Abstract:The effect of Nb content on the mechanical behavior of Ti-(20, 25, 30) at.% Nb alloys has been investigated. Results show that the storage modulus, the tensile strength and elongation at room temperature decrease with increasing Nb content. The Ti-20Nb and Ti-25Nb alloys show double-yielding behavior and they exhibit higher work hardening rate than the Ti-30Nb alloy. The Ti-20Nb alloy deforms by stress-induced beta -> alpha '' transformation and the reorientation of the alpha '' phase. While the Ti-25Nb alloy deforms by stress-induced martensitic transformation and deformation bands that are devoid of omega phase. The Ti-30Nb alloy, which has the highest beta phase stability, deforms in a localized mode mainly by dislocation slip. The "marble-like" deformation microstructure previously reported in "gum metal" was observed in severely deformed Ti-25Nb and Ti-30Nb alloys.

Abstract:The microstructure and fracture behavior of as-cast Ti-1100 alloys with different contents of Nb were systematically investigated. The results demonstrate that the Nb element added to titanium alloys changes the lattice parameters of alpha phase. Microstructural observations indicate an obvious reduction in the prior beta grain size, alpha-laths spacing, as well as the thickness of beta phase, with the increase of Nb content. It is also observed that Nb addition promotes the formation of ternary (TiZr)(6)Si-3 (S-2 type) silicides. The fracture toughness K-IC of the alloy increases with increasing content of Nb element, which is primarily attributed to the improved propensity for crack-tip tortuousity caused by the fracture behaviors of the alpha/beta colonies. The fracture morphologies of these alloys reveal cleavage fracture mode. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Ti42Al2.6C–xNb (x = 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 at%, similarly hereinafter) alloys are synthesized by melting to investigate the effects of Nb on microstructure and mechanical properties, especially the formation of B2 phase and high temperature tensile properties. The results show that lamellar colony size decreases from 33.3 to 13.2 µm and lamellar space decreases from 193.4 to 139.6 nm with increasing Nb from 0 to 8%. Lattice parameters of γ and α2 phase change and B2 phase forms among lamellar colonies with the addition of Nb. The volume fraction of B2 phases and content of Nb in Ti2AlC phases increase with increasing Nb. B2 phases form between lamellar colonies because of Nb segregation. As high‐melting‐point element, Nb increases heterogenous nucleation particles and impedes grain growing. Compressive strength increases from 1568 to 1912 MPa with increasing Nb from 0 to 6% and then decreases at 8% Nb. Tensile strength at 750 °C can reach 465 MPa and the strain is only 2.4% when the Nb content is 6%. The increased strength is resulted from refined microstructure and solid solution of Nb. And the decreased strength is because many B2 phases acts as crack source.

Abstract:A ternary alloying element Niobium addition to the Ni-Ti shape memory alloy could optimize transformation temperatures, mechanical properties. In this paper, with the help of ambient tensile test and scan electron microscope observation, the influences of Nb-content on the mechanical properties of (Ni47Ti44)(100-x)Nb-x alloys were investigated in detail. The results indicated that both the fracture strength (sigma(b)) and the elongation (delta) decreased gradually with the increasing of the Nb content. The fracture surfaces showed the fracture character of the alloys was clearly gliding fracture, which is typically transgranular fracture mode.

Abstract:The structural evolution, mechanical properties and the oxidation characteristics of Ti50Ni50−xAlx alloys were investigated. The influence of additive Nb on the microstructure, mechanical properties as well as the high temperature oxidation resistance was examined. It is found that the substitution of Al for Ni can remarkably reinforce the TiNi-based intermetallics by precipitation of (Ti,Al)2Ni phase and by solid-solution strengthening effects. It is also found that the addition of Nb has beneficial influence on the mechanical properties of TiNiAl intermetallics, and that the oxidation resistance of TiNiAl(Nb) alloys can be effectively improved by the Nb addition. The effect of Nb on the high temperature oxidation behavior of TiNiAl(Nb) alloys has been discussed.

Abstract:In this study, Fe-25Mn-9Al-8Ni-1C-xNb alloys (x = 0, 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%, and 0.4%) were prepared by vacuum arc melting, and the effects of Nb content on the stacking fault energy, microstructure, hardness and room temperature tensile properties of the alloys were systematically studied. It is deduced from the literature on the estimation of stacking fault energy that the stacking fault energy of the Fe-25Mn-9Al-8Ni-1 C-xNb alloys increases the increase of Nb content. Within this range of stacking fault energies, twinning-induced plastic deformation is dominant. Microstructure analysis shows that main phases of the series alloys are austenite, ferrite, k-carbide, NiAl intermetallic compound and NbC phase. As the Nb content increases, the NbC quantity gradually increases. With increasing Nb content, the hardness and elongation of the material gradually increase, while the tensile strength first increases and then decreases. When the Nb content is 0.3%, the alloy has enhanced comprehensive properties, and the average tensile strength is about 853 MPa, and its average elongation is about 30%, which about 8 times higher than that of Fe-25Mn-9Al-8Ni-1C alloy.

Effects of Nb content on the microstructure and magnetic properties of Fe-6.5wt.%Si alloy

Abstract:The effects of adding different contents of Nb on microstructure and magnetic properties of Fe-6.5wt.%Si alloy were investigated. The results show that the addition of a suitable amount of Nb to Fe-6.5wt.%Si alloys has improved the ductility of the alloy by precipitating Nb-Fe-Si intermetallics. The precipitated Nb-Fe-Si particles have refined the grains and lowering the Si content in the matrix, the latter effect has resulted in the reduction of the ordered phases or the degree of long range order in the alloy. However, when the Nb content is 2.0wt.%, the numbers of precipitates are too high and starting to pin the movement of dislocations, which has an adverse effect on the processability of the alloy. Though the Fe-6.5Si-1.5Nb (wt.%) alloy showed better magnetic properties than the Fe-6.5Si-2.0Nb (wt.%) alloy, the addition of Nb would deteriorate the magnetic properties of Fe-6.5wt.%Si alloy. Thus, the addition of Nb should be less than 1.5 wt.% to balance the processability and magnetic properties of Fe-6.5wt.%Si alloy.

Abstract:The effect of niobium on microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti46Al2.6CxNb (at. %) alloys with Nb content ranging from 0 to 8 at.% have been studied. The alloys have been prepared by vacuum arc melting. The content of gamma(TiAl) phase increases and content of alpha(2)(Ti3Al) phase decreases with increasing content of Nb. The lattice parameters of gamma phase increase and parameters of the alpha(2) phase remain stable when Nb content is higher than 4 at. %. There is no significant segregation of Nb in the studied Ti46Al2.6CxNb alloys. The size of lamellar colonies decreases with increasing content of Nb from 0 to 8 at. %. The increase of the lattice parameters and low segregation of Nb without formation of B2 phase are related to a higher solid solubility of Nb in the gamma phase. Compressive strength and compressive strain increase with increasing content of Nb. Tensile strength of Ti46Al2.6C8Nb alloy increases from 330 MPa to 442 MPa and the strain increases from 2.9% to 5.3% with increasing test temperature from 750 degrees C to 950 degrees C. Solid solution strengthening by Nb, precipitation strengthening by Ti2AlC particles, increasing content of gamma phase, and grain boundary strengthening are beneficial to improvement in mechanical properties of the studied alloys.

Abstract:The influence of Nb content variation on the microstructural and thermal characteristics of NiTiNb alloys was evaluated since these aspects are relevant to the control and adequacy of its shape memory properties for application purposes. The aim of this study was to observe how the Nb content acts in the formation of Nb-rich precipitates and the eutectic structures, which can make this alloys more complex. Microstructural characterization of the alloys was performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and microanalysis by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), besides the thermal characterization by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and the comparison between the Nb alloys and the NiTi binary alloy. The results demonstrated a proportional dependence between the amount of β-Nb phase in the microstructures and the amount of Nb dissolved in the NiTi matrix with the Nb content. Although it was found that the increase in the Nb content causes the decrease of the martensitic (Mi) and reverse (Ai) transformation temperatures, the magnitude of thermal hysteresis was not significantly changed.

Abstract:In this paper, two groups of Nb/Ti low carbon microalloyed steels (Nb-bearing and Nb-free) were obtained through laboratorial methods. The evolution and effect of Nb/Ti-containing complex inclusions were characterised and analysed after being subjected to high heat input thermal simulation of 100 kJ/cm. The results showed that the prior austenite grain size in the coarse grain heat-affected zone (CGHAZ) was not affected by 0.045 wt% Nb addition. However, the acicular ferrite nucleation, induced by effective micron-level inclusions, was inhibited. Nb tended to converge towards the interfaces between the micron-level inclusions and matrix, which had a negative effect on the nucleation potential of acicular ferrite. The re-precipitation behaviour of nano-level inclusions satisfied the dynamic conditions during the high heat input thermal cycle, under which the dislocation movement was inhibited due to the pinning effect of re-precipitation particles. Besides, the size, morphology and composition of nano-level precipitates were changed by Nb (0.045 wt%) addition. In general, the evolution and effect of inclusions in simulated high heat input CGHAZ provide theoretical references for the study of welding performance in Nb/Ti low carbon microalloyed steels.

Abstract:High Nb-containing TiAl alloys have been deemed ideal candidates for demanding structural applications under high temperatures due to their appealing mechanical qualities and low density. Nonetheless, its inherent brittleness at room temperature remains a significant impediment to its processability. Herein, different concentrations of boron were added into the Ti45Al8Nb2Cr (Ti4582) alloy by vacuum arc melting to tailor the microstructure and corresponding mechanical properties. The coarse lamellar colonies were significantly refined via boron addition, while excessive boron addition did harm to the mechanical properties. The different morphologies of the borides (Bf or B27) profoundly influenced the microstructure and mechanical properties of as-prepared alloys. Further elemental distribution, phase constitution, lamellar colony size, and mechanical properties were systematically investigated. Noteworthily, trace boron additions effectively improved the mechanical properties of Ti4582-xB alloys with an optimal adjustment in Ti4582-0.2B, showing 673MPa for room temperature ultimate tensile strength (UTS) with elongation of 1.3% and 1623MPa for ultimate compressive strength (UCS) with compressive strain of 32.5%. The improved mechanical properties of Ti4582-xB were mainly attributed to grain refining and second phase strengthening. Moreover, the hindrance and accommodation for dislocations by deformed twins and reinforcements effectively enhanced the mechanical properties.

Abstract:The microstructure characteristics and yielding behavior of two Fe–4Mn–2Al-0.2C steels with different Nb contents, i.e. 0.02 wt% and 0.1 wt%, were investigated in the present study. The results show that the increase of Nb content will bring about 50–100 MPa more fine-grain strengthening effect. But on the other hand, Nb promotes the precipitation of cementite and delays recrystallization, so that the stability of austenite decreases and presents a single lathy morphology. The partial martensitic transformation of austenite in the cooling process promotes the diffusion of carbon from martensite to retained austenite, and causes the segregation of carbon at the austenite phase boundaries, leading to the Lüders effect. The steel with 0.02 wt% Nb undergoes a more persistent TRIP effect during the deformation process due to two austenite morphologies with higher volume fractions and exhibits excellent comprehensive mechanical properties with the yield strength of 570 MPa, ultimate tensile strength of 1011 MPa, total elongation of 35.6% and product of strength and elongation of 36 GPa·% after intercritical annealing at 725 °C for 30 min without the appearance of Lüders effect. Thus, this paper is of great importance to the effect of Nb contents on microstructure and yielding behavior of medium Mn steels.

Abstract:Owing to the distinctive and designable properties of high-entropy alloys (HEAs), many researchers have been engrossed in studying them. The CrFeNiNb x ( x is the molar ratio; x = 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8) alloys were prepared using vacuum arc melting furnace equipment to study the impact of Nb content on microstructure, processing performance, and corrosion resistance. Laves primary phase and eutectic structure phase were obtained. And the area of the Laves primary structure, which was rich in Nb, was amplified when the alloy's percentage of Nb was supplemented. The Nb4 alloy ( x = 0.4) exhibited a range of satisfactory mechanical properties, including a hardness of 422.3 HV, a compressive stress of 2355 MPa, and a compressive strain of 26.33%. Cracks formed around the Laves phase during electrochemical corrosion experimentation, and the alloy passivation film's breakdown potential was approximately 1.0 V.

Abstract:In present work, microstructure, martensitic transformation behavior and mechanical properties of (Ti50Ni40Cu10)(100-x)Nb-x(x = 0, 5, 10, 15 at.%) alloys were investigated as a function of Nb content. The addition of Nb to TiNiCu alloy leads to the presence of beta-Nb phase. During cooling and heating, the alloys show one-step B2 <-> B19 transformation. As the Nb content increases, the transformation temperatures almost linearly decrease and the transformation hysteresis monotonously increases due to the decrease of middle eigenvalue of the phase transformation matrix. The addition of Nb is effective in improving the elongation because of the introduction of beta-Nb phase. With the increase of Nb content, both the yield strength and the critical stress to induce martensitic transformation increase, resulting in the improved superelastic strain. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:To refine microstructure, adjust the ratio of gamma/alpha(2) and improve the mechanical properties, Ti46Al 2.6 C-xNb (at. %) alloys were prepared by arc melting under the action of ultrasound. The phase composition, lamellar colony size, elements distribution, the kinds and distribution of carbides and compressive properties were investigated. Results show that as the Nb content increases, the relative content of alpha(2) phase and Ti2AlC phase increases, and the relative content of gamma phase decreases. TiC phase completely reacts to form Ti2AlC phase and its shape changes from coarse long rod to short rod. The microstructure was refined with the addition of Nb under ultrasound treatment. Lamellar colony size decreases from 36.9 to 21.5 mu m, lamellar spacing decreases from 1.6 to 0.8 pm, and the length-diameter ratio of Ti2AlC decreases from 5.4 to 4.0 when the Nb content increases from 0 to 8.0 at. %. During solidification process, not only the component supercooling and heterogeneous nucleation of Nb are increased, but also the crystal grains are broken and the nucleation barrier is reduced under the action of ultrasound to promote the nucleation. The microstructure is refined and the uniformity of the element distribution is improved. Compressive results show that the strength increases from 2074.1 to 2474.2 MPa and the strain increases from 23.4% to 28.0% when the Nb content increases from 0 to 4 at. %. The refinement of lamellar colony and Ti2AlC, the ratio of gamma/alpha(2 )and solid-solution of Nb are the main reasons for improving compressive properties. (C) 2022 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:To develop novel β-type biomedical titanium alloys, a series of Ti–15Mo–xNb alloys(x=0, 5, 10 and 15, mass fraction in %) were designed and prepared by using vacuum arc melting method. The present study focused on the effect of Nb addition on the microstructure, mechanical properties and castability of Ti–15Mo alloy. Phase analysis and microstructure observation show that all the alloys consist of single β phase and the equiaxed β grain is refined with increasing Nb content. These β-type Ti–15Mo–xNb alloys exhibit good plasticity and rather low compression elastic modulus (in the range of 18.388–19.365 GPa). After Nb addition, the compression yield strength of the alloys increases. With increasing Nb content, the micro-hardness of the alloys decreases. The alloys exhibit obvious fibrous strip microstructure after cold compression deformation. The castability test shows that the castability of the alloys after Nb addition decreases and that of the Ti–15Mo alloy is the highest (92.01%).
Effects of Al Contents on Microstructure of Nb-Ti-C Alloys

Abstract:Nb-21Ti-4C (beta Nb-Ti) alloys with different Al contents were fabricated by a vacuum non-consumable arc-melting method. The effects of Al content on the microstructure and lattice parameters of the alloys were studied. The results indicate that the as-cast alloys contain dendritic-growth niobium solid solution Nb-ss, carbide (Nb, Ti)C, Nb3Al and interdendritic eutectic of Nb-ss/MC. The nucleation and growth of Nb3Al are in dendritic Nb, and other Al elements dissolve into Nb-ss and MC. The Nb-ss dendritic size increases first and then decreases with Al content increasing. After heat treatment at 1100 degrees C for 24 h, Nb-ss of interdendritic eutectic grows further as a discontinuous precipitation process, and needle-like or plate-like MC and Nb3Al precipitate from Nb-ss, resulting in lattice parameters becoming larger; the lattice parameters of MC changes with Al content change and Nb precipitation.

Abstract:A novel Fe-28Mn-10Al-C-0.5Nb low-density steel containing 0.5wt% Nb for automobile was developed, aiming to study the effect of Nb addition on the structure and mechanical properties of austenitic Fe-Mn-Al-C low-density steel. With the addition of Nb, the average austenite grain size in Fe-28Mn-10Al-C low-density steel is refined from 39.49 um to 13.67 um, and the formation of twins is also suppressed. Besides, the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of Fe-28Mn-10Al-C low-density steel increase by 171 and 64 MPa, respectively, and the elongation after fracture increases by 11.5%, revealing an excellent balance of strength and ductility. This is due to the precipitation strengthening of NbC precipitates and fine grain strengthening of austenite. Precipitation strengthening plays an important role to increase the yield strength of Nb-added low-density steel.

Abstract:Four kinds of multiphase refractory Nb-16Si-22Ti-2Cr-2Al-2Hf-xFe (x=0, 1, 2, 3) alloys were prepared by vacuum arc melting. XRD analysis reveals that the composites consist of Nb solid solution (Nbss), intermetallics Nb3Si and Nb5Si3 phase. The addition of Fe promotes the eutectic reaction L -> Nbss+Nb5Si3, which changes the phases of alloy phases from Nbss+Nb3Si to Nbss+Nb5Si3. The volume fraction of ductile phase Nbss increases with increasing of Fe addition, leading to the reduction of compressive strength. Meanwhile, temperature and strain rate also have important influence on compressive strength of the alloys. The addition of Fe element makes Nb-Si based superalloy have better high temperature plastic deformation ability, which is of great significance to improve the hot workability of Nb-Si alloy.

Abstract:This study investigated the microstructure, phase transformation and mechanical property of (Ni49.8Mn28.5Ga21.7)(100-x)Nb-x (x = 1, 3, 6, 9) alloys. The Nb1 alloy exhibited a single austenite phase at room temperature. With increasing Nb content for Nb3, Nb6 and Nb9, the alloy changed to a dual phase consisting of austenitic matrix and Nb-rich second phase with a hexagonal structure, and the amount of the second phase increased with the increase of Nb content. The martensitic transformation temperature and Curie temperature were changed and the transformation enthalpy was gradually reduced with increasing Nb content. The change of martensitic transformation temperature and Curie temperature was related to the introduction of Nb in the Ni-Mn-Ga structure that decreased valence electron concentration (e/a), increased unit cell volume and reduced magnetic exchange of the alloys. The decrease of transformation enthalpy was mainly attributed to the formation and increase of the Nb-rich second phase that reduced volume fraction of the matrix taking part in phase transformation. All the alloys presented a similar compression behavior with progressively fracturing characters (occurrence of several stress drops before complete fracturing). The fracture strength was slightly enhanced with increasing Nb content from Nb0 to Nb9, but the ductility has no apparent improvement. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
