Abstract:We show that the unitary operator on a separable Hilbert space is a parametrization of any conditional probability measure in a standard measure space. We propose unitary inference, a generalization of Bayesian inference. We study implications for classical statistical mechanics.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to apply the collection of mathematical tools known as the "method of arbitrary functions" to analyze how probability arises from quantum dynamics. We argue that in a toy model of quantum measurement the Born rule probabilities can be derived from the unitary Schrödinger dynamics when certain dynamical parameters are treated as themselves random variables with initial probability distributions. Specifically, we study the perturbed double well model, in which the perturbation is treated as a random variable, and we show that for arbitrary initial distributions within a certain class, the dynamics yields the Born rule probabilities in the joint limits given by long times and small values of Planck's constant (the classical limit). Our results establish the Born rule as a type of universal limiting behavior that is independent of the precise initial dynamical parameters.

Abstract:The choice of mathematical representation when describing physical systems is of great consequence, and this choice is usually determined by the properties of the problem at hand. Here we examine the little-known wave operator representation of quantum dynamics, and explore its connection to standard methods of quantum dynamics. This method takes as its central object the square root of the density matrix, and consequently enjoys several unusual advantages over standard representations. By combining this with purification techniques imported from quantum information, we are able to obtain a number of results. Not only is this formalism able to provide a natural bridge between phase and Hilbert space representations of both quantum and classical dynamics, we also find the waveoperator representation leads to novel semiclassical approximations of both real and imaginary time dynamics, as well as a transparent correspondence to the classical limit. This is demonstrated via the example of quadratic and quartic Hamiltonians, while the potential extensions of the waveoperator and its application to quantum-classical hybrids is discussed. We argue that the wave operator provides a new perspective that links previously unrelated representations, and is a natural candidate model for scenarios (such as hybrids) in which positivity cannot be otherwise guaranteed.

Probabilistic Unitary Formulation of Open Quantum System Dynamics

Abstract:We show explicitly that for any continuously evolving open quantum system, be it finite ($d$-dimensional) or countably infinite dimensional, its dynamics can be described by a time-dependent Hamiltonian and probabilistic combinations of up to $d-1$ ($d \to \infty$ for infinite dimensional case), instead of $d^2-1$, time-dependent unitary operators, resulting in a quadratic improvement in simulation resources. Importantly, both types of operations must be initial state-dependent in general, and thus the simulation is tailored to that initial state. Such description is exact under all cases, and does not rely on any assumptions other than the continuity and differentiability of the density matrix. It turns out that upon generalizations, the formalism can also be used to describe general quantum channels, which may not be complete positive or even positive, and results in a Kraus-like representation. Experimentally, the formalism provides a scheme to control a quantum state to evolve along designed quantum trajectories, and can be particularly useful in quantum computing and quantum simulation scenes since only unitary resources are needed for implementation. Philosophically, it provides us with a new perspective to understand the dynamics of open quantum systems and related problems such as decoherence and quantum measurement, i.e. the non-unitary evolution of quantum states can thereby be regarded as the combined effect of state-dependent deterministic evolutions and probabilistic applications of unitary operators

Abstract:Physics is based on probabilities as fundamental entities of a mathematical description. Expectation values of observables are computed according to the classical statistical rule. The overall probability distribution for one world covers all times. The quantum formalism arises once one focuses on the transport of the time-local probabilistic information from one hypersurface to a neighboring one. Wave functions or the density matrix allow the formulation of a general linear evolution law for classical statistics. The density matrix for classical statistics is a powerful tool which allows us to implement for generalized Ising models concepts as basis transformations, the momentum observable and the associated Fourier representation, or the definition of subsystems by subtraces of the density matrix. The association of operators to observables permits the computation of expectation values in terms of the density matrix by the usual quantum rule. We show that probabilistic cellular automata are quantum systems in a formulation with discrete time steps and real wave functions. The evolution operator for automata can be expressed in terms of fermionic creation and annihilation operators. The time-local probabilistic information amounts to a subsystem of the overall probabilistic system which is correlated with its environment consisting of the past and future. Such subsystems typically involve probabilistic observables for which only a probability distribution for their possible measurement values is available. Incomplete statistics does not permit to compute classical correlation functions for arbitrary subsystem-observables since different overall observables are mapped to the same subsystem observable. Bell's inequalities are not generally applicable.

Experimental characterization of quantum processes: a selective and efficient method in arbitrary finite dimension

Abstract:The temporal evolution of a quantum system can be characterized by quantum process tomography, a complex task that consumes a number of physical resources scaling exponentially with the number of subsystems. An alternative approach to the full reconstruction of a quantum channel allows selecting which coefficient from its matrix description to measure, and how accurately, reducing the amount of resources to be polynomial. The possibility of implementing this method is closely related to the possibility of building a complete set of mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) whose existence is known only when the dimension of the Hilbert space is the power of a prime number. However, an extension of the method that uses tensor products of maximal sets of MUBs, has been introduced recently. Here we explicitly describe how to implement this algorithm to selectively and efficiently estimate any parameter characterizing a quantum process in a non-prime power dimension, and we conducted for the first time an experimental verification of the method in a Hilbert space of dimension $d=6$. That is the small space for which there is no known a complete set of MUBs but it can be decomposed as a tensor product of two other Hilbert spaces of dimensions $D_1=2$ and $D_2=3$, for which a complete set of MUBs is known. The $6$-dimensional states were codified in the discretized transverse momentum of the photon wavefront. The state preparation and detection stages are dynamically programmed with the use of only-phase spatial light modulators, in a versatile experimental setup that allows to implement the algorithm in any finite dimension.

Abstract:Bayes' rule plays a crucial piece of logical inference in information and physical sciences alike. Its extension into the quantum regime has been the object of several recent works. These quantum versions of Bayes' rule have been expressed in the language of Hilbert spaces. In this paper, we derive the expression of the Petz recovery map within any quasiprobability representation, with explicit formulas for the two canonical choices of normal quasiprobability representations (which include Discrete Wigner representations) and of representations based on symmetric, informationally complete positive operator-valued measures (SIC-POVMs). By using the same mathematical syntax of (quasi-)stochastic matrices acting on (quasi-)stochastic vectors, the core difference in logical inference between classical and quantum theory is found in the manipulation of the reference prior rather than in the representation of the channel.

Abstract:In the differential approach elaborated, we study the evolution of the parameters of Gaussian, mixed, continuous variable density matrices, whose dynamics are given by Hermitian Hamiltonians expressed as quadratic forms of the position and momentum operators or quadrature components. Specifically, we obtain in generic form the differential equations for the covariance matrix, the mean values, and the density matrix parameters of a multipartite Gaussian state, unitarily evolving according to a Hamiltonian H ^ . We also present the corresponding differential equations, which describe the nonunitary evolution of the subsystems. The resulting nonlinear equations are used to solve the dynamics of the system instead of the Schrödinger equation. The formalism elaborated allows us to define new specific invariant and quasi-invariant states, as well as states with invariant covariance matrices, i.e., states were only the mean values evolve according to the classical Hamilton equations. By using density matrices in the position and in the tomographic-probability representations, we study examples of these properties. As examples, we present novel invariant states for the two-mode frequency converter and quasi-invariant states for the bipartite parametric amplifier.

Abstract:It is shown that `bipartite' wave functions can present a mathematical formalism of quantum theory for a single particle, in which the associated Schrödinger's wave functions correspond to those `bipartite' wave functions of product forms. This extension of Schrödinger's form establishes a mathematical expression of wave-particle duality and that von Neumann's entropy is a quantitative measure of complementarity between wave-like and particle-like behaviors. In particular, this formalism suggests that collapses of Schrödinger's wave functions can be regarded as the simultaneous transition of the particle from many levels to one. Our results shed considerable light on the basis of quantum mechanics, including quantum measurement.

Abstract:Wigner’s theorem says that symmetry transformations in quantum mechanics must be unitary or antiunitary [1]. The identity is unitary and symmetry, hence any symmetry that can become the identity by continuously changing a parameter has a unitary representation. On the contrary antiunitary maps are not connected to the identity, so it is not suitable to describe quantum physics. Therefore nature chooses unitary dynamics as its reasonable description. Nevertheless antiunitary transformations still have many interesting properties. The wellknown Kramer’s degeneracy comes from the time-reverse symmetry of quantum systems which contain an odd number of fermions [2]. Such time-reversal transformation is antiunitary. Usually an antiunitary operator can be decomposed into an antilinear transformation multiplied by a unitary operator. Many strange properties come from the antilinear part of such an operator. Recent progress in quantum information reveals that antilinear operator may play an important role during the study of quantum entanglement. In fact the famous Positive Partial Transpose (PPT) criterion [3], where antilinear map acts on the second particle of a bipartite density operator, provides a useful condition for testing quantum separability. Also antilinear map can be used as a useful technique to construct superoperators [4]. In the case of 2-dimensional Hilbert space, antilinear map is directly related to the universal-flip of a quantum state [5]. For high dimensional case, universal-flip operator doesn’t exist. However, the map |φ〉 =∑i αi|i〉 → |φ∗〉 = ∑ i α ∗ i |i〉 with respect to a specific basis {|i〉} still has many interesting properties. Here the state vector |φ∗〉 is often called as the phase-conjugate state of |φ〉.

Abstract:s-parametrized quantization is essential to phase space theory of quantum mechanical. Based on s-ordered Wigner operator, we examine the classical correspondence of the s(2)-parametrized Wigner operator through the s(1)-parametrized quantization scheme, and establish the mutual transformation relation between different s-parametrized quantization schemes. It turns out that the s-parametrized Wigner operator's s-ordering is just the Dirac delta function, which seems to be a new result. As applications, we derive the s-ordered form of the density operator of thermal states and some new generating function formula of Herrnite polynomials.

Abstract:We develop and defend the thesis that the Hilbert space formalism of quantum mechanics is a new theory of probability. The theory, like its classical counterpart, consists of an algebra of events, and the probability measures defined on it. The construction proceeds in the following steps: (a) Axioms for the algebra of events are introduced following Birkhoff and von Neumann. All axioms, except the one that expresses the uncertainty principle, are shared with the classical event space. The only models for the set of axioms are lattices of subspaces of inner product spaces over a field K. (b) Another axiom due to Soler forces K to be the field of real, or complex numbers, or the quaternions. We suggest a probabilistic reading of Soler's axiom. (c) Gleason's theorem fully characterizes the probability measures on the algebra of events, so that Born's rule is derived. (d) Gleason's theorem is equivalent to the existence of a certain finite set of rays, with a particular orthogonality graph (Wondergraph). Consequently, all aspects of quantum probability can be derived from rational probability assignments to finite "quantum gambles". We apply the approach to the analysis of entanglement, Bell inequalities, and the quantum theory of macroscopic objects. We also discuss the relation of the present approach to quantum logic, realism and truth, and the measurement problem.

Particle approximations of Wigner distributions for n arbitrary observables

Abstract:A class of signed joint probability measures for n arbitrary quantum observables is derived and studied based on quasi-characteristic functions with symmetrized operator orderings of Margenau-Hill type. It is shown that the Wigner distribution associated with these observables can be rigorously approximated by such measures. These measures are given by affine combinations of Dirac delta distributions supported over the finite spectral range of the quantum observables and give the correct probability marginals when coarse-grained along any principal axis. We specialize to bivariate quasi-probability distributions for the spin measurements of spin-1/2 particles and derive their closed-form expressions. As a side result, we point out a connection between the convergence of these particle approximations and the Mehler-Heine theorem. Finally, we interpret the supports of these quasi-probability distributions in terms of repeated thought experiments.

A probabilistic view of wave-particle duality for single photons

Abstract:One of the most puzzling consequences of interpreting quantum mechanics in terms of concepts borrowed from classical physics, is the so-called wave-particle duality. Usually, wave-particle duality is illustrated in terms of complementarity between path distinguishability and fringe visibility in interference experiments. In this work, we instead propose a new type of complementarity, that between the continuous nature of waves and the discrete character of particles. Using the probabilistic methods of quantum field theory, we show that the simultaneous measurement of the wave amplitude and the number of photons in the same beam of light is, under certain circumstances, prohibited by the laws of quantum mechanics. Our results suggest that the concept of ``interferometric duality'' could be eventually replaced by the more general one of ``continuous-discrete duality''.

Tachocline Confinement by an Oscillatory Magnetic Field

Abstract:Helioseismic measurements indicate that the solar tachocline is very thin, its full thickness not exceeding 4% of the solar radius. The mechanism that inhibits differential rotation to propagate from the convective zone to deeper into the radiative zone is not known, though several propositions have been made. In this paper we demonstrate by numerical models and analytic estimates that the tachocline can be confined to its observed thickness by a poloidal magnetic field B_p of about one kilogauss, penetrating below the convective zone and oscillating with a period of 22 years, if the tachocline region is turbulent with a diffusivity of eta 10^10 cm^2/s (for a turbulent magnetic Prandtl number of unity). We also show that a similar confinement may be produced for other pairs of the parameter values (B_p, eta). The assumption of the dynamo field penetrating into the tachocline is consistent whenever eta>10^9 cm^2/s.

Abstract:To begin with, it is pointed out that the form of the quantum probabil- ity formula originates in the very initial state of the object system as seen when the state is expanded with the eigen-projectors of the measured ob- servable. Making use of the probability reproducibility condition, which is a key concept in unitary measurement theory, one obtains the relevant coher- ent distribution of the complete-measurement results in the final unitary- measurement state in agreement with the mentioned probability formula. Treating the transition from the final unitary, or premeasurement, state, where all possible results are present, to one complete-measurement result sketchily in the usual way, the well-known probability formula is derived. In conclusion it is pointed out that the entire argument is only formal unless one makes it physical assuming that the quantum probability law is valid in the extreme case of probability-one (certain) events (projectors).

Abstract:We use a novel form of quantum conditional probability to define new measures of quantum information in a dynamical context. We explore relationships between our new quantities and standard measures of quantum information, such as von Neumann entropy. These quantities allow us to find new proofs of some standard results in quantum information theory, such as the concavity of von Neumann entropy and Holevo's theorem. The existence of an underlying probability distribution helps shed light on the conceptual underpinnings of these results.

Abstract:We present a description of the measurement process based on the parametric representation with environmental coherent states. This representation is specifically tailored for studying quantum systems whose environment needs being considered through the quantum-to-classical cross-over. Focusing upon projective measures, and exploiting the connection between large-$N$ quantum theories and the classical limit of related ones, we manage to push our description beyond the pre-measurement step. This allows us to show that the outcome production follows from a global-symmetry breaking, entailing the observed system's state reduction, and that the statistical nature of the process is brought about, together with the Born's rule, by the macroscopic character of the measuring apparatus.
