Abstract:We construct the first examples of infinite sharply 2-transitive groups which are finitely generated. Moreover, we construct such a group that has Kazhdan property (T), is simple, has exactly four conjugacy classes and we show that this number is as small as possible.

Abstract:The finite sharply $2$-transitive groups were classified by Zassenhaus in the 1930's. They essentially all look like the group of affine linear transformations $x\mapsto ax+b$ for some field (or at least near-field) $K$. However, the question remained open whether the same is true for infinite sharply $2$-transitive groups. There has been extensive work on the structures associated to such groups indicating that Zassenhaus' results might extend might extend to the infinite setting. For many specific classes of groups, like Lie groups, linear groups, or groups definable in o-minimal it was indeed proved that all examples inside the given class arise in this way as affine groups. However, it recently turned out that the reason for the lack of a general proof was the fact that there are plenty of sharply $2$-transitive groups which do not arise from fields or near-fields! In fact, it is not too hard to construct concrete examples (see below). In this note, we survey general sharply $n$-transitive groups and describe how to construct examples not arising from fields.

Abstract:We construct the first examples of finitely presented simple groups of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of the real line. Our examples are also of type $F_{\infty}$, have infinite geometric dimension, and admit a nontrivial homogeneous quasimorphism (and hence have infinite commutator width).

Abstract:We show that every finitely generated residually finite torsion group $G$ embeds in a finitely generated torsion group $\Gamma$ that is residually finite simple. In particular we show the existence of finitely generated infinite torsion groups that are residually finite simple, which answers a question of Olshanskii and Osin.

Abstract:We prove finiteness properties for groups of homeomorphisms that have finitely many "singular points", and we describe the normal structure of such groups. As an application, we prove that every countable abelian group can be embedded into a finitely presented simple group, verifying the Boone-Higman conjecture for countable abelian groups. Indeed, we describe a specific 2-generated, $\mathrm{F}_\infty$ simple group $V\mathcal{A}$ of homeomorphisms of the Cantor set that contains every countable abelian group. As a second application, we prove that if $G$ is a bounded automata group then the associated Röver-Nekrashevych groups $V_{d,r}G$ have type $\mathrm{F}_\infty$, verifying a conjecture of Nekrashevych for a large class of contracting self-similar groups. Among others, this result applies to Röver-Nekrashevych groups associated to Gupta-Sidki groups and the basilica group.

Abstract:In this paper, three infinite families of locally 2-arc transitive graphs are constructed, which are vertex-intransitive, regular and all vertex stabilizers are conjugate. To the best of our knowledge these are the first infinite families of graphs with these properties. In particular, they are semi-symmetric. It is then shown that the only locally 2-arc transitive graphs admitting a Ree simple group are (i) the graphs in these three families, (ii) (vertex-transitive) 2-arc transitive graphs admitting a Ree simple group, previously classified by the first and third authors, and (iii) standard double covers of the graphs in (ii). This is the first complete classification of locally 2-arc transitive graphs for an infinite family of simple groups.

Abstract:Every finite simple group can be generated by two elements and, in fact, every nontrivial element is contained in a generating pair. Groups with this property are said to be $\frac{3}{2}$-generated, and the finite $\frac{3}{2}$-generated groups were recently classified. Turning to infinite groups, in this paper, we prove that the finitely presented simple group $T$ of Thompson is $\frac{3}{2}$-generated. Moreover, we exhibit an element $\zeta \in T$ such that for any nontrivial $\alpha \in T$, there exists $\gamma \in T$ such that $\langle \alpha, \zeta^\gamma \rangle = T$.

Abstract:We provide the first examples of finitely generated simple groups that are amenable (and infinite). This follows from a general existence result on invariant states for piecewise-translations of the integers. The states are obtained by constructing a suitable family of densities on the classical Bernoulli space.

Abstract:A fundamental notion in group theory, which originates in an article of Ulam and von Neumann from $1947$ is uniform simplicity. A group $G$ is said to be $n$-uniformly simple for $n \in \mathbf{N}$ if for every $f,g\in G\setminus \{id\}$, there is a product of no more than $n$ conjugates of $g$ and $g^{-1}$ that equals $f$. Then $G$ is uniformly simple if it is $n$-uniformly simple for some $n \in \mathbf{N}$, and we refer to the smallest such $n$ as the Ulam width, denoted as $\mathcal{R}(G)$. If $G$ is simple but not uniformly simple, one declares $\mathcal{R}(G)=\infty$. In this article, we construct for each $n\in \mathbf{N}$, a finitely presented infinite simple group $G$ such that $n<\mathcal{R}(G)<\infty$. To our knowledge, these are the first such examples among the class of finitely presented infinite simple groups. Moreover, our examples are also of type $F_{\infty}$, which means that they are fundamental groups of aspherical CW complexes with finitely many cells in each dimension. Uniformly simple groups are in particular uniformly perfect: there is an $n\in \mathbf{N}$ such that every element of the group can be expressed as a product of at most $n$ commutators of elements in the group. We also show that the analogous notion of width for uniform perfection is also unbounded for our family of finitely presented infinite simple groups. Finally, since these notions of width are invariants of elementary equivalence, our construction also provides a natural infinite family of pairwise non-elementarily equivalent finitely presented infinite simple groups.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal G$ denote the space of finitely generated marked groups. For any finitely generated group $G$, we construct a continuous, injective map $f$ from the space of subgroups $Sub(G)$ to $\mathcal G$ that sends conjugate subgroups to isomorphic marked groups; in addition, if $G$ is finitely presented and $H\le G$ is finitely generated, then $f(H)$ is finitely presented. This result allows us to transfer various topological phenomena occurring in $Sub(G)$ to $\mathcal G$. In particular, we provide the first example of a finitely presented group whose isomorphism class in $\mathcal G$ has no isolated points.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field and let $X$ be an irreducible subvariety of $G^r$ with $r \geqslant 2$. In this paper, we consider the general problem of determining if there exists a tuple $(x_1, \ldots, x_r) \in X$ such that $\langle x_1, \ldots, x_r \rangle$ is Zariski dense in $G$. We are primarily interested in the case where $X = C_1 \times \cdots \times C_r$ and each $C_i$ is a conjugacy class of $G$ comprising elements of prime order modulo the center of $G$. In this setting, our main theorem gives a complete solution to the problem when $G$ is a symplectic or orthogonal group. By combining our results with earlier work on linear and exceptional groups, this gives a complete solution for all simple algebraic groups. We also present several applications. For example, we use our main theorem to show that many faithful representations of symplectic and orthogonal groups are generically free. We also establish new asymptotic results on the probabilistic generation of finite simple groups by pairs of prime order elements, completing a line of research initiated by Liebeck and Shalev over 25 years ago.

Abstract:We prove two results on some special generators of finite simple groups and use them to prove that every non-abelian finite simple group $S$ admits a non-congruence presentation (as conjectured in [CLT24]), and that if $S$ has a non-trivial Schur multiplier, then it admits a smooth cover (as conjectured in [CFLZ]).

Abstract:A countable, bounded degree graph is almost finite if it has a tiling with isomorphic copies of finitely many Følner sets, and we call it strongly almost finite, if the tiling can be randomized so that the probability that a vertex is on the boundary of a tile is uniformly small. We give various equivalents for strong almost finiteness. In particular, we prove that Property A together with the Følner property is equivalent to strong almost finiteness. Using these characterizations, we show that graphs of subexponential growth and Schreier graphs of amenable groups are always strongly almost finite, generalizing the celebrated result of Downarowicz, Huczek and Zhang about amenable Cayley graphs, based on graph theoretic rather than group theoretic principles. We give various equivalents to Property A for graphs, and show that if a sequence of graphs of Property A (in a uniform sense) converges to a graph $G$ in the neighborhood distance (a purely combinatorial analogue of the classical Benjamini-Schramm distance), then their Laplacian spectra converge to the Laplacian spectrum of $G$ in the Hausdorff distance. We apply the previous theory to construct a new and rich class of classifiable $C^{\star}$-algebras. Namely, we show that for any minimal strong almost finite graph $G$ there are naturally associated simple, nuclear, stably finite $C^{\star}$-algebras that are classifiable by their Elliott invariants.

Abstract:<p>We prove that, given a finite graph Σ satisfying some mild conditions, there exist infinitely many tetravalent half-arc-transitive normal covers of Σ. Applying this result, we establish the existence of infinite families of finite tetravalent half-arc-transitive graphs with certain vertex stabilizers, and classify the vertex stabilizers up to order 2<sup>8</sup> of finite connected tetravalent half-arc-transitive graphs. This sheds some new light on the longstanding problem of classifying the vertex stabilizers of finite tetravalent half-arc-transitive graphs.</p>

Abstract:In this paper, we give a characterisation for a class of edge-transitive Cayley graphs and provide a method for constructing edge-transitive graphs of valency 4 with arbitrarily large vertex stabiliser. In particular, in the last section, we obtain certain extensions of the results of Li et al. (Tetravalent edge-transitive Cayley graphs with odd number of vertices, J Comb Theory Ser B 96:164–181, 2006) on half-transitive graphs.

Abstract:Finite groups $G$ such that $G/Z(G) \simeq C_2 \times C_2$ where $C_2$ denotes a cyclic group of order 2 and $Z(G)$ is the center of $G$ were studied in \cite{casofinito} and were used to classify finite loops with alternative loop algebras. In this paper we extend this result to finitely generated groups such that $G/Z(G) \simeq C_p \times C_p$ where $C_p$ denotes a cyclic group of prime order $p$ and provide an explicit description of all such groups.
