Abstract:We formulate a Born rule for families of quantum systems parametrized by a noncommutative space of control parameters. The resulting formalism may be viewed as a generalization of quantum mechanics where overlaps take values in a noncommutative algebra, rather than in the complex numbers.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss the relevance of the algebraic approach to quantum phenomena first introduced by von Neumann before he confessed to Birkoff that he no longer believed in Hilbert space. This approach is more general and allows us to see the structure of quantum processes in terms of non-commutative probability theory, a non-Boolean structure of the implicate order which contains Boolean sub-structures which accommodates the explicate classical world. We move away from mechanical `waves' and `particles' and take as basic what Bohm called a {\em structure process}. This enables us to learn new lessons that can have a wider application in the way we think of structures in language and thought itself.

Abstract:We develop a version of quantum mechanics that can handle nonassociative algebras of observables and which reduces to standard quantum theory in the traditional associative setting. Our algebraic approach is naturally probabilistic and is based on using the universal enveloping algebra of a general nonassociative algebra to introduce a generalized notion of associative composition product. We formulate properties of states together with notions of trace, and use them to develop GNS constructions. We describe Heisenberg and Schrödinger pictures of completely positive dynamics, and we illustrate our formalism on the explicit examples of finite-dimensional matrix Jordan algebras as well as the octonion algebra.

Abstract:We consider classical and quantum mechanics related to an additional noncommutativity, symmetric in position and momentum coordinates. We show that such mechanical system can be transformed to the corresponding one which allows employment of the usual formalism. In particular, we found explicit connections between quadratic Hamiltonians and Lagrangians, in their commutative and noncommutative regimes. In the quantum case we give general procedure how to compute Feynman's path integral in this noncommutative phase space with quadratic Lagrangians (Hamiltonians). This approach is applied to a charged particle in the noncommutative plane exposed to constant homogeneous electric and magnetic fields.

Abstract:We formulate a discrete two-state stochastic process with elementary rules that give rise to Born statistics and reproduce the probabilities from the Schrödinger equation under an associated Hamiltonian matrix, which we identify. We define the probability to observe a state, classical or quantum, in proportion to the number of \textit{events} at that state--number of ways a walker may materialize at a point of observation at time t through a sequence of transitions starting from known initial state at t=0. The quantum stochastic process differs from its classical counterpart in that the quantum walker is a pair of qubits, each transmitted independently through all possible paths to a point of observation, and whose recombination may produce a positive or negative event (classical events are never negative). We represent the state of the walker via a square matrix of recombination events, show that the indeterminacy of the qubit state amounts to rotations of this matrix, and show that the Born rule counts the number qubits on this matrix that remain invariant over a full rotation.

Quantum Probability via the Method of Arbitrary Functions

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to apply the collection of mathematical tools known as the "method of arbitrary functions" to analyze how probability arises from quantum dynamics. We argue that in a toy model of quantum measurement the Born rule probabilities can be derived from the unitary Schrödinger dynamics when certain dynamical parameters are treated as themselves random variables with initial probability distributions. Specifically, we study the perturbed double well model, in which the perturbation is treated as a random variable, and we show that for arbitrary initial distributions within a certain class, the dynamics yields the Born rule probabilities in the joint limits given by long times and small values of Planck's constant (the classical limit). Our results establish the Born rule as a type of universal limiting behavior that is independent of the precise initial dynamical parameters.

Abstract:This paper presents a generalization of quantum mechanics from conventional Hilbert space formalism to Banach space one. We construct quantum theory starting with any complex Banach space beyond a complex Hilbert space, through using a basic fact that a complex Banach space always admits a semi-inner product. Precisely, in a complex Banach space $\mathbb{X}$ with a given semi-inner product, a pure state is defined by Lumer \cite{Lumer1961} to be a bounded linear functional on the space of bounded operators determined by a normalized element of $\mathbb{X}$ under the semi-inner product, and then the state space $\mathcal{S} (\mathbb{X})$ of the system is the weakly closed convex set spanned by all pure states. Based on Lumer's notion of the state, we associate a quantum system with a complex Banach space $\mathbb{X}$ equipped with a fixed semi-inner product, and then define a physical event at a quantum state $\omega \in \mathcal{S}(\mathbb{X})$ to be a projection $P$ (bounded operator such that $P^2 =P$) in $\mathbb{X}$ satisfying the positivity condition $0 \le \omega (P) \le 1,$ and a physical quantity at a quantum state $\omega$ to be a spectral operator of scalar type with real spectrum so that the associated spectral projections are all physical events at $\omega.$ The Born formula for measurement of a physical quantity is the natural pairing of operators with linear functionals satisfying the probability conservation law. A time evolution of the system is governed by a one-parameter group of invertible spectral operators determined by a scalar type operator with the real spectrum, which satisfies the Schrödinger equation. Our formulation is just a generalization of the Dirac-von Neumann formalism of quantum mechanics to the Banach space setting. We include some examples for illustration.

Abstract:This article concludes our critical analysis on the role of non-commutativity in quantum theory. After a brief introduction of the necessary notions on point processes, we re-analyse model B proposed in "On non-commutativity in quantum theory (II): toy models for non-commutative kinematics", using the point process theory. This viewpoint allows to generalize and modify the space process of model B in a simple manner, obtaining a new model (model C). This new model allows the recovery of non-relativistic quantum mechanics in a suitable limit.

Quantum harmonic oscillator in a time dependent noncommutative background

Abstract:This work explores the behaviour of a noncommutative harmonic oscillator in a time-dependent background, as previously investigated in [1]. Specifically, we examine the system when expressed in terms of commutative variables, utilizing a generalized form of the standard Bopp-shift relations recently introduced in [2]. We solved the time dependent system and obtained the analytical form of the eigenfunction using the method of Lewis invariants, which is associated with the Ermakov-Pinney equation, a non-linear differential equation. We then obtain exact analytical solution set for the Ermakov-Pinney equation. With these solutions in place, we move on to compute the dynamics of the energy expectation value analytically and explore their graphical representations for various solution sets of the Ermakov-Pinney equation, associated with a particular choice of quantum number. Finally, we determined the generalized form of the uncertainty equality relations among the operators for both commutative and noncommutative cases. Expectedly, our study is consistent with the findings in [1], specifically in a particular limit where the coordinate mapping relations reduce to the standard Bopp-shift relations.

Abstract:The Weyl correspondence and the related Wigner formalism lie at the core of traditional quantum mechanics. We discuss here an alternative quantization scheme, whose idea goes back to Born and Jordan, and which has recently been revived in another context, namely time-frequency analysis. We show that in particular the uncertainty principle does not enjoy full symplectic covariance properties in the Born and Jordan scheme, as opposed to what happens in the Weyl quantization.

Abstract:An external magnetic field in configuration space coupled to quantum dynamics induces noncommutativity in its velocity momentum space. By phase space duality, an external vector potential in the conjugate momentum sector of the system induces noncommutativity in its configuration space. Such a rationale for noncommutativity is explored herein for an arbitrary configuration space of Euclidean geometry. Ordinary quantum mechanics with a commutative configuration space is revisited first. Through the introduction of an arbitrary positive definite *-product, a one-to-one correspondence between the Hilbert space of abstract quantum states and that of the enveloping algebra of the position quantum operators is identified. A parallel discussion is then presented when configuration space is noncommutative, and thoroughly analysed when the conjugate magnetic field is momentum independent and nondegenerate. Once again the space of quantum states may be identified with the enveloping algebra of the noncommutative position quantum operators. Furthermore, when the positive definite *-product is adapted to the conjugate magnetic field, the coordinate operators span a Fock algebra of which the coherent states are the analogues of the structureless points in a commutative configuration space. These results generalise and justify a posteriori within ordinary canonical quantisation the heuristic approach to quantum mechanics in the noncommutative Euclidean plane as constructed and developed by F. G. Scholtz and his collaborators.

Coherent control from quantum committment probabilities

Abstract:We introduce a general definition of a quantum committor in order to clarify reaction mechanisms and facilitate control in processes where coherent effects are important. With a quantum committor, we generalize the notion of a transition state to quantum superpositions and quantify the effect of interference on the progress of the reaction. The formalism is applicable to any linear quantum master equation supporting metastability for which absorbing boundary conditions designating the reactant and product states can be applied. We use this formalism to determine the dependence of the quantum transition state on coherences in a polaritonic system and optimize the initialization state of a conical intersection model to control reactive outcomes, achieving yields of the desired state approaching 100%. In addition to providing a practical tool, the quantum committor provides a conceptual framework for understanding reactions in cases when classical intuitions fail.

Noncommutative Number Systems for Quantum Information

Abstract:Dirac talked about q-numbers versus c-numbers. Quantum observables are q-number variables that generally do not commute among themselves. He was proposing to have a generalized form of numbers as elements of a noncommutative algebra. That was Dirac's appreciation of the mathematical properties of the physical quantities as presented in Heisenberg's new quantum theory. After all, the familiar real, or complex, number system only came into existence through the history of mathematics. Values of physical quantities having a commutative product is an assumption that is not compatible with quantum physics. The revolutionary idea of Heisenberg and Dirac was pulled back to a much more conservative setting by the work of Schrödinger, followed by Born and Bohr. What Bohr missed is that the real number values we obtained from our measurements are only a consequence of the design of the kind of experiments and our using real numbers to calibrate the output scales of our apparatus. It is only our modeling of the information obtained about the physical quantities rather than what Nature dictates. We have proposed an explicit notion of definite noncommutative values of observables that gives a picture of quantum mechanics as realistic as the classical theory. In this article, we illustrate how matrices can be taken as noncommutative (q-)numbers serving as the values of physical quantities, each to be seen as a piece of quantum information. Our main task is to clarify the subtle issues involved in setting up a conventional scheme assigning matrices as values to the physical quantities.

Abstract:According to the Born rule, the probability density in quantum theory is determined by the square of the wave function. A generally accepted derivation of this rule has not yet been proposed. In the given work, a simple physical picture is constructed within which the Born rule arises in a natural way. In the proposed scheme, the interaction of a particle with a measuring apparatus is equivalent to creation of a "mirror image" of particle wave function in the space region of interaction. The observable quantity is the product of the particle wave function and its "image". The phase of the latter is reversed due to Newton's third law, thus leading to the Born rule.

Abstract:I. The arena of quantum mechanics and quantum field theory is the abstract, unobserved and unobservable, M-dimensional formal Hilbert space [not equal to] spacetime. II. The arena of observations and, more generally, of all events (i.e. everything) in the real physical world, is the classical 4-dimensional physical spacetime. III. The "Born Rule" is the random process "magically" transforming I. into II. Wavefunctions are superposed and entangled only in the abstract space I., never in spacetime II. Attempted formulations of quantum theory directly in real physical spacetime actually constitute examples of "locally real" theories, as defined by Clauser & Horne, and are therefore already empirically refuted by the numerous tests of Bell's theorem in real, controlled experiments in laboratories here on Earth. Observed quantum entities, i.e. events, are never superposed or entangled as they: 1) Exclusively "live" (manifest) in real physical spacetime, 2) Are not described by entangled wavefunctions after "measurement", effectuated by III. When separated and treated correctly in this way, a number of fundamental problems and "paradoxes" of quantum theory vs. relativity (i.e. spacetime) simply vanish, such as the black hole information paradox, infinite zero-point energy of quantum field theory and quantization of general relativity.

Abstract:We propose a complete proof of the Born rule using an additional postulate stating that for a short enough time {\Delta}t between two measurements, a property of a particle will keep its values fixed. This dynamical postulate allows us to produce the Born rule in its explicit form by improving the result given in [1]. While the proposed postulate is still not part of the quantum mechanics postulates, every experiment obeys it, and it can not be deduced using the standard postulates of quantum mechanics.

Abstract:We present a novel approach to quantizing the length in noncommutative spaces with positional-dependent noncommutativity. The method involves constructing ladder operators that change the length not only along a plane but also along the third direction due to a noncommutative parameter that is a combination of canonical/Weyl-Moyal type and Lie algebraic type. The primary quantization of length in canonical-type noncommutative space takes place only on a plane, while in the present case, it happens in all three directions. We establish an operator algebra that allows for the raising or lowering of eigenvalues of the operator corresponding to the square of the length. We also attempt to determine how the obtained ladder operators act on different states and work out the eigenvalues of the square of the length operator in terms of eigenvalues corresponding to the ladder operators. We conclude by discussing the results obtained.
