Abstract:We construct sharply 2-transitive groups of characteristic 0 without non-trivial abelian normal subgroup. These groups act sharply 2-trnaisitvely by conjugation on their involutions. This answers a longstanding open question.

Abstract:The finite sharply $2$-transitive groups were classified by Zassenhaus in the 1930's. They essentially all look like the group of affine linear transformations $x\mapsto ax+b$ for some field (or at least near-field) $K$. However, the question remained open whether the same is true for infinite sharply $2$-transitive groups. There has been extensive work on the structures associated to such groups indicating that Zassenhaus' results might extend might extend to the infinite setting. For many specific classes of groups, like Lie groups, linear groups, or groups definable in o-minimal it was indeed proved that all examples inside the given class arise in this way as affine groups. However, it recently turned out that the reason for the lack of a general proof was the fact that there are plenty of sharply $2$-transitive groups which do not arise from fields or near-fields! In fact, it is not too hard to construct concrete examples (see below). In this note, we survey general sharply $n$-transitive groups and describe how to construct examples not arising from fields.

Abstract:We construct the first examples of infinite sharply 2-transitive groups which are finitely generated. Moreover, we construct such a group that has Kazhdan property (T), is simple, has exactly four conjugacy classes and we show that this number is as small as possible.

Abstract:It is known that the notion of a transitive subgroup of a permutation group G extends naturally to subsets of G . We consider subsets of the general linear group acting transitively on flag-like structures, which are common generalisations of t -dimensional subspaces of and bases of t -dimensional subspaces of . We give structural characterisations of transitive subsets of using the character theory of and interpret such subsets as designs in the conjugacy class association scheme of . In particular we generalise a theorem of Perin on subgroups of acting transitively on t -dimensional subspaces. We survey transitive subgroups of , showing that there is no subgroup of with $1<t<n$ acting transitively on t -dimensional subspaces unless it contains or is one of two exceptional groups. On the other hand, for all fixed t , we show that there exist nontrivial subsets of that are transitive on linearly independent t -tuples of , which also shows the existence of nontrivial subsets of that are transitive on more general flag-like structures. We establish connections with orthogonal polynomials, namely the Al-Salam–Carlitz polynomials, and generalise a result by Rudvalis and Shinoda on the distribution of the number of fixed points of the elements in . Many of our results can be interpreted as q -analogs of corresponding results for the symmetric group.</t<n\)<>

Abstract:We investigate under which circumstances there exists nonzero {\it{projective}} smooth $\field[G]$-modules, where $\field$ is a field of characteristic $p$ and $G$ is a locally pro-$p$ group. We prove the non-existence of (non-trivial) projective objects for so-called {\it{fair}} groups -- a family including $\bf{G}(\frak{F})$ for a connected reductive group $\bf{G}$ defined over a non-archimedean local field $\frak{F}$. This was proved in \cite{SS24} for finite extensions $\frak{F}/\Bbb{Q}_p$. The argument we present in this note has the benefit of being completely elementary and, perhaps more importantly, adaptable to $\frak{F}=\Bbb{F}_q(\!(t)\!)$. Finally, we elucidate the fairness condition via a criterion in the Chabauty space of $G$.

Sharpness of proper and cocompact actions on reductive homogeneous spaces

Abstract:We prove that if $G$ is a noncompact connected real reductive linear Lie group, then any discrete subgroup of $G$ acting properly discontinuously and cocompactly on some homogeneous space $G/H$ of $G$ is quasi-isometrically embedded and sharp for $G/H$, i.e. satisfies a strong, quantitative form of proper discontinuity. For noncompact reductive $H$, this was known as the Sharpness Conjecture, with applications to spectral analysis on pseudo-Riemannian locally symmetric spaces developed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1209.4075" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1209.4075">arXiv:1209.4075</a>. For $G/H$ rational of real corank one, we use sharpness to fully characterize properly discontinuous and cocompact actions on $G/H$ in terms of Anosov representations. This enables us to show that in real corank one, acting properly discontinuously and cocompactly on $G/H$ is an open property, and also to prove that a number of homogeneous spaces do not admit compact quotients, such as $\mathrm{SL}(n+1,\mathbb{K})/\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{K})$ for $n>1$ and $\mathbb{K}=\mathbb{R}$, $\mathbb{C}$, or the quaternions.

Abstract:We determine precisely which irreducible hypergeometric sheaves have an extraspecial normalizer in characteristic 2 as their geometric monodromy groups. This resolves the last open case of the determination of local monodromy at 0 of irreducible hypergeometric sheaves with finite geometric monodromy group.

Abstract:It is a long-standing conjecture from the 1970s that every translation generalized quadrangle is linear, that is, has an endomorphism ring which is a division ring (or, in geometric terms, that has a projective representation). We show that any translation generalized quadrangle $\Gamma$ is ideally embedded in a translation quadrangle which is linear. This allows us to weakly represent any such $\Gamma$ in projective space, and moreover, to have a well-defined notion of "characteristic" for these objects. We then show that each translation quadrangle in positive characteristic indeed is linear.

Abstract:We initiate the study of torsion-free algebraically hyperbolic groups; these groups generalise torsion-free hyperbolic groups and are intricately related to groups with no Baumslag--Solitar subgroups. Indeed, for groups of cohomological dimension $2$ we prove that algebraic hyperbolicity is equivalent to containing no Baumslag--Solitar subgroups. This links algebraically hyperbolic groups to two famous questions of Gromov; recent work has shown these questions to have negative answers in general, but they remain open for groups of cohomological dimension $2$. We also prove that algebraically hyperbolic groups are CSA, and so have canonical abelian JSJ-decompositions. In the two-generated case we give a precise description of the form of these decompositions.

Abstract:A conjecture of Roseberger asserts that every generalised triangle group either is virtually soluble or contains a non-abelian free subgroup. Modulo two exceptional cases, we verify this conjecture for generalised triangle groups of type (2,3,2) which do not admit essential representations onto the cyclic group of order 6.

Abstract:In the seminal work of Culler and Shalen from 1983, essential surfaces in 3-manifolds are associated to ideal points of their $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$-character varieties, and connections between the algebraic geometry of the character variety and the topology of the 3-manifold are established via group actions on trees. Here, we lay a general foundation for this theory in arbitrary characteristic by using the same approach instead over an arbitrary algebraically closed field. Examples include a change in the $A$-polynomial in characteristic 2, a closed Haken hyperbolic 3-manifold with no detected essential surface, and a closed Haken hyperbolic 3-manifold with an essential surface only detected in characteristic 2.

Abstract:The 2-dimensional Shephard groups are quotients of 2-dimensional Artin groups by powers of standard generators. We show that such a quotient is not $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ if the powers taken are sufficiently large. However, for a given 2-dimensional Shephard group, we construct a $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ piecewise Euclidean cell complex with a cocompact action (analogous to the Deligne complex for an Artin group) that allows us to determine other non-positive curvature properties. Namely, we show the 2-dimensional Shephard groups are acylindrically hyperbolic (which was known for 2-dimensional Artin groups), and relatively hyperbolic (which most Artin groups are known not to be). As an application, we show that a broad class of 2-dimensional Artin groups are residually finite.

Abstract:Journal of Topology and Analysis, Ahead of Print. We give a new obstruction to translation-like actions on nilpotent groups. Suppose we are given two finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent groups with the same degree of polynomial growth, but non-isomorphic Carnot completions (asymptotic cones). We show that there exists no injective Lipschitz function from one group to the other. It follows that neither group can act translation-like on the other. As Lipschitz injections need not be bi-Lipschitz embeddings, this is a strengthening of a classical result of Pansu in the context of groups of the same homogeneous dimension.

Abstract:We study automorphism and birational automorphism groups of varieties over fields of positive characteristic from the point of view of Jordan and $p$-Jordan property. In particular, we show that the Cremona group of rank $2$ over a field of characteristic $p>0$ is $p$-Jordan, and the birational automorphism group of an arbitrary geometrically irreducible algebraic surface is nilpotently $p$-Jordan of class at most $2$. Also, we show that the automorphism group of a smooth geometrically irreducible projective variety of non-negative Kodaira dimension is Jordan in the usual sense.

Abstract:If the characteristic of a field $k$ is odd any infinitesimal group scheme of $PGL_{2,k}$ lifts to $SL_{2,k}$. In this paper, we prove that this is not true in characteristic $2$ and we give a complete description, up to isomorphism, of infinitesimal unipotent subgroup schemes of $PGL_{2,k}$. Also, the infinitesimal trigonalizable case is considered.

Abstract:Let $\text{Homeo}_{+}(\mathbb{S}^1)$ denote the group of orientation preserving homeomorphisms of the circle $\mathbb{S}^1$. A subgroup $G$ of $\text{Homeo}_{+}(\mathbb{S}^1)$ is tightly transitive if it is topologically transitive and no subgroup $H$ of $G$ with $[G: H]=\infty$ has this property; is almost minimal if it has at most countably many nontransitive points. In the paper, we determine all the topological conjugation classes of tightly transitive and almost minimal subgroups of $\text{Homeo}_{+}(\mathbb{S}^1)$ which are isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}^n$ for any integer $n\geq 2$.

Subgroups of word hyperbolic groups in dimension 2 over arbitrary rings

Abstract:In 1996, Gersten proved that finitely presented subgroups of a word hyperbolic group of integral cohomological dimension 2 are hyperbolic. We use isoperimetric inequalities over arbitrary rings to extend this result to any ring. In particular, we study the discrete isoperimetric function and show that its linearity is equivalent to hyperbolicity, which is also equivalent to it being subquadratic. We further use these ideas to obtain conditions for subgroups of higher rank hyperbolic groups to be again higher rank hyperbolic of the same rank. The appendix discusses the equivalence between isoperimetric inequalities and coning inequalities in the simplicial setting and the general setting, leading to combinatorial definitions of higher rank hyperbolicity in the setting of simplicial complexes and allowing us to give elementary definitions of higher rank hyperbolic groups.
