Abstract:Let $G$ be a real Lie group and $\Gamma < G$ be a discrete subgroup of $G$. Is $\Gamma$ residually finite? This paper describes known positive and negative results then poses some questions whose answers will lead to a fairly complete answer for lattices.

Abstract:We characterize which groups splitting as finite graphs of free groups with cyclic edge groups are residually finite. Such a group $G$ is residually finite if and only if all its Baumslag-Solitar subgroups are residually finite. From a presentation of $G$, we construct a finite labeled graph $\Gamma$, and show that residual finiteness of $G$ is equivalent to an easily-detectable property of this graph. This characterization proves a conjecture of Wise.

Abstract:A countable group is residually finite if every nontrivial element can act nontrivially on a finite set. When a group fails to be residually finite, we might want to measure how drastically it fails - it could be that only finitely many conjugacy classes of elements fail to act nontrivially on a finite set, or it could be that the group has no nontrivial actions on finite sets whatsoever. We define a hierarchy of properties, and construct groups which become arbitrarily complicated in this sense.

Abstract:We show that real semi-simple Lie groups of higher rank contain (infinitely generated) discrete subgroups with full limit sets in the corresponding Furstenberg boundaries. Additionally, we provide criteria under which discrete subgroups of $G = \operatorname{SL}(3,\mathbb{R})$ must have a full limit set in the Furstenberg boundary of $G$. In the appendix, we show the the existence of Zariski-dense discrete subgroups $\Gamma$ of $\operatorname{SL}(n,\mathbb{R})$, where $n\ge 3$, such that the Jordan projection of some loxodromic element $\gamma \in\Gamma$ lies on the boundary of the limit cone of $\Gamma$.

Abstract:Let G be a real reductive group with an involution σ on it. Let H be an open subgroup of Gσ with a character χ on it. Associated to a “theta stable”, “σ-split” parabolic subalgebra, and using the Zuckerman functor, we construct representations of G together with χ-equivariant linear functionals on them. We apply this construction to prove a non-vanishing hypothesis of H. Grobner and A. Raghuram in the study of algebraicity of critical L-values.

Abstract:Discrete subgroups of SL(2,R) are well understood, and classified by the geometry of the corresponding hyperbolic surfaces. Discrete subgroups of higher-rank semisimple Lie groups, such as SL(n,R) for n>2, remain more mysterious. While lattices in this setting are rigid, there also exist more flexible, "thinner" discrete subgroups, which may have large and interesting deformation spaces, giving rise in particular to so-called higher Teichm\"uller theory. We survey recent progress in constructing and understanding such discrete subgroups from a geometric and dynamical viewpoint.

Abstract:We provide algorithms to decide whether a finitely generated subgroup of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ is discrete, solve the constructive membership problem for finitely generated discrete subgroups of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{R})$, and compute a fundamental domain for a finitely generated Fuchsian group. These algorithms have been implemented in Magma for groups defined over real algebraic number fields.

Abstract:We introduce a new real valued invariant for finitely presented groups called residual deficiency. Its main property is the following. Let G be a finitely presented group. If the residual deficiency of G is greater than one, then G has a finite index subgroup with deficiency greater than one. The latter property is strong. For instance, such a group is large, has positive rank gradient and positive first L^2-Betti number, among other properties. We also compute the residual deficiency of some well known families of presentations, prove that residual deficiency minus one is supermultiplicative with respect to finite index normal subgroups and find lower bounds for the residual deficiency of quotients.

Abstract:Let r be a fixed positive integer. A group G has (Prüfer) rank r if every finitely generated subgroup of G can be generated by r elements and r is the least such integer. In this paper we consider groups that are residually of rank r . Among other things we prove that a periodic group that is residually (of rank r and locally finite) is locally finite and obtain the structure of groups that are residually (of rank r and locally soluble). A number of examples are also given to illustrate the limitations of these theorems.

Abstract:If Gamma is a nonuniform, irreducible lattice in a semisimple Lie group whose real rank is greater than 1, we show Gamma contains a subgroup that is isomorphic to a nonuniform, irreducible lattice in either SL(3,R), SL(3,C), or a direct product SL(2,R)^m x SL(2,C)^n$, with m + n > 1. (In geometric terms, this can be interpreted as a statement about the existence of totally geodesic subspaces of finite-volume, noncompact, locally symmetric spaces of higher rank.) Another formulation of the result states that if G is any isotropic, almost simple algebraic group over Q (the rational numbers), such that the real rank of G is greater than 1, then G contains an isotropic, almost simple Q-subgroup H, such that H is quasisplit, and the real rank of H is greater than 1.

Finite-sided Dirichlet domains and Anosov subgroups

Abstract:We consider Dirichlet domains for Anosov subgroups $\Gamma$ of semisimple Lie groups $G$ acting on the associated symmetric space $G/K$. More precisely, we consider certain Finsler metrics on $G/K$ and a sufficient condition so that every Dirichlet domain for $\Gamma$ is finite-sided in a strong sense. Under the same condition, the group $\Gamma$ admits a domain of discontinuity in a flag manifold where the Dirichlet domain extends to a compact fundamental domain. As an application we show that Dirichlet-Selberg domains for $n$-Anosov subgroups $\Gamma$ of $SL(2n,\mathbb{R})$ are finite-sided when all singular values of elements of $\Gamma$ diverge exponentially in the word length. For every $d\ge 3$, there are projective Anosov subgroups of $SL(d,\mathbb{R})$ which do not satisfy this property and have Dirichlet-Selberg domains with infinitely many sides. More generally, we give a sufficient condition for a subgroup of $SL(d,\mathbb{R})$ to admit a Dirichlet-Selberg domain whose intersection with an invariant convex set is finite-sided.

Abstract:We establish a general criterion for the finite presentability of subdirect products of groups and use this to characterize finitely presented residually free groups. We prove that, for all $n\in\mathbb{N}$, a residually free group is of type ${\rm{FP}}_n$ if and only if it is of type ${\rm{F}}_n$. New families of subdirect products of free groups are constructed, including the first examples of finitely presented subgroups that are neither ${\rm{FP}}_\infty$ nor of Stallings-Bieri type. The template for these examples leads to a more constructive characterization of finitely presented residually free groups up to commensurability. We show that the class of finitely presented residually free groups is recursively enumerable and present a reduction of the isomorphism problem. A new algorithm is described which, given a finite presentation of a residually free group, constructs a canonical embedding into a direct product of finitely many limit groups. The (multiple) conjugacy and membership problems for finitely presented subgroups of residually free groups are solved.

Abstract:For every positive integer $n$ we construct an example of a subgroup $L< G$ of a linear ${\rm CAT}(0)$ group $G$ such that $L$ is of finiteness type $\mathcal{F}_{n-1}$ and not $\mathcal{F}_n$, and $L$ does not admit a representation into $\mathsf{GL}_d(k)$ which is a quasi-isometric embedding for any local field $k$. We further prove that there is a faithful representation of $L$ into some $\mathsf{GL}_{\ell}(\mathbb{C})$ which is not the restriction of any representation of $G$. This generalises a family of fibre products of type $\mathcal{F}_2$ not $\mathcal{F}_3$ with these properties constructed by the second author.

Abstract:A tubular group $G$ is a finite graph of groups with $\mathbb{Z}^2$ vertex groups and $\mathbb{Z}$ edge groups. We characterize residually finite tubular groups: $G$ is residually finite if and only if its edge groups are separable. Methods are provided to determine if $G$ is residually finite. When $G$ has a single vertex group an algorithm is given to determine residual finiteness.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a real centre-free semisimple Lie group without compact factors. I prove that irreducible lattices in $G$ are rigid under two types of sublinear distortions. The first result is that the class of lattices in groups that do not admit $\mathbb{R}$-rank $1$ factors is $\textit{SBE complete}$: if $\Lambda$ is an abstract finitely generated group that is Sublinearly BiLipschitz Equivalent (SBE) to a lattice $\Gamma\leq G$, then $\Lambda$ can be homomorphically mapped into $G$ with finite kernel and image a lattice in $G$. For such $G$ this generalizes the well known quasi-isometric completeness of lattices. The second result concerns sublinear distortions within $G$ itself, and holds without any restriction on the rank of the factors: if $\Lambda\leq G$ is a discrete subgroup that $\textit{sublinearly covers}$ a lattice $\Gamma\leq G$, then $\Lambda$ is itself a lattice.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth curve over a finitely generated field $k$, and let $\ell$ be a prime different from the characteristic of $k$. We analyze the dynamics of the Galois action on the deformation rings of mod $\ell$ representations of the geometric fundamental group of $X$. Using this analysis, we prove analogues of the Shafarevich and Fontaine-Mazur finiteness conjectures for function fields over algebraically closed fields in arbitrary characteristic, and a weak variant of the Frey-Mazur conjecture for function fields in characteristic zero. For example, we show that if $X$ is a normal, connected variety over $\mathbb{C}$, the (typically infinite) set of representations of $\pi_1(X^{\text{an}})$ into $GL_n(\overline{\mathbb{Q}_\ell})$, which come from geometry, has no limit points. As a corollary, we deduce that if $L$ is a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_\ell$, then the set of representations of $\pi_1(X^{\text{an}})$ into $GL_n(L)$, which arise from geometry, is finite.

Abstract:We prove the following conjecture of Margulis. Let $G$ be a higher rank simple Lie group and let $\Lambda\le G$ be a discrete subgroup of infinite covolume. Then, the locally symmetric space $\Lambda\backslash G/K$ admits injected balls of any radius. This can be considered as a geometric interpretation of the celebrated Margulis normal subgroup theorem. However, it applies to general discrete subgroups not necessarily associated to lattices. Yet, the result is new even for subgroups of infinite index of lattices. We establish similar results for higher rank semisimple groups with Kazhdan's property (T). We prove a stiffness result for discrete stationary random subgroups in higher rank semisimple groups and a stationary variant of the Stück-Zimmer theorem for higher rank semisimple groups with property (T). We also show that a stationary limit of a measure supported on discrete subgroups is almost surely discrete.
