time development of crater formation, the asymptotic behavior is largely unaffected.

Abstract:Fundamental big-picture challenges face the enterprise of burgeoning space test, which may also have an impact on the syllabus and training of a possible future Space Test Pilot School. Test fundamentals and test conduct under stresses of time and fuel will be where the rubber meets the road. This paper specifically discusses four of those challenges, and their impact on US Space Force operators. (1) Testing limits of space capabilities. Space vehicles have traditionally imposed very strict operating limits. A culture shift from the top-down will be required before space testers are allowed to test spacecraft limits as freely as air-breathing test pilots do today. (2) Permitted procedures. There are a limited number of contingency procedures at a space operator's disposal, further constrained within themselves. (3) Safety nets. A discussion of space-specific methods that mitigate risks in operations, and the need for more agile fault-detection. (4) Operator proficiency. The qualifications and recency of a tester at the controls must be considered in the context of a single misstep potentially resulting in the entire asset being lost. We suggest that hours in high-risk test per spacecraft may become the defining factor for high-risk space test execution.

Abstract:Lunar structures will be exposed to one of the most extreme environments that have ever been considered for human settlements. In situ, regolith-based materials are being proposed for construction on the moon, offering the benefit of reducing the cost of transporting large amounts of materials or prefabricated elements, and relying on the ability to transport mainly the equipment needed to construct landing pads, shelters, blast shields, habitats, roadways, etc. However, the properties of materials that are made, all or in part, from indigenous lunar resources are likely to change based on the make-up of the material, the location where it was taken from, the production processes, and time. No standards or building codes exist for the design and construction of infrastructure on the moon. Engineers will need dependable information about these materials before any design can be completed. Hard-won lessons from centuries of using similar resources on Earth need to be leveraged to develop the best procedures that will be critical for testing such materials for structural applications. Here we discuss the technical challenges of establishing such standards. Using the timely example of a landing pad on the moon, we identify the gaps in both knowledge and testing capabilities that exist today.

Abstract:The lunar geological record contains a rich archive of the history of the inner Solar System, including information relevant to understanding the origin and evolution of the Earth-Moon system, the geological evolution of rocky planets, and our local cosmic environment. This paper provides a brief review of lunar exploration to-date, and describes how future exploration initiatives will further advance our understanding of the origin and evolution of the Moon, the Earth-Moon system, and of the Solar System more generally. It is concluded that further advances will require the placing of new scientific instruments on, and the return of additional samples from, the lunar surface. Some of these scientific objectives can be achieved robotically, for example by in situ geochemical and geophysical measurements and through carefully targeted sample return missions. However, in the longer term, we argue that lunar science would greatly benefit from renewed human operations on the surface of the Moon, such as would be facilitated by implementing the recently proposed Global Exploration Roadmap.

Abstract:A deep extraterrestrial drilling mission potentially adds a new level of complexity, and it is crucial to understand the associated challenges. To cope with China's Chang'E 5 mission to return subsurface regolith samples from the Moon, a series of laboratory tests were performed to validate the lunar robotic drilling from 2015 to 2018. The tests took place in a simulated thermal‐vacuum regolith environment, a highly relevant lunar analog site. Force and temperature sensors were integrated into a 2‐m class dry auger coring drill to assess the mechanical and thermophysical status of the sampling process. The operation of the entire testing system was automated, covering regolith penetration and data collection and storage. The science team used sensing data to characterize the subsurface geologic strata, assess the conditions of the drilling robot, and direct the sampling strategy. This experiment represents an essential first step in understanding the technology and operational requirements for lunar drilling and sampling mission. Many laboratory tests have helped guide the design and implementation of the highly successful lunar regolith‐sampling task in the Chang'E 5 mission. This paper documents the experimental system design, highlighting some critical design criteria and design tradeoffs. It also discusses the results of laboratory testing and lists some of the key technological lessons learned.

Abstract:Landing mechanism tends to rebound and turn over, and the stability time is long when landing on the small celestial body. Its landing performance in different conditions is necessary to be evaluated to guide the landing. Here, landing performance evaluation is realized by simulation. Key factors affecting the landing performance including cardan element damping, foot anchors, retro-rocket thrust, landing slope angle, and landing attitude are analyzed. A microgravity platform is built to test the landing mechanism, and the consistency between the simulation and the experiment is compared. On the basis of simulation and experiment, some landing suggestions are proposed to improve the landing performance.

Abstract:The use of eXtended Reality (XR) technologies in the space domain has increased significantly over the past few years as it can offer many advantages when simulating complex and challenging environments. Space agencies are currently using these disruptive tools to train astronauts for Extravehicular Activities (EVAs), to test equipment and procedures, and to assess spacecraft and hardware designs. With the Moon being the current focus of the next generation of space exploration missions, simulating its harsh environment is one of the key areas where XR can be applied, particularly for astronaut training. Peculiar lunar lighting conditions in combination with reduced gravity levels will highly impact human locomotion especially for movements such as walking, jumping, and running. In order to execute operations on the lunar surface and to safely live on the Moon for an extended period of time, innovative training methodologies and tools such as XR are becoming paramount to perform pre-mission validation and certification. This research work presents the findings of the experiments aimed at exploring the integration of XR technology and parabolic flight activities for astronaut training. In addition, the study aims to consolidate these findings into a set of guidelines that can assist future researchers who wish to incorporate XR technology into lunar training and preparation activities, including the use of such XR tools during long duration missions.

Abstract:Last month's return to Earth of China's lunar lander Chang'e-6 with samples from the far side of the Moon is a reminder that there are "firsts" in robotic space exploration still to be achieved. Unfortunately, this year has seen a major setback for the prospects of an even more extensive plan to collect samples from Mars. In April, the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) made clear that the ballooning cost for the US Mars Sample Return mission to around $11 billion was too much and the 2040 return date was too distant. NASA has been told to look for ideas to lower costs and shorten the timeline. Shock and anger are palpable in the astronomy community.

Abstract:A positioning solution for users on the lunar surface is required for the success of upcoming missions. Technological advancements have enabled the use of accurate range and Doppler measurements from a lunar orbiter. This article introduces a filtered approach of joint Doppler and ranging (JDR), a minimal architecture that requires as few as one lunar orbiter to perform 3D positioning of lunar surface vehicles. The simulated performance of JDR and Doppler-based positioning methods is compared. Two lunar satellites are simulated: The lunar relay satellite (LRS) in a 12-h frozen orbit with its apogee above the lunar south pole, and the lunar reconnaissance orbiter in a 2-h Polar orbit. The analysis interval is 8 h over a single LRS ground pass. The ground pass has only a few intervals where both satellites are visible to the user and reference station on the lunar south pole. Navigation nodes are simulated with synchronized clocks for all methods. Measurement and satellite ephemeris errors are embedded into a Monte Carlo simulation to evaluate 3D positioning error. The relative JDR method obtains the lowest and most consistent overall 3D root mean squared error, averaging around 1015 m. The absolute positioning methods are limited by satellite orbit height and other factors. Ultimately, JDR is able to provide reasonably accurate positioning knowledge to users with a minimal required infrastructure. Though this article introduces JDR on the Moon, the same architecture can be applied for other celestial bodies like Venus, Mars, Titan, and asteroids.
