Abstract:We show that every finitely generated residually finite torsion group $G$ embeds in a finitely generated torsion group $\Gamma$ that is residually finite simple. In particular we show the existence of finitely generated infinite torsion groups that are residually finite simple, which answers a question of Olshanskii and Osin.

Abstract:We present a new method to construct finitely generated, residually finite, infinite torsion groups. In contrast to known constructions, a profinite perspective enables us to control finite quotients and normal subgroups of these torsion groups. As an application, we describe the first examples of residually finite, hereditarily just-infinite groups with positive first $\ell^2$-Betti-number. In addition, we show that these groups have polynomial normal subgroup growth, which answers a question of Barnea and Schlage-Puchta.

Finiteness properties of torsion fields of abelian varieties

Abstract:Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over a field $K.$ We study finite generation properties of the profinite group $\mathrm{Gal}(\Omega/K)$ and of certain closed normal subgroups thereof, where $\Omega$ is the torsion field of $A$ over $K$. In fact, we establish more general finite generation properties for monodromy groups attached to smooth projective varieties via étale cohomology. We apply this in order to give an independent proof and generalizations of a recent result of Checcoli and Dill about small exponent subfields of $\Omega/K$ in the number field case. We also give an application of our finite generation results in the realm of permanence principles for varieties with the weak Hilbert property.

Abstract:The torsion conjecture says: for any abelian variety A defined over a number field k , the order of the torsion subgroup of A ( k ) is bounded by a constant C ( k, d ) which depends only on the number field k and the dimension d of the abelian variety. The torsion conjecture remains open in general. However, in this paper, a short argument shows that the conjecture is true for more general fields if we consider linear groups instead of abelian varieties. If G is a connected linear algebraic group defined over a field k which is finitely generated over ℚ, Γ is a torsion subgroup of G ( k ). Then the order of Γ is bounded by a constant C ′( k, d ) which depends only on k and the dimension d of G .

Abstract:We show that finitely generated groups which are Liouville and without infinite finite-dimensional linear representations must have a global fixed point whenever they act by isometry on a finite-dimensional complete CAT(0)-space. This provides a partial answer to an old question in geometric group theory and proves partly a conjecture formulated by Norin, Osajda, and Przytycki. It applies in particular to Grigorchuk's groups of intermediate growth and other branch groups as well as to simple groups with the Liouville property such as those found by Matte Bon and by Nekrashevych. The method of proof uses ultralimits, equivariant harmonic maps, subharmonic functions, horofunctions and random walks.

Some torsion-free solvable groups with few subquotients

Abstract:We construct finitely generated torsion-free solvable groups $G$ that have infinite rank, but such that all finitely generated torsion-free metabelian subquotients of $G$ are virtually abelian. In particular all finitely generated metabelian subgroups of $G$ are virtually abelian. The existence of such groups shows that there is no "torsion-free version" of P. Kropholler's theorem, which characterises solvable groups of infinite rank via their metabelian subquotients.

Abstract:Suppose a residually finite group $G$ acts cocompactly on a contractible complex with strict fundamental domain $Q$, where the stabilizers are either trivial or have normal $\mathbb{Z}$-subgroups. Let $\partial Q$ be the subcomplex of $Q$ with nontrivial stabilizers. Our main result is a computation of the homology torsion growth of a chain of finite index normal subgroups of $G$. We show that independent of the chain, the normalized torsion limits to the torsion of $\partial Q$, shifted a degree. Under milder assumptions of acyclicity of nontrivial stabilizers, we show similar formulas for the mod p-homology growth. We also obtain formulas for the universal and the usual $L^2$-torsion of $G$ in terms of the torsion of stabilizers and topology of $\partial Q$. In particular, we get complete answers for right-angled Artin groups, which shows they satisfy a torsion analogue of the Lück approximation theorem.

Abstract:Abstract We study two classes of torsion classes that generalize functorially finite torsion classes, that is, semistable torsion classes and morphism torsion classes. Semistable torsion classes are parametrized by the elements in the real Grothendieck group up to TF equivalence. We give a close connection between TF equivalence classes and the cones given by canonical decompositions of the spaces of projective presentations due to Derksen–Fei. More strongly, for ‐tame algebras and hereditary algebras, we prove that TF equivalence classes containing lattice points are exactly the cones given by canonical decompositions. One of the key steps in our proof is a general description of semistable torsion classes in terms of morphism torsion classes. We also answer a question by Derksen–Fei negatively by giving examples of algebras that do not satisfy the ray condition. As an application of our results, we give an explicit description of TF equivalence classes of preprojective algebras of type .

Abstract:A tubular group $G$ is a finite graph of groups with $\mathbb{Z}^2$ vertex groups and $\mathbb{Z}$ edge groups. We characterize residually finite tubular groups: $G$ is residually finite if and only if its edge groups are separable. Methods are provided to determine if $G$ is residually finite. When $G$ has a single vertex group an algorithm is given to determine residual finiteness.

Abstract:For a finite multiset $A$ of an abelian group $G$, let $\text{FS}(A)$ denote the multiset of the $2^{|A|}$ subset sums of $A$. It is natural to ask to what extent $A$ can be reconstructed from $\text{FS}(A)$. We fully solve this problem for $2$-torsion-free groups $G$ by giving characterizations, both algebraic and combinatorial, of the fibers of $\text{FS}$. Equivalently, we characterize all pairs of multisets $A,B$ with $\text{FS}(A)=\text{FS}(B)$. Our results build on recent work of Ciprietti and the first author.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{T}$ denote the class of finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent groups. For a group $G$ let $F(G)$ be the set of isomorphism classes of finite quotients of $G$. Pickel proved that if $G \in \mathcal{T}$, then the set $\mathfrak{g}(G)$ of isomorphism classes of groups $H \in \mathcal{T}$ with $F(G)=F(H)$ is finite. We give an explicit description of the sets $\mathfrak{g}(G)$ for the $\mathcal{T}$-groups $G$ of Hirsch length at most $5$. Based on this, we show that for each Hirsch length $n\geq 4$ and for each $m \in \mathbb{N}$ there is a $\mathcal{T}$-group $G$ of Hirsch length $n$ with $\vert\mathfrak{g}(G)\vert\geq m$.

Abstract:We prove that if $G$ is a finite simple group, then all irreducible complex representations of $G$ by be realized over the real numbers if and only if every element of $G$ may be written as a product of two involutions in $G$. This follows from our result that if $q$ is a power of $2$, then all irreducible complex representations of the orthogonal groups $\mathrm{O}^{\pm}(2n, \mathbb{F}_q)$ may be realized over the real numbers. We also obtain generating functions for the sums of degrees of several sets of unipotent characters of finite orthogonal groups, and we obtain a twisted version of our main result for a broad family of finite classical groups.

Abstract:We investigate whether a finitely generated profinite group G could have a finitely generated infinite image. A result of Dan Segal shows that this is impossible if G is prosoluble. We prove that such an image does not exist if G is semisimple or nonuniversal. We also investigate the existense of dense normal subgroups in $G$.

Abstract:We prove that virtually torsion-free, residually finite groups that are inner-amenable and non-amenable have the cheap 1-rebuilding property, a notion recently introduced by Abért, Bergeron, Frączyk and Gaboriau. As a consequence, the first $\ell^2$-Betti number with arbitrary field coefficients and log-torsion in degree 1 vanish for these groups. This extends results previously known for amenable groups to inner-amenable groups. We use a structure theorem of Tucker-Drob for inner-amenable groups showing the existence of a chain of q-normal subgroups.

Abstract:Given an arbitrary, finitely presented, residually finite group $\Gamma$, one can construct a finitely generated, residually finite, free-by-free group $M_\Gamma = F_\infty\rtimes F_4$ and an embedding $M_\Gamma \hookrightarrow (F_4\ast \Gamma)\times F_4$ that induces an isomorphism of profinite completions. In particular, there is a free-by-free group whose profinite completion contains $\widehat{\Gamma}$ as a retract.

Abstract:We characterize which groups splitting as finite graphs of free groups with cyclic edge groups are residually finite. Such a group $G$ is residually finite if and only if all its Baumslag-Solitar subgroups are residually finite. From a presentation of $G$, we construct a finite labeled graph $\Gamma$, and show that residual finiteness of $G$ is equivalent to an easily-detectable property of this graph. This characterization proves a conjecture of Wise.

Abstract:Given an inverse semigroup $G_0$ of bounded type, we show, along with some other assumptions, that if the set of incompressible elements of $G_0$ is finite, then any finitely generated subgroup $G$ of the topological full group $\mathsf{F}(G_0)$ that is orbit equivalent to $G_0$ has subexponential growth with a bounded power in the exponent.

Abstract:We prove finiteness properties for groups of homeomorphisms that have finitely many "singular points", and we describe the normal structure of such groups. As an application, we prove that every countable abelian group can be embedded into a finitely presented simple group, verifying the Boone-Higman conjecture for countable abelian groups. Indeed, we describe a specific 2-generated, $\mathrm{F}_\infty$ simple group $V\mathcal{A}$ of homeomorphisms of the Cantor set that contains every countable abelian group. As a second application, we prove that if $G$ is a bounded automata group then the associated Röver-Nekrashevych groups $V_{d,r}G$ have type $\mathrm{F}_\infty$, verifying a conjecture of Nekrashevych for a large class of contracting self-similar groups. Among others, this result applies to Röver-Nekrashevych groups associated to Gupta-Sidki groups and the basilica group.

Abstract:Henry Wilton classified when a prime three-manifold $M$ has a residually free fundamental group $\pi_1 M$. We prove that the groups $\pi_1 M\times \mathbb Z^n$ are profinitely rigid within finitely generated residually free groups. We also establish other profinite invariants of the class of residually free groups such as coherence and subgroup separability. In the course of our proofs, we generalise a lemma of Wilton and Zalesskii on profinitely recognising when a central extension of groups splits.
