Abstract:This paper presents a generalization of quantum mechanics from conventional Hilbert space formalism to Banach space one. We construct quantum theory starting with any complex Banach space beyond a complex Hilbert space, through using a basic fact that a complex Banach space always admits a semi-inner product. Precisely, in a complex Banach space $\mathbb{X}$ with a given semi-inner product, a pure state is defined by Lumer \cite{Lumer1961} to be a bounded linear functional on the space of bounded operators determined by a normalized element of $\mathbb{X}$ under the semi-inner product, and then the state space $\mathcal{S} (\mathbb{X})$ of the system is the weakly closed convex set spanned by all pure states. Based on Lumer's notion of the state, we associate a quantum system with a complex Banach space $\mathbb{X}$ equipped with a fixed semi-inner product, and then define a physical event at a quantum state $\omega \in \mathcal{S}(\mathbb{X})$ to be a projection $P$ (bounded operator such that $P^2 =P$) in $\mathbb{X}$ satisfying the positivity condition $0 \le \omega (P) \le 1,$ and a physical quantity at a quantum state $\omega$ to be a spectral operator of scalar type with real spectrum so that the associated spectral projections are all physical events at $\omega.$ The Born formula for measurement of a physical quantity is the natural pairing of operators with linear functionals satisfying the probability conservation law. A time evolution of the system is governed by a one-parameter group of invertible spectral operators determined by a scalar type operator with the real spectrum, which satisfies the Schrödinger equation. Our formulation is just a generalization of the Dirac-von Neumann formalism of quantum mechanics to the Banach space setting. We include some examples for illustration.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to generalize the formalization of quantum mechanics from the traditional Hilbert - space formalization to the Banach - space formalization. Specifically, the author attempts to construct a quantum theory in an arbitrary complex Banach space, define pure states, physical events and physical quantities by using the concept of semi - inner product, and propose a complete quantum - mechanical framework based on these concepts. ### Main problems 1. **Generalizing quantum mechanics**: - Traditional quantum mechanics is based on the formalization of Hilbert space, but the author hopes to generalize it to the more general Banach space. - By using the concept of semi - inner product, the author can define pure states, physical events and physical quantities in an arbitrary complex Banach space. 2. **Defining pure states and physical events**: - A pure state is defined as a bounded linear functional determined by a normalized element. - A physical event is defined as a projection operator \(P\) that satisfies \(0\leq\omega(P)\leq1\), where \(\omega\) is a pure state. 3. **Defining physical quantities**: - A physical quantity is defined as a scalar - type operator with a real spectrum, and its corresponding spectral projection is a physical event. 4. **Measurement and time evolution**: - The Born formula for measurement is defined as the natural pairing of an operator and a linear functional, which satisfies the law of probability conservation. - The time evolution of a system is determined by a one - parameter group of invertible scalar - type operators, which satisfy the Schrödinger equation. ### Specific steps 1. **Preliminary definitions**: - The basic concepts of spectral operators and semi - inner products are introduced. - Physical events and physical quantities are defined, and their basic properties are studied. 2. **Banach - space formalization of quantum mechanics**: - Four basic assumptions are proposed: the state assumption, the observable assumption, the measurement assumption and the evolution assumption. - These assumptions generalize the traditional Dirac - von Neumann formalization to Banach space. 3. **Examples**: - The physical meanings of these concepts in Banach space are illustrated through specific examples. ### Conclusion The author has successfully generalized the formalization of quantum mechanics from Hilbert space to Banach space, providing a new mathematical framework for describing quantum systems. This not only expands the scope of application of quantum mechanics, but may also have heuristic value in practical applications.
