Abstract:This chapter discusses limit-state design of offshore structures. The concept of limit-state design is introduced to allow an assessment that considers limit states such as ultimate, fatigue, serviceability, and accidental. The structure will need to be checked for all groups of limit states to ensure sufficient safety margins between the maximum likely loads and minimum resistance of the structure. Extreme care is required in the finite element analysis to ensure that the correct load and resistance factors have been applied, particularly when several models are being used and the results are linearly superimposed. This chapter discusses ultimate-limit-state design as it relates to ductility and brittle fracture avoidance, plated structures, shell structures, etc. Fatigue-limit-state design is also discussed in this chapter. Several levels of fatigue analysis may be performed including fatigue screening, detailed analysis, reanalysis of welding improvements, and reanalysis of design improvements. The problems that have been experienced with fatigue cracking in marine structures, and the extreme difficulties associated with inspections of all types of marine structures, ensure that large factors of safety are needed to truly accomplish safe life designs. Because of the extreme difficulties associated with inspections of marine structures and the high likelihood of undetected fatigue damage, it is not normally reasonable to expect that inspections will provide the backup or defenses needed to assure fatigue durability.

Abstract:Ultra-large container ships face challenges in structural strength under complex sea conditions. The traditional equivalent design wave method inadequately considers nonlinear wave effects, leading to inaccuracies in strength assessments. This article improves the method by incorporating nonlinear wave effects and optimizing wave spectrum parameters to better simulate structural responses. A study on a container ship, using refined wave load calculations and finite element analysis, focusing on stress distribution in critical hull areas. The findings show that the enhanced method more accurately reflects real loading conditions, confirming the ship's structural soundness and offering optimization suggestions for improved safety and longevity.

Abstract:In this paper,two kinds of typical details in ship structures will be researched.One kind of detail is the longitudinal through the deck transverse,another is the longitudinal traversing the stiffener.Based on a series of initial design sizes,we create and analyze the finite element models of research objects with the ABAQUS which is a large generally used finite element software.In view of different complementary plate forms and different stiffener forms,we shall compare the stresses between these typical details,so that we can research the influences on the stress distribution because of different styles of the local structures.We can also analyze the maximum stress of each kind of typical detail under load and give the variation percentage of stresses between these joints.Besides,we will propose the optimized forms so that it could provide actual engineering reference.

Abstract:Wind turbine blades are typically sophisticated structures with complex geometry and composite layup. The realistic loads acting on blades serviced in harsh offshore environments are fully coupled dynamic loads involving wind, wave, current, servo-control, gravity and other inertial loads. This work presents an easy-to-implement methodology for the time-domain detailed analysis of three-dimensional (3D) blade structure, by combining fully coupled dynamic simulator and general finite element program. As a practical example subjected to multiple marine environmental loadings, one of the rotating composite blades atop a 5-Megawatt (MW) monopile-supported offshore wind turbine (OWT) in soft clay is used for verifying this method step by step, and the effect of rotation and foundation flexibility on blade behaviours is explored. Good agreement between OpenFAST and proposed method in tip deflections and root reaction loads is visible from validation results, and the recommendations on how to further improve this method in future iterations are made. Subsequently, based on stress-time history of blade composite layups, time-domain 3D multiscale analysis including the failure evaluation for layers in outer shell and shear webs using Tsai-Wu strength criteria, as well as the fatigue damage assessment of carbon spar caps was performed.

Abstract:This paper focuses on developing empirical formulae for the hull structural design and safety estimation. An equivalent sequential loading method for biaxial compression is verified and adopted to realize decoupling the conventional implicit strength relationship of plates expressed by elliptic function. In total, 2737 and 1944 scenarios regarding the combinations of slenderness ratio, aspect ratio and applied loads are selected to perform non-linear finite element analysis for longitudinal and transverse ultimate strength, respectively. Influences of considered parameters on the ultimate limit state behaviours are documented and clarified aiming to provide some useful insights for the load-carrying capacity assessment. Based on the outcomes of numerical investigation, two empirical formulae with the same general explicit shape, which can be utilized in various load scenarios including not only combined biaxial compression and lateral pressure but also other load combinations, are proposed through response surface method. According to the statistical analysis, the equations show good agreement with the ABAQUS simulation results (R = 0.993 and 0.996), confirming they can be used as a practical design technology in the ultimate strength assessment.

Abstract:<p>The paper presents experimental, numerical and analytical analyses of a small-scale double-hull structure quasi-statically punched at the mid-span by a rigid flat edge indenter, to examine its energy-absorbing mechanism and fracture. The present study aims to further validate the numerical analysis procedure and the analytical method of individual stiffened panels and web girders against the experiment of the double-hull structure. The specimen, scaled from a tanker's double side structure, includes three spans between the web frames and two spans between the stringers. The paper provides practical information to estimate the extent of structural damage within ship sides during collision accidents. The experimentally obtained force-displacement response and deformation shape show a good agreement with the simulations performed by the explicit LS-DYNA finite element solver. The analysis of the double-hull structure demonstrates the accuracy of the procedure for identifying standard inputs used in numerical codes, in particular the definition of material plastic hardening and the calibration of the critical failure strain by tensile test simulation. The experimental and numerical results are used to validate the analytical method proposed in previous investigations at the plastic deformation stage and a revised semi-analytical method is proposed in the present study for the large penetration stage.</p>

Abstract:Pitting corrosion is commonly induced in aging ships and marine structures accompanied by fatigue cracks which may be propagated under cyclic loads. The occurrence of these damages contributes to the performance deterioration of ship structures. From the perspective of safety design, it is of great engineering significance to address the residual ultimate strength of the hull plate with coupled damage of pitting corrosion and crack. In this paper, a compression test was conducted for the hull plate to measure the impact of coupled damage on the ultimate strength. An adaptive fixture is carefully designed which can simulate the boundary conditions of plates supported by real stiffeners. Additionally, the mechanical properties of AH36 steel material are determined using a tensile test. Afterward, the ultimate strength results obtained experimentally are used to verify the reliability of those achieved via nonlinear finite element analysis. Based on the basic behavior under monotonic load, a parametric study is undertaken numerically for the hull plate under cyclic load accounting for the influences of accumulative plastic damage, pitting corrosion and crack. Some interesting findings concerning the structural behavior are presented. It is found that the strength degenerates as the corrosion and crack become more serious or the cycle number increases. The influence mechanism of the plastic damage due to the cyclic load is consistent for the plates with different degrees of corrosion and crack. On the basis of 650 datasets by numerical analysis, an accurate empirical formula is proposed for predicting the residual strength of hull plate with coupled damage under cyclic load by using artificial neural networks.

Abstract:Corrosion takes place in the life cycle of ships, resulting in degradation of structural strengths. Corrosion effects with uncertainty on ultimate strength for container ship structures are studied in this paper. On one hand, the ultimate strength of container ship hull girder subject to combined moments of bending and torsion is studied by Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis (NFEA), and the limit state of failure is derived through Minimum Square Error (MSE) technique based on a series of NFEAs, and the probabilistic characteristics under simultaneous uniform corrosions (however, with different scales) in longitudinal structures are studied for the cases of pure bending, pure torsion and combination of both, which can be a useful reference for the scheduled maintenance of container ships. On the other hand, the ultimate strength of bottom stiffened panel under longitudinal thrust derived from hogging conditions is studied considering effects of key factors such as initial deflection, element sizes, simplified boundary conditions, and lateral seawater pressure etc. Uniform and not simultaneous corrosion across different structures is studied, and surrogate models by Gaussian Process (GP) are built, and the corresponding ultimate strength probabilistic characteristics and its dependency on correlation between different structures’ corrosion are studied.

Abstract:Abstract A simple analytical model to estimate the longitudinal strength of ship hulls in composite materials under buckling, material failure and ultimate collapse is presented in this paper. Ship hulls are regarded as assemblies of stiffened panels which idealized as group of plate-stiffener combinations. Ultimate strain of the plate-stiffener combination is predicted under buckling or material failure with composite beam-column theory. The effects of initial imperfection of ship hull and eccentricity of load are included. Corresponding longitudinal strengths of ship hull are derived in a straightforward method. A longitudinally framed ship hull made of symmetrically stacked unidirectional plies under sagging is analyzed. The results indicate that present analytical results have a good agreement with FEM method. The initial deflection of ship hull and eccentricity of load can dramatically reduce the bending capacity of ship hull. The proposed formulations provide a simple but useful tool for the longitudinal strength estimation in practical design.

Abstract:Abstract The assessment of a ship's ability to withstand environmental loads is very crucial. This research focuses on the strength assessment of 600 TEU container ship hulls against hydrostatic and hydrodynamic loads using finite element-based software. Parameter changes in the material types, hull thickness, and ship drafts were performed to compare the structural responses using deformation, strain, and von Mises stress criteria. All of the materials tested were acceptable, where the ASTM A131 Grade AH36 and ASTM A131 Grade AH32 materials have the lowest deformation values and strains. The simulation results regarding plate thickness variation, deformation, strain, and von Mises stress values were smaller as the thickness of the ship structure increased. Moreover, from the draft variation, the structural response due to environmental load was better as the draft of the ship increased.

A Simplified Progressive Collapse Analysis of Ultimate Longitudinal Strength of Ship Structures

Abstract:A simplified procedure is developed for predicting the ultimate strength of hull girder based on the basic progressive collapse method.The normalized stress-strain relationship of structural element is introduced by applying beam-column theory,elastoplastic assumption,and plastic joint theory.The total bending moment is obtained by integrating the contribution of all elements,and the ultimate bending moment is defined by the moment corresponding to the point with zero or negative slope in the moment-curvature relationship.The complete procedure has been coded into a FORTRAN program and tested against four ship/box girder sections. The results obtained from the present program appear to be quite satisfactory.It shows the advantage of present method to predict the ultimate strength of hull girder in ship design.

Abstract:Stiffened panel is a fundamental member of hull structures which is designed to withstand multiple loads such as revered cyclic load and lateral pressure. At present the ultimate strength of stiffened panel is conventionally determined by the monotonic compression criterion, ignoring the real progressive collapse of ship in rough sea conditions. To provide useful insights for improving the ship design, the present study focuses on dealing with the structural collapse characteristics and ultimate strength estimation of continuous stiffened panel under combined longitudinal extreme cyclic load and lateral pressure. A large number of nonlinear finite element analyses (FEA) are conducted to identify the influences of various factors on the failure mode and ultimate strength including the slenderness ratio of local panel, stiffener type, size and number, sequence and amplitude of the cyclic load, cycle number and lateral pressure. It is found that the ultimate limit state behaviours are governed by the coupling effects of several influential parameters. Based on artificial neural networks (ANN), a prediction model with high accuracy is proposed to evaluate the ultimate strength in different cycles.

Abstract:Ultra large container ship (ULCS) structures feature large deck openings and low torsional rigidity. It is essential to accurately evaluate the maximum loading carrying capacity of ship structures. When the ship sails at an oblique heading in rough sea, the horizontal and torsional moments may approach or even exceed the magnitude of vertical bending moment. In such cases, hull girder ultimate strength assessment of container ships under load combinations comprising of vertical bending moment, horizontal bending moment and torsion is necessary in their structural design stage. In this paper, special attentions are thus paid to the hull girder ultimate strength of an ULCS (i.e., a typical 10,000 TEU container ship) subjected to combined three load components mentioned above, which is also a common load case in ships and ship-shaped offshore structures and it is assumed that the three kinds of main loads can be combined each other freely. A series of nonlinear finite element analyses (NFEA) is carried out. Effects of fabrication related initial imperfections are investigated in the present study. Based on the computed numerical results, the 3D hull girder ultimate strength envelope considering initial deformation and incorporating the interaction relationships among three kinds of load components mentioned above is established.

Abstract:Structures’ ultimate strength has been increasingly valued in the past few decades. The model test is an important and reliable way to estimate the ultimate strength. For large and complex structures, like ship hull structures, the test subject is usually scale models due to the limitation of loading capacity and space of laboratories. Therefore, the similarity method and the design of scale models are of great importance. The stiffened plate is the minimum unit that makes up thin-walled structures. The similarity method of the ultimate strength of stiffened plates is the base of the similarity method of large and complex structures. This paper is a further study of an existing similarity method proposed in our previous work. A stiffened plate from a real ship is taken as the subject. 22 combinations of scale ratios are used to design scale models. The 23 models (including the original model) are subjected to a combined load of longitudinal compression and lateral pressure. The non-linear finite element method is used to analyze these models. The results revealed that the previous method is only suitable for scale models with small degrees of geometrical distortion. It didn't consider the effect of geometrical distortions. An improved similarity method and scale model design method are proposed to solve these problems. The improved methods consider the geometrical distortion of scale models and are applicable to more geometrically distorted scale models. More numerical examples are performed to verify the correctness and advantage of the improved methods.
Strength Assessment of Polar Ships under Ice Loads Using Direct Calculation Method

Abstract:New large ships for transportation in the Arctic should be designed to meet the IACS Polar Class Rules. The designs of these vessels bring new challenges to owners, designers, operators and regulators due to the lack of relevant experience. In this study, the complete procedure of evaluation of hull structural strength subject to ice loads is presented. The responses of hull structure are com-puted with nonlinear static FE analysis to assess the structure strength under different ship/ice in-teraction scenarios in addition to Polar rule-defined ice loads. Acceptance criteria using limit load concept from load/deflection curve from the results of nonlinear finite element analysis are intro-duced for shell plating and stiffeners under design ice loads. Linear eigenvalue buckling analyses were carried out to define the critical buckling loads of side stringer for confirming its stability. In this pa-per, the influence of local fine mesh size on limit load and the reliability of the limit load are dis-cussed to improve the procedure of strength assessment of hull subject to ice loads. Suitable fine mesh size is proposed for the nonlinear finite element analysis procedure. Analyses were carried out for the irregular load/deflection curves which may cause inaccurate estimation of limit loads. These analyses can help estimating limit loads more accurately from those irregular load/deflection curves.
A Study of Ultimate Strength for Container Ship Bottom Structures under Bi-axial Loads Considering Corrosion Effects

Abstract:Container ships are widely used and their strength has always been the concern of designers and engineers because of the large openings in deck. Additionally, container ships are of similar arrangements and structures because the containers are of same standards worldwide. So investigation into the strength of typical structures is meaningful. This paper focuses on the ultimate strength of typical bottom structures in container ships under both longitudinal and transverse loads in corrosive environments. On one hand, the ultimate strength of container ship’s bottom structures is calculated by Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis (NFEA), and the limit state of failure (i.e. interaction relation of bi-axial loads) is derived through Minimum Square Error (MSE) technique based on a series of NFEAs; On the other hand, uniform and not simultaneous corrosion across different structures is studied, and surrogate models by Gaussian Process (GP) are built for both longitudinal thrust and transverse thrust ultimate strengths individually, and the corresponding longitudinal and transverse ultimate strength probabilistic characteristics of the typical bottom structures are investigated. Abstract:Crack and corrosion are two kinds of common damage frequently occurring in marine structures, and therefore it is important to analyze their effect on ship ultimate strength. Two kinds of method are used to analyze the ultimate strength, Nonlinear Finite Element Method (NFEM) and Idealized Structural Element (ISUM), which are validated in this paper by ISSC benchmark container ship subjected to bending moment. Among the common crack types of container ships summarized by IACS, seven representative crack types are chosen to apply on three container ships and analyze their effect on the residual ultimate strength. Based on the numerical results, simple equations are fitted to predict residual ultimate strength of cracked container ship. Considering that there is little corrosion data about actual container ships, the corrosion additions ruled by classification societies ABS, CCS and DNV are seemed as the most serious corrosion and then the corrosion effect on residual ultimate strength is analyzed. Abstract:[Objectives] A Roll-on/Roll-off(Ro-Ro)ship is a modern ship type with high technology and high added value. Due to the specification of its structure,a consensus on buckling and fatigue checking for Ro-Ro ships has not been reached among the different classification societies of the world. [Methods] On the basis of analyzing the structural characteristics of Ro-Ro ships,the present study considers the direct calculation of buckling strength,advanced buckling analysis and fatigue analysis of a selected section of a large Ro-Ro ship. The calculations are conducted on the basis of self-developed software from the SJTU KSHIP Project. The pretreatment of buckling and fatigue assessment are established in accordance with the DNV standard "Strength Analysis of Hull Structure of Roll-on/Roll-off Ships and Car Carriers",and the related CCS rules. [Results] The calculated buckling strength, advanced buckling strength and fatigue strength of the target cabin meet the requirements of the related rules.[Conclusions] The contents of this paper have a certain reference value for the related structural analysis of Ro-Ro ships.

Abstract:In this paper,three-dimension structural design of the cargo holds of a container ship is realized based on NAPA Steel with the output of two-dimension CAD drawings.At the same time,the initial finite element model is directly produced on the basis of designed structure model,then the FE model is modified according to CCS rules requested.MSC.Nastran is applied to the strength analysis and calculation of buckling to obtain the detailed results of the structural deformation and stress.The structural design is improved according to the assessment results.Compared with the traditional two-dimension structural design pattern,three-dimension structureal design method based on commercial softwares can improve the quality and efficiency of the design effectively.

Abstract:The design and load-bearing characteristics of connection joints are the main factors restricting the load-bearing capacity of composite hull structures. In the present paper, the transition joint between the deck and the broadside of the main hull is designed and manufactured by combining bolt connection and cementing, which provides a reference for the design of large-scale composite hull structure. Based on Shokrieh-Hashin criterion and coherent zone modeling method, the simulation method of progressive failure of complex composite structures is improved and renewed. The test results show that the failure mode and ultimate load predicted by numerical method are in good agreement with the test results. Based on the numerical calculation method, the influences of the overlap width d of the hat profile and the overlap width s of the hand-pasted reinforced area on the strain, displacement and ultimate bearing capacity of the joint are quantitatively analyzed, and the optimal scheme of the full-scale deck-side joint is formed, which provides support for the design of large-scale marine composite joint.
