Abstract:We exhibit the first examples of residually finite non-linear Gromov hyperbolic groups. Our examples are constructed as amalgamated products of torsion-free cocompact lattices in the rank 1 Lie group \mathsf{Sp}(d,1) , d \geq2 , along maximal cyclic subgroups.

Abstract:We prove that the Gromov hyperbolic groups obtained by the strict hyperbolization procedure of Charney and Davis are virtually compact special, hence linear and residually finite. Our strategy consists in constructing an action of a hyperbolized group on a certain dual CAT(0) cubical complex. As a result, all the common applications of strict hyperbolization are shown to provide manifolds with virtually compact special fundamental group. In particular, we obtain examples of closed negatively curved Riemannian manifolds whose fundamental groups are linear and virtually algebraically fiber.

Abstract:We initiate the study of torsion-free algebraically hyperbolic groups; these groups generalise torsion-free hyperbolic groups and are intricately related to groups with no Baumslag--Solitar subgroups. Indeed, for groups of cohomological dimension $2$ we prove that algebraic hyperbolicity is equivalent to containing no Baumslag--Solitar subgroups. This links algebraically hyperbolic groups to two famous questions of Gromov; recent work has shown these questions to have negative answers in general, but they remain open for groups of cohomological dimension $2$. We also prove that algebraically hyperbolic groups are CSA, and so have canonical abelian JSJ-decompositions. In the two-generated case we give a precise description of the form of these decompositions.

Frattini subgroups of hyperbolic-like groups

Abstract:We study Frattini subgroups of various generalizations of hyperbolic groups. For any countable group $G$ admitting a general type action on a hyperbolic space $S$, we show that the induced action of the Frattini subgroup $\Phi(G)$ on $S$ has bounded orbits. This implies that $\Phi(G)$ is "small" compared to $G$; in particular, $|G:\Phi(G)|=\infty$. In contrast, for any finitely generated non-cyclic group $Q$ with $\Phi(Q)=\{ 1\}$, we construct an infinite lacunary hyperbolic group $L$ such that $L/\Phi(L)\cong Q$; in particular, the Frattini subgroup of an infinite lacunary hyperbolic group can have finite index. As an application, we obtain the first examples of invariably generated, infinite, lacunary hyperbolic groups.

Abstract:Let G be a real reductive group with an involution σ on it. Let H be an open subgroup of Gσ with a character χ on it. Associated to a “theta stable”, “σ-split” parabolic subalgebra, and using the Zuckerman functor, we construct representations of G together with χ-equivariant linear functionals on them. We apply this construction to prove a non-vanishing hypothesis of H. Grobner and A. Raghuram in the study of algebraicity of critical L-values.

Abstract:We give a simple construction of Gromov hyperbolic Coxeter groups of arbitrarily large virtual cohomological dimension. Our construction provides new examples of such groups. Using this one can construct e.g. new groups having some interesting asphericity properties.

Abstract:For every $m\geq 2$ we produce an example of a non-hyperbolic finitely presented subgroup $H < G$ of a hyperbolic group $G$, which is the kernel of a surjective homomorphism $\phi: G\to \mathbb{Z}^m$. The examples we produce are of finiteness type $F_2$ and not $F_3$.

Special affine representations for hyperbolic groups

Abstract:In this paper we extend the construction of special representations to Gromov hyperbolic groups which admits complementary series. We prove that these representations have a natural non-trivial reduced cohomology class $[c]$. An analogue of Kuhn-Vershik's formula is established and as a by-product a characterisation of hyperbolic groups that admit complementary series. Investigating dynamical properties of the cohomology class $[c]$ we prove an cocycle equidistribution theorem á la Roblin-Margulis and deduce the irreducibility of the associated affine actions. The irreducibility of the affine actions associated to the canonical class $[c]$ is original even in the case of uniform lattices in $SO(n,1)$, $SU(n,1)$ or $SL_2(\mathbb{Q}_p)$ with $n\ge 1$ and $p$ prime.

Abstract:We prove that if a compact $n$-manifold admits a sequence of residual covers that form a coboundary expander in dimension $n-2$, then the manifold has Gromov-hyperbolic fundamental group. In particular, residual sequences of covers of non-hyperbolic compact connected irreducible 3-manifolds are not 1-coboundary expanders.

Abstract:We prove that hyperbolic groups with logarithmic separation profiles split over cyclic groups. This shows that such groups can be inductively built from Fuchsian groups and free groups by amalgamations and HNN extensions over finite or virtually cyclic groups. However, we show that not all groups admitting such a hierarchy have logarithmic separation profile by providing an example of a surface amalgam over a cyclic group with superlogarithmic separation profile.

Abstract:Abstract We generalise a theorem of Gersten on surjectivity of the restriction map in $$\ell ^{\infty }$$ l ∞ -cohomology of groups. This leads to applications on subgroups of hyperbolic groups, quasi-isometric distinction of finitely generated groups and $$\ell ^{\infty }$$ l ∞ -cohomology calculations for some well-known classes of groups. Along the way, we obtain hyperbolicity criteria for groups of type $$FP_2({{\mathbb {Q}}})$$ F P 2 ( Q ) and for those satisfying a rational homological linear isoperimetric inequality, answering a question of Arora and Martínez-Pedroza.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a locally compact second countable group. We present a comprehensive treatment of the classical Hopf Decomposition (also known as the Conservative-Dissipative Decomposition) for general nonsingular $G$-spaces, and provide several fundamentally different characterizations of it. Subsequently, we establish a complete structure theorem for totally dissipative nonsingular $G$-spaces through the construction of \emph{Krengel $G$-spaces}, extending Krengel's structure theorem on flows.

Abstract:This article is part of the program of studying large-scale geometric properties of totally disconnected locally compact groups, TDLC-groups, by analogy with the theory for discrete groups. We provide a characterization of hyperbolic TDLC-groups, in terms of homological isoperimetric inequalities. This characterization is used to prove the main result of the article: for hyperbolic TDLC-groups with rational discrete cohomological dimension $\leq 2$, hyperbolicity is inherited by compactly presented closed subgroups. As a consequence, every compactly presented closed subgroup of the automorphism group $\mathrm{Aut}(X)$ of a negatively curved locally finite $2$-dimensional building $X$ is a hyperbolic TDLC-group, whenever $\mathrm{Aut}(X)$ acts with finitely many orbits on $X$. Examples where this result applies include hyperbolic Bourdon's buildings. We revisit the construction of small cancellation quotients of amalgamated free products, and verify that it provides examples of hyperbolic TDLC-groups of rational discrete cohomological dimension $2$ when applied to amalgamated products of profinite groups over open subgroups. We raise the question of whether our main result can be extended to locally compact hyperbolic groups if rational discrete cohomological dimension is replaced by asymptotic dimension. We prove that this is the case for discrete groups and sketch an argument for TDLC-groups.

Abstract:The flat-rank of a totally disconnected, locally compact group G is an integer, which is an invariant of G as a topological group. We generalize the concept of hyperbolic groups to the topological context and show that a totally disconnected, locally compact, hyperbolic group has flat-rank at most 1. It follows that the simple totally disconnected locally compact groups constructed by Paulin and Haglund have flat-rank at most 1.

Abstract:We introduce a hyperbolic reflection group trick which builds closed aspherical manifolds out of compact ones and preserves hyperbolicity, residual finiteness, and—for almost all primes p — -homology growth above the middle dimension. We use this trick, embedding theory and manifold topology to construct Gromov hyperbolic 7-manifolds that do not virtually fiber over a circle out of graph products of large finite groups.

Using positive characteristic methods, we give a fairly exhaustive answer to this question. An example application of our techniques is: if dim ⁡ ( X ) ≥ 3 \dim (X)\geq 3 , Y Y is smooth, Ω Y 1 \Omega ^1_Y is nef, and dim ⁡ ( Y ) > dim ⁡ ( D ) , \dim (Y)> \dim (D), the restriction map r r is an isomorphism. Taking Y Y to be the classifying space of a finite group B G BG , the moduli space of pointed curves M g , n \mathscr {M}_{g,n} , the moduli space of principally polarized Abelian varieties A g \mathscr {A}_g , certain period domains, and various other moduli spaces, one obtains many new and classical Lefschetz hyperplane theorems.

Finite subgroups of the profinite completion of good groups

Abstract:Let $G$ be a residually finite, good group of finite virtual cohomological dimension. We prove that the natural monomorphism $G\hookrightarrow\hat{G}$ induces a bijective correspondence between conjugacy classes of finite $p$-subgroups of $G$ and those of its profinite completion $\hat{G}$. Moreover, we prove that the centralizers and normalizers in $\hat{G}$ of finite $p$-subgroups of $G$ are the closures of the respective centralizers and normalizers in $G$. With somewhat more restrictive hypotheses, we prove the same results for finite solvable subgroups of $G$. In the last section, we give a few applications of this theorem to hyperelliptic mapping class groups and virtually compact special toral relatively hyperbolic groups (these include fundamental groups of $3$-orbifolds and of uniform standard arithmetic hyperbolic orbifolds).
