Abstract:For $n\in\mathbb{N}$ and $q\in [0,1[$, the Vaksman-Soibelman quantum sphere $S^{2n+1}_q$ is described by an associative algebra $\mathcal{A}(S^{2n+1}_q)$ deforming the algebra of polynomial functions on the 2n+1 dimensional unit sphere. Its C*-enveloping algebra is known to be independent of the deformation parameter q. In contrast to what happens in the C*-algebraic setting, we show here that, for all $q,q'$ in the above range, $\mathcal{A}(S^{2n+1}_q)$ is isomorphic to $\mathcal{A}(S^{2n+1}_{q'})$ only if $q=q'$.

Abstract:We introduce and study two new examples of noncommutative spheres: the half-liberated sphere, and the free sphere. Together with the usual sphere, these two spheres have the property that the corresponding quantum isometry group is "easy", in the representation theory sense. We present as well some general comments on the axiomatization problem, and on the "untwisted" and "non-easy" case.

Abstract:Dirac talked about q-numbers versus c-numbers. Quantum observables are q-number variables that generally do not commute among themselves. He was proposing to have a generalized form of numbers as elements of a noncommutative algebra. That was Dirac's appreciation of the mathematical properties of the physical quantities as presented in Heisenberg's new quantum theory. After all, the familiar real, or complex, number system only came into existence through the history of mathematics. Values of physical quantities having a commutative product is an assumption that is not compatible with quantum physics. The revolutionary idea of Heisenberg and Dirac was pulled back to a much more conservative setting by the work of Schrödinger, followed by Born and Bohr. What Bohr missed is that the real number values we obtained from our measurements are only a consequence of the design of the kind of experiments and our using real numbers to calibrate the output scales of our apparatus. It is only our modeling of the information obtained about the physical quantities rather than what Nature dictates. We have proposed an explicit notion of definite noncommutative values of observables that gives a picture of quantum mechanics as realistic as the classical theory. In this article, we illustrate how matrices can be taken as noncommutative (q-)numbers serving as the values of physical quantities, each to be seen as a piece of quantum information. Our main task is to clarify the subtle issues involved in setting up a conventional scheme assigning matrices as values to the physical quantities.

Abstract:This article concludes our critical analysis on the role of non-commutativity in quantum theory. After a brief introduction of the necessary notions on point processes, we re-analyse model B proposed in "On non-commutativity in quantum theory (II): toy models for non-commutative kinematics", using the point process theory. This viewpoint allows to generalize and modify the space process of model B in a simple manner, obtaining a new model (model C). This new model allows the recovery of non-relativistic quantum mechanics in a suitable limit.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to present an introduction to a point of view for discrete foundations of physics. In taking a discrete stance, we find that the initial expression of physical theory must occur in a context of noncommutative algebra and noncommutative vector analysis. In this way the formalism of quantum mechanics occurs first, but not necessarily with the usual interpretations. The basis for this work is a non-commutative discrete calculus and the observation that it takes one tick of the discrete clock to measure momentum.

Abstract:In the talk, I briefly demonstrate the quantum theory for mesoscopic electric circuits and its applications. In the theory, the importance of the charge discreteness in a mesoscopic electric circuit is addressed. As a result, a new kind of commutation relation for electric charge and current occurred inevitably. The charge representation, canonical current representation and pseudo-current representation are discussed extensively. It not only provides a concrete realization of mathematical models which discuss the space quantization in high energy physics and quantum gravity but also presents a sequence of applications in condensed matter physics from a different point of view. A possible generalization to coupled circuits is also proposed.

Abstract:An external magnetic field in configuration space coupled to quantum dynamics induces noncommutativity in its velocity momentum space. By phase space duality, an external vector potential in the conjugate momentum sector of the system induces noncommutativity in its configuration space. Such a rationale for noncommutativity is explored herein for an arbitrary configuration space of Euclidean geometry. Ordinary quantum mechanics with a commutative configuration space is revisited first. Through the introduction of an arbitrary positive definite *-product, a one-to-one correspondence between the Hilbert space of abstract quantum states and that of the enveloping algebra of the position quantum operators is identified. A parallel discussion is then presented when configuration space is noncommutative, and thoroughly analysed when the conjugate magnetic field is momentum independent and nondegenerate. Once again the space of quantum states may be identified with the enveloping algebra of the noncommutative position quantum operators. Furthermore, when the positive definite *-product is adapted to the conjugate magnetic field, the coordinate operators span a Fock algebra of which the coherent states are the analogues of the structureless points in a commutative configuration space. These results generalise and justify a posteriori within ordinary canonical quantisation the heuristic approach to quantum mechanics in the noncommutative Euclidean plane as constructed and developed by F. G. Scholtz and his collaborators.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss the relevance of the algebraic approach to quantum phenomena first introduced by von Neumann before he confessed to Birkoff that he no longer believed in Hilbert space. This approach is more general and allows us to see the structure of quantum processes in terms of non-commutative probability theory, a non-Boolean structure of the implicate order which contains Boolean sub-structures which accommodates the explicate classical world. We move away from mechanical `waves' and `particles' and take as basic what Bohm called a {\em structure process}. This enables us to learn new lessons that can have a wider application in the way we think of structures in language and thought itself.

Abstract:We study two quantum mechanical systems on the noncommutative plane using a representation independent approach. First, in the context of the Landau problem, we obtain an explicit expression for the gauge transformation that connects the Landau and the symmetric gauge in noncommutative space. This lead us to conclude that the usual form of the symmetric gauge $\vec{A}=\left(-\frac{\beta}{2}\hat{Y},\frac{\beta}{2}\hat{X}\right)$, in which the constant $\beta$ is interpreted as the magnetic field, is not true in noncommutative space. We also be able to establish a precise definition of $\beta$ as function of the magnetic field, for which the equivalence between the symmetric and Landau gauges is hold in noncommutative plane. Using the symmetric gauge we obtain results for the spectrum of the Quantum Hall system, its transverse conductivity in the presence of an electric field and other static observables. These results amend the literature on Quantum Hall Effect in noncommutative plane in which the incorrect form of the symmetric gauge, in noncommutative space, is assumed. We also study the non-equilibrium dynamics of simple observables for this system. On the other hand, we study the dynamics of the harmonic oscillator in non-commutative space and show that, in general, it exhibit quasi-periodic behavior, in striking contrast with its commutative version. The study of the dynamics reveals itself as a most powerful tool to characterize and understand the effects of non-commutativity.

Centered on noncommutative calculus we describe the physical concepts and mathematical structures appearing in the analysis of large quantum systems, and their consequences. These include the emergence of algebraic approach and the necessity of employment of infinite dimensional structures. As an illustration, a quantization of stochastic processes, new formalism for statistical mechanics, quantum field theory and quantum correlations are discussed.

Abstract:This paper is divided in four parts. In the introduction, we discuss the program and the motivations of this paper. In section 2, we introduce the non-Archimedean field of Euclidean numbers E and we present a summary of the theory of {\Lambda}-limits which can be considered as a different approach to nonstandard methods. In the third part (section 3), we define axiomatically the space of ultrafunctions which are a kind of generalized function based on the field of Euclidean numbers E. Finally, we describe an application of the previus theory to the formalism of classical Quantum Mecanics.

Abstract:We explore finite-field frameworks for quantum theory and quantum computation. The simplest theory, defined over unrestricted finite fields, is unnaturally strong. A second framework employs only finite fields with no solution to x^2+1=0, and thus permits an elegant complex representation of the extended field by adjoining i=\sqrt{-1}. Quantum theories over these fields recover much of the structure of conventional quantum theory except for the condition that vanishing inner products arise only from null states; unnaturally strong computational power may still occur. Finally, we are led to consider one more framework, with further restrictions on the finite fields, that recovers a local transitive order and a locally-consistent notion of inner product with a new notion of cardinal probability. In this framework, conventional quantum mechanics and quantum computation emerge locally (though not globally) as the size of the underlying field increases. Interestingly, the framework allows one to choose separate finite fields for system description and for measurement: the size of the first field quantifies the resources needed to describe the system and the size of the second quantifies the resources used by the observer. This resource-based perspective potentially provides insights into quantitative measures for actual computational power, the complexity of quantum system definition and evolution, and the independent question of the cost of the measurement process.

Abstract:We study two classes of quantum spheres and hyperboloids, one class consisting of homogeneous spaces, which are -quantum spaces for the quantum orthogonal group . We construct line bundles over the quantum homogeneous space associated with the quantum subgroup SO (2) of . The line bundles are associated to the quantum principal bundle via representations of SO (2) and are described dually by finitely-generated projective modules of rank 1 and of degree computed to be an even integer . The corresponding idempotents, that represent classes in the K-theory of the base space, are explicitly worked out and are paired with two suitable Fredhom modules that compute the rank and the degree of the bundles. For q real, we show how to diagonalise the action (on the base space algebra) of the Casimir operator of the Hopf algebra which is dual to .

Abstract:These lecture notes survey some joint work with Samson Abramsky as it was presented by me at several conferences in the summer of 2005. It concerns `doing quantum mechanics using only pictures of lines, squares, triangles and diamonds'. This picture calculus can be seen as a very substantial extension of Dirac's notation, and has a purely algebraic counterpart in terms of so-called Strongly Compact Closed Categories (introduced by Abramsky and I in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="quant-ph/0402130" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/quant-ph/0402130">quant-ph/0402130</a> and [4]) which subsumes my Logic of Entanglement <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="quant-ph/0402014" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/quant-ph/0402014">quant-ph/0402014</a>. Abstract:This paper provides a short introduction to the mathematical foundation of quantum computation for researchers in computer science by providing an introduction fo the mathematical basis of calculations. This paper concerns the mathematical foundations of quantum computation addressing first the representation of qubit using the Bloch sphere and second the special relations between SU(2) and SO(3). The properties of SU(2) are introduced focusing especially about the double-covering of SO(3) and explaining how to map rotations of SO(3) into matrices of SU(2). Quantum physic operators are based on SU(2) since we have a direct relationship to SO(3) namely one isomorphism. We start first from basic representations of qubit in R^3 and representations of operators in SU(2) and we next discuss with operators that permit to move from one SU(2) to another one according to a specific operator of SU(2) that is related to rotation into R^3.

Abstract:Quantum simulation has become a promising avenue of research that allows one to simulate and gain insight into the models of High Energy Physics whose experimental realizations are either complicated or inaccessible with current technology. We demonstrate the quantum simulation of such a model, a quantum mechanical system with spatial noncommutativity, which is inspired by the works in Noncommutative Geometry and Noncommutative Field theory for a universal quantum computer. We use the novel group theoretical formalism to map the Hamiltonian of such a noncommutative quantum system into the ordinary quantum mechanical Hamiltonian and then carry out the quantum simulation using the Trotter-Suzuki product formula. Furthermore, we distinguish the impact of the noncommutativity parameter on the quantum simulation, especially on the Trotter error, and point out how its sizable value affects the simulation.
