Abstract:Niobium powder was made from potassium heptafluoroniobite () as the raw material using sodium (Na) as a reducing agent based on the hunter process. The apparatus for the experiment was designed and built specifically for the present study. The niobium particle size greatly increased as the reduction temperature increased from to . The particle size was fairly uniform, varying from to depending on the reduction temperatures. The niobium powder morphology and particle size are very sensitive to a reaction temperature in the metallothermic reduction process. The yield of niobium powder increased from 55% to 80% with a increasing a reaction temperature.

Abstract:Niobium powder was fabricated by sodiothermic reduction process using K2NbF7 as a raw materials, KCl and KF as the diluents and sodium as a reducing agent. The apparatus for the experiment was designed and built specifically for the present study. Varying properties of niobium powder depending on reaction temperature and excess of reducing agent were analyzed. The niobium particle size increased significantly as reduction temperature increased from 993 to 1093K. The particle size was fairly uniform at given reaction temperature, varying from 0.2μm to 50nm depending on the reaction temperature. The yield of niobium powder increased from 58% to 83% with a increase in reaction temperature. The average particle size of niobium powder was improved from 70nm to 0.2μm with increase in the amount of sodium excess. In addition, the yield of niobium powder was 82% in the 5% sodium excess.

Abstract:In this study, niobium powder was made from potassium heptafluoroniobite() using sodium(Na) as a reductant and KCl, KF as a diluent based on the hunter metallothermic reduction method. The excesses of reductant were varied from 0%, 3%, 5% and 7%. When 7% excess of sodium was used, the un-reacted sodium remained in the reacted product. The niobium powder has been achieved by reducing 50 g of with 5% sodium excess in a charge at a reduction temperature of . The proportion of fine fraction decreased appreciably and the yield of niobium powder improved from 65% to 85% with the increase of sodium excess. The average particle size of niobium powder is improved from 0.2 microns to 0.3 microns in the 5% excess sodium.

Enhancement of apparent density of the sample has been observed with the increase in sintering temperature and has great influence on the transport properties of NiFe2O4. Decrease in resistivity with increasing temperature confirms the semiconducting behavior of the prepared ferrites. Also, it was found that the value of resistivity at room temperature decreased with the increase in sintering temperature. Variation of activation energy has been found for different sintering temperatures. Dielectric constant shows the normal behavior of the ferrite materials which can be explained on the basis of Koops' two-layer model and Maxwell-Wagner polarization theory. Also, the increased value of dielectric constant (κ) has been observed with the increase in sintering temperature.
Production of Niobium Powder by Preform Reduction Process Using Various Fluxes and Alloy Reductant

Abstract:In the previous study of the authors, a preform reduction process (PRP) based on the magnesiothermic reduction of a feed preform containing niobium oxide (Nb2O5) was established with the aim of minimizing contamination during the reduction process, and its effectiveness in producing fine niobium powder was demonstrated. In this study, various species of fluxes (e.g., CaCO3, CaCl2, Na2CO3, and NaCl) were tested to find the optimum conditions for producing a homogeneous powder. Feed preform in the form of plates was fabricated by mixing Nb2O5 powder, flux and binder. The sintered solid preform containing Nb2O5 with various flux compositions was placed in a stainless steel container, and reacted with magnesium vapor at a constant temperature ranging between 1 073 and 1 273 K. Niobium powder with a purity of 99 mass% was recovered from the reduced preform by acid leaching. When CaCO3 or CaCl2 flux with cationic molar ratio XCat./Nb=1/5 to 1/2 was used, a homogenous fine powder, around 1 μm in diameter, was obtained. Furthermore, an alloy reductant was used to decrease the activity of magnesium reductant with the aim of preventing nickel contamination. The use of an alloy reductant is found to be effective in eliminating the deposition of excess reductant on the preform and on other reaction components. It was found that the particle size of niobium powder can be reduced by using an Mg-Ag alloy instead of pure magnesium.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline NbN powder was synthesized by the direct nitridation of amorphous Nb 2 O 5 powder with high BET surface area. X‐ray diffractometry analysis indicated that the cubic‐phase NbN powder could be obtained by nitridation at 650°–800°C for 3–8 h. Transmission electron microscopy images showed that the particle sizes were in the range of 15–40 nm. The effect of the nitridation temperature and holding time on the powder properties was discussed.

Abstract:The paper provides brief information about the state of production and use of niobium in steelmaking and about niobium deposits in Russia. Pyrochlore-apatite ores contain a significant amount of phosphorus; therefore, the schemes of their enrichment include a dephosphorization stage, which reduces the niobium extraction into the product, increasing its cost. The possibility of improving the through production scheme, including the enrichment of ores and the smelting of niobium ferroalloy, is shown. The smelting process and the physicochemical characteristics of the used concentrates of the CaO– SiO 2 –MgO–Al 2 O 3 –TiO 2 –Nb 2 O 5 –Fe 2 O 3 –P 2 O 5 system have not been sufficiently studied; therefore, thermodynamic simulation of carbothermal and metal-thermal processes of reducing the oxide system components was performed in order to determine the influence of chemical composition of the system, the amount of reducing agent and temperature on the reduction degree of elements, the composition of the metal and oxide phases, and the metal dephosphorization. Thermodynamic simulation was carried out for temperatures of 1400–1700 °C at a reducing agent consumption of 80, 100 and 120% of the stoichiometrically required amount for the reduction of the system leading elements. With the carbothermal method, the phosphorus reduction occurs quite completely at more than 100% of carbon of the stoichiometrically required amount already at 1100°C and above. With the silicothermal method, the influence of temperature and silicon amount on the reduction degree of Nb, P, Ti and the chemical and phase compositions of the alloy is shown.

Abstract:Niobium(Nb) and Tantalum(Ta) are rarely found apart in nature and never in the free state. The element niobium amounts to 3% of the crustal abundance. On the whole, the niobium capacitor showed somewhat more unstable characteristics than the commercial tantalum capacitors, but is nonetheless considered applicable as a future substitute for tantalum capacitors. In this study, niobium powder was made from potassium heptafluoroniobite() by using sodium(Na) as a reductant and KCl and KF as diluents based on the hunter sodiothermic reduction method.,In order to obtain a high surface area niobium powder via the sodiothermic reduction method, a certain amount of diluent, such as alkali metal halides selected from NaCl, KCl, KF and NaF, was added in the raw materials to be reduced. However, if a higher surface area of powder is required, more diluents need to be used in the said method in order to produce niobium powder. But when more diluents are used, the niobium powder will be contaminated with more impurities and the yield will also decreased.

Abstract:Nb-Ti binary alloys are widely employed as high value-added materials in the manufacture of super heat-resistant alloys, biomaterials, and superconductors. Therefore, there is significant interest to produce Nb-Ti master alloys in a cost-effective manner. In this study, we investigated the magnesiothermic reduction of Nb2O5 and Ti2Nb10O29 over the temperature range of 1073 to 1223 K and comparatively evaluated the reaction outcomes. The reduction product was composed of metal (Nb or Nb-Ti) particles and MgO, which covered the surface of the reduced metal particles. After the reduction reaction, the surface MgO phase was removed by pickling with hydrochloric acid (HCl) to finally recover the Nb metal or Nb-Ti alloy as a pure product. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analyses of the pure Nb metal and Nb-Ti alloy powders revealed that the reduction of both raw materials was successful at temperatures exceeding 1173 K. Reaction kinetics analysis revealed that the activation energy for the reduction of the mixed metal oxide (Ti2Nb10O29) is lower than that of Nb2O5 reduction. This is because of the different reaction mechanism behaviors during reduction and the different thermodynamic stabilities of the precursors.

Abstract:In this study, the niobium enrichment research of the iron concentrate containing niobium was studied by coal-based direct reduction roasting followed by magnetic separation process. The distribution of niobium element and existence form of mineral bearing-Nb in roasted products were investigated under different roasting temperature which was ranging from 1100°C to 1300°C. X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) was used to identify the various minerals and compositions of the roasted products. The microstructures of these products were analyzed by the scanning electron microscope (SEM), while the elemental analysis was carried out by using energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) technique. The results of XRD and EDS analysis showed that most of the niobium minerals were Nb-Fe rutile and ulvospinel which scattered in slag, and only a little was adhered to the surface of metallic iron at 1100°C. And the niobium oxides were partly reduced to Ti-aeschynite and niobocarbide which attached on the surface of metallic iron, and most were still ulvospinel scattering in the slag at 1200°C. The Ti-aeschynite was gradually reduced to Nb adhering to the metallic iron particle forming Nb-Fe soild solution at 1300°C.

Abstract:In the present investigation, the non-recrystallization temperature (TNR) of niobium-microalloyed steel is determined to plan rolling schedules for obtaining the desired properties of steel. The value of TNR is based on both alloying elements and deformation parameters. In the literature, TNR equations have been developed and utilized. However, each equation has certain limitations which constrain its applicability. This study was completed using laboratory-grade low-carbon Nb-microalloyed steels designed to meet the API X-70 specification. Nb- microalloyed steel is processed by the melting and casting process, and the composition is found by optical emission spectroscopy (OES). Multiple-hit deformation tests were carried out on a Gleeble® 3500 system in the standard pocket-jaw configuration to determine TNR. Cuboidal specimens (10 (L) × 20 (W) × 20 (T) mm3) were taken for compression test (multiple-hit deformation tests) in gleeble. Microstructure evolutions were carried out by using OM (optical microscopy) and SEM (scanning electron microscopy). The value of TNR determined for 0.1 wt.% niobium bearing microalloyed steel is ~ 951 °C. Nb- microalloyed steel rolled at TNR produce partially recrystallized grain with ferrite nucleation. Hence, to verify the TNR value, a rolling process is applied with the finishing rolling temperature near TNR (~951 °C). The microstructure is also revealed in the pancake shape, which confirms TNR.
