Abstract:Based on a suggestion by Katz, we determine the monodromy group of a certain hypergeometric sum to be $G_2$. Our approach is based on the uniformity results by Katz on the Fourier transform to deduce uniformity for the Tannakian monodromy groups.

Abstract:To a torus action on a complex vector space, Gelfand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky introduce a system of differential equations, called the GKZ hypergeometric system. Its solutions are GKZ hypergeometric functions. We study the ℓ-adic counterpart of the GKZ hypergeometric system, which we call the ℓ-adic GKZ hypergeometric sheaf. It is an object in the derived category of ℓ-adic sheaves on the affine space over a finite field. Traces of Frobenius on stalks of this object at rational points of the affine space define the hypergeometric functions over the finite field introduced by Gelfand and Graev. We prove that the ℓ-adic GKZ hypergeometric sheaf is perverse, calculate its rank, and prove that it is irreducible under the non-resonance condition. We also study the weight filtration of the GKZ hypergeometric sheaf, determine its lisse locus, and apply our result to the study of weights of twisted exponential sums.

Abstract:Denote by $J_m$ the Jacobian variety of the hyperelliptic curve defined by the affine equation $y^2=x^m+1$ over $\mathbb{Q}$, where $m \geq 3$ is a fixed positive integer. We compute several interesting arithmetic invariants of $J_m$: its decomposition up to isogeny into simple abelian varieties, the minimal field $\mathbb{Q}(\operatorname{End}(J_m))$ over which its endomorphisms are defined, its connected monodromy field $\mathbb{Q}(\varepsilon_{J_m})$, and its Sato-Tate group. Currently, there is no general algorithm that computes these last two invariants. Furthermore, for large enough values of $m$, the abelian varieties $J_m$ provide non-trivial examples of high-dimensional phenomena, such as degeneracy and the non-triviality of the extension $\mathbb{Q}(\varepsilon_{J_m})/\mathbb{Q}(\operatorname{End}(J_m))$. We also describe the Sato-Tate group of an abelian variety, generalizing existing results that apply only to non-degenerate varieties, and prove an extension of a well-known formula of Gross-Koblitz that relates values of the classical and $p$-adic gamma functions at rational arguments.

Abstract:Let T be a compact torus and X a nice compact T-space (say a manifold or variety). We introduce a functor assigning to X a "GKM-sheaf" F_X over a "GKM-hypergraph" G_X. Under the condition that X is equivariantly formal, the ring of global sections of F_X are identified with the equivariant cohomology, H_T^*(X; C). We show that GKM-sheaves provide a general framework able to incorporate numerous constructions in the GKM-theory literature. In the second half of the paper we apply these ideas to study the equivariant topology of the representation variety R_K := Hom(\pi_1(S), K) under conjugation by K, where S is a nonorientable surface and K is a compact connected Lie group. We prove that R_{SU(3)} is equivariantly formal for all S and compute its equivariant cohomology. . We also produce conjectural betti number formulas for some other Lie groups.

Hypergeometric $\ell$-adic sheaves for reductive groups

Abstract:We define the hypergeometric exponential sum associated to a finite family of representations of a reductive group over a finite field. We introduce the hypergeometric $\ell$-adic sheaf to describe the behavior of the hypergeometric exponential sum. It is a perverse sheaf, and it is the counterpart in characteristic $p$ of the $A$-hypergeometric $\mathcal D$-module introduced by Kapranov. Using the theory of the Fourier transform for vector bundles over a general base developed by Wang, we are able to study the hypergeometric $\ell$-adic sheaf via the hypergeometric $\mathcal D$-module. We apply our results to the estimation of the hypergeometric exponential sum.

Hypergeometric Motives from Euler Integral Representations

Abstract:We revisit certain one-parameter families of affine covers arising naturally from Euler's integral representation of hypergeometric functions. We introduce a partial compactification of this family. We show that the zeta function of the fibers in the family can be written as an explicit product of $L$-series attached to nondegenerate hypergeometric motives and zeta functions of tori, twisted by Hecke Grossencharacters. This permits a combinatorial algorithm for computing the Hodge numbers of the family.

Equivariant D-modules on 2x2xn hypermatrices

Abstract:We study D-modules and related invariants on the space of 2 x 2 x n hypermatrices for n >= 3, which has finitely many orbits under the action of G = GL_2 x GL_2 x GL_n. We describe the category of coherent G-equivariant D-modules as the category of representations of a quiver with relations. We classify the simple equivariant D-modules, determine their characteristic cycles and find special representations that appear in their G-structures. We determine the explicit D-module structure of the local cohomology groups with supports given by orbit closures. As a consequence, we calculate the Lyubeznik numbers and intersection cohomology groups of the orbit closures. All but one of the orbit closures have rational singularities: we use local cohomology to prove that the one exception is neither normal nor Cohen--Macaulay. While our results display special behavior in the cases n=3 and n=4, they are completely uniform for n >= 5.

Harmonic $G_2$-structures on almost Abelian Lie groups

Abstract:We consider left-invariant $G_2$-structures on $7$-dimensional almost Abelian Lie groups. Also, we characterise the associated torsion forms and the full torsion tensor according to the Lie bracket $A$ of the corresponding Lie algebra. In those terms, we establish the algebraic condition on $A$ for each of the possible $16$-torsion classes of a $G_2$-structure. In particular, we show that four of those torsion classes are not admissible, since $\tau_3=0$ implies $\tau_0=0$. Finally, we use the above results to provide the algebraic criteria on $A$, satisfying the harmonic condition $div T=0$, and this allows to identify which torsion classes are harmonic.

Abstract:We give an explicit formula for the duality, previously conjectured by Horja and Borisov, of two systems of GKZ hypergeometric PDEs. We prove that in the appropriate limit this duality can be identified with the inverse of the Euler characteristics pairing on cohomology of certain toric Deligne-Mumford stacks, by way of Γ-series cohomology valued solutions to the equations.

Abstract:We initiate the study of torsion-free algebraically hyperbolic groups; these groups generalise torsion-free hyperbolic groups and are intricately related to groups with no Baumslag--Solitar subgroups. Indeed, for groups of cohomological dimension $2$ we prove that algebraic hyperbolicity is equivalent to containing no Baumslag--Solitar subgroups. This links algebraically hyperbolic groups to two famous questions of Gromov; recent work has shown these questions to have negative answers in general, but they remain open for groups of cohomological dimension $2$. We also prove that algebraically hyperbolic groups are CSA, and so have canonical abelian JSJ-decompositions. In the two-generated case we give a precise description of the form of these decompositions.

Abstract:In this paper we study higher even Gaussian maps of the canonical bundle on hyperelliptic curves and we determine their rank, giving explicit descriptions of their kernels. Then we use this descriptions to investigate the hyperelliptic Torelli map $j_h$ and its second fundamental form. We study isotropic subspaces of the tangent space $T_{{\mathcal H}_g, [C]}$ to the moduli space ${\mathcal H}_g$ of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$ at a point $[C]$, with respect to the second fundamental form $\rho_{HE}$ of $j_h$. In particular, for any Weierstrass point $p \in C$, we construct a subspace $V_p$ of dimension $\lfloor\frac{g}{2} \rfloor$ of $T_{{\mathcal H}_g, [C]}$ generated by higher Schiffer variations at $p$, such that the only isotropic tangent direction $\zeta \in V_p$ for the image of $\rho_{HE}$ is the standard Schiffer variation $\xi_p$ at the Weierstrass point $p \in C$.

Hasse principle for Kummer varieties in the case of generic 2-torsion

Abstract:Conditional on finiteness of relevant Shafarevich--Tate groups, Harpaz and Skorobogatov used Swinnerton-Dyer's descent-fibration method to establish the Hasse principle for Kummer varieties associated to a 2-covering of a principally polarised abelian variety under certain largeness assumptions on its mod 2 Galois image. Their method breaks down however when the Galois image is maximal, due to the possible failure of the Shafarevich--Tate group of quadratic twists of A to have square order. In this work we overcome this obstruction by combining second descent ideas in the spirit of Harpaz and Smith with results on the parity of 2-infinity Selmer ranks in quadratic twist families. This allows Swinnerton-Dyer's method to be successfully applied to K3 surfaces arising as quotients of 2-coverings of Jacobians of genus 2 curves with no rational Weierstrass points.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a number field with ring of integers $\mathfrak{O}$ and let $\mathcal{G}$ be a Chevalley group scheme not of type $\mathtt{E}_8$, $\mathtt{F}_4$ or $\mathtt{G}_2$. We use the theory of Tits buildings and a result of Tóth on Steinberg modules to prove that $H^{\operatorname{vcd}}(\mathcal{G}(\mathfrak{O}); \mathbb{Q}) = 0$ if $\mathfrak{O}$ is Euclidean.

Convolution monodromy groups and the Shafarevich conjecture for hypersurfaces in tori

Abstract:The Shafarevich conjecture for a class of varieties over a number field posits the finitude of those with good reduction outside a finite set of primes. In the case of hypersurfaces in the torus $\mathbb{G}_m^n$, a natural class to consider are those with a fixed Newton polyhedron that are nondegenerate with respect to it. Using an approach similar to that of Lawrence-Sawin for abelian varieties (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2004.09046" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2004.09046">arXiv:2004.09046</a>), we prove the Shafarevich conjecture for certain classes of Newton polyhedra. In the course of our proof we construct a fiber functor for the Tannakian category of perverse sheaves on the torus in positive characteristic and compute the weights of the Frobenius on it, which leads to the big monodromy results which are key to this method.

The Generalized Torelli Problem through the geometry of the Gauss map

Abstract:Given a non-hyperelliptic curve $C\in\mathscr{M}_g$ and $2\leq n\leq g-2$, we prove that the generic fiber of the Gauss map on $W_n$ has one element and we characterize its multiple locus. Assuming that $C$ doesn't have a $\mathfrak{g}_{n+k+1}^{k+1}$, for $1\leq k\leq n-1\leq g-3$, we solve the problem of reconstructing each $\mathfrak{g}_{n+k}^k$ and the dual hypersurface of the image of its associated morphism, through information encoded in the Gauss map. For this purpose we introduce the notion of $\left(n+k\right)$-intersection loci and we study their dimensions. In the hyperelliptic case we prove that the image of the Gauss map is a union of sets whose closures are birational to their complete $\mathfrak{g}_{n+k}^k$, for each $1\leq k\leq n\leq g-1$, and that these also contain a copy of the dual hypersurface of the image of its associated morphism. From the case $k=n$ we deduce that the closure of the image of the Gauss map is birational to $\mathbb{P}^n$.

Universal monodromic tilting sheaves

Abstract:Let $G$ be a complex adjoint reductive group and $R$ be the group ring of the coweight lattice. We construct the universal monodromic big tilting sheaf on base affine space and show that its endomorphisms are $R \otimes_{R^W} R$. Our arguments are self contained, so formal completion implies a short new proof of Soergel's prounipotent endomorphismensatz with arbitrary field coefficients. We give a Soergel bimodules description of the universal monodromic Hecke category and deduce a conjecture of Eberhardt that uncompletes Koszul duality.

Abstract:Following an outline of Rezk, we give a construction of complex-analytic $G$-equivariant elliptic cohomology for an arbitrary compact Lie group $G$ and we prove some of its fundamental properties. The construction is parametrised over the orbit category of the groupoid of principal $G$-bundles over 2-dimensional tori and generalises Grojnowski's construction of equivariant elliptic cohomology.

Abstract:We prove two multivariate -binomial identities conjectured by Bousseau, Brini and van Garrel [Geom. Topol. 28 (2024), 393-496, arXiv:2011.08830] which give generating series for Gromov-Witten invariants of two specific log Calabi-Yau surfaces. The key identity in all the proofs is Jackson's -analogue of the Pfaff-Saalschütz summation formula from the theory of basic hypergeometric series.
