Abstract:We determine precisely which irreducible hypergeometric sheaves have an extraspecial normalizer in characteristic 2 as their geometric monodromy groups. This resolves the last open case of the determination of local monodromy at 0 of irreducible hypergeometric sheaves with finite geometric monodromy group.

Abstract:We define the hypergeometric exponential sum associated to a finite family of representations of a reductive group over a finite field. We introduce the hypergeometric $\ell$-adic sheaf to describe the behavior of the hypergeometric exponential sum. It is a perverse sheaf, and it is the counterpart in characteristic $p$ of the $A$-hypergeometric $\mathcal D$-module introduced by Kapranov. Using the theory of the Fourier transform for vector bundles over a general base developed by Wang, we are able to study the hypergeometric $\ell$-adic sheaf via the hypergeometric $\mathcal D$-module. We apply our results to the estimation of the hypergeometric exponential sum.

Abstract:Generalised hypergeometric sheaves are rigid local systems on the punctured projective line with remarkable properties. Their study originated in the seminal work of Riemann on the Euler–Gauss hypergeometric function and has blossomed into an active field with connections to many areas of mathematics. In this paper, we construct the Hecke eigensheaves whose eigenvalues are the irreducible hypergeometric local systems, thus confirming a central conjecture of the geometric Langlands program for hypergeometrics. The key new concept is the notion of hypergeometric automorphic data. We prove that this automorphic data is generically rigid (in the sense of Zhiwei Yun) and identify the resulting Hecke eigenvalue with hypergeometric sheaves. The definition of hypergeometric automorphic data in the tame case involves the mirabolic subgroup, while in the wild case, semistable (but not necessarily stable) vectors coming from principal gradings intervene.

Local Euler characteristics of $A_n$-singularities and their application to hyperbolicity

Abstract:Wahl's local Euler characteristic measures the local contributions of a singularity to the usual Euler characteristic of a sheaf. Using tools from toric geometry, we study the local Euler characteristic of sheaves of symmetric differentials for isolated surface singularities of type $A_n$. We prove an explicit formula for the local Euler characteristic of the $m$th symmetric power of the cotangent bundle; this is a quasi-polynomial in $m$ of period $n+1$. We also express the components of the local Euler characteristic as a count of lattice points in a non-convex polyhedron, again showing it is a quasi-polynomial. We apply our computations to obtain new examples of algebraic quasi-hyperbolic surfaces in $\mathbb{P}^3$ of low degree. We show that an explicit family of surfaces with many singularities constructed by Labs has no genus $0$ curves for the members of degree at least $8$ and no curves of genus $0$ or $1$ for degree at least $10$.

The local converse theorem for odd special orthogonal and symplectic groups in positive characteristic

Abstract:Let $F$ be a non-archimedean local field of characteristic different from $2$ and $G$ be either an odd special orthogonal group ${\rm SO}_{2r+1}(F)$ or a symplectic group ${\rm Sp}_{2r}(F)$. In this paper, we establish the local converse theorem for $G$. Namely, for given two irreducible admissible generic representations of $G$ with the same central character, if they have the same local gamma factors twisted by irreducible supercuspidal representations of ${\rm GL}_n(F)$ for all $1 \leq n \leq r$ with the same additive character, these representations are isomorphic. Using the theory of Cogdell, Shahidi, and Tsai on partial Bessel functions and the classification of irreducible generic representations, we break the barrier on the rank of twists $1 \leq n \leq 2r-1$ in the work of Jiang and Soudry, and extend the result of Q. Zhang, which was achieved for all supercuspidal representations in characteristic $0$.

Abstract:We study the monodromy of certain $\ell$-adic local systems attached to the generalized Kloosterman sheaves constructed by Yun and calculate their Euler characteristics under standard representations in the cases of symplectic and split/quasi-split orthogonal groups. This provides evidence for the conjectural description of their Swan conductors at $\infty$ which is predicted by Reeder-Yu on the Langlands parameters attached to the epipelagic representations.

Perverse sheaves on varieties with large fundamental groups

Abstract:We conjecture that any perverse sheaf on a compact aspherical Kähler manifold has non-negative Euler characteristic. This extends the Singer-Hopf conjecture in the Kähler setting. We verify the stronger conjecture when the manifold X has non-positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. We also show that the conjecture holds when X is projective and in possession of a faithful semi-simple rigid local system. The first result is proved by expressing the Euler characteristic as an intersection number involving the characteristic cycle, and then using the curvature conditions to deduce non-negativity. For the second result, we have that the local system underlies a complex variation of Hodge structure. We then deduce the desired inequality from the curvature properties of the image of the period map.

Finite Groups of Symplectic Automorphisms of Supersingular K3 surfaces in Odd Characteristics

Abstract:In 2009, Dolgachev-Keum show that finite groups of tame symplectic automorphisms of K3 surfaces in positive characteristics are subgroups of the Mathieu group of degree 23 under mild conditions. In this paper, we utilize lattice-theoretic methods to investigate symplectic actions of finite groups G on K3 surfaces in odd characteristics. In the tame cases (i.e., the order of G is coprime with p) and all the superspecial cases, one can associate with the action a Leech pair which can be detected via Höhn-Mason's list. Notice that the superspecial cases have been resolved by Ohashi-Schütt. If the K3 surface is supersingular with Artin invariant at least two, we develop a new machinery called p-root pairs to detect possible symplectic finite group actions (without the assumption of tameness). The concept of p-root pair is closely related to root systems and Weyl groups. In particular, we recover many results by Dolgachev-Keum with a different method and give an upper bound for the exponent of p in |G|.

Abstract:We show that there is a good notion of irreducible sympelectic varieties of $\mathrm{K3}^{[n]}$-type over an arbitrary field of characteristic zero or $p > n + 1$. Then we construct mixed characteristic moduli spaces for these varieties. Our main result is a generalization of Ogus' crystalline Torelli theorem for supersingular K3 surfaces. For applications, we answer a slight variant of a question asked by F. Charles on moduli spaces of sheaves on K3 surfaces and give a crystalline Torelli theorem for supersingular cubic fourfolds.

Abstract:We classify fourfolds with trivial canonical bundle which are zero loci of general global sections of completely reducible equivariant vector bundles over exceptional homogeneous varieties of Picard number one. By computing their Hodge numbers, we see that there exist no hyperkähler fourfolds among them. This implies that a hyperkähler fourfold represented as the zero locus of a general global section of a completely reducible equivariant vector bundle over a rational homogeneous variety of Picard number one is one of the two cases described by Beauville--Donagi and Debarre--Voisin.

Abstract:Let T be a compact torus and X a nice compact T-space (say a manifold or variety). We introduce a functor assigning to X a "GKM-sheaf" F_X over a "GKM-hypergraph" G_X. Under the condition that X is equivariantly formal, the ring of global sections of F_X are identified with the equivariant cohomology, H_T^*(X; C). We show that GKM-sheaves provide a general framework able to incorporate numerous constructions in the GKM-theory literature. In the second half of the paper we apply these ideas to study the equivariant topology of the representation variety R_K := Hom(\pi_1(S), K) under conjugation by K, where S is a nonorientable surface and K is a compact connected Lie group. We prove that R_{SU(3)} is equivariantly formal for all S and compute its equivariant cohomology. . We also produce conjectural betti number formulas for some other Lie groups.

Convolution monodromy groups and the Shafarevich conjecture for hypersurfaces in tori

Abstract:The Shafarevich conjecture for a class of varieties over a number field posits the finitude of those with good reduction outside a finite set of primes. In the case of hypersurfaces in the torus $\mathbb{G}_m^n$, a natural class to consider are those with a fixed Newton polyhedron that are nondegenerate with respect to it. Using an approach similar to that of Lawrence-Sawin for abelian varieties (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2004.09046" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2004.09046">arXiv:2004.09046</a>), we prove the Shafarevich conjecture for certain classes of Newton polyhedra. In the course of our proof we construct a fiber functor for the Tannakian category of perverse sheaves on the torus in positive characteristic and compute the weights of the Frobenius on it, which leads to the big monodromy results which are key to this method.

Special affine representations for hyperbolic groups

Abstract:In this paper we extend the construction of special representations to Gromov hyperbolic groups which admits complementary series. We prove that these representations have a natural non-trivial reduced cohomology class $[c]$. An analogue of Kuhn-Vershik's formula is established and as a by-product a characterisation of hyperbolic groups that admit complementary series. Investigating dynamical properties of the cohomology class $[c]$ we prove an cocycle equidistribution theorem á la Roblin-Margulis and deduce the irreducibility of the associated affine actions. The irreducibility of the affine actions associated to the canonical class $[c]$ is original even in the case of uniform lattices in $SO(n,1)$, $SU(n,1)$ or $SL_2(\mathbb{Q}_p)$ with $n\ge 1$ and $p$ prime.

Abstract:We consider all irreducible rank-4 hypergeometric local systems defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ that support a rational one-dimensional variation of Hodge structures of weight 3 and Hodge vector $(1,1,1,1)$. Up to a natural equivalence there are only 47 cases. The first 14 cases have maximally unipotent monodromy at one point and have been extensively studied in the literature. We show that all 47 local systems are associated to families of generically smooth threefolds and we analyze the geometry and arithmetic at their conifold point.

Abstract:We construct local models for wildly ramified unitary similitude groups of odd dimension $n\geq 3$ with special parahoric level structure and signature $(n-1,1)$. We first give a lattice-theoretic description for parahoric subgroups using Bruhat-Tits theory in residue characteristic two, and apply them to define local models following the lead of Rapoport-Zink and Pappas-Rapoport. In our case, there are two conjugacy classes of special parahoric subgroups. We show that the local models are smooth for the one class and normal, Cohen-Macaulay for the other class. We also prove that they represent the v-sheaf local models of Scholze-Weinstein. Under some additional assumptions, we obtain an explicit moduli interpretation of the local models.

Arithmetic geometry of character varieties with regular monodromy, I

Abstract:We study character varieties arising as moduli of representations of an orientable surface group into a reductive group $G$. We first show that if $G/Z$ acts freely on the representation variety, then both the representation variety and the character variety are smooth and equidimensional. Next, we count points on a family of smooth character varieties; namely, those involving both regular semisimple and regular unipotent monodromy. In particular, we show that these varieties are polynomial count and obtain an explicit expression for their $E$-polynomials. Finally, by analysing the $E$-polynomial, we determine certain topological invariants of these varieties such as the Euler characteristic and the number of connected components. As an application, we give an example of a cohomologically rigid representation which is not physically rigid.

Abstract:In this paper, we define compact open subgroups of quasi-split even unitary groups for each even non-negative integers, and establish the theory of local newforms for irreducible tempered generic representations with a certain condition on the central characters. To do this, we use the local Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture, the local Rankin-Selberg integrals, and the local theta correspondence.

Abstract:Let X be a normal complex algebraic variety, and p a prime. We show that there exists an integer N=N(X, p) such that: any non-trivial, irreducible representation of the fundamental group of X, which arises from geometry, must be non-trivial mod p^N. The proof involves an analysis of the action of the Galois group of a finitely generated field on the etale fundamental group of X. We also prove many arithmetic statements about fundamental groups which are of independent interest, and give several applications.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that for every index perfect non-degenerate compact star-shaped hypersurface Σ ⊂ R 2 n , there exist at least n non-hyperbolic closed characteristics with even Maslovtype indices on Σ when n is even. When n is odd, there exist at least n closed characteristics with odd Maslov-type indices on Σ and at least ( n −1) of them are non-hyperbolic. Here we call a compact star-shaped hypersurface Σ ⊂ R 2 n index perfect if it carries only finitely many geometrically distinct prime closed characteristics, and every prime closed characteristic ( τ , y ) on Σ possesses positive mean index and whose Maslov-type index i ( y , m ) of its m -th iterate satisfies i ( y , m ) ≠ −1 when n is even, and i ( y , m ) ∉ {−2,−1, 0} when n is odd for all m ∈ N.

Abstract:Denote by $J_m$ the Jacobian variety of the hyperelliptic curve defined by the affine equation $y^2=x^m+1$ over $\mathbb{Q}$, where $m \geq 3$ is a fixed positive integer. We compute several interesting arithmetic invariants of $J_m$: its decomposition up to isogeny into simple abelian varieties, the minimal field $\mathbb{Q}(\operatorname{End}(J_m))$ over which its endomorphisms are defined, its connected monodromy field $\mathbb{Q}(\varepsilon_{J_m})$, and its Sato-Tate group. Currently, there is no general algorithm that computes these last two invariants. Furthermore, for large enough values of $m$, the abelian varieties $J_m$ provide non-trivial examples of high-dimensional phenomena, such as degeneracy and the non-triviality of the extension $\mathbb{Q}(\varepsilon_{J_m})/\mathbb{Q}(\operatorname{End}(J_m))$. We also describe the Sato-Tate group of an abelian variety, generalizing existing results that apply only to non-degenerate varieties, and prove an extension of a well-known formula of Gross-Koblitz that relates values of the classical and $p$-adic gamma functions at rational arguments.
