Abstract:We provide the first examples of finitely generated simple groups that are amenable (and infinite). This follows from a general existence result on invariant states for piecewise-translations of the integers. The states are obtained by constructing a suitable family of densities on the classical Bernoulli space.
Group Theory
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to find examples of finitely - generated infinite abelian groups. Specifically, the author aims to prove the existence of finitely - generated simple abelian groups (i.e., groups without non - trivial normal subgroups), and these groups are also infinite. Before this, such groups had not been discovered. ### Background and Motivation In group theory, an abelian group is a special type of group in which the operation between elements satisfies the commutative law. A simple group refers to a group that has no other normal subgroups except itself and the identity element. A finitely - generated group is a group that can be generated by a finite number of generators. For a long time, mathematicians have been looking for finitely - generated simple abelian groups, but they have been unable to find such examples. ### Main Contributions of the Paper 1. **Main Theorems**: - **Theorem A**: The topological full group of any minimal Cantor system is abelian. - **Corollary B**: There exist finitely - generated infinite abelian groups, and the number of these groups is \(2^{\aleph_0}\). 2. **Technical Means**: - The author solves the problem by studying the piecewise translation group \(W(\mathbb{Z})\) on the integers. They construct a special class of density functions and prove the invariance of these functions under piecewise translation. - Through these density functions, the author constructs an invariant mean, thereby proving that certain subgroups of \(W(\mathbb{Z})\) are abelian. ### Key Steps 1. **Construction of Density Functions**: - A family of \(L^2\) functions \(f_n\) is defined, and these functions are defined on the classical Bernoulli space \(\{0,1\}^\mathbb{Z}\). - The inner product properties of these functions under piecewise translation are proved, that is, \(\langle g(f_n), f_n \rangle / \|f_n\|^2 \to 1\) and \(\|f_n|_{x_0 = 0}\| / \|f_n\| \to 1\). 2. **Existence of Invariant Mean**: - Through the above - mentioned density functions, the author proves that there exists an invariant mean on the set of the action of \(W(\mathbb{Z})\) on the finite subsets of integers, and this mean gives full weight to the sets containing 0. 3. **Application to Cantor Systems**: - Using the above results, the author proves that the topological full group of any minimal Cantor system is abelian, thereby obtaining examples of finitely - generated infinite abelian groups. ### Conclusion This paper successfully solves the problem of finding finitely - generated infinite abelian groups and provides a new method for constructing such groups. This result not only enriches the research in group theory but also provides new tools and perspectives for further research in related fields.
