Abstract:We discuss how the canonical commutation relations must be modified in order to make appropriate numerical models of quantum systems. The C*-algebras associated with the discretized CCRs are the non-commutative spheres of Bratteli, Elliott, Evans and Kishimoto.

Abstract:The canonical anticommutation relations (CAR) for fermion systems can be represented by finite-dimensional matrix algebra, but it is impossible for canonical commutation relations (CCR) for bosons. After description of more simple case with representation of CAR and (bounded) quantum computational networks via Clifford algebras in the paper are discussed CCR. For representation of the algebra it is not enough to use quantum networks with fixed number of qubits and it is more convenient to consider Turing machine with essential operation of appending new cells for description of infinite tape in finite terms --- it has straightforward generalization for quantum case, but for CCR it is necessary to work with symmetrized version of the quantum Turing machine. The system is called here quantum abacus due to understanding analogy with the ancient counting devices (abacus).

Abstract:The set of states on ${\rm CCR}(\ch)$, the CCR algebra of a separable Hilbert space $\ch$, is here looked at as a natural object to obtain a non-commutative version of Freedman's theorem for unitarily invariant stochastic processes. In this regard, we provide a complete description of the compact convex set of states of ${\rm CCR}(\ch)$ that are invariant under the action of all automorphisms induced in second quantization by unitaries of $\ch$. We prove that this set is a Bauer simplex, whose extreme states are either the canonical trace of the CCR algebra or Gaussian states with variance at least $1$.

Abstract:This article reviews some recent progress in our understanding of the structure of rational conformal field theories, based on ideas that originate for a large part in the work of A. Ocneanu. The consistency conditions that generalize modular invariance for a given RCFT in the presence of various types of boundary conditions—open, twisted—are encoded in a system of integer multiplicities that form matrix representations of fusion-like algebras. These multiplicities are also the combinatorial data that enable one to construct an abstract “quantum” algebra, whose 6j-and 3j-symbols contain essential information on the operator product algebra of the RCFT and are part of a cell system, subject to pentagonal identities. It looks quite plausible that the classification of a wide class of RCFT amounts to a classification of “Weak C*- Hopf algebras”.

Abstract:Quantum gravity in 4D asymptotically flat spacetimes features spontaneous symmetry breaking due to soft radiation hair, intimately tied to the proliferation of IR divergences. A holographic description via a putative 2D CFT is expected free of such redundancies. In this series of two papers, we address this issue by initiating the study of Quantum Error Correction in Celestial CFT (CCFT). In Part I we construct a toy model with finite degrees of freedom by revisiting noncommutative geometry in Kleinian hyperkähler spacetimes. The model obeys a Wick algebra that renormalizes in the radial direction and admits an isometric embedding à la Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill. The code subspace is composed of 2-qubit stabilizer states which are robust under soft spacetime fluctuations. Symmetries of the hyperkähler space become discrete and translate into the Clifford group familiar from quantum computation. The construction is then embedded into the incidence relation of twistor space, paving the way for the CCFT regime addressed in upcoming work.

Commutation Relations in Mesoscopic Electric Circuits

Abstract:In the talk, I briefly demonstrate the quantum theory for mesoscopic electric circuits and its applications. In the theory, the importance of the charge discreteness in a mesoscopic electric circuit is addressed. As a result, a new kind of commutation relation for electric charge and current occurred inevitably. The charge representation, canonical current representation and pseudo-current representation are discussed extensively. It not only provides a concrete realization of mathematical models which discuss the space quantization in high energy physics and quantum gravity but also presents a sequence of applications in condensed matter physics from a different point of view. A possible generalization to coupled circuits is also proposed.

Abstract:We introduce a novel commutative C*-algebra $C_\mathcal{R}(X)$ of functions on a symplectic vector space $(X,\sigma)$ admitting a complex structure, along with a strict deformation quantization that maps a dense subalgebra of $C_\mathcal{R}(X)$ to the resolvent algebra introduced by Buchholz and Grundling [JFA, 2008]. The associated quantization map is a field-theoretical Weyl quantization compatible with the work of Binz, Honegger and Rieckers [AHPO, 2004]. We also define a Berezin-type quantization map on all of $C_\mathcal{R}(X)$, which continuously and injectively maps it onto a dense subset of the resolvent algebra. The commutative resolvent algebra $C_\mathcal{R}(X)$, generally defined on a real inner product space $X$, intimately depends on the finite dimensional subspaces of $X$. We thoroughly analyze the structure of this algebra in the finite dimensional case by giving a characterization of its elements and by computing its Gelfand spectrum.

Abstract:We review some aspects of the Racah algebra $R(n)$, including the closure relations, pointing out their role in superintegrability, as well as in the description of the symmetry algebra for several models with coalgebra symmetry. The connection includes the generic model on the $(n-1)$ sphere. We discuss an algebraic scheme of constructing Hamiltonians, integrals of the motion and symmetry algebras. This scheme reduces to the Racah algebra $R(n)$ and the model on the $(n-1)$ sphere only for the case of specific differential operator realizations. We review the method, which allows us to obtain the commutant defined in the enveloping algebra of $\mathfrak{sl}(n)$ in the classical setting. The related $\mathcal{A}_3$ polynomial algebra is presented for the case $\mathfrak{sl}(3)$. An explicit construction of the quantization of the scheme for $\mathcal{A}_3$ by symmetrization of the polynomial and the replacement of the Berezin bracket by commutator and symmetrization of the polynomial relations is presented. We obtain the additional quantum terms. These explicit relations are of interest not only for superintegrability, but also for other applications in mathematical physics.

Abstract:Using Araki-Yamagami's characterization of quasi-equivalence for quasi-free representations of the CCRs, we provide an abstract criterion for the existence of isomorphisms of second quantization local von Neumann algebras induced by Bogolubov transformations in terms of the respective one particle modular operators. We discuss possible applications to the problem of local normality of vacua of Klein-Gordon fields with different masses.

Abstract:We first show that the convex effect algebras (CEA) approach to quantum mechanics is more general than the general probabilistic theories approach. We then restrict our attention to finite-dimension CEA's. After an introductory Section~1, we present basic definitions in Section~2. Section~3 studies convex subeffect algebras and observables. In Section~4 we consider strong CEA's and strong observables. We show that a CEA is strong if and only if it is classical. Informationally complete observables on classical CEA's are studied in Section~5. Section~6 considers quantum CEA's in Hilbert spaces.

Noncommutative Cantor-Bendixson derivatives and scattered $C^*$-algebras

Abstract:We analyze the sequence obtained by consecutive applications of the Cantor-Bendixson derivative for a noncommutative scattered $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal A$, using the ideal $\mathcal I^{At}(\mathcal A)$ generated by the minimal projections of $\mathcal A$. With its help, we present some fundamental results concerning scattered $C^*$-algebras, in a manner parallel to the commutative case of scattered compact or locally compact Hausdorff spaces and superatomic Boolean algebras. It also allows us to formulate problems which have motivated the "cardinal sequences" programme in the classical topology, in the noncommutative context. This leads to some new constructions of noncommutative scattered $C^*$-algebras and new open problems. In particular, we construct a type $I$ $C^*$-algebra which is the inductive limit of stable ideals $\mathcal A_\alpha$, along an uncountable limit ordinal $\lambda$, such that $\mathcal A_{\alpha+1}/\mathcal A_\alpha$ is $*$-isomorphic to the algebra of all compact operators on a separable Hilbert space and $\mathcal A_{\alpha+1}$ is $\sigma$-unital and stable for each $\alpha<\lambda$, but $\mathcal A$ is not stable and where all ideals of $\mathcal A$ are of the form $\mathcal A_\alpha$. In particular, $\mathcal A$ is a nonseparable $C^*$-algebra with no ideal which is maximal among the stable ideals. This answers a question of M. R\ordam in the nonseparable case. All the above $C^*$-algebras $A_\alpha$s and $A$ satisfy the following version of the definition of an AF algebra: any finite subset can be approximated from a finite-dimensional subalgebra. Two more complex constructions based on the language developed in this paper are presented in separate papers.

DHR bimodules of quasi-local algebras and symmetric quantum cellular automata

Abstract:For a net of C*-algebras on a discrete metric space, we introduce a bimodule version of the DHR tensor category and show it is an invariant of quasi-local algebras under isomorphisms with bounded spread. For abstract spin systems on a lattice $L\subseteq \mathbb{R}^{n}$ satisfying a weak version of Haag duality, we construct a braiding on these categories. Applying the general theory to quasi-local algebras $A$ of operators on a lattice invariant under a (categorical) symmetry, we obtain a homomorphism from the group of symmetric quantum cellular automata (QCA) to $\textbf{Aut}_{br}(\textbf{DHR}(A))$, containing symmetric finite depth circuits in the kernel. For a spin chain with fusion categorical symmetry $\mathcal{D}$, we show the DHR category of the quasi-local algebra of symmetric operators is equivalent to the Drinfeld center $\mathcal{Z}(\mathcal{D})$ . We use this to show that for the double spin flip action $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}\times \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}\curvearrowright \mathbb{C}^{2}\otimes \mathbb{C}^{2}$, the group of symmetric QCA modulo symmetric finite depth circuits in 1D contains a copy of $S_{3}$, hence is non-abelian, in contrast to the case with no symmetry.

Abstract:Quantum symmetry of graph $C^{*}$-algebras has been studied, under the consideration of different formulations, in the past few years. It is already known that the compact quantum group $(\underbrace{C(S^{1})*C(S^{1})*\cdots *C(S^{1})}_{|E(\Gamma)|-times}, \Delta) $ always acts on a graph $C^*$-algebra for a finite, connected, directed graph $\Gamma$ in the category introduced by Joardar and Mandal, where $|E(\Gamma)|:=$ number of edges in $\Gamma$. In this article, we show that for a certain class of graphs including Toeplitz algebra, quantum odd sphere, matrix algebra etc. the quantum symmetry of their associated graph $C^*$-algebras remains $(\underbrace{C(S^{1})*C(S^{1})*\cdots *C(S^{1})}_{|E(\Gamma)|-times}, \Delta) $ in the category as mentioned before. More precisely, if a finite, connected, directed graph $\Gamma$ satisfies the following graph theoretic properties : (i) there does not exist any cycle of length $\geq$ 2 (ii) there exists a path of length $(|V(\Gamma)|-1)$ which consists all the vertices, where $|V(\Gamma)|:=$ number of vertices in $\Gamma$ (iii) given any two vertices (may not be distinct) there exists at most one edge joining them, then the universal object coincides with $(\underbrace{C(S^{1})*C(S^{1})*\cdots *C(S^{1})}_{|E(\Gamma)|-times}, \Delta) $. Furthermore, we have pointed out a few counter examples whenever the above assumptions are violated.

Discrete symmetries and quantum number conservation

Abstract:The algebraic formulation of discrete $P$ and $T$ space-time symmetries in terms of the Dirac algebra is shown to be flawed. This is corrected by relating these symmetries to fermion quantum numbers defined by a $Cl_{3,3}$ sub-algebra of the $Cl_{7,7}$ Clifford Unification algebra. A new {\it Conservation Law} is formulated to the effect that fermion decays and interactions conserve all seven quantum numbers defined by $Cl_{7,7}$. This can be applied in the design of high energy experiments and the qualitative interpretation of their results.

From Symmetries to Commutant Algebras in Standard Hamiltonians

Abstract:In this work, we revisit several families of standard Hamiltonians that appear in the literature and discuss their symmetries and conserved quantities in the language of commutant algebras. In particular, we start with families of Hamiltonians defined by parts that are local, and study the algebra of operators that separately commute with each part. The families of models we discuss include the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model and its deformations, several types of spinless and spinful free-fermion models, and the Hubbard model. This language enables a decomposition of the Hilbert space into dynamically disconnected sectors that reduce to the conventional quantum number sectors for regular symmetries. In addition, we find examples of non-standard conserved quantities even in some simple cases, which demonstrates the need to enlarge the usual definitions of symmetries and conserved quantities. In the case of free-fermion models, this decomposition is related to the decompositions of Hilbert space via irreducible representations of certain Lie groups proposed in earlier works, while the algebra perspective applies more broadly, in particular also to arbitrary interacting models. Further, the von Neumann Double Commutant Theorem (DCT) enables a systematic construction of local operators with a given symmetry or commutant algebra, potentially eliminating the need for "brute-force" numerical searches carried out in the literature, and we show examples of such applications of the DCT. This paper paves the way for both systematic construction of families of models with exact scars and characterization of such families in terms of non-standard symmetries, pursued in a parallel paper.

Abstract:Discretizing spacetime is often a natural step towards modelling physical systems. For quantum systems, if we also demand a strict bound on the speed of information propagation, we get quantum cellular automata (QCAs). These originally arose as an alternative paradigm for quantum computation, though more recently they have found application in understanding topological phases of matter and have} been proposed as models of periodically driven (Floquet) quantum systems, where QCA methods were used to classify their phases. QCAs have also been used as a natural discretization of quantum field theory, and some interesting examples of QCAs have been introduced that become interacting quantum field theories in the continuum limit. This review discusses all of these applications, as well as some other interesting results on the structure of quantum cellular automata, including the tensor-network unitary approach, the index theory and higher dimensional classifications of QCAs.

Quantum Cellular Automata on Symmetric Subalgebras

Abstract:We investigate quantum cellular automata (QCA) on one-dimensional spin systems defined over a subalgebra of the full local operator algebra - the symmetric subalgebra under a finite Abelian group symmetry $G$. For systems where each site carries a regular representation of $G$, we establish a complete classification of such subalgebra QCAs based on two topological invariants: (1) a surjective homomorphism from the group of subalgebra QCAs to the group of anyon permutation symmetries in a $(2+1)d$ $G$ gauge theory; and (2) a generalization of the Gross-Nesme-Vogts-Werner (GNVW) index that characterizes the flow of the symmetric subalgebra. Specifically, two subalgebra QCAs correspond to the same anyon permutation and share the same index if and only if they differ by a finite-depth unitary circuit composed of $G$-symmetric local gates. We also identify a set of operations that generate all subalgebra QCAs through finite compositions. As an example, we examine the Kramers-Wannier duality on a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetric subalgebra, demonstrating that it maps to the $e$-$m$ permutation in the two-dimensional toric code and has an irrational index of $\sqrt{2}$. Therefore, it cannot be extended to a QCA over the full local operator algebra and mixes nontrivially with lattice translations.
