Abstract:A quantum mechanical observer might be describable as having a reference system that is a superposition of classical inertial reference frames. The present paper suggests a possible weighting function in such superpositions, determined by the product of the observer's wavefunction and the Fourier transform of the wavefunction at each point in phase space. This suggestion is made because each of these factors has a simple interpretation as a probability density amplitude. Other forms for the weighting function may well be possible.

Abstract:Quantum trajectories are Markov processes describing the evolution of a quantum system subject to indirect measurements. They can be viewed as place dependent iterated function systems or the result of products of dependent and non identically distributed random matrices. In this article, we establish a complete classification of their invariant measures. The classification is done in two steps. First, we prove a Markov process on some linear subspaces called dark subspaces, defined in (Maassen, Kümmerer 2006), admits a unique invariant measure. Second, we study the process inside the dark subspaces. Using a notion of minimal family of isometries from a reference space to dark subspaces, we prove a set of measures indexed by orbits of a unitary group is the set of ergodic measures of quantum trajectories.

Abstract:Phase is a basic ingredient for quantum states since quantum mechanics uses complex numbers to describe quantum states. In this letter, we introduce a rigorous framework to quantify the phase of quantum states. To do so, we regard phase as a quantum resource, and specify the free states and free operations. We determine the conditions a phase measure should satisfy and provide some phase measures. We also propose the notion of intrinsic phase for quantum states.

Abstract:We use a novel form of quantum conditional probability to define new measures of quantum information in a dynamical context. We explore relationships between our new quantities and standard measures of quantum information, such as von Neumann entropy. These quantities allow us to find new proofs of some standard results in quantum information theory, such as the concavity of von Neumann entropy and Holevo's theorem. The existence of an underlying probability distribution helps shed light on the conceptual underpinnings of these results.

Abstract:A recent approach [Bohmann and Agudelo, Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 133601 (2020)] allows for the discriminating and noise-tolerant detection of non-classical behaviour of quantum states. But it does not provide a sensitive measure for the quantumness of states; to date no such measure is known. We amend Bohmann and Agudelo's approach such that it inherits the multiple strengths of the original proposal whilst providing a quantumness measure, {\Xi}. {\Xi} is discriminating, exquisitely sensitive and grows monotonically with an increase in the system's non-classical excitations.

Abstract:We propose a realistic, spacetime interpretation of quantum theory in which reality constitutes a *single* history obeying a "law of motion" that makes definite, but incomplete, predictions about its behavior. We associate a "quantum measure" |S| to the set S of histories, and point out that |S| fulfills a sum rule generalizing that of classical probability theory. We interpret |S| as a "propensity", making this precise by stating a criterion for |S|=0 to imply "preclusion" (meaning that the true history will not lie in S). The criterion involves triads of correlated events, and in application to electron-electron scattering, for example, it yields definite predictions about the electron trajectories themselves, independently of any measuring devices which might or might not be present. (So we can give an objective account of measurements.) Two unfinished aspects of the interpretation involve *conditonal* preclusion (which apparently requires a notion of coarse-graining for its formulation) and the need to "locate spacetime regions in advance" without the aid of a fixed background metric (which can be achieved in the context of conditional preclusion via a construction which makes sense both in continuum gravity and in the discrete setting of causal set theory).

Phase space measures of information flow in open systems: A quantum and classical perspective of non-Markovianity

Abstract:The exchange of information between an open quantum system and its environment, especially the backflow of information from the environment to the open system associated with quantum notions of non-Markovianity, is a widely discussed topic for years now. This information flow can be quantified by means of the trace distance of pairs of quantum states which provides a measure for the distinguishability of the states. The same idea can also be used to characterize the information flow in classical open systems through a suitable distance measure for their probability distributions on phase space. Here, we investigate the connection between the trace distance based quantum measure and the Kolmogorov distance for differently ordered quasi-probability distributions on phase space. In particular, we show that for any pair of quantum states one can find a unique quasi-probability distribution for which the Kolmogorov distance coincides with the trace distance. We further study the quantum-to-classical transition of the distance measures. Employing the Caldeira-Legget model of quantum Brownian motion as a prototypical example, numerical simulations indicate a particularly rapid convergence of the Kolmogorov distance of the Wigner functions to the trace distance in the classical uncertainty limit, which establishes the Wigner function distance as an optimal tool for measuring semi-classical information backflow and for quantifying non-Markovianity in open continuous variable quantum systems.

Abstract:Measure theory is used in physics, not just to capture classical probability, but also to quantify the number of states. In previous works, we found that state quantification plays a foundational role in classical mechanics, and therefore, we set ourselves to construct the quantum equivalent of the Liouville measure. Unlike the classical counterpart, this quantized measure is non-additive and has a unitary lower bound (i.e. no set of states can have less than one state). Conversely, requiring that state quantification is finite for finite continuous regions and that each state counts as one already implies non-additivity, which in turn implies the failure of classical theory. In this article we show these preliminary results and outline a new line of inquiry that may provide a different insight into the foundations of quantum theory. Additionally, this new approach may prove to be useful to those interested in a quantized theory of space-time, as we believe this requires a quantized measure for the quantification of the independent degrees of freedom.

Abstract:Using a simple relation of the Dirac delta-function to generalized the theta-function, the relationship between the tomographic probability approach and the quantum probability measure approach with the description of quantum states is discussed. The quantum state tomogram expressed in terms of the mean value of the operator delta-function is shown to be equal to the partial derivative of the distribution function of the quantum probability measure. For spin states, the spin tomogram expressed in terms of the mean value of the operator Kronecker delta-function is related to the corresponding density operator for the quantum probability measure associated with the discrete variable. The star-product of symplectic quantum measures is studied and the evolution equation for symplectic quantum measures is derived.

Measurement and Probability in Relativistic Quantum Mechanics

Abstract:Ultimately, any explanation of quantum measurement must be extendable to relativistic quantum mechanics (RQM), since many precisely confirmed experimental results follow from quantum field theory (QFT), which is based on RQM. Certainly, the traditional "collapse" postulate for quantum measurement is problematic in a relativistic context, at the very least because, as usually formulated, it violates the relativity of simultaneity. Among alternatives to the traditional collapse interpretation, the Everettian approach of an unmodified, unitary quantum formalism is the only one that has been clearly extended to RQM and QFT. However, the usual "many worlds" interpretation of such an approach leads to to difficulty in how to even define probabilities over different possible "worlds". The present paper addresses this difficulty by providing a relativistic model of measurement, in which the state of the universe is decomposed into decoherent histories of measurements recorded within it. Zurek's concept of envariance can be generalized to this context of relativistic spacetime, giving an objective definition of the probability of any one of these quantum histories, consistent with Born's rule. This then leads to the statistics of any repeated experiment also tending to follow the Born rule as the number of repetitions increases. The wave functions that we actually use for such experiments are local reductions of very coarse-grained superpositions of universal eigenstates, and their "collapse" can be re-interpreted as simply an update based on additional incremental knowledge gained from a measurement about the "real" eigenstate of our universe.

Banach space formalism of quantum mechanics

Abstract:This paper presents a generalization of quantum mechanics from conventional Hilbert space formalism to Banach space one. We construct quantum theory starting with any complex Banach space beyond a complex Hilbert space, through using a basic fact that a complex Banach space always admits a semi-inner product. Precisely, in a complex Banach space $\mathbb{X}$ with a given semi-inner product, a pure state is defined by Lumer \cite{Lumer1961} to be a bounded linear functional on the space of bounded operators determined by a normalized element of $\mathbb{X}$ under the semi-inner product, and then the state space $\mathcal{S} (\mathbb{X})$ of the system is the weakly closed convex set spanned by all pure states. Based on Lumer's notion of the state, we associate a quantum system with a complex Banach space $\mathbb{X}$ equipped with a fixed semi-inner product, and then define a physical event at a quantum state $\omega \in \mathcal{S}(\mathbb{X})$ to be a projection $P$ (bounded operator such that $P^2 =P$) in $\mathbb{X}$ satisfying the positivity condition $0 \le \omega (P) \le 1,$ and a physical quantity at a quantum state $\omega$ to be a spectral operator of scalar type with real spectrum so that the associated spectral projections are all physical events at $\omega.$ The Born formula for measurement of a physical quantity is the natural pairing of operators with linear functionals satisfying the probability conservation law. A time evolution of the system is governed by a one-parameter group of invertible spectral operators determined by a scalar type operator with the real spectrum, which satisfies the Schrödinger equation. Our formulation is just a generalization of the Dirac-von Neumann formalism of quantum mechanics to the Banach space setting. We include some examples for illustration.

Abstract:The emergence of classical behaviour in quantum theory is often ascribed to the interaction of a quantum system with its environment, which can be interpreted as environmental monitoring of the system. As a result, off-diagonal elements of the density matrix of the system are damped in the basis of a preferred observable, often taken to be the position, leading to the phenomenon of decoherence. This effect can be modelled dynamically in terms of a Lindblad equation driven by the position operator. Here the question of decoherence resulting from a monitoring of position and momentum, i.e. a phase-space measurement, by the environment is addressed. There is no standard quantum observable corresponding to the detection of phase-space points, which is forbidden by Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. This issue is addressed by use of a coherent-state-based positive operator-valued measure (POVM) for modelling phase-space monitoring by the environment. In this scheme, decoherence in phase space implies the diagonalisation of the density matrix in both position and momentum representations. This is shown to be linked to a Lindblad dynamics where position and momentum appear as two independent Lindblad operators.

Abstract:We develop and defend the thesis that the Hilbert space formalism of quantum mechanics is a new theory of probability. The theory, like its classical counterpart, consists of an algebra of events, and the probability measures defined on it. The construction proceeds in the following steps: (a) Axioms for the algebra of events are introduced following Birkhoff and von Neumann. All axioms, except the one that expresses the uncertainty principle, are shared with the classical event space. The only models for the set of axioms are lattices of subspaces of inner product spaces over a field K. (b) Another axiom due to Soler forces K to be the field of real, or complex numbers, or the quaternions. We suggest a probabilistic reading of Soler's axiom. (c) Gleason's theorem fully characterizes the probability measures on the algebra of events, so that Born's rule is derived. (d) Gleason's theorem is equivalent to the existence of a certain finite set of rays, with a particular orthogonality graph (Wondergraph). Consequently, all aspects of quantum probability can be derived from rational probability assignments to finite "quantum gambles". We apply the approach to the analysis of entanglement, Bell inequalities, and the quantum theory of macroscopic objects. We also discuss the relation of the present approach to quantum logic, realism and truth, and the measurement problem.

Abstract:Weak measurements performed between quantum state preparation and post-selection result in complex values for self-adjoint operators, corresponding to complex conditional probabilities for the projections on specific eigenstates. In this paper, it is shown that the complex phases of these weak conditional probabilities describe the dynamic response of the system to unitary transformations. Quantum mechanics thus unifies the statistical overlap of different states with the dynamical structure of transformations between these states. Specifically, it is possible to identify the phase of weak conditional probabilities directly with the action of a unitary transform that maximizes the overlap of initial and final states. This action provides a quantitative measure of how much quantum correlations can diverge from the deterministic relations between physical properties expected from classical physics or hidden variable theories. In terms of quantum information, the phases of weak conditional probabilities thus represent the logical tension between sets of three quantum states that is at the heart of quantum paradoxes.

Abstract:Quantum measure theory can be introduced as a histories based reformulation (and generalisation) of Copenhagen quantum mechanics in the image of classical stochastic theories. These classical models lend themselves to a simple interpretation in which a single history (a single element of the sample space) is deemed to be 'real'; we require only that this real history should not be ruled out by the dynamics, the axioms of which ensure that not all histories are precluded. However, applying this interpretation naively to quantum measure theory we can find experimentally realisable systems (notably the Peres-Kochen-Specker system) in which every history is ruled out by the dynamics, challenging us to formulate a deeper realist framework. Our first response is to hold on to our existing interpretative framework and attempt a revision of the dynamics that would reduce quantum measure theory to a classical dynamics. We explore this approach by examining the histories formulation of a stochastic-collapse model on a simple (discrete) null-lattice, concluding that the drawbacks of this approach outweigh the benefits. Our second response is to abandon our classically inspired interpretation in favour of Sorkin's 'co-events', a more general ontology that still allows for strict realism. In this case the 'potentially real' objects of the theory (the 'beables' in Bell's language) are not individual histories but truth valuation maps, or co-events. We develop & evaluate various co-event schemes that have been suggested to date, finally adopting the multiplicative scheme; the current working model of co-event theory and a promising interpretation of quantum measure theory, though still a work in progress. We conclude by exploring the expression of the dynamics & predictions in this new framework.
